>> reporter: a person believes the seal pipe broke and what happened is that set off one of the fire sprinklers. so you had a combination of that and the fire sprinkler basically flooding a lot of the terminal with two to three inches of water. what is shut down is the baggage claim and the skyway where we are standing at. the security area for terminal a, but what's not shut down is the ticketing area. so what the airport and police are here doing for passengers is asking people to check in at terminal a. then you can take a bus to terminal b and walk back to the gate in terminal a. the gates are not affected by this water main back. only the baggage claim, sky bridge and the security check-in, not the ticketing area. the airport is calling in all their staff this monday morning to try to help passengers to try to not have any delays.

right now they don't think there should be delays, but if there are delays they will be minimal. you can see why the security area ihut down. it is, again, full of two to three inches of water. a man is here trying to sweep it up. and you can see the problem here with the ceiling, a lot is not water resistant material. the foam tiles have been coming down. this is one of the methods elsewhere throughout the terminal. when will the terminal be open? you can see they do need to repair the ceiling to get this watery mess out of here. again, not expecting much in the way of delays because the gates are not affected. they are telling people to check in at a, take a bus to b, walk back to your gate at a. bob redell for "today in the bay." >> quite a mess out there. thank you, bob. >> what a fantastic live shot of the gates opening as planned. we'll get a check of the weather with christina loren.

>> good monday morning to you. new workweek, new forecast. we'll see the 70s today. and it will be just about perfect. the south bay, we are starting now the upper 30s. even 39 degrees up in the north bay, so not too cold just yet. we'll drop off throughout the next couple of hours. i have a whole new forecast to show you in a few minutes, but we'll check your drive in with mike inyou. welcome back. fremont 880 southbound are working nicely at the truck scales, no problem. southbound we have a crash reported south 880 at the stevenson. chp thinks that was an abandoned vehicle, or someone took a joyride into the ditch. no area hospitals have had anybody checking in, so that's the good news of no injuries, but they have to get rid of the car at some point.

no lanes blocked. slow construction with crews still out there. 4:33. it is finals week at uc berkeley and campus police spent the early morning hours reaching out to students in the string of robberies on campus. there have been four robberies and one attempted robbery in the latest week. students are taking cell phones and other electronics. officers stayed out until 2:00 this morning serving hot chocolate to students studying at the library. police set up their mobile command center in front of a hall where the student was attacked earlier yesterday morning. students say they are on edge. >> it is scary because libraries are open 24 hours a day and people take advantage of that because it's finals week. it is always terrifying when you are on campus and you have a lot

of other things on your mind. >> police have made no arrests. a 13-year-old girl declared brain dead after a routine surgery. shortly after having her tonsils removed, doctors at the children's hospital in oakland determined she had swelling in her brain and declared her legally brain dead. overnight we talked to a family member who said the hospital should have done more. >> absolutely. i absolutely believe either protocol wasn't followed or there was a surgical error. >> his uncle says the family is holding out hope that the teen will wake up. kristy smith is meeting with his family right now and we'll have a live report coming up in a half hour. 4:35. happening today, federal investigators are expected to release more information and recommendations regarding last year's refinery fire in richmond. the fire at the chevron refinery sent large plumes of toxic black smoke over much of the east bay. hospitals treated 15,000 people with breathing problems. authorities determined it was

caused by a co roaded pipe that failed and now federal officials will likely recommend changes at the refinery to avoid a similar problem in the future. in the south bay, three people are recovering after their holiday project likely sparked a house fire yesterday afternoon in san jose at a home on coastland avenue near the willow end shopping center. it appears the family was making candles on the stovetop when the candle wax ignited causing the fire. all three people in the home were injured and this morning the red cross is helping the family find temporarily housing. in san francisco 30 people are homeless this morning after a fire tore through an apartment complex. the fire started at 9:30 yesterday morning on howell street across from washington square in north beach. no one was hurt but the fire and water used to put out the flames seriously damaged at least 12 apartments. the cause is under investigation. a suspected drunk driver on the peninsula facing felony hit-and-run charges this morning. the man was driving drunk when

he crashed into a vintage car dealership. when police arrived on the scene, they found the passenger hert but the driver had taken off. the police tracked down the suspect and arrested him nearby. the palo alto city council will vote on whether to pass a law to prevent people from sleeping in their cars. the law is scheduled to take effect in february, but now the council wants to wait until a court decision is made on a similar law in california. that ban is whether it is constitutional. the city will likely use the time to further educate the public about the law. a warning for anyone heading to bay area beaches. the national weather service has issued a beach hazard warning for beaches from sonoma county down to monterey. we could see waves from six to eight feet high as well as very strong tides. the warning will be in effect through this afternoon.

now, you may be heading to the beach today with temperatures pushing 70 degrees in some parts of the bay area. this is a live look at san jose this morning. today is another spare the air day, the ninth in a row. wood burning of any kind is prohibited. although it looks like we won't need it for warmth. not today. >> not during the day. >> let's go to meteorologist christina loren. >> hey, good morning to you. it is funny because we were talking about record lows last week and today we're talking about record warmth in september. we are feeling more like california, 44 degrees in san francisco. the north bay is at 43 degrees. 39 along the peninsula. the south bay kicking off your new workweek at 38 degrees. not as uncomfortable, not as frigid as it has been. and speaking of santa cruz, probably the warmest beach city all across the bay area later on today at about 68 degrees at lunchtime. rounding out the day at 73 degrees. the videographer christina loren. that's right, i got this video for you down in santa cruz.

