there aren't too many malls in the country busier today than the mall of america near minneapolis. let's check in with courtney reagan. she is in dayton, ohio. courtney, good morning. >> good morning to you willie. many malls like this one have been open all night long and while those thanksgiving day hours did prove to spread out the crowds, no indication shoppers are anywhere near done yet. it's black friday after all. it's retail's most important day. >> ready, set, spend. black friday. the day consumers an estimated 97 million strong shop sales until they drop and the day retailers pray for profits. this year with more stores opening even on thanksgiving the mad dash started extra early as millions gobbled their pumpkin pie and raced to the mall. >> good time to hang out with the family. get our early christmas shopping done. >> we like to wait until black friday for the shopping deals. >> reporter: what's different

this year? thanksgiving came late. so there are fewer shopping days until christmas. that means retailers are pulling out all the stops. >> they're in a race to gain market share and they're giving the consumer every opportunity to come into their store and shop early. >> most forecasters say we'll be spending more this year but the economic recovery has been slow leaving consumers spending carefully. forcing stores to do whatever it takes to get you to open your wallet. >> great prices. it doesn't necessarily mean the retailer isn't making money. by the time we get through holiday it's going to be marginal growth at best. >> there's hope for jolly holiday online. the national retail federation estimates online holiday sales will hit 82 billion this year. a 13 to 15% increase over last year. the majority of holiday sales will still come from brick and mortar stores with technology and clothing expected to lead the way. >> all the retailers are doing by throwing all of these

discounts at us is training the consumer never to pay full price again. >> a lot of places have sales that end at noon. we want to catch those sales before they stop. >> it's fun because just to get out with the big crowds and the hustle and bustle. >> reporter: for all of you nonstop shoppers, don't exhaust yourself too early. cyber monday is just around the corner. and so far online sales off to a strong start. ibm says sales are up 11.5% online. willie, back to you. >> courtney reagan, santa already falling asleep. he has to pace himself. bill simon is the president and ceo of walmart u.s., good morning. >> good morning, willie. how are you doing today? >> i'm good. i assume you got overnight numbers. was it a good thanksgiving for walmart? >> we had a terrific night last night. i was in stores in a couple of different states yesterday and saw customers and associates all happy and shopping. it was really great to see and

as we toured the market and saw what was happening with competitors, it was a very, very busy shopping day. >> walmart's sales have been sluggish over the last three quarters. you yourself tried to tamp down expectations for holiday numbers. what do you think is driving that? why are you expecting a slow holiday? >> it's very competitive. the market dynamics are interesting too. there's macroeconomic factors, changes in the tax laws earlier in the year as well as some more recent issues with some of the government payments in the snack area on the food business. so customers are challenged and that's why we were out in a big and exciting way on black friday to try to help them make ends meet and so our customers could have a great christmas with their families. >> as the president of a company that prides itself on being family oriented, do you cringe at all about keeping your store open on thanksgiving? was that a hard decision to make? >> we have been open on

thanksgiving since the 80s. it's what we do. our people are used to working on thanksgiving. they have been there for quite sometime. so opening a little earlier for us because that's what the industry was headed towards wasn't such a big deal. in fact, many people got to go home earlier than they would normally go home on thanksgiving. >> there will be 1500 protests atwal mart stores across the country. some of your associates and people that represent them are saying they want laiving wage. they want about $25,000 a year which just clears the poverty line for a family of four. are you comfortable with the way you're paying your associates atwal mart? >> we're proud of the people that work for us. we are. they do a wonderful job and as you have seen yesterday we went from being the largest food store in the morning to being the largest general merchant in the evening. it's phenomenal of what we do. we are proud of the pay we have. we pay in the top half of the

retail industry and people will be out asking for me and we understand that frustration after five years of a difficult economy and we're >> with respect, though, mr. simon, many of your employees have come out and said i like working at walmart but i'm not making enough money or getting enough full-time hours that can i feed my family. that i can go to walmart and buy a toy for my kids this holiday season. doesn't that bother you a little bit? >> we have one of the largest percentages of full-time work force in retail and we pay in the top half of retail. our industry is a good industry and it's a great way for people to start. you can enter our company at any level from age 16 to 66 and we have a lot of opportunity for people to progress as they move forward. we provide opportunities and are proud of that and we have seen hundreds of thousands of people who choose to stay for us with ten years and beyond and build a wonderful life for themselves and their families.

