"today" december 14th. >> from nbc news, this is "today" with lester holt and erica hill live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> we have the whole band back together. i'm lester holt. welcome to "today." >> i'm erica hill alongside jenna wolf and dylan dreyer. this is for many people a day of remembrance and a chance to honor the lives lost at sandy hook elementary school one year ago today and, sadly, our top story this morning is another school shooting, this one in colorado. >> it happened friday in arapaho high school in centennial, colorado, when a student apparently upset at a teacher, opened fire, critically wounding a classmate before he took his own life and happened ten miles from columbine, high school, sight of one of the worst school

shootings in u.s. history. >> you will hear from the students inside the school when the gunshots rang out. ron mott is on the scene for us this morning. ron, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we should get more details about the shooting later today when officials meet with the media later on. there are a lot of questions in the meantime, about why this young man would do this's police believe he was out for revenge as you've eluded. an eerie scene at an american school. students filing out with hands on their head after gunfire erupts inside. >> we heard police coming in and police talking on their radios and screaming and shouting and i didn't hear any of the shots but it was scare why. >> reporter: police say 18-year-old karl pierson, a student at arapaho high school, walked in armed with a shotgun and looking for a teacher. police say it stemmed from an early confrontation or disagreement between the two.

>> when the teacher heard this student was asking for him the teacher exited the school and for me was the most important tactical decision that could have been made. >> reporter: the chaotic frant tick scene was similar to sandy hook and ten miles away, columbine high school in 1999. officials credit a school janitor who started pierson and tripped an alarm in the ble auig and exiting the teacher to safety. still one student was shot while three others suffered what the sheriff called anxiety attacks. officials say pierson was pound dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound as officers closed in. >> the officers got to him and got to him literally within minutes. that is a world of change from the way response used to happen. >> reporter: police were late into the night searching for evidence, including at pierson's home. >> it's just heart-wrenching to

find out somebody is out there that wants to hurt people. >> the student shot who attends arapaho high school at last report is listed at critical condition and classes have been canceled on monday. >> this entire incident terrifying for the students who were at the school. addie knew the shooter and her twin brother was at school on friday as well. good morning to all of you and thanks for getting us with us early this morning. >> hi. good morning. >> delanie, walk us through what you saw. you were in the library. you made your way out. what did you see? >> i made my way out through a side classroom that is connected to the library and it was an empty classroom so i hopped over as many desks as i could and went out into the hallway where the victim was shot. i walked out and i saw her falling to the ground and there

was blood on the floor and i just immediately turned to the first exit i saw and sprinted out into the parking lot. >> so did you actually see her get shot? >> no. i just saw her falling to the ground. >> that must have been a lot to process in that moment. do you remember in that moment what you were thinking? >> that's when i realized how serious it was and i just need to get out of that situation. >> addie, as i understand it, you were in the speech and debate group with the shooter. what can you tell us about him? what kind of a person was he? >> as far as i was concerned, he was a completely normal student. he was intelligent, participated in class, participated in clubs. overall, you would never guess that he would do something so horrible. >> harrison, as all of this is unfolding, as i understand it, you didn't hear the shots

initially but at one point you teacher got a phone call and you start pulling out your phones. you were sitting in the classroom and reading about your school your phones, is that right? >> yeah. we looked up arapaho high school and immediately the five results talk about how many people were injured and what is going on, all of the police reports and that is things went into panic. >> i can only imagine how surreal that was. addie, what was it like when you two were reunited? >> it was ridiculous. i got out of the school and probably 45 minutes before her and it probably took another three hours after that when i saw her. the second i saw her, i stopped and just ran to her and grabbed her and we just cried in each other's arms. >> i can imagine a lot of people were feeling that when they were reunited. unfortunately, you guys have gone through drills for this kind of activity really since you were in elementary school. delanie, how do you think things were handled?

>> i think things are handled great. i mean, i got out of there before, like, the fire alarm went off. i was one of the first people out of the building and as far as i heard, all of the procedures went as planned and they happened very quickly. >> delanie and addie and harrison, we are glad you're safe this morning and thank you for take your time to share your experience with us. >> thank you. this colorado school shooting came just ahead of a terrible anniversary. today is the first anniversary of the mass shooting at sandy hook elementary school. we are remembering that tragedy by paying tribute to some of those who were lost. our national correspondent kate snow has more for us. >> good morning. many families have chosen to leave town this weekend. many don't want to talk but some families ask that we remember their loved ones and recognize the work they are doing now in their honor. >> reporter: one year ago today, they gathered at the firehouse.

the families of 20 first graders and six adults learned they were all gone. >> it's been a year. it's not any easier. my wounds aren't healed. it's just kind of learning how to deal with heartache and learning how to live my life without my mom. >> reporter: eric ka's mom dawn hochsprung confronted the gunman near the door. >> they said they found two women hiding in the closet. i looked at my sister, no way mom was hiding in a closet. she was literally out of that room in a couple of seconds going after a guy with a scary gun. >> reporter: do you think how many lives she probably saved by slowing him up a little bit? >> that's what gets to me through my days. >> reporter: the other thing that gets her through advocating for change. why was it important to for you to seize this moment and be public and say i'm going to stand up for something here?

>> because my mom would -- there is no way that if it was me that died in that school that my mom wouldn't do something. >> reporter: what do you want to change in this country? >> i want to make sure that no kid ever has to get married without her mom at her wedding. >> reporter: erika's wedding day was last july and she visited her mom just before. >> i wore the dress that we picked out and it was a perfect day. she would have loved it. >> reporter: perfect, except she wasn't there? >> she was. she gave me a beautiful gust of wind on a very hot day! she was absolutely there. >> reporter: her mom used to write her notes and letters, sign them with a smiley face she now wears as a tattoo. over the past year, letters have poured in for all of the families and children writing to parents who lost kids. in honor of your mom and everyone else, is there something people can do to recognize this one-year earmark?

northeast. >> reporter: more than a hundred million people may be battling snow and ice across a thousand-mile span this weekend. it started in the midwest. coming down hard in indianapolis. in chicago, people raced to the store for supplies as the first snow fell overnight. >> buying shovels, salt, oil for our snow blower. >> reporter: northeastern states were getting ready at about the same time. >> yes, we have snow blowers and ice melt. >> reporter: it is going to be another rough weekend in new york state where they have just finished digging out from storms earlier in the week. this is the fifth big storm of the season, while the official start to winter is week away. >> you can complain all you want but it won't do any good, that's for sure. >> reporter: the snow continues here as it is expected to do throughout the day and expected to leave about half a foot of snow here. now one good piece of news for people here in this region is that the temperatures are warmer

>> does she know what she got hit with? >> no. she said she kept blacking out and she only remembers -- >> reporter: but friday the alleged victim's attorney claim the authorities botched the investigation. >> i don't have any faith in the nature of this investigation based on the inaction of the investigator. >> reporter: winston has tried to put the focus back on football. >> congratulations. >> reporter: this week, the florida state freshman won the o'brien award for the nation's top quarterback and commented to espn. >> i know i did nothing wrong, but the people just -- people got to realize my family and the coaches and coach fisher and they just supported me through this whole process. >> reporter: so win the heisman tonight, he'll have to overcome five other talented players, but for winston, some say the toughest thing my be overcoming the accusations still making headlines. >> i think for the heisman voters, they want to see if was going to get charged. once they decided not to charge him at this time, that was sort of the green light and make it okay to vote for him for the
