hit a pedestrian prompting a sigalert on interstate 80. it happened on eastbound 80 at the seventh street on ramp. reports indicated the pedestrian is unconscious, unresponsive but now we have just learned that the person has died. southbound 101 to eastbound 80 is closed. the chp is urging drivers in that area to just avoid it. we're sending our chop tear the scene. we'll bring you an update as soon as we get it. >> at 6:01, san jose police learning more about the man one officer shot and killed after a wild crime spree on thanksgiving day. damian trujillo is live at the regional medical center with an update on the conditions of several people stabbed by the suspect. >> reporter: good morning, laura, yeah, that suspect was shot dead by the san jose police officer yesterday morning. that last report the three stabbing victims are still here at the regional medical center in serious condition but they are expected to survive.

here's what happened yesterday. it unravelled around the corner. police say the suspect stole a minivan after the stabbing. he led police on a chase that included driving the wrong way for a short distance on highway 680. police say the suspect returned to the neighborhood and rammed a patrol car. that's when an officer opened fire, killing the suspect. the minivan rolled and crashed into a neighbor's tree. police are trying to find out the motive for this stabbing. but it is believed the suspect knew the stabbing victims. the whole thing happened around the corner from regional and witnesses couldn't believe what they were seeing on the streets of san jose. >> my goodness what's wrong with this guy because he almost hit us. i don't think he cares or something like we thought he was drunk at first. but when we saw two cars were chasing like a few seconds followed a few seconds after we knew my gosh, this man is

running away from somebody. >> reporter: the officer is a 10-year veteran, he is on routine administrative leave while the d.a. and the homicide units investigate this officer-involved shooting. the name of the officer has not been released. a violent thanksgiving day on the streets of san jose. live in regional medical center, damian trujillo, "today in the bay." >> thank you, damian. also in san jose the suspect involved in two shootings still on the run this morning. around 2:00 yesterday morning a man was shot in east san jose. two hours later another shooting a few miles away on state street. police say the two victims in that shooting were sitting on the porch when two people approached the house and opened fire. police say both shootings appear random but all three victims are expected to survive. >> also new inmorning all lanes of westbound interstate 80 open after a deadly crash. it happened at 12:30 this

morning. all westbound lanes were shut down for hours during the investigation. the victim's identity has not been released and the cause of the crash is under investigation. >> fremont police asking for help this morning identifying a burglar caught on camera. a surveillance camera in the homeowner's bedroom snapped these photos of the man as he made his way through the home on addison court tuesday afternoon. the suspect was talking on a smart phone with what appears to be a red case. to get in police say he broke the glass in a back patio sliding door. >> happening now, door buster deals, all night shopping marathons. some violence is reported in many cities. overnight in chicago, police shot and injured a driver believed to be involved in a shoplifting scheme at a kohls. they had to shoot the driver after the car dragged a police officer through a department

store parking lot. the driver and the officer are expected to survive. two other suspects are in custody. >> meantime, in alabama it was a rush to be the first through the doors here. you can see, some shoppers ducked under the metal gate at this department store just to get -- be the first to get hands on some boots. people get crazy out there. so far, though, people much calmer here in the bay area. thousands of deal seekers will storm the stores hoping to make a dent in their christmas shopping list. bob redell is there with them. live at the livermore premium outlets. how is it going? >> reporter: good morning. a little lull out here. keep in mind that these mall stores have been open the past 12 hours opening at 6:00 last night. management tells us they saw a surge between midnight and 2:00 this morning. then the crowd died down. that's not to say there aren't a lot of people here, just not as

many as there were. all of them trying to get in on the deals. a lot of stores offer 50% off the regular merchandise, even 50% off clearance with people here dropping hundreds on clothes and gifts for christmas. >> $49. bam. i paid what. >> what's wrong with this? >> you know what, this is my winter purse. this purse goes with my boots. >> you are killing me. >> i didn't save anything. >> what does that mean. you got to have saved something. >> trust me. my mom, my girlfriend, my friends, i'm paying for this. didn't save anything. >> how much you spend? >> over a thousand. >> what would it cost you on a non-sale day? >> more like maybe $2,000. >> you saved 1,000.

