with an update on the fire investigation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. as we mentioned there are still firefighters out here, many hours after the fire started and there were at least 115 here at one point because these old victorian homes are mostly made of wood and you can see they are so close together so firefighters made this a three-alarm fire quickly to try and get as many people out here as possible. still even with that, one home next door at 620 baker street did have a little bit of fire damage. but the fire at the main home 618 baker broke out last night before 9:00. it was a difficult fight for them because when they arrived there were flames and smoke pouring out of the back of this four-story home. now they say it appear that the fire started on the third story of the house, and once they were able to get inside they did find two older men in the home with serious burns, then appeared they had been trying to get out

of the home but could no. neighbors told us that the two men had been working for years to renovate this old victorian home. >> christmas, very sad. a very beautiful house, this couple that lived here, a lot of work, a lot of time, a lot of love in that house. it's really sad to see this happen. i hope they are okay. >> reporter: again, firefighters are still out here because they are still trying to figure out exactly what started the fire last night. no answer as to that. and the top three homes sorry t top three floors are badly damaged so they will be out here trying to figure out what happened there. but as for the two men again, firefighters say they went to the hospital with serious burns in critical condition. live in san francisco, chase cain, "today in the bay." >> thanks so much. >> just in an elderly man missing since tuesday has been found safe in salinas.

79-year-old howard was last seen on tuesday. police have not said where he was found exactly but earlier someone reported seeing his car in monterey county. his credit cards were apparently used there on christmas day. >> the u.s. forest service will hold a meeting for people affected by a wild fire that destroyed 2,000 homes. more than 100 people had to evacuate for several days while the fire ravaged the neighborhood destroying 34 homes before it was contained friday. the fire started december 15 in the los padres national forest. it is 100% contained but still smoldering. happening now, holiday shoppers are not calling it quits after closing doors for one day, many stores opening early to accommodate bargain hunters. people looking to spend newly acquired gift cards. marianne is live. the shopping continues.

>> reporter: it certainly does. it seems like it never ends, right good morning to you. attention all shoppers, get ready for your last big sale of 2013. this kohls department store opened at 5:00 and yes, i have seen one customer go in. i have to tell you right now there are probably more employees inside this store than there are customers. of course the store is hoping for an after christmas surge. retailers know this is an especially good time to lure in people who received gift cards for christmas a. target spokesman says this is the single most popular day to redeem the gift cards. according to shoppers trek, even though this year's shopping season started off with a bang right after thanksgiving, weekly in-store retail sales declined from december 16-22. so what that means for you shoppers this morning is today you'll see a lot of stores offering buy one get one deals, and big cuts in appliances, and

also lots of discounts on toys. you'll also see a lot of incentives to spend more here that the kohls department store, offering you a 20% discount if you spend more than $100. and kohls is not the only store opening up early this morning. across the street at oak ridge mall, macy's will open at 6:00. reporting live in san jose, "today in the bay." >> a lot of shoppers out there. thanks so much. more christmas presents could be on the way. a logjam of gifts and other packages that did not make it to their destinations on time should be delivered today. ups and fedex blames delays on several things including bad weather and increase in online shopping, lots of late shoppers. coming up we'll have a live report about what the shipping companies are now doing to make up for lost time. >> maybe you can think of it as the holidays lasting longer. spreading the cheer. >> to be fair we heard a lot of ups drivers out there so late

trying to get it done. >> they had families too, to go to. >> if you want to get some of those christmas discounts the day after maybe there was a shipping problem, maybe there wasn't. that always works. 37 degrees in oakland. 39 in mountain view and 37 degrees in livermore. temperatures are chilly but we have such a nice warm day shaping up. if you wanted to go straight to the short sleeves you might be able to get away with it. i'd recommend a jacket but by about lunch time we'll climb from 46 degrees in san francisco, to about 62 degrees. you'll ramp up the day to about 68 degrees. so temperatures are going to be comfortable across the bay area. it's the air quality that's suffering. if you think it's bad you should see the central valley so the state of california kind of dealing with this, at least the valley segments. friday, this is what we expect. another round of spare the air. by saturday into sunday, though, a weak disturbance comes through