>> reporter: the obama administration says the tech experts have been working 24/7 to get the site running smoothly for most americans by tomorrow but they're also trying to downplay expectations. they say this won't be a magical date or a relaunch. according to analysts, though, the president's credibility is on the line. it's crunch time for the obama administration and with the president's poll numbers at record lows, the stakes for vastly improving the health care website by saturday couldn't be higher. >> they have got to come through with a pretty successful completion of a lot of the glitches supposedly they have been working on. >> reporter: the administration says over the past month, tech experts have made hundreds of improvements to healthcare.gov, decreasing error rates and increasing it's speed and ib insist they're on track to have the website support 50,000 users at one time. >> if the bear minimum cannot get online, it will be a political castastrophe. it will most likely boom the

obama administration the next three years. >> reporter: companies will have to keep enrolling through agents and brokers and insurers they will have to keep enrolling. >> we're disappointed in this functionality being delayed for a year. but the fact that the small business marketplaces aren't up and running in every state so there's no loss in terms of what small businesses have access to. >> reporter: still the negative headlines have put democrats on defense. >> i'm confident once we get through the difficult, rocky start, it will be a successful program. >> reporter: republicans pounced with house majority leader eric cantor writing, once again, president obama has unilaterally delayed another portion of obama care. analysts say the president can rebound, but he is running out of time. >> they have to worry that in the second administration when you're already losing a lot of your influence, that everything else doesn't get drowned out by this one subject. >> reporter: now, if the website

doesn't work well by saturday, that could dissuade millions from signing up, especially those young healthy americans who are really vital to making sure the law works. it could be tough to initially determine how well the website is functioning, though, since the administration only releases enrollment figures once a month. kate, back to you. >> kristen welker at the white house. a lot of people working this holiday weekend there. >> absolutely. >> as if the shopping season wasn't crazy enough. now, andrea, gunfire outside a mall in chicago? >> yes. grab your body armor when you go out to the stories. overnight shopping got off to a chaotic start outside of in romeoville, illinois. a shop-lifter tried to get away. officers confronted a suspect that allegedly dragged one of the officers while trying to get away prompting the other officer to open fire. one officer and the driver were hospitalized with nonlife threatening injuries. three people are under arrest. anxious moments in missouri when a natural gas pipeline exploded.

the blast could be seen and felt from miles around and turned the sky organic near sedalia, missouri. no reports of any injuries. it's unclear what caused the explosion. nato will investigate a deadly air strike thursday in afghanistan. an air strike said to have killed a child and wounded two women. it happened in heldmand province. nato deeply regrets any civilian causalities. president karzi condemned it. >> meantime, a drone strike during the night killed a suspected militant in pakistan. >> dramatic video of the crane collapse in the world cup stadium in saopalo, brazil. it killed two workers. a safety engineer warned his supervisor of problems at the site. thursday's schedule launch was aborted right before the plane liftoff because of a last

minute glitch. the rocket is carrying a new communication satellite. encouraging news about lindsey vonn as she recovers from a partially torn ligament in her right knee from a training crash. on thursdays, she was back on the slopes in vail post this selfie on facebook. she calls the first day back on the snow awesome and says she is happy to be doing what she loves. not hard to guess -- skiing. she has not ruled out returning to competition next month. there's a new top dog this morning. an american fox hound named jewel was the big winner at the national dog show, taking home the best in show at valley forge, pennsylvania. jewels will be here later in the program. it was a down to the wire finish last night between the baltimore ravens and pittsburgh steelers. pittsburgh appeared to score twice in the closing minutes. both times, overruled by replay. and then trailing late in the game, pittsburgh tried to tie it with a two-point play. a play that slipped through the