>> he does have a point when you are spending for everyone, you're not really saving anything. i can relate. national retail federation expects americans to spend $738 this holiday season. that's about 2% less than last year. the first time we've seen a drop in holiday spending in four years. but what you're seeing nation wide might not be true for the bay area a. santa clara professor who specializes in retail management he says he believes consumers will spend more than the rest of the country. calling it a tale of two christmases, namely because many people here benefitted from the strong recovery and housing, fewer people under water in homes, they have more equity, feel richer and therefore they end up spending more. the area has benefitted from the recent ipos and the surge in tech stock. the management here they don't have the hard numbers yet but do believe there is more traffic this year than last year. even though we're not seeing the

off. if you are heading out to save or shop you're a good consumer. we tip our hat to you. 47 degrees in san francisco. clear conditions here. you can see both towers in the bay bridge, beautiful start to the day, clear, we've got high mid level clouds lingering but they are going to clear out. a really nice comfortable finish headed our way. some of the best temperatures you can expect on this day after thanksgiving. really can't ask for much better than 67 degrees in los altos, menlo park, mid market area, san francisco in the mid to upper 60s and the north bay. in the tri-valley, 71 degrees in pleasanton. a lot of people aside from shopping will try to travel throughout the afternoon so keep that in mind. a lot of people will be traveling by vehicle because they don't want to fight the crowds on sunday so. if you are headed into southern california i want to point this out it's clear here in the bay area. but they are getting quite a bit of rainfall here and this will continue to be the case throughout the morning hours so

travel cautiously. by late tonight the whole thing clears out. back to you. >> speaking of traveling, a local company now the first ride sharing business to start operating legally at sfo. san francisco based relay ride lets bay area travelers park for free at hotels near sfo while their cars are rented out to visitors during their trips. the company has leased parking spaces at two hotel airports the westin san francisco airport and the loft san francisco airport. all cars are washed before they are returned and all renters have to go through background checks. sfo says they picked relay rides over other companies because they were willing to comply with state and local rules. plus, relay rides agreed to pay sfo 10% of the profit from business it generates at the airport. >> 6:10. still ahead on "today in the bay." the olympic torch light as bob

san jose police reviewing policy and procedures from yesterday's deadly crime spree in the south bay. they want to review events that led to the shooting death of a man suspected of stabbing three people. carjacking a van and ramming an officer's patrol car. >> a dangerous start to black friday outside chicago. police shot and hurt a driver believed involved in a shoplifting scheme at kohls. officers say they had to shoot the driver after a car dragged a police officer through a parking lot. >> san francisco relay ride has become the first ride sharing business to start operating legally at sfo. the airport picked the company over other car sharing companies because it said it was willing to comply with state and local rules. relay rides pay sfo 10% of its airport profits. >> nasa is having trouble getting one of its rockets off the ground. >> 3, 2, 1, zero. aborted. >> a last-minute glitch forced

nasa to abort the liftoff of the spacex rocket. this is the second time this week the launch has been scrubbed. it's carrying a communications satellite which is designed to improve cable and broadband services across asia. a former russian olympic bob sledder accidentally set his sleeve on fire. the flames were apparently caused by drops of liquid gas on his jacket. this is the latest 18 series of mishaps. the times reports the flame has gone out 44 times during its trek. >> giant publicity stunt in russia is backfiring for a french fashion house. check out the giant trunk that louis vuitton set up in red square. it's 98 feet long, 30 feet high. the company says the trunk was constructed to house an exhibit that benefits a russian

children's charity. but many russians are outraged with critics saying it's too close to lenon's tomb and the kremlin. local media reports the president's administration did not have advance notice of the project. local authorities have asked the trunk be dismantled. louis vuitton says they have not gotten official notice to tear it down. >> this year black friday is more of a gray area with many stores opening a day ahead. who better to give us the scoop than jay gray at the mall of america in bloomington, minnesota. i have never been there but that's supposed to be huge, jay. >> reporter: it's a city, laura. i can't tell you how big this place is. it's roller coaster and more stores than you can imagine. we're between waves now. the late group that came in, they have gotten everything, maybe coming back. now the morning shoppers, they will fill in this corridor at the mall. you see it's starting to fill

>> reporter: if there is debate what to do on thursday. >> football, beer and pretzels and food. >> reporter: friday's focus is clear. finding that perfect gift at a great price. >> reporter: black friday also a bargain, a real deal for retailers. this yearable lipss say shoppers will spend on average almost $650 this weekend. that's up 11% from last year's black friday weekend. there was concern because this year in between thanksgiving and christmas retailers lose a week but it looks like people are out and spending money which is great news for the retailers and the economy. i'm sure when you're done you're going to spend money too. >> maybe so. you're turning into our holiday reporter as well at the parade in new york yesterday and now shopping. can't wait to see what monday holds. >> reporter: i can't either.

