welcome to "on the money." the record market run continues. is it too late to get in? wh black friday has come and gone. cyber monday is still ahead. how to find the big deals to take chunk out of what you'll be spending and do you have to go social to go shopping. the man behind the best selling video games out there, but are consoles a thing of the past? "on the money" starts right now. >> this is america's number one financial news program, "on the money." >> here is a look at what's making news as we head into a new week. another week, another record for the stock market. the nasdaq closed above 14,000.
12:31 am
the small cap 2,000 setting a record on wednesday at the holiday shortened week. the dow hit a new high of its own. two strong reads on the housing sector. they posted the best annualized gain in seven years. a sign that home construction could gain traction at tehe end of the year. both numbers helped by a strengthening economy. all is fair in love, war and mow men's clothing. men's wearhouse offered to by joseph a. banks. this bid was for $1.2 million. they said they will evaluate the offer. will it be a december to remember for investors or a real turkey? the all important holiday season is now under way. what does it mean for you money?
12:32 am
joining us is liz dunn. also mike holland. thank you both so much for being here today. we have a lot of questions to get through. mike it seems like every time we turn around there's a new record that's been set by the major indices. it took us 13 years to get back this. does this run continue? >> history is a guide, you would say yes. the last 50 years most of the time december has been a good month relative to the rest of the year. this year when you have 25% return the newton's law tends to stay in motion. probably another good. you've got some good numbers here from liz in a second. most important the fed is there. >> what's your gut telling you? >> the fed is there and you think that's what's really deciding? >> it hasn't been a real difficult thing to understand. the fed is being copied around the world because it's worked.
12:33 am
i think the sincerest form of flattery is imitation. you have china. they're all doing the same thing. the fed said they will be here for as long as it takes. that's a few years. >> liz, we're getting a big taste of what the consumer is feeling right now now that we are in the midst of holiday shopping. you had black friday. you have cyber monday coming up. what do do you think the retailers will end up doing. >> i think some retailers will do quite well. it's not going to be everyone. the low end seems to be struggling. that's just about promotion. there are some hot items that consumers want. they said tvs are selling, categories are selling. home improvement category is doing well and jewelry. >> i think you have to pick your spot and be selective. i think the consumer is okay. >> one of the things that concerned a lot of retail competitors is walmart said they
12:34 am
would be offering big, deep discounts. you saw best buy and some over companies come out. they said our margins will get compressed because we have to match the deals. consumer will win, but are retailers going to win? >> some will. i think the most dominant retailers can play that game well. some will be cautious. names like kohl's. >> we talk about how there are fewer days between thanksgiving and christmas. that has hurt some of the retailers. people don't spend as much money. will they do things to make sure people spend with that constrained calendar. >> you saw the big thursday openings this year. that was to add one more shopping day to the holiday season. i think the challenge for the shorter holiday season is you
12:35 am
have less impulse shopping and less self-purchasing. the more days you can get someone like me in the mall, the more likely i am to buy something for myself or something i didn't plan to by. when the days get compressed that's the challenge. i think it makes the promotional calendar more difficult because you get desperate earlier if things aren't selling you have to go deep on the markdowns to get them to move. >> mike, what do you think about how the consumer is fairing and how the brooder economy is fairing now? >> we know the economy is not doing great. it's doing tepid growth as we have described for the last few years. what liz is talking about it's interesting because it's a microcosm of the economy. the fed has helped housing. we have this negative psychology that was broken a few years ago. people at the top end are doing better and the housing market is
12:36 am
doing better. people at the top end of her companies are spending money. >> the one good thing that you can say for consumers, the one good thing you can say is gas prices have been coming down at the pumps and that helps. do you see that translate? >> it does help the low end consumer. gas prices are a big deal for the low end consumer. i agree with mike that the housing prices and stock market is a much bigger deal for the upper end of the market. >> i guess whether or not those gains that we have seen, whether they can continue for the economy because if you look at stock prices, they're not all that expensive if you think we're at 15 times earnings. if you look at the longer trend and believe in the shiler index that we're trading at 24 times earnings a number of years. how do you value stocks? >> i think they're very reasonably priced.
12:37 am
i think the federal reserve has committed in reason and action to supporting the housing market and stock market. you can have continued multiple expense and prices. people pay for the earnings will continue to move up given what fed said it's going to do. there's noeason they shouldn't be believed. we have a couple more years of okay stock market. >> that means you see bargains not just at the retailers but across the market when you look. >> i think we have parts of the market like twitter and amazon and some others that are really crazy priced. it's like lending real estate. parts of new york or california real estate. for a lot of values out there whether it's in real estate or in the stock market things like apple intel, microsoft, companies like this or even walmart, you have companies trading in the teens and very
12:38 am
low inflation. >> all right. thank you both for coming in today. >> thanks for having us. >> thanks. >> we have some updates on two stories we have been following. last week we had a discussion about whether the minimum wage should be raised nationwide. this week a historic vote that will create far and away the highest minimum wage in america. it will climb to $15 an hour at or around the seattle tacoma airport. 23 are and me sells dna testing services and prprovides informa about your health risks. this week the fda warns they have ta halt sales because they have not received regulatory clearance. up next, we're "on the money." shopping for the best deals this weekend. we'll show you how to put bargains on your holiday wish list and save. it's one of the most exciting holiday seasons and a long time in gamers. new consoles are lining the shelves, but are gamers still

the rush of black friday and come and gone but many consumers are still looking for the deep discounts. is cyber monday a gold mine for deals or should you wait a little longer. joinening us is fatwallet contributor, vera gibbons. and tim stevens. thank you for being here. we had a lot of big boxes. walmart and target offered incredible deals. did it work? >> you know that tv for under $100 got people into walmart.