hands of emmanuel sanders. baltimore won it 22-20. a spilled drink is costing brooklyn nets coach jason kidd big bucks. video replay showing kidd is apparently telling tayshaun taylor to hit him before he spilled his drink. it stopped the clock late in the game, after the nets were out of time-outs. kidd said the cup just slipped in his hand, but he is being fined $50,000 by the nba and they still lost to the lakers. >> yeah. i saw this yesterday. it doesn't get old. >> i like his style. that's an expensive spill, though. 50 grand. >> and it didn't work. they didn't win. so i don't know. >> andrea, thanks a lot. dylan dreyer has a first check of the weather for us. it was a cold thanksgiving. still a wind burn on my face from the parade. it is cold across most of the country. look at the southeast right now. temperatures in the 20s in jackson. 52 in tampa. 62 in miami. so you have to head real far

her husband's credit cards. he is scheduled to testify for the prosecution today. he now says he believes the assistants he accuses of stealing when they say nigella let them spend in return for keeping her alleged daily cocaine habit a secret. today her ex-husband, the alleged victim here, is expected to testify, but he has said he believes the sisters. he and nigella got a speedy and private divorce after pictures surfaced showing them fighting at a london restaurant. the alleged drug abuse, he says, was, quote, confirmed to me by others in and around the household. the assistants lived rent-free at nigella lawson's home earning salaries of more than $40,000. they racked up in five years more than $1,000,000 in personal items on their boss's credit cards. francesca hit up designer boutiques nearly every day.

chan chanel, and many others stores. staying at the ritz in paris and soho house on her boss's dime ringing up more than $100,000 in that month in on her boss' dime. the sisters in one year with drew nearly 100,000 just in cash for themselves and say they admitted to at least some of it. were apologetic and wanted to pay it back but when presented with a plan to dock their pay slight, angrily said they were being treated worse than slaves. but the defense says they had an agreement with nigella that they would keep secret her daily cocaine use and abuse of prescription drugs. >> saachi and lawson were a golden couple and we're learning things about them. they're only allegations at this stage which i dare say they would rather were not brought out into the cold light of day. >> reporter: this has been an unusual look inside the finances

a very good friday morning to you. i'm laura garcia-cannon. right now the chp is on the scene after woman struck by a garbage truck on east bound interstate 80 near the seventh street off ramp in san francisco. the chp initially told us the woman was killed, but paramedics on the scene found signs of life and rushed her to sf general. traffic remains backed up. >> this morning investigators trying to figure out a motive behind a violent crime spree in san jose. the suspect was shot to death by police. it started when the man stabbed three people near regional medical center, stole a van, leading police on a short chase the wrong way on 680. he then ended up near mabry road

do with the murder of the man that raped her. >> never ever did i make any indication that i wanted him to be harmed. >> reporter: she overcame a childhood of poverty and abuse to become a psychology professor and raise a child in switzerland. now she sits in this jail facing a potential life sentence for the murder of a man she says raped her in her college dorm room. she never reported the rape to police but told her former boyfriend. he became so enraged he forced her to join him and associates and they confronted ramirez. >> what was your role in that? what happened to you that night? >> i was dragged, pressured, bullied intimidated into that night when they actually took ramirez. >> reporter: he was found beaten

to death but esparza says she left that night never knowing that he had been murdered. >> i never saw him dead but i was terrorized by the violence that i witnessed. >> reporter: she says he frightened him into keeping quite and even coerced her to marry him so she couldn't testify against him. >> it just hurts me that i had been raped and instead of consoling me he destroyed the rest of my life. you know, the abuse was difficult. the rape was difficult. but dragging me through that night haunts me. >> reporter: she remarried and had had a child abroad. she hugged her husband in court. >> she is desperate to make

herself the victim on this case. she is not a victim on this case. she is a defendant on this case. >> reporter: she and van and two others face a murder trial. there are definitely a lot of inaccuracies in esparza's claims. they all pled not guilty but she and her family say this cold case is only going forward because she told prosecutors what happened. >> they would have let me go if i had stayed quite but i decided i'm not going to fight extradition. i'm a lot older now. i can't continue to be afraid by these people. >> when prosecutors first contacted her they said we know you were a victim but once she told her story they changed her mind and charged her as a co-defendant. we'll know more about the evidence when the preliminary hearing comes up next month. it could come down to the word of that of her against her boyfriend. >> you also have a date line out