>> thanks a lot, jay. seems like most retailers try to get an early start by opening store as day early but san jose based electronics chain fry's doing things the old-fashioned way. fry's was closed thanksgiving day but offered special deals on line allowing people to reserve tvs and other electronics for pickup today. randy fry, the president of the company, says that means no standing in long lines or fighting the guy next to you for the last tablet. >> they don't have to worry about stampedes or is that actually going to be there. people will be able to sit back, relax and pick it up on black friday. >> at your leisure. all fry's locations in the bay area open for business at 6:00 this morning. i want to check in with meteorologist christina loren. are you going to hit the malls? >> i'm going to hit the online malls and hit them hard. i never met a sale i didn't

like. i never met a beautiful sun rise in the bay area i didn't like. even when it's foggy. we still get a beautiful sun rise. this morning none to tell you about. it's clear out there. it's a little hazy but we are looking good. temperatures right now mostly in the 40s, face the cameras to the east. here is the south bay, 44 in san jose. to kick off black friday. comfortable conditions. sun rise will take place in another half hour. so we're getting closer to the sunrise. temps are going to tumble. we're going to be at about 69 degrees, this is your trend for redwood city, for most of the bay area. 69 today. 67 on saturday. we're going to bump up a touch on sunday. up to about 70. then at 59 on monday so. temperatures are going to crash as this area of low pressure comes in. it's going to upin quickly. we're talking about the potential for frost and freezing conditions especially in the north bay. i wanted to show you your

we have breaking news right now in san francisco as we bring you live pictures this morning of the back of -- this is a garbage truck that hit and killed a pedestrian. prompting a sigalert on interstate 80. a look at the backup there. this is on eastbound interstate 80 at the seventh street off ramp, southbound 101 to eastbound 80 is actually closed. the chp is urging drivers to avoid the area. the investigation is continuing this morning on the death of that pedestrian hit by a truck. look at the backup already. it's 6:24. at least 85 people now injured in a very high speed ferry crash near hong kong. the ferry was heading for makal

when it hit something in the water. authorities aren't sure what that object was. three of the injured are now in serious condition. at least three considered in stable condition. the ferry was carrying 105 passengers and 10 crew members at the time of the crash. >> a 9-story garment factory in bangladesh now destroyed after a massive fire. so far no deaths have been reported at the factory but investigators say they believe the flames were intentionally set. 200 firefighters worked to bring the fire under control a. government official says many of the crews couldn't reach the scene immediately because angry factory workers were blocking them. protesters in thailand stay put after storming the grounds. 1200 broke through the gate this morning and forced their way inside.

the crowd is calling on the military to join their anti-government campaign and oust the prime minister. security forces have not used force to make them clear out. thailand's prime minister live in dubai to avoid serving a jail term for corruption. the search is on for a handyman who lived at a home where three people were found dead 18 fire. investigators say the fire which killed two women and a man was intentionally set. southern california authorities say the man is 59-year-old harry who rent add room at the home. it's possible that he is among the dead. the bodies are now at the coroner's department awaiting identification. >> in ohio a train derailment and chemical spill is now a three-day ordeal for some in the small town. all but three dozen homes are off limits in willard, ohio until later tonight. most of the 425 families forced

avoid that area. we'll keep you posted on changes as the investigation continues. a pedestrian hit by a truck. >> this morning investigators trying to figure out a motive behind a violent crime spree in san jose. a suspect was ultimately shot to death by police. it started when the man stabbed three people. he stole a van on jackson avenue leading police on a chase the wrong way on 680. he ended up near kirk glenn drive where police say the suspect rammed one of the patrol cars. at some point one officer fired, hitting the suspect at least once. the van crashed into a tree. the suspect died at the scene. the officer is on administrative leave. damian trujillo is learning more about the victims at regional medical center. about the police review process that is also now under way. he's going to have a live report for us coming up at 6:45.

