we're tipping our hats double-time to you. temperatures are going to be just about perfect this afternoon. it's a cold start to the day. 40s, a couple of 30s in the north bay this morning but we're going to hit the 70s. beautiful rebound headed our way and gorgeous conditions as we head into this weekend a. lot of people are celebrating. we'll go deeper into that forecast. >> thanks so much. new this morning investigators are trying to identify a body found inside the highway 87 overpass early this morning. just before 1:00 someone alerted firefighte firefighters. the person was in a confined space in the overpass, it's normally used by inspectors to check for structural safety after earthquakes. the investigators think the person may have been homeless. they tell nbc bay area the body may have been there for weeks.

we're also following breaking news on the peninsula. crews on the scene of a crash where a car plunged hundreds of feet off a cliff. damian trujillo is live in san mateo county off highway 92 with a rescue that just wrapped up. >> did it, laura, good morning. it was a dramatic rescue. we're on highway 35 and 92 and only because we lit up the background can you see. but it's really dark. they had to bring in a helicopter with special lights and do this rescue. let's show you the images. they are spectacular images. four people were in this car who went off the embankment here off highway 92 and down between 300 and 500 feet below. one person in the vehicle was able to climb up and get on the roadway and call for help. that's when rescue crews

arrived. the crews were able to lift them up to safety and then take them to sf general. it took about four hours to get this operation going and done with. but they were able to get those four victims out of there and back into safety. highway 92 remained closed so a big inconvenience for the folks up in the mountains but thanks to the rescue crews those people are now safely at the hospital. the car will remain down the embankment the chp tells me until they get some sun and some sort of mechanism to pull that car out. that's a long way down. live in san mateo county, damian trujillo, "today in the bay." >> in the meantime we have more breaking news this time in the south bay. police looking for two people who shot a man and a woman earlier this morning. bob is live on the scene outside the downtown area. what's the latest going on

there? >> reporter: good morning to you. the crime scene is about an hour old. one witness told us she heard several gun shots, she counted five of them. police tell us there was a young couple, a man and woman on the porch of that home. two other people came up, one on foot, one in a car and shot at them. the man was hit several times. the woman was hit i believe in the foot, both taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. police say that this was random, that the people who shot at them did not know the couple that was sitting on the porch and the suspects have not been found. loan took off on foot, the other drove off in a car so they are still looking. you can see live at the scene, police what they are doing now, they are looks like they have

been interviewing people who live next door trying to get more information as far as what led up to this shooting. again t two people a young man and woman in their 20s, they are in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. >> thanks for the latest there, bob. it's 5:05. don't be surprised if you see more flashing lights than usual. police and chp will have extra patrols this weekend looking for people breaking the law. police 18 palo alto were concerned about what they call black wednesday. the day before thanksgiving when everyone is home for the holidays is one of the busiest times of the year for bars, that means it's a busy time for police. the extra enforcement will be in effect all weekend long. play it safe out there. dozens camping out for holiday door buster deals. this is the latest video from the best buy off of the expressway in san jose b. 20

people waiting for the doors to open. not on back friday but at 6:00 tonight. the shoppers, some coming as far as the peninsula say the great savings make it worth it. >> the ipad's going to be $100 off and certain things are discounted to like 200, $300 off. it's really worth it when you add it up. >> it's not just best buy. walmart, followed by macy's and target. the first retail tear open today, it's kmart. it opens at 6:00 this morning. this year the store is giving a new way to pay. it's offering a rent to own finance program f. you choose the plan wul make your first lease payment followed by monthly or bi-weekly payments. you can buy out the contract or

look at the difference. head up the golden gate bridge. cold between san francisco and the north bay. in the upper 30s. toward a nice afternoon we'll climb into the upper 60s to low 70s a. fair amount of cloud cover today. a storm system is lurking offshore. it might bring a stray shower or two so keep that in mind. plus we'll take a look at vicious wind headed toward new york city that could ground some. we'll look at the balloon forecast. back to you, laura. >> we'll need it. is spider man going to be up there? this morning pizza hut changing its tune, one of the many bay area restaurants open today in hopes of boosting holiday sales. but one manager of an indiana pizza hut he was fired for refusing to open. his employees deserve the

holiday off. after the story gained national attention pizza hut issued a statement saying we fully respect an employee's right not to work on a hol ta. as a result we strongly recommend that the local franchisee reinstate the store manager and they have agreed. we look forward to them welcoming tony back to the team. >> it's 5:09. still ahead on "today in the bay," sharing the love this thanksgiving. a couple expecting more than 1,000 for thanksgiving dinner.