the headlights passing 101 and 280. we told you about the waves along the coast, keep that in mind that it is cold, so you probably don't want to dip your toes in there. the day will be warmer, though. back to you guys. 4:40. happening today, state and local leaders will hold a hearing today on the poor condition of bay area roads. according to national transportation research group, the san francisco metro area has the second worst roads among the country's 20 biggest urban areas. san jose ranked third. officials hope today's hearing will be the first step in a massive overhaul on california highways. the poor condition of the roads and the congestion puts millions of pounds of carbon dioxide into the air every year and slows down business. still ahead on "today in the bay," new details on the school shooting in colorado. what police say about the 17-year-old victim still in critical condition this morning.

welcome back. a very good monday morning to you. isn't that beautiful? you just don't get tired of it. it's gorgeous with the lights illuminated there. i sigh we have the olympic link there at the bottom, too. that's coming. but what's coming sooner? christmas. just nine days away. and we've just one weekend left to shop. retailers are doing what they can to attract those shoppers. as of last week, the average shopper had only checked off half their christmas gift list. also 40% of shoppers haven't started. how much of your christmas shopping is done? >> none. i haven't even started, but i actually have a method, so i already know what i'm going to get and who i'm going to get it for. unfortunately, most of it is going to be done in one store.

the fed, meaning tuesday and wednesday amid speculation that the central bank will announce it will stop its massive buy-back program. labor costs and manufacturing come out today, so we'll watch for that. the dow at 16 points and the nasdaq adding 3 on friday. yahoo!'s ceo makes an apology after a hardware outage prevented members from accessing their e-mail last week. this stems from a problem with the storage system. engineers thought the process would be fixed quickly, but many users didn't have access for several days and some accounts lost incoming mail. today is the busiest pickup day for the year for u.p.s. with 34 million packages picked up worldwide. 29 million will be delivered tomorrow. u.p.s. expects to deliver 129 million packages the week before christmas. the company hired 55,000 seasonal workers and leases an

by wednesday we drop like a rock, so enjoy the temperatures. highly unusual to hit the 70s. as a matter of fact, it's going to be a record if we do so here in san jose. and i'm forecasting a record for this afternoon. now we have a cooling trend headed our way later this week. you notice the seven-day outlook here at the bottom of the screen. here's a sneak peek of where we are headed, this is santa teresa down in the 50s by thursday. so we'll lose the warmth quickly. back to you, terry and laura. thank you so much. we have new details to share with you this morning on the school shooting in colorado that left a teenager girl in a coma. arapahoe high school will be closed mostly through the winter recess, though they will open certain days so students can collect their belongings and meet with mental health advisers. in the meantime, 17-year-old claire davis was shot at point-blank range during friday's attack, but they do not think that she was the target. investigators say the gunman, 18-year-old carl pearson, was upset with a teacher for being

benched on the debate team. he turned the gun on himself when officers arrived at the school. in the wake of a deadly train derailment earlier this month, the new york city commuter train company going under the federal microscope. this morning experts will begin looking at engineer oversight, compliance with regulations and medical requirements for crew members. the engineer of that train reportedly became incapacitated at the controls just before the crash. he says he experienced a hypnosis-like daze. by the time he caught himself and snapped out of it, it was too late. four people were killed and dozens injured. the family that survived two days in the snowy wilderness sat down with the "today" show for an exclusive interview. the couple and four children who range in age from 3 to 10 are doing fine. their jeep rolled over on a dirt road 15 miles from loveland. the family burned a spare tire for warmth and put rocks on the fire and put the rocks in the car for long-term heat.

the interview airs in a few hours on the "today" show. south africa's ten-day mourning period for nelson mandela has come to an end. this following the funeral attended by 4,500 people in nelson mandela's childhood home yesterday. members of the mandela family delivered eulogies as did several african leaders including current south africa's president. the television broadcast images from the funeral but didn't show the coffin lowering into the ground as requested by the mandela family. david shaw hoping for an upset off the field today. we'll explain after the break. as we look over here to the north bay, dry on the southbound side with the headlights. no real problems. i will point out a new incident heading to san francisco. that one coming up.

east coast taking on the tampa bay buccaneers. they were in control from the start. michael crabtree finally getting the first touchdown pass for the season. he's been out with a leg injury. here's a 52-yard score. the niners beat the bucks to improve to 10-4 on the season. they trail the seahawks by two games in the division. meantime, the struggles continue for the silver and black against former 49er alex smith and the kansas city chief. the raiders down by 11 in the third making things interesting with a 14-yard score from matt to michael lavera. the running back had five touchdowns. the chiefs 56-31 win over the raiders. the raiders are 4-10 on the year. it could be a big day on the farm. >> head coach football david shaw is one of the finalists for the eddie robinson coach of the year award. shaw led the cardinals to an