child in the u.s. guarantees the little darling citizenship and all the benefits there of. >> what do chinese couples say for you? >> harvard, yale, princeton. they want them to come here and get a great education and by them being united states citizens they won't have a problem coming back and getting accepted to the colleges. >> she is at extraordinary conception. an agency that matches surrog e surrogates and egg donors with families. >> 55% is chinese clients. >> 55%? >> yes. >> is that up from say a year ago? >> it has definitely grown 20 to 30% from last year. >> it was very fulfilling. >> reporter: last month janice gave birth to a baby boy for a chinese couple. >> i could not live my life without any three children and the thought of giving that to somebody else is really the main reason why i did it. >> reporter: agencies help

chinese families secure american birth certificates, social security cards and passports before they head home to china. >> how much does it cost to have an american surrogate? >> anywhere between 120 to 140,000. >> not cheap. >> no. >> included in that price, the ability to choose the baby's sex. >> they were choosing to do a gender selection. they were choosing they wanted a boy. >> reporter: and some chinese couples that haven't used their own sperm or eggs asked for a tall blonde egg donor. >> by using a young lady that's taller that they will also have taller children themselves. >> reporter: linda says all they were hoping for was exactly what their american surrogate gave them, a healthy child. >> without her we can't get our baby. >> a lot of parents can relate to that feeling but there are some including members of congress that think chinese couples are taking advantage of the u.s. policy on citizenship. they have talked about passing

far. both retailers reporting a strong increase in sales and traffic both online and in store. for consumers, they can expect to see the door buster deals rolling out throughout the weekend. what's at stake for retailers? nearly everything. it's hard to recover if you stumble on black friday weekend. the national retail federation expects 97 million folks to hit the stores today. back to you. >> thank you, courtney. a cosmic mystery is puzzling researchers who aren't sure what happened to the comet of the century yesterday. there's evidence that some of it survived. they have been watching the come met which is basically a big dirty snowball for more than a year. >> a ferry boat crash injured nearly 80 people traveling from hong kong. it struck an unidentified object

i've been looking forward to this all morning. how to turn your thanksgiving left overs into an entirely new meal. >> if you can't have thanksgiving with the scotto's, the next best thing is leftovers with them. of the new york restaurant fresco by scotto. >> good morning. >> how was thanksgiving in the

scotto house. >> it was great. we worked in the restaurant. it was a wonderful day. >> did you get to go home and eat yourself? >> no we ate at the restaurant with our customers and they loved it. >> which is a good place to eat any day of the year. what are you working on here first of all. >> this is left overs. so i drizzled with honey. >> did you have leftover bread? >> people just pick it up and have a glass of wine. >> here, sweet potatoes and white potatoes. >> you mix them? >> yes. >> here we put some eggs. so it binds it and some fontina cheese. >> okay. >> and best of all is our sausage. we take the sausage out of the casing and we put it right in

here. >> this is going to be yummy. >> i like where this is going. >> would you mix it. >> yeah. >> okay. and now, here is one that we're bredding and putting it in. >> it's a croquet now. >> yes it is. it's going into the olive oil. this is what it looks like and it's delicious. >> that's the final product. >> beautiful. >> do you want to try it? >> i would love to. >> the problem is you're dealing with dry turkey. it's the day old turkey. you can't deal with that. you need a little fat. very simple. we're going to cook it down. we're going to let it sweat down. we're going to add tomatoes. we're going to use a little white wine. not read wine. salt and pepper. >> so you just diced up your vegetables? >> that's all i did.

i have been dicing up the turkey. that's the way it is. let it cook down for 15 to 20 minutes. it's going to look like this. we're going to add the pasta to it. that's what it is going to look like. >> it's beautiful. >> it's delicious. >> what are we finishing in. >> we're going to take our left over pumpkin puree and we're going to make something. >> like a doughnut? >> basically it's fried dough. so we're going is to mix it with ricotta. >> we all have it. >> not everybody has that. >> we're going to mix it with flour and sugar and cinnamon and nutmeg. pinch of salt and some eggs. and mom, as you see, is frying them up. the trick is to use very hot oil. 375 degrees. you want to use canola so it

woke up at 1:30 in the morning sweating the meat sweats. >> what's even worse is the cash sweats. >> i had an overdose off carbohydrates and woke up with the stuffing sweats. >> i'll make no apologies. it's one day a year. >> exactly. i cooked yesterday. i hosted for the first time ever. >> did you? and with a new baby girl. >> yeah. i took a lot of photos. i dressed her up as a turkey. >> come on. >> mainly because that was her halloween costume and my husband likes to save some money. so we doubled it up. we wanted it for halloween and thanksgiving. that's my table. >> look at your table. you went all martha stewart. >> i know. of course i did it and sent it to my mom to get kudos but i hosted my in laws and having mila there was so super fun. she had her first turkey ever.