probably a lot of people have the day off. that's the bay bridge toll plaza approach. metering lights i think it's safe to say they are not on. 5:12 now. when it comes to the thanksgiving feast most cooks need a few dozen people but a livermore couple they are getting ready to feed hundreds. starting at noon lorraine moore will dish up to anybody who stops by the boswell center for the arts. this morning's bay area proud. >> reporter: compared to what it looks like today, the livermore of the 1970s was about as small town as the bay area got. unless, that is, you just moved here from white thorn, california, county of humboldt, population 250. >> oh, lord have mercy. >> reporter: livermore was the big city. >> yes.

to me. >> reporter:-however, is the story of how over three decades she and her husband randy have been proving that size doesn't matter. except when it's the size of someone's heart. >> no matter how big a town gets or how small you may feel, there's somebody out there that will take care of you and help you and love you. >> reporter: that's what they have been doing for 30 years. that's how long they have been coordinating the livermore community thanksgiving dinner. ever since a friend of theirs came up with the idea of doing something nice for those less fortunate on thanksgiving. >> i ghot idea and he says i'm in, and called me, i said i'm in. >> reporter: back then she had no idea what she was getting

herself into. that first year they served about 200 people. >> it was the host heart warming thing. >> enough so the mores decided to to it again and again. the dinner each year getting bigger and bigger and bigger. this year they will pull together meals for 1,500 people who might not otherwise get a turkey dinner. the only way they can is with the help of a few key regular volunteers. an eclectic group they picked up over the years. >> this dedicated months to helping. if you put all the time together they spent it probably would equal a year of work of volunteering. >> so if you find yourself passing by the art center on eighth street in livermore and wonder what the crowd is there

for you now know. it's just a big bay area city showing its softer, smaller size. garvin thomas, "today in the bay." >> and showing a lot of love. that's great. we want to check in with meteorologist christina loren. she's got a look at our forecast. >> after the east coast got hammered yesterday by a really potent storm system we have an area of low pressure that could bring us an isolated shower or two. a mix of sun and clouds and temperatures mostly in the upper 60s to low 70s. we've got a cooler week ahead next week as we head into december. it's going to feel like it. san francisco looking good, about 42 degrees, in some of the south bay cities, san francisco closer to 50 action you're in the upper 30s to start day in the east bay. right now it's positioned offshore. you can see the core of this

area out in the pacific. as we head throughout day this is going to kick up bands of moisture. i stop the clock, we're going to get snowfall right around lake tahoe later on today. let me set this in motion. it sits offshore and spins. we have a chance of a stray shower or two. that's the setup. temperatures are comfortable, count on the potential for maybe isolated drizzle. or a stray shower. mostly along the peninsula. 67 degrees. hard to beat a temperature like that. isn't that nice. look at the rest of these numb pers. richmond district, 69 degrees in the city, 67 for walnut creek. 71 degrees, pleasanton live.

out there yesterday. we wish you a safe thanksgiving this morning. happening today organizers expect a record number of people to show up for an annual thanksgiving tradition, the turkey trot kicks off in two hours. runners will swarm downtown san jose to run for the charity event. it benefits a variety of charities, last year people donated $1.2 million and 26,000 pounds of food. organizers expect 28,000 people to participate this year. and boy, it has grown. 1900 people took part in the first turkey trot nine years ago. >> it's a good morning to get out there. meteorologist christina loren right after the show you're going to head over to the turkey trot, i understand. >> i'm going to be trotting throughout the minute this show ends, then trotting home to eat. you work it off before you get to enjoy it this year. a little bit about the macy's thanksgiving day parade because this is something that's

happening right after our broadcast. and people look forward to it every single year while you're getting that turkey ready, watching the macy's thanksgiving day parade. here is the thing. this year because of the storm system that came through yesterday, as it exits the northeast it's going to kick up some really fierce wind. we're talking about the potential for gusts to 40 miles per hour, but the balloons may be lowered or some of the bigger ones might not fly at all. so that's what we're watching for. it is gusting throughout this morning. it's also going to be cold out there as you watch from your warm heated living room. 32 in new york city with the wind chill making it feel like the mid-20s. so that's what we're watching for later on this morning. always, though, always no matter what happens with the wind it's going to be quite a show. thanksgiving forecast, for san jose looking good. temperatures comfortable, 63 at noon. 4:00, 66 degrees and overall looking at the entire nation's weather i have to say we are

going to be the envy of the nation for today with showers moving into southern california. we'll be the best. we've got the best of the best in the bay area. back to you, laura. >> i got to say you're going to be the best dressed runner. in those heels that's impressive. organizers expect more than 3.5 million people to line the macy's parade rouxt among them some peta activists planning to protest a sea world float because they say sea world mistreats orkas. a spokeswoman says it collected 80,000 signatures on line to have the float removed after it protested outside the new jersey location where the floats were built and stored earlier this week. speaking of the macy's day parade, hundreds of thousand us lining the manhattan route to take part in the holiday tradition. jay gray is live at the starting point for the macy's thanksgiving day parade. how is it going out there, jay? >> reporter: good morning,