this morning the teenager set on fire aboard an ac transit bus is speaking about the moments. sasha fleischman spent thanksgiving at home with his family after several weeks in the hospital. jodi hernandez shares his story. >> it feels really great to be home and i'm really glad that i could be home for thanksgiving. >> reporter: despite enduring a terrifying ordeal, sasha fleischman couldn't be more grateful this thanksgiving. >> pretty much all of my burned areas, i have a skin graft. >> reporter: the high school senior suffered severe burns to the legs when another teen set sasha's skirt on fire aboard an ac transit bus three weeks ago. >> i looked down and my skirt is on fire. i freak out because i'm on fire. >> reporter: for the first time sasha is talking publicly about

the ordeal, describing the moments of panic on seeing and feeling the flames. >> my first instinct was kind of dumb. start waving around trying to put it out. that fans the flames and makes it bigger. >> reporter: what he did next, something earned in kindergarten may have saved the teen. >> i drop on the floor and just start rolling around. >> his injuries required three surgeries and three weeks in the burn unit. sasha doesn't seem bitter. >> i don't want to be too harsh because people do dumb things. especially when they are teenagers. >> reporter: sasha believes the 16-year-old suspect, richard thomas, shouldn't be prosecuted as an adult. though the teen's not sure what thomas' intent really was. >> dumb things. i think you should be able to

eastbound toward tahoe don't expect too much snow on the ground. making sure there is enough powder on the slopes for holiday fears. the storm that was supposed to hit northern california appears to be bypassing the region. the next system isn't expected until the middle of the week. a nonprofit in the south bay has 35 days to raise money for its snow park in san jose. check out their page set up for the group snow school incorporated. the goal is $1 million. they want to build the park at an abandoned landfill. the facility would use synthetic snow and the size of the park will depend on how much money they can raise. wonder how cold they got to keep it. it's been pretty nice. >> it really is. they are opening on some of the sledding hills as well out in tahoe but yeah, we have really

off ramp. investigators were at the scene taking note of everything going on there. it was one we'll continue to follow throughout the day. it's 6:41. >> a gas pipe line lit up the sky in west central missouri overnight, surprising black friday shoppers nearby. we're told people heard a loud bang and rumbling for miles around. emergency crews are on the scene and so far no reports of any injuries. it appears a rupture happened on this same pipeline just about the same spot in 2008. no one was injured in that incident either. ohio's highway patrol says a chase turned deadly when a car going up to 150 miles an hour slammed into a van and burst into flames. the state patrol was chasing a triver when he lost control and crashed into a van thanksgiving night. the driver was not seriously hurt but two in the van he hit

at 6:44 we have an update breaking news we're following this morning in san francisco where a sigalert is now canceled after a garbage truck hit a pedestrian on interstate 80. it happened on eastbound interstate 80 at the seventh street off ramp. originally we were told by the chp this morning that the woman, the pedestrian, was actually killed but now we're hearing reports that when they actually

day. i did call the medical examiner's office earlier this morning to see if they could i.d. the suspect at this point but no one is picking up that phone line. police say he stabbed three people around the corner from the regional medical center, then sped off in a stolen minivan. an officer gave chase. at one point the suspect got on highway 680 going the wrong way. he quickly got back on the streets and ended up back here the same neighborhood. after he rammed the minivan into a patrol car the officers shot and killed him. the van rolled onto a neighbor's yard, hitting a tree. >> the cops started shooting at him. >> >> i hear a shot. pop, pop. it was a police action and something that needed to be done and i'm glad they were on top of it and took care of it. >> reporter: we still do not have a motive for the stabbing, that's something detectives are

your sunday so we're looking good there. we head through next week the changes move in. the coldest air of the season on the way. we head through about monday, i want to show you the seven-day forecast to give you an idea. sunday, 70 degrees in the silicon valley. by monday, 61. then talking about the mid-50s by tuesday. widespread frost possible. if you don't live in the sillicn valley we have the forecast on the bottom of the screen. >> door buster deals and all night shopping marathons luring shoppers in for black friday. some violence is being reported in many cities nationwide. overnight in chicago, police shot and injured a driver believed to be involved in a shoplifting scheme at a kohls. police say they had to shoot the driver after the car dragged a police officer through a department store parking lot.

the driver and the officer are expected to survive. two other suspects are in custody. >> in north carolina it was madness in this walmart store. take a look at this video. it was taken right after the high definition tvs and other electronics went on sale. shoppers were running around trying to get their hands on those bargains. this morning we're covering black friday sales. bob will join us live from livermore in a moment. let's start with jay gray. he joins us live at the mall of america in bloomington, minnesota. any stampedes? >> reporter: good morning. the shoppers here coming more in waves, taking it to another level if you will. they come in, work the night shift, take their bags, go home, sleep, maybe come back. now we're seeing the morning shoppers. the good news here is that most of those people we see are spending. most carrying one or two or three bags. and that's something retailers were worried about.