>> how did that go? >> it was an experiment and we videoed it of course. >> you also made something you brought. >> may i. >> yes, this is for you. i brought you chocolate pumpkin pie i made. it maybe a little bit cold. >> so chocolate chips in a pumpkin pie. it's organic so it's good for you. >> i don't care about that. it's good for you. >> what do you think. >> amazing. >> now erica hill also bought a pie. we got in a pie off in the make up room. >> what does that look like? >> well, i was saying my pie was better than hers and then i was eating some of my pie. thank you for eating that because when i opened the refrigerator door and it was the left over smell. >> basically you're dumping it off on me? >> do you like it? >> it's good. >> later you can say whose is better. i know you'll say mine. >> how was your thanksgiving? >> good. we were at my brother and sister-in-laws. they put on a great show. my wife and kids stayed.

this story is incredible. so there's a thanksgiving note battle on a delayed flight. it played out over twitter. a lot of people talking about it this morning. one man describing a fellow passenger who was outraged she has missed, quote, her thanksgiving. tweeted a blow by blow account over twitter. a woman on here is very upset because she has thanksgiving plans. she is the only one, obviously. praying for her. at one point he decided to send her a glass of wine and a note. it reads dearly day in 7-a. it's come to my attention today is your thanksgiving. it must be hard to not be with your family. please accept this glass of wine. hopefully if you drink it you won't be able to use your mouth to talk. >> nothing says thanksgiving like an airline flight fight. >> you are upset about it. >> his point is dude we're all kind of missing our families right now. there were more notes back and

>> good morning. >> lauren, let me start with you. why does it feel so good to buy things to people? >> we actually get a rush of dopamine in our brain when we consider making a purchase. >> really? >> yes. >> it's a physical reaction. >> it's a science thing. >> just like an addiction. >> is it really? >> how can we help curve this impulse shopping? some of the retailers put things at eye level. the most expensive items. >> the reason why they do that is they know that people -- exactly what lauren said it's this dopamine effect. so they want people to go in and shop. if you think about it, there's six days less this year for people to shop for holiday and the reason why is because, you know, as you know, thanksgiving was yesterday. >> so lauren you say there's ways before you even go out the door to prepare yourself. >> right. >> to control yourself. >> the straight jacket might be a good idea. >> well, you can think about grocery shopping. never go to the store hungry and always bring a list. do your research ahead of time.

know who you're shopping for and how much you plan to spend and leave the credit cards at home and just bring cash. >> and know your budget, too. >> know what you're willing to spend. >> you say we should actually take a lap around the store although, you know, that may seem counter productive because then you're in the store longer. talk to us about that. >> well, the store is mapped out. at the front of the store they have these places called grab bag items. when you first walk in it's brightly colored. they're silos and discounted prices in these areas. and then when you walk in through the store is where the higher priced items -- it could vary from store to store. it could be home wears or a different type of grocery store but, yes, on the outside of the store, there are beauty items and grocery items and then, here's the kicker, when you get to the front of the store, that's when you have the as seen on tv items, the snacks. and they're within four feet of

you and that's where they want you to impulse buy there. >> tell me about the strike zones because they sound evil. we have you in the strike zone. what does that mean? >> stores are doing everything they can to get that rush of dopamine but what you need to do is give yourself 10 to 15 minutes to think it threw basically. that gives the dopamine enough time to decrease in your brain so you can be more racial about whether or not you want to make the purchase. and while you're doing that, try to look down because like you said, jenna, they do put the most expensive items at eye level and if you look down you might find good buys. >> i picture people walking around the store with their head down. >> i always feel like there's great things up. >> way up. >> never look eye level. never look the product in the eye. >> don't do that. >> does it help at all to just keep it on line? if you can't control yourself should you buy things on the
