>> and welcome back. of course, the holidays a time for family but also a time to think about giving back, and it's on that note that kathy jackson, the ceo of the second harvest food bank, joins me too discuss some of your organization's efforts to try to help feed people over the holiday season. let me start with this question which is over the holidays people have perhaps a more acute understanding of what others need. you see a bump in contributions this time of year. >> we definitely do. in fact, that's why we launch our biggest campaign of the year right now. it's a staggering $13.2 million that we're trying to raise. that's half of our operating budget for the whole year and also 2 million pounds of food. >> how close are you to meeting that goal and what sort of contributions would be appreciated at this point in the year? >> well, sam, i'm gulping a little bit because it's the 22nd of december. our k35ixa campaign goes to midy and we still have $7 million to raise. that's scary.
7:48 am
we also could use a lot of food. it's a time when the need is high, the community is very generous, but we really need to see that right now. >> here is what is amazing to me. you think about our location here in silicon valley and all of the affluence we're surrounded by. you serve santa clara and san mateo county. you feed 1 in 10 people in those two counties are actually receiving your help. >> doesn't that blow your mind? >> it does. >> this is supposed to be a wealthy area, but we saw the demand for food go up more than 50% since the recession, and the numbers are still hanging high. more than a quarter of a million people every single month, 1 in 10 of your neighbors get at least some of their food from second harvest. >> i would think now is a time to be able to tap people's kind of emotions especially given the fact that it gets a little colder over the holidays, people start thinking about how they can give back. do you think is it cyclical? do you see more people thinking about this now? >> we hope we see more people

thinking about it now and, yes, as a general rule we do. i think the holidays are just a time when people think about family, community, gathering together around a table, meals are an important part of that. to imagine that there are kids or seniors or families who can't make ends meet, it's just really scary. and a lot of the reason is because it's such an expensive place to live here. >> if you would, give our audience a sense of the scope of your operation. i understand you're one of the largest food banks in the country. how many people do you feed in a given month? >> more than a quarter of a million people every single month and i'll tell you a little bit about one of those families if i could. they're actually on our barrel. so if you want to see what you think hungry people look like, look at our barrel. it's amanda and philepe. they both work. they don't make enough to make ends meet. they came to the food bank when amanda realized they couldn't

afford to buy something as basic as peanut butter and jelly and fruit for their boys' lunches. >> we're talking about basic livelihood for so many folks in the bay area. >> so many people. that's exactly right. with the cold weather, pg&e bills have gone up. it's just a lot of things coming at these families right now. >> what sort of contributions are you looking for, monetary, food contributions? >> first and foremost is monetary and i'll tell you why. because we can take $1 and turn that into the equivalent of two healthy heemeals. you'd have a hard time doing that at your local safeway. 95 cents of every dollar that's donated to second harvest goes to programs to feed hungry people so it's an investment worth making. if you'd rather put food in our barrels, we love that, too. grab some tuna, some peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables. that's what we need. >> kathy, we have 30 seconds left. tell folks the best way to get in touch with you, how they can get involved with second