and this is going to bring better air quality with it. a lot of people suffer from respiratory issues so we're better saturday and sunday as an area of low pressure comes through. a lot of people traveling today. let's check your drive and say good morning to mike inouye. >> good morning. we have the local commute here. we're looking at san rafael, southbound 101, no big deal as far as the flow of traffic. the map, north of here at todd road a crash on the shoulder. southbound through san rafael we took a look and continuing down, 131, we have a crash on the shoulder out of lanes but watch that connector as crews arrive. no injuries reported no. problems into san francisco there or across the bay bridge. you drive down the east shore freeway, the maze, pretty smooth through that area and oakland. we'll give you a live look on

bridge. gorgeous l.e.d. lights. 5:09 this morning. many children on santa's good list got phones, tablets, electronic gadgets. they joined a growing number of kids glued to mobile devices including those still in diapers. erica edwards has more. >> like mobs to a flame kids drawn to the lights of electronic devices. even parents reluctant to embrace the kid technology have given in to repeated requests to hand their phones over. even if it's just for a few moments. >> whether we like it or not these new devices are here to stay. >> reporter: james is ceo of the group common sense media t group found a leap in the number of young children with access to mobile devices. the percentage of kids under 9 who used smart phones and

tablets soared from 38% to more than 70%. this includes more than a third of kids under 2. >> you have all sorts of toddlers and young kids from 0-5 walking up to screens, tv screens and trying to swipe them thinking they are a tablet or a smart phone. >> reporter: some tablets are designed for tiny hands, even an infant bouncy seat outfitted for an ipad. the key is setting a good example. >> if you are glued to your phone or computer or ipad, not paying attention they will do the same thing. >> maybe they won't watch as much of what's on the screen if parents reinforce interaction with the three dimensional world. >> 5:11. there is growing confusion about who will be getting health insurance starting january 1. it comes after the obama administration relaxed the final deadline which was supposed to

end earlier this week. danielle leigh is on capitol hill where health officials are returning to work after the christmas holiday. >> reporter: this morning it's not entirely clear who will be receiving health care from the federally run exchange and when. a health care twitter post tells meem missed the deadline they will be considered for coverage on a case-by-case basis. everyone else starting the sign-up process can expect insurance in february. insurers say who enrolls is just as important as how many. >> the success of health reform depends on having broad participation, getting younger and healthier people. >> groups are intensifying outreach hoping to convince young people obama care is worth the investment. many of his friends have not. >> a lot of people don't care,

records on tuesday, thanks to upbeat economic data on consumer spending and durable goods. most asian markets are closed today. investors here will be looking for numbers this morning on new filing for unemployment benefits. the dow rising to close at 16,357 t the nasdaq adding 6 points closing at 4155. there could be more trouble for target. reports say hackers stole encrypted bank pin numbers. one bank believes they could make fraudulent withdrawals. target says there is no evidence pin da that has been compromised. get ready for the second wave of holid holiday shopping. sales leading up to the holiday were lackluster at best. several chains roll out deals today including macy weighs a buy one get one free offer on

report. mostly clear conditions f. you are traveling today not a bad day to do so. we have this pact of snowfall in the midwest and area of low pressure moving into florida. we're looking pretty good. if you do have plans ahead toward minneapolis you might find delays, also detroit and maybe ft. lauderdale, the only place across the entire nation. recording the delays right now. miami, watch for rain and thunderstorms as well. for us we're talking about the 70s, beautiful conditions, that will continue. 71 in san jose. 65 for red wood shores. the outer richmond district at 65, walnut creek 66 and 69 in pleasanton. not a bad day for shopping or you have the day off, take the family to the beach, you can do so. we'll see a nice weekend as well with temperatures in the 60s. both saturday and sunday.

investigators say space heaters or candles could have started the fire. >> a court appearance for a man accused of raping and killing his 9-year-old neighbor. he will be arraigned in the death of reann murphy. her body was found on december 15. in the mobile home park where they both lived. he called 911 to report the girl missing. >> the united nation says it needs more than 160 million to save the lives of people. some 45 people are trying to find safety around u.n. bases. fighting escalated between government troops and rebels loyal to the former vice president there. the violence is raising fears of a civil lar. >> protesters in thailand are ramping up efforts to top tl government and put a stop to preparations for the february election.