50 degrees east bay, 51 in san francisco, so it's not too cold there. we've gained a couple degrees out in the north bay. at 41 up from 38 about 15 minutes ago. temperatures are going to be in the 70s in the east bay later on. 64 for san francisco and 71 degrees out in the north bay. a mix of sun and clouds, mostly cloudy along the peninsula. we might see maybe, just maybe a stray shower. not looking likely for that. we'll have your full forecast. right now back to you. >> 5:31. breaking news in the south bay to tell you about. police are on the scene of what appears to be a random shooting near downtown. bob redell is live on the scene. bob, police tell you the gunman took off? >> reporter: yes, two of them or at least one and accomplice. police tell us that these two people shot a young man and woman in their 20s. they were sitting on the front porch of that house where police are with their flashlights.

this is here on state and sutter south of 280 outside of downtown san jose. it was 4:00 this morning, very early in the morning, very dark, when two people approached. one walked, the other drove and at least one started firing a condition. a witness told us she heard five shots. some of the bullets struck the man, one ricocheted and hit the woman in the foot. she is going to be okay and remarkably so is the man in spite of being shot multiple times. >> as far as i know based on what i'm told this appears to be a random act. >> random. >> yes. i don't believe the victims and the suspects knew each other. >> robbery? >> there was no dialogue between the suspects and the victim. >> reporter: both suspects fled. police have not released a description of either person. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the latest there,

bob. more to tell you about, this time on the peninsula. the chp working to remove a car that fell off after cliff in san mateo county. four people were in the car when it went off the road, one managed to walk up and call for help. damian trujillo is live at the scene with new video of that rescue. good morning. >> it was a dramatic rescue off highway 92 near skyline boulevard. i got off the phone, they tell me that things wrapped up about an hour ago on 92 but not before this dramatic rescue got caught by cameras a. car slid off the road and fell roughly 500 feet below. crews arrived with a helicopter and air lifted three passengers up to safety one by one. one of the people in the car as you mentioned was apparently able to climb up to the mountainside and call for help. the victims suffered broken bones but nothing major. they were transported to sf

general and are expected to be okay. they are investigating the cause, why did the car go down the cliff? when the rescue went on 92 remained closed for four hours. truckers waiting to deliver goods to the coast and on the other side the same thing as well. the car will remain down there about 500 feet below the cliff until they are able to get some sort of mechanism to pull the car up to the roadway. >> what a rescue there. thank you so much, damian. police say they will be out in force looking for drunk drivers. it started last night with what some departments call black wednesday. it's called that because the day before thanksgiving is traditionally the busiest time of the year for local bars. it's a busy time for police because that's when a lot of college students come home for the holidays to brink with

friends. >> pretty much we use it like an old high school reunion. >> when i did it i was in grad school so i didn't do the whole undergrad experience kind of thing. i didn't realize it had a name. >> special patrols and enforcements will be visible throughout the holiday weekend. home for thanksgiving, the east bay teen who authorities say is a victim after hate crime. sasha fleishman is home with family. he was released yesterday. the 18-year-old suffered second and third degree burns when another teen set sasha's skirt on fire earlier this month on board an ac transit bus. sasha's mother is hopeful something good will come out of the crime. >> this kind of intolerance, people will realize you can wear unusual clothe and it doesn't mean you have a right to attack

them. >> prosecutors have charged 16-year-old richard thomas as an aresult in the crime. >> a baby born in the front seat of a minivan may be going home. 2 day old -- his mother and grandmother on the way to the medical center but his mom knew she wasn't going to make it. they pulled into a bus yard where quinton's mom gave birth. >> i was pretty calm. i knew he was coming. i knew i had to take care and one good push and he was out and wide awake and happy. >> pretty on top of it. a dispatcher helped grab a take care of mom and baby. quinton healthy can't wait to get home. what a thankful celebration they will have. i want to check in with meteorologist christina loren. we're thankful you got up early with us. >> thank you, you too. and hey, yes, you have to work

