good thursday morning. here is what is coming up on "early today." senate standoff. working through the night republicans say they are not be obstructionist by delaying votes on obama nominees. finger pointers. new ntsb video released along with details on why this boeing 757 crash landed in san francisco this summer. a developing story aboard the international space station. as scientists scramble against time. plus to the scene of a subzero improbable rescue. it's thursday, december 12 and "early today" starts right now. and good morning to you, i'm richard lui. while you were sleeping your government was hard at work. take a live look at the senate floor.

republicans and democrats continuing an all-night showdown over presidential nominations. one of the first fights after democrats changed the rules. nbc's danielle leigh is live in washington with the latest. how long could this go on? >> a couple of things are at stake. for one, whether or not these people get confirmed. the other reality is this isn't the only thing the senate has to do before the year is up and it's going to affect the other things that they need to get done. this could least easily until saturday. but senate majority leader harry reid is determined to go as long as it takes. even if that means until christmas. if you take a live look at the senate you can see that john cornyn from texas is on the floor right now. they've been taking turns throughout the night. two big nominees they're trying to get through, one is nina pellard who was confirmed to the d.c. circuit court. the other is jay johnson. he would lead the department of

homeland security. no decision yet on him. whole reason this happening, last month democrats changed the rulings, a simple majority is needed to end filibusters to presidential nominees. the republicans are weakened, so they're using everything they have, every minute to consider the nominees and reid says they'll work through until it's done. >> also a vote on the bipartisan budget dealing we heard so much about on wednesday. the house is expected to take up the bill crafted by senator ryan and murray. outside hard lined conservatives say it stunts growth. democrats worry it does nothing for expiring unemployment benefits. a vote in the senate is expected next week on the bill, that would fund the government for the next two years, senate republicans are expected to oppose it, but won't have the votes to stop it. now to a mea culpa out of south africa. a cabinet minister admitting the government made a mistake in

hiring the sign language interpreter you see there at tuesday's memorial for nelson mandela, the man was labeled a fake by the deaf community. and in an interview he said he was experiencing hallucinations while on stage. those hallucinations include seeing angels at that event. he admitted to once being hospitalized in a mental health facility for more than a year. a probe into the asiana flight 214 crash is laying out a fatal cockpit combination. this as surveillance video shows the plane crashing into the sea wall and then cart wheeling around and slamming onto the runway in san francisco last july, three people were killed and more than 200 injured in that. investigators laid out several factors. pilots failed to notice air speed was too low. confusion over how the automated systems worked. even korean cultural sensitivities. one focus the automated systems.

the pilot who was flying told failed to acknowledge four separate warnings from a co-pilot that he was descending too rapidly. and he said his low-level position would make it very hard to abort a landing and he told investigators he was very concerned about manually land g landing. it is a story dubbed the miracle in the mountains. the nevada family who survived two days. call their rescuers valiant and nbc's miguel almaguer made his way to the accident scene for us. >> reporter: on our journey to retrace their steps we take you to the rugged and remote high desert where james glanton, christina mcintee and three four children ages three through ten, spent two nights trapped in negative 20-degree weather. we had to off-road about 35 minutes, this is 30 miles outside of town. you can see the footprints in

the snow. here is the overturned jeep we found the jeep leaking gas smelling of fuel. the family was dressed for the snow and was prepared in other ways. they had bottles of water. we found a machete, flashlight and used interior for shelterer add night. research teams say james glanton kept his family alive by keeping them together and staying with the vehicle. >> jay did one hell of a job keeping those kids safe. there's not a lot of people that would have been able to do that for two days in subzero temperatures. >> reporter: the family gathered sage brush and burnt a spare tire down to the bone to keep warm. we're also told they heated up rocks like this one and put it inside the vehicle at height to keep the kids warm. >> that was nbc's miguel almaguer reporting for us. a crippled cooling system could set the stage for another space walk on the international space station. nasa is currently mapping out a strategy to fix a cooling pump after a faulty valve.

forced a shutdown. the repair job could become risky if a space walk is the only way to fix it. the space walk last july was cut short after a leak in the astronaut's suit caused his helmet to fill with water up to his ears. the six astronauts are not in immediate danger but the repair job could become risky. a juvenile court judge sentenced 16-year-old ethan couch to ten years probation and rehab. reportedly the child's lawyer argued he had quote affluenza. the teen's family thought wealth brought privilege and no consequences. prosecutors sought the maximum sentence of 20 years in the june crash. the teen's attorneys argued for treatment instead of jail time. one prosecutor predicted the teen would be involved in another tragedy in the future. arctic blast of cold air triggered a band of lake effect

snow across the great lakes region, some areas expecting up to four feet of the white stuff by the end of the week. this video shows near white-out conditions on the roads. and billing cairns, when you got that stuff -- >> i don't know how they do it. >> stay inside, right? >> it's so cold, one spot reported 50 inches of snow in two days. >> 50? >> 50 inches. that's a lot. let's talk about the temperatures, because the cold air just came down, it's been with us in the west for a while. another chilly morning, san francisco is there at 39, seattle at 34. we're not as cold as chicago, who is at 2 degrees this morning. but the temperatures are still cold in the intermountain west. this is the end of it. we're starting to sew a warming trend, montana is 32 degrees, 61 in phoenix, 51 in l.a., the desert southwest has gotten rid of the bitter cold. look at phoenix, 17 degrees warmer this morning than this time yesterday. and six degrees warmer in medford. the warming trend, we're heading in the right direction. there's a weak storm pushing

down to the pacific northwest. it won't have a lot of influence, but it will bring a little bit of light rain. we mentioned the snow bands before. there's a look. they'll head up towards buffalo, new york later on today. as far as the snow in the northwest, this isn't a big ordeal with the storm. in the northern extremely northern portion of the cascades outside of bellingham could get a little bit of snow, enough to make trouble on some of the roads that weave their way inside the mountains. but none of the major highways seem much of an issue in spokane, washington, not much for you, either. a tiny bit of snow. enough to shovel or take a broo sunny will feel warm compared to how chilly it's been lately. who knows, this probably is a good chance this was the coldest air the west will see, the intermountain west in