you can see the protesters throwing rocks at police who are responding with rubber buts. they are trying to force their way into a stadium in the process of registering. the prime minister says she wants to form a national reform council to find a way out of the political chaos. >> a new report out indicates that -- new plans for expanding construction in jewish settlements. prime minister benjamin netanyahu plans to announce massive construction. as many as 2,000 homes could be built. the timing of the announcement will reportedly coincide with the expected release after group of palestinian prisoners. it will likely threaten peace talks. >> fights i've:20. >> coming up the big name universities going head to head

this day after christmas, pretty typical this time of year but we'll track down slow spots. >> taking you outside for a live look here as we get things rolling on this thursday, december 26, really nice start to the day. this is "today in the bay." >> good morning to you. thank you for joining us. i'm peggy bunker. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. san francisco fire investigators still looking into what sparked a christmas day house fire that left two men in critical condition. chase cain joins us in san francisco with an update on the investigation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning guys. last night this turned into a three-alarm fire. there were at one point 115 firefighters out here at the scene of this fire. some of them are still out here this morning investigating the fire. there was such a large response because these old victorian homes are as you can see are so close together and of course made of wood so they can burn

quickly and firefighters wanted to keep the flames from spreading. there was damage to the home at 620 baker. the house that first caught fire was 618 baker t fire broke out before 9:00 last night. by the time firefighters got here there were smoke and flames pouring out of the back of the house. it was a difficult fire for them to fight because it started, they believe, on the third floor of this four-story victorian. once crews were able to get inside they found two older men near the front door. the men had very serious burns and appears they had been trying to get out of the house but were not able to. neighbors told us the two men found in the house had been working for years to renovate this old victorian home. >> christmas, very sad. very beautiful house, this couple that lived here, a lot of work, a lot of time, a lot of love into that house. it's really sad to see this happen. i hope they are okay.

>> indeed a sad ending to the christmas day for those men. firefighters did rush them to the hospital in critical condition. we're waiting for an update on their condition this morning but back here live you can see that firefighters are still out here going inside. they want to find out what started this fire. again, we can tell you neighbors said they were working to renovate the home. the top three floors are very badly damaged. live in san francisco, chase cain, "today in the bay." >> thanks so much. family members could decide whether to appeal a judge's deegs allow children's hospital oakland to take 13-year-old jahi mcmath off life support. the family wanted to give the teen as normal a christmas as possible. they put a tree and presents in her hospital room. the teen has been on a ventilator since december 9 after complications of a tonsillectomy. >> it's 5:31.

the search is on for suspects in two separate shootings hours apart in antioch. the first happened yesterday afternoon just before 2:00 p.m. three men drove up in a car trying to rob a man. the victim fought back but was shot in the chest. then three miles away at 3:00 p.m. a 26-year-old man walking on west 19th street was shot in the leg. also by suspects in a car. no word on their deny. police in newark are asking for help to find the meern broke into a home and stole the presents from under the tree. it happened at cherry street not far from the high school. the family didn't realize the difficults were gone until the children rushed to the tree. police pooled together $100 and also the newark police association matched that and delivered that to the family

today. detectives believe the robbery may be related to recent burglaries in the area. >> a judge will hear arguments today. the city attorney and the california federation of teachers want injunctions to keep the school from losing its accreditation. if the requests are not granted the college will be de-accredited next summer. the commission wants to revoke because it says the school has not done enough to fix financial and educational problems. >> happening now holiday shoppers back at it after a one day break, many stores are opening up really early today to make sure everyone has a chance to make their returns, spend their gift cards. outside kohls in san jose, it seems to get characterizie y -- crazerier.

very, very pretty. still pretty festive spirit. 5:40 now. this morning fedex and ups drivers are back to work delivering thousands of gifts that didn't make it in time for christmas. danielle leigh joins us live in washington, d.c. this morning. both carriers now trying to get a jump start to try to make up for lost time. >> reporter: laura, that's true. and trying to make customers extremely disappointed not to get these gifts they had been expecting. they want to make them happy so we did hear from ups that last night they called people in to start sorting through packages at their hubs so they could get them out the door early. fedex also back to work. we got a statement from fedex clarifying what happens. we heard that they had this unprecedented amount of shipments and bad weather contributed to things not getting where they needed to be on time. saying that safety was their primary consideration and they actually had great service over