there is one less week between thanksgiving and christmas this year. analysts say the trend is for things to move up. see what i did there. i'm on the escalator 2ing up. right now what they are telling me is most people this weekend will spend around $650 on average. that's up 11% from black friday last year so great news for the retailers, so far it looks like it's coming to fruition here. we've seen a lot of people finding what they tell me are a lot of good deals. what can i get for you? >> you name it. you nailed with it that wind this early in the morning. i'm impressed. thanks so much, my friend. have a great weekend. >> thank you. take care. >> in the meantime let's check in with bob redell, he is at the livermore premium outlets which have been open since midnight. not quite the crowd we saw last year, right? >> reporter: actually, the management here thinks the traffic is close to the same. the only difference you recall

last year the mall was brand new, there were a lot of people coming to see what it was like. there was a backup on 580. we're not seeing that. that's not necessarily because of people, they readjusted the traffic patterns. this has been open since 6:00 last night so the crowds have died down. they have been open for 13 hours. they saw the surge around 11:30, midnight last night. until around 2:00 this morning and then people started going home. there are still hundreds here trying to get in on a deal. we know banana public they cut prices in half. another offering 50% off clearance items and people dropping hundreds if not thousands on clothes and gifts for christmas. >> we spent about $2,000. >> wow. >> but we've saved probably $550. >> worth it? >> enjoying every minute of it. >> i kind of expected sales but

i didn't expect like sales like these. pretty impressive. >> 50% off? >> pretty good. i'll take it. yeah. >> you see the price tag, bam. i paid -- >> what's wrong with this snurs. >> you know what, this is my winter purse but the black -- this doesn't go with my boots. >> you are killing me. >> reporter: national retail federation expecting americans to take more out of the purse than the 180 she spent. they are predicting people in this country will spend $738 on gifts this holiday season. that's about 2% less than last time. that might not be for the area. a professor specializing in retail management says he believes consumers here will spend more than the rest of the nation. he called it a tale of two christmases.

many have been benefiting. do the math, more people have equity they feel richer and spend more. they also got to keep in mind they are the benefit of the ipo and surge in tech stock. management here they don't have the hard numbers but get the sense of the traffic. we're not seeing it on 580 because instead of having traffic officers they found that was too distracting. they got rid of the officers, just asked hem not to come here and direct traffic, they retimed the traffic lights. that's the sense, they have more people, and why you're not seeing the backup. >> sounds like a lot of people are shopping for themselves too. finding those deals. >> exactly. >> let's you do the same right now. thanks, bob. it's 6:54. amazon not waiting until cyber monday to roll out the online

deals, at midnight sunday it's opening cyber monday deals with new offers every 10 minutes that include 50% off top toys. amazon says cyber monday is its number one mobile shopping day. >> supporters plan protests at stores across the country including here. protesters say their wages are too low to live on. critics of the movement say very few of the protesters are actually walmart employees. protest planners say that's because they believe walmart retaliates against employees who krit sides the company. no is a word most kids hear a lot from what they can eat to do to what they can watch. for one group of north bay elementary school students no is an answer they wouldn't accept. at least when it came from one major corporation. garvin thomas shares their story that is making us bay area proud. >> reporter: every wednesday at

noon, the multipurpose room at san rafael sun valley elementary take on a singular purpose. saving the world. something members of the school's environmental club the green team say they know they can do because they are already doing it. the proof they will tell you, is in the palm of their hand. >> i never have been involved in anything quite like this. >> reporter: wilson is an author and was the father of two sun valley kids when he took over the green team last spring. it was a discussion about plastic pollution that got the kids thinking. >> the topic of crayola plastic markers came up and everybody could relate to that. >> reporter: and how the markers were not recyclable. a big deal seeing as crayola makes a half a billion of them a year. so the green team decided to ask crayola to start a take-back program. >> called them and we asked if there was anyone we could talk to.

we talked to the product safety department and they said no, there is no one you can talk to about that. sorry. >> reporter: but no is a word kids doptd like to hear, be it from teachers, parents or major corporations. so, on change.org the kids started a petition and not only did more than 90,000 people sign it, but other schools around the country joined in the crusade adding their voice. >> recycle crayola. >> reporter: the movement grew until one day this spring crayola changed their no into a yes. >> memories of kids jumping up and down. >> we were really happy because we accomplished something. >> reporter: now some 600 schools are taking part in crayola's program. it's a great thing for the future of the earth, he says, even greater for the future of these kids. >> they are watching this thing