12:42 am
the tv that target had for 229 got people into target. i think it did work. i think the deals will continue to be rolled out. new spins or new inventory altogether. >> they were a little different this time. if you went at 6:00, 6:00 p.m. on thanksgiving you got certain deals. they were there for an hour. seems like they have gotten smarter about rolling the deals. >> the staggered deals, who has what when. fatwallet has been helpful. they're going to the site to look at the coupon codes. the smart black friday shopper are on top of the deals. they know who have what and when. >> tim, if you're looking for the technology gadgets for any of these electronic, is cyber monday the big day? >> it depends. we're seeing sales span out across the two weeks. there's quite a few deals to go around. amazon are rolling out new deals
12:43 am
just about every hour. you never know what will come until the hour before. you really have to be on top of things. if you're looking into something in particular you need to go to fat wallet or cnet because it will be hard to tell. >> i don't know you said the deals will keep coming. i did talk to a former retail ceo who admitted if you're there on christmas eve in their stores they know you will pay anything they ask on that day. don't expect any deals come that day. >> that late in the game, they may be out of certain products and toys even though it's cheaper to buy toys toward the end of the holiday season. the parents don't want to take that risk. they are looking for best prices and shopping around like there's no tomorrow. >> you probably need a little help. if you really want to find out where the best deals are, what are the best apps? how can you stay on top of that? >> the fat wallet is great.
12:44 am
at cnet we have guys updating almost every plin. there's quite a few resources. >> 86% of consumers are using their mobile phones. they are doing their comparison shopping. it's huge. >> the amazon app, you can scan the bar code and find out the amazon price. >> those prices are really hard to beat. >> how do those apps work? is it bots going out searching or eyeballs? >> there's a lot of group help on sites like fat wallet who are look out for these deals. through the amazon app it's looking up the bar code and numbers and doing a price match. >> consume srs are doing their p homework.
12:45 am
>> and getting help from their friends. what about social media? >> it's huge. they're siegning up for alerts and e-mail pps. >> people are posting their favorites. >> it makes me wonder if there's any reason to go back to the stores. >> commerce is huge. people are sitting around watching tv with their tablets, clicking and ordering. >> especially about the news of people getting arrested and stabbed. >> while there may not be as much electronics deal, big day for apparel, shoes and things of that nature. it's also when you see store wide discounts, 40, 50% off the entire store. >> off the entire store. >> if you have a favorite retailer and you want to buy a lot of stuff, go to one store. >> thank you for the tip. >> thank you. up next, we're "on the money". as the man from mobile game rise, what will it take for the

skylanders hit the shelves. are these new editions enough to boost the industry's slowing ste sales. joining me is bobby kotick. thanks for being here today. >> thanks for having me. >> if you've been looking at the state of industry over the last few years it's been concerning. sales are down this year. you have the number one selling game right now with "call of duty." how would you measure the industry? >> that's one segment of the industry. if you look at overall entert n entertainment it's growing at dramatic rates. if you look at new geography like access to china. new devices like smartphones and tablets. overall we're still a small business. we're only a $50 billion
12:50 am
worldwide industry. there's a little bit of changeover. people start to slow their purposes. they wait for the next new exciting thing. we have the xbox 1 and the playstation 4. >> it changes people's patterns. they don't buy on the day of launch. they way to see which system they will pick up. they wait to see what they end up buying for under the christmas tree, correct? >> they do because they're not sure. the device are in such short supply. you don't know if you'll be able to get them at all. until you know exactly what hardware you've been successful to purchase, you don't know which software to buy. >> what do you expect to see just with sales for these new consoles. it helps to have them out there as people buy new games and update the old ones. >> these boxes are fantastic. consumers will be very excited by them.
12:51 am
they offer a whole new set of features and functionality that consumers will really enjoy. over the next five to seven years you'll see the installed base of these systems will probably not be dissimilar from the installed base we have today of current systems. >> you talk about how consumer are changing. they are still gaming but they use them in different ways. they are using smartphones. they are doing stuff they download online. how do you change your strategy to catch up on the ways people are doing things? >> great question. we're focussed on audience convenience. however you want to pay and where you want to play and even how you want to pay. some might want to pay over time. others might choose a subscription. others may choose a pay for a week pass. we're trying to provide maximum
12:52 am
accessibility. >> if i used to go out and buy a cartridge, you still probably get me. are you getting people to pay for upgrades down the road? >> we have some fantastic programs. if you buy a playstation 3 version of the game, for $10 you can get a copy of the playstation 4 version of the game. it's a great opportunity if they want to play the game today but they do get new hardware. the games have evolved where they have virtual components. there's downloadable content. for the first time you don't have to buy the physical product. you can download the full game on your playstation 4 or xbox 1. >> all right. "call of duty" is one everyone is talking about.
12:53 am
"skylanders" is another big issue. let's find out how to play this game. >> it's a game for 6 to 11-year-olds. these characters have memory in them. when you put them on the portal it will unlock your character. he has a top and a bottom. >> you're going to drop him on. >> portal of tower. you're character will appear on the screen. you'll be able to run through this universe. >> i'm going to run. i'm not the best at video games. i feel it vibrating. >> you've done this many times the before. she's a mario. memory muscle. >> i run and a jump. >> jump up on that. >> got it. >> we're going to take this character off. i'm going to take this character who is called washbuckler. i'm going to put him on this bottom. you'll have a character with new