99% but it's the remaining few now getting their way out the door,le amazon one of the big companies affected by this, responding trying to make things right. they also are giving customers a refund on shipping and a $20 gift card for their next purchase trying to make sure customers don't shy away from the online shopping after this. >> people will. they love to point and click and buy. >> the suspect accused of opening fire in l.a.x. killing a tsa agent is expected back in court and arraigned in district court in los angeles. last week see answeria was indicted on 11 charges including murder. prosecutors say he walked into the airport, pulled out a semi-automatic rifle from his bag and opened fire. one tsa agent was killed, three others hurt. >> look that the christmas day rescue. good samaritans and bomb squad officer save add 72-year-old man

trapped in a burning car on the 405 in southern california. the driver crashed his station wagon just before 2:00 p.m. quite a bit of smoke there. the driver was taken out of the car, and the great news he is expected to survive. the officer also expected to be okay. he was treated for minor burns. a well known homeless sheltder looking for a new home of its own. after 12 years of helping young people in need, the homeless youth alines shut its doors. the shelter says the landlord decided not to renew the lease and gave it 60 days. officials now looking for a new place to set up that shelter. >> we've been in this building for 12 years and possibly the most stable and consistent thing that is in many of the lives of the kids who come through here. so losing this is just another

thing being taken away. >> about 5,000 kids count on that every year. >> thousands of people in the northeast and canada still in the dark from last weekend's ice storm could finally have power tomorrow. it's been difficult for crews because the cool temperatures and snow are keeping the ice from melting off power lines and tree branches. forecasters say some of the areas hardest hit by the ice storm could see 2 to 6 more inches of snow, also strong winds to boot so really tough go there no matter what we're dealing with with air quality. you can only imagine, chilly there and no power over christmas. >> we're so spoiled here. >> we really are. it's going to be really nice again today. temperatures in the 70s. which basically means you can take out your spring and maybe summer wardrobe for the second half of the day today. san francisco, i wanted to show you this live picture clear

here. old glory getting pickup from time to time. the winds are light, we need more wind. that is in the forecast into this weekend so that is the good news. temperatures are going to climb by 42 degrees in some instances. santa rosa, you'll climb from the low 30s now into the low to mid 70s later on today. san jose, 39 degrees now, as we get into this afternoon temperatures are going to climb. so really quite an impressive jump considering we're getting nine hours of daylight. temperatures in the 70s, this is a look at the microclimates if you are headed out and about in the south bay, temperatures will be mild. in the low 70s along the peninsula, same for you. 68 in los altos, and 70 degrees in palo alto for today. mid to upper 60s for san francisco, north bay, east bay and tri-valley all ending up in the upper 60s to low 70s for

the first full week of winter and near-record warmth. good morning. if you are heading out and about maybe in the same boat as us you got to get to work, we're looking pretty good as far as your local weather goes. it's cold enough for frost in the north bay. these are readings later on today. 70 degrees, 68 along the peninsula, east bay 72. with subtle changes to tell you about. in the good direction when it comes to the air quality. >> the bay bridge toll plaza, i've seen a little bit of a pause as some slow moving cars approach that. the cash lanes, that's about it. that's good news. we'll look at the tops, a smooth drive. highway 24 out of the caldecott tunnel. look at that. 59, 58 at the worst spots as far as the speeds go.

the south bay at the limit, northbound even the road crews didn't take place. approach off the san mateo bridge. picking up more cars but no delays all the way here. we do have a little build as far as the low of traffic toward the toll plaza. in the south bay we have a smooth flow as well. this is northbound 101, picking up the volume. the need sensors at the limit from the interchange all the way to 880. back to you. >> probably a lot of cup holders in the cars holding coffee. this is great. hundreds of customers at a connecticut starbucks started a new christmas tradition. since early tuesday every customer driving through they found their coffee order was paid for by the person ahead of them in line. about 450 paid it forward by the time the shop closed on christmas.