and cook today, we tip our hats to you. that's laura garcia-cannon's case so yeah, what a woman. 47 degrees in the south bay. sense sense, 48 degrees. right now the east bay is at 50 so. not too cold in the north bay. you drop back to 39 degrees. as we head throughout day still dark out there. when the sun does make an appearance you'll notice plenty of high and mid level clouds. that will be the case. it's a fog-free start to your thanksgiving thursday. and temperatures are comfortable. you can see all of the bay bridge which is a really nice welcome treat for this morning. something else you'll probably enjoy are temperatures for today. going to end up at 68 degrees, menlo park 68, mission district, san francisco right around 69 degrees so unseasonably warm for your thanksgiving there. sausalito, 69. 66 fremont and pleasanton, 71 degrees. we've got cooler weather headed our way. i'm going to detail that. if you want a speak at the

man wants that to happen and why he geared his life around it. it's a unique story which is certainly making the bay area proud. >> reporter: in any given 24-hour period, an average of 120,000 passengers pass through san francisco international airport. and on this night, you would be safe in saying that not a single one of them did it for less money than scott. scott didn't just fly for free from portland to sfo. scott hasn't paid for a single airline ticket this decade. >> sort of became my life. >> reporter: he is happy to tell anyone who will listen exactly how he did it. >> he can pack a suit case in five minutes. >> reporter: scott something of a travel expert. telling people how to maximize and stay for nothing. his biggest flash came when he

spent one entire year traveling the globe not spending a cent on a flight or a place to stay. it was a remarkable feat, made even more so when scott tells you it didn't just save him money. >> we have to sort of -- >> reporter: something else. >> it saved my life from my own. >> that part of scott's story begins here. the streets of the tender loin district close to 20 years ago. a troubled kid growing up in dayton, ohio scott made a series of bad, sometimes criminal decisions that ultimately led to san francisco, homelessness, and drug addiction, all at the age of 16. >> sleeping on street corners in the tenderloin. many cold nights there was no money. there was no plan. the only plan was drugs. >> scott says getting arrested on a warrant and finding out in jail he had hiv convinced him to

make a change. flying happened to be the ticket for him. something about being in the clouds, scott says, cleared his mind. >> therapy on a plane i call it. setting my life free from the airplane seat >> it's not only his passion, it's now his ticket to share his story. scott travels the country networking with politicians and using his flame to deliver his message. he turned his life around before it was too late. so can others. garvin thomas, "today in the bay." >> it is 5:43. the floats they are going to fly. we learned that despite winds the floats t big balloons, they will officially lift off the ground. it's great news. the forecasters worried the strong storm pummelling the east coast could bring sustained winds up to 20 miles per hour.

look at that, spiedy, up in the air. no 40-mile-per-hour gust will hold him down. rules say if the sustained winds exceed 23 miles per hour and gusts 34, they have to ground all of the big balloons. for more on the storm and the wind, a really good day there. >> really great news to hear. it's like a baseball game when you find throughout's not going to be a rain delay or it will get canceled. it will happen. you know what, a couple things to watch for. you're going to be watching thousands of people lining the streets of new york city, just bundled up because there will be a severe windchill factor you'll be able to see their breath, freezing cold conditions. 32 degrees. with that wind throughout it's going to feel like the mid 20s so one of those days where if you're going to watch the parade from the comfort of your indoor heater it should be nice. they are going to see cold

college. this is from last year's game which lincoln high school won. in fact, it's beaten san jose high in the holiday rivalry now for the past 15 years. the big bone game is a battle for a trophy made from a steer bone that was salvaged from a butcher shop in 1945. i don't know if it had been shellacked or what. a short week for the raiders, they are getting ready for a showdown with the cowboys. the raiders get a key piece of their offense back, darren mcfadden will play after missing three games with that hamstring injury. it's a quick turn around from sunday's game. today's game kicks off at 1:30 for your viewing pleasure. the raiders/cowboys game one of three. early in the morning packers head to detroit for game one, that is at 9:30, then tonight it's a defending super bowl champs the ravens in a showdown

with the pittsburgh steelers. kickoff for that is at 5:30. you can see that here on nbc bay area. >> the bay area air quality management district urging people not to burn wood later today. probably won't need to but earlier this week the district issued winter spare the air alerts banning wood burning in the area. today is not a spare the air day so burning is not illegal, just not recommended. cold temperatures, low winds causing a backup of wood smoke in the area. especially we've got all of the runners for the bay area turkey trot. you're heading out there. >> yeah. i'm goes to host a 5-k but i'm not going to run in it. i'm not one of those runners. a good looking day shaping up. i'm one of those eaters and you likely are as well. big turkey dinner and temperatures are comfortable. maybe you're barbecuing that
