regional medical center and then stole a van leading police on a short chase the wrong way on 680. he ended up near mabry road and kirkglenn drive where police say the suspect rammed one of the officer patrol cars. one officer fired. the van crashed into a tree. the suspect died at the scene. neighbors in the area said something had to be done to stop the chaos. >> it was a police action, it was something that needed to be done. i'm glad they were on top of it and took care of it. >> the officer is on leave pending an investigation. in san jose the suspects in two separate shootings are still on the run. around 2:00 yesterday morning a man was shot in east san jose. two hours later another shooting a few miles away. the two victims in that shooting were on their porch when two

people approached and opened fire. both shootings appear random but all three victims are expected to survive. the teenager who was set on fire aboard an ac transit bus is speaking publicly about the horrifying moments. sasha fleischman spent thanksgiving home after weeks in the hospital. jodi hernandez shares the story. >> feels really great to be home and i'm really glad that i could be home for thanksgiving. >> reporter: despite enduring a terrifying ordeal sasha fleischman couldn't be more grateful. >> pretty much all my burned areas have skin grafts. >> reporter: the high school senior suffered severe burns to the legs. when another teen set sasha's skirt on fire aboard an ac transit bus. >> i looked down and my skirt is

on fire. i freak out because i'm on fire. >> for the first time, sasha is talking publicly about the ordeal. describing the moments of panic on scene and feeling the flames. >> my first instinct is kind of dumb, start waving around trying to put it out, so that fans the flames and makes it bigger. >> what he did next, something learned in kindergarten, may have saved the teen. >> i drop on the floor and just start rolling around. >> reporter: his injuries required three surgeries and three weeks in the burn unit. he doesn't seem bitter. >> i don't want to be too harsh because people will do dumb things, you know. especially when they are teenagers. >> reporter: sasha believes the 16-year-old suspect, richard thomas, shouldn't be prosecuted as an adult.

though the teen's not sure what thomas' intent was. >> it was a dumb thing he did. i think he should be able to realize that's not a fun prank. >> reporter: the case has drawn worldwide attention, and sasha who doesn't identify as male or female, hopes it will lead to a better understanding of gender identity issues. as for the skirt, don't expect any changes. >> it's a big b.a.r.t. of who i am. i don't like pants. >> it's 4:35. happening now black friday shopping got off to an early start. for some it was about great thursday. many opened doors earlier than usual. shoppers stormed into macy's looking for hot deals. instead of midnight macy's broke a 155-year old tradition,

opening on thanksgiving. doors opened at 8:00. other stores opened earlier, shoppers say the savings are well worth skipping thanksgiving dinner. >> you're not missing any big dinner for this? >> i'm missing everything. i'm not because of this deal. >> business is business. you know. and for some people opening up early is probably better and for some it's not. if you can make it work. if not there are other sales later. >> according to the national retail federation survey, estimated 140 million will shop this weekend, that's down from 147 million from last year. look at the frenzy. it was madness in this walmart in north carolina when the doors opened last night. video was taken right after the hdtv's and electronics went on

sale. you see shoppers trying to get their hands on the bargains. i wonder if they know what they are buying. the shopping continues. jay gray is at the mall of america in minnesota with what some say the middle of shopping universe. >> reporter: the dash for deals. the push for presents. the rush for a little retail therapy. actually began just after all of the turkey was gone. >> i live for this day and i take this day off work every year. my belly is full and i'm ready to shop. >> reporter: the lines stretched all searching for the same thing. saving. >> trying to save money. this is the holidays and we're trying to get as much as we can for the kids. >> reporter: starting early and analysts say stretching even past the weekend. >>i actually think black friday is gaining relevance because it's becoming more of a season

than one day in particular. >> reporter: not everyone is sold on the idea of shopping thanksgiving day. >> they should all be closed on thanksgiving. it's thanksgiving. >> reporter: if there is a debate what to do on thursday, football and beer and pretzels and food, that's what it's about. friday's focus is clear. finding that perfect gift at a great price. >> reporter: black friday this year shoppers are expected to spend on average nearly $650 over the weekend, up 11% from black friday last year. jay gray, nbc news, at the mall of america. >> thanks, jay. not everyone was just shopping. across the bay thousands spent their thanksgiving helping those in need. >> let's eq.everybody! >> that's a good call for many. that's bob mann.

he assembled a small armiy to make turkey sandwiches and handed them out in san jose. he also served more than 1,000 slices of pie as well as donuts and coffee. he got the idea after people in the park flocked to him to get his leftovers last year. he says the meal was such a hit he plans to come back on christmas day. so will we. >> at glad memorial church it was a tradition with a musical twist. they broke into song helping serve lunch at the church. ♪ amazing grace how sweet >> that's nice. they do serve it every year, the church served several thousand people yesterday. many who depend on them say they wouldn't survive without the services. >> i'm in the shelter, you know. and without this i wouldn't -- i

positive. december will be too. over the past 10 years, if november is positive the dow and s&p are up in december, 80% of the time. it is just a half day for the markets today, on wednesday the dow closed up 24 points to 16,097, the nasdaq added 27, to close at 4045. as you mentioned groups of walmart workers and supporters are planning protests at 1500 stores nationwide today. they hope to draw attention to what they believe are wages that are too low. protesters believe that walmart and its $17 billion in profits made last year should allow the retailer to boost and pay what workers call livable levels of wages. they say not all of the protesters are walmart workers but because some employees fear retaliation if they criticize the company. amazon is not waiting until cyber monday. the on line retailer will open a special cyber monday store on

that's making us bay area proud. >> reporter: every wednesday at noon, the multipurpose room at san rafael sun valley elementary take on a singular purpose. saving the world. something members of the school's environmental club the green team say they know they can do because they are already doing it. the proof they will tell you, is in the palm of their hand. >> i never have been involved in anything quite like this. >> reporter: wilson is an author and was the father of two sun valley kids when he took over the green team last spring. it was a discussion about plastic pollution that got the kids thinking. >> the topic of crayola plastic markers came up and everybody could relate to that. >> reporter: and how the markers were not recyclable. a big deal seeing as crayola makes a half a billion of them a year. so the green team decided to ask

crayola to start a take-back program. >> called them and we asked if there was anyone we could talk to. we talked to the product safety department and they said no, there is no one you can talk to about that. sorry. >> reporter: but no is a word kids don't like to hearment be it from teachers, parents, or major corporations. so, on change.org the kids started a petition and not only did more than 90,000 people sign it, but other schools around the country joined in the crusade adding their voice. >> recycle crayola. >> reporter: the movement grew until one day this spring crayola changed their no into a yes. >> memories of kids jumping up and down. >> we were really happy because we accomplished something. >> reporter: now some 600 schools are taking part in
