with an update on the fire investigation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. as we mentioned there are still firefighters out here, many hours after the fire started and there were at least 115 here at one point because these old victorian homes are mostly made of wood and you can see they are so close together so firefighters made this a three-alarm fire quickly to try and get as many people out here as possible. still even with that, one home next door at 620 baker street did have a little bit of fire damage. but the fire at the main home 618 baker broke out last night before 9:00. it was a difficult fight for them because when they arrived there were flames and smoke pouring out of the back of this four-story home. now they say it appear that the fire started on the third story of the house, and once they were able to get inside they did find two older men in the home with serious burns, then appeared they had been trying to get out

of the home but could no. neighbors told us that the two men had been working for years to renovate this old victorian home. >> christmas, very sad. a very beautiful house, this couple that lived here, a lot of work, a lot of time, a lot of love in that house. it's really sad to see this happen. i hope they are okay. >> reporter: again, firefighters are still out here because they are still trying to figure out exactly what started the fire last night. no answer as to that. and the top three homes sorry t top three floors are badly damaged so they will be out here trying to figure out what happened there. but as for the two men again, firefighters say they went to the hospital with serious burns in critical condition. live in san francisco, chase cain, "today in the bay." >> thanks so much. >> just in an elderly man missing since tuesday has been found safe in salinas.

79-year-old howard was last seen on tuesday. police have not said where he was found exactly but earlier someone reported seeing his car in monterey county. his credit cards were apparently used there on christmas day. >> the u.s. forest service will hold a meeting for people affected by a wild fire that destroyed 2,000 homes. more than 100 people had to evacuate for several days while the fire ravaged the neighborhood destroying 34 homes before it was contained friday. the fire started december 15 in the los padres national forest. it is 100% contained but still smoldering. happening now, holiday shoppers are not calling it quits after closing doors for one day, many stores opening early to accommodate bargain hunters. people looking to spend newly acquired gift cards. marianne is live. the shopping continues.

>> reporter: it certainly does. it seems like it never ends, right good morning to you. attention all shoppers, get ready for your last big sale of 2013. this kohls department store opened at 5:00 and yes, i have seen one customer go in. i have to tell you right now there are probably more employees inside this store than there are customers. of course the store is hoping for an after christmas surge. retailers know this is an especially good time to lure in people who received gift cards for christmas a. target spokesman says this is the single most popular day to redeem the gift cards. according to shoppers trek, even though this year's shopping season started off with a bang right after thanksgiving, weekly in-store retail sales declined from december 16-22. so what that means for you shoppers this morning is today you'll see a lot of stores offering buy one get one deals, and big cuts in appliances, and

quickly and firefighters wanted to keep the flames from spreading. there was damage to the home at 620 baker. the house that first caught fire was 618 baker t fire broke out before 9:00 last night. by the time firefighters got here there were smoke and flames pouring out of the back of the house. it was a difficult fire for them to fight because it started, they believe, on the third floor of this four-story victorian. once crews were able to get inside they found two older men near the front door. the men had very serious burns and appears they had been trying to get out of the house but were not able to. neighbors told us the two men found in the house had been working for years to renovate this old victorian home. >> christmas, very sad. very beautiful house, this couple that lived here, a lot of work, a lot of time, a lot of love into that house. it's really sad to see this happen. i hope they are okay.

>> indeed a sad ending to the christmas day for those men. firefighters did rush them to the hospital in critical condition. we're waiting for an update on their condition this morning but back here live you can see that firefighters are still out here going inside. they want to find out what started this fire. again, we can tell you neighbors said they were working to renovate the home. the top three floors are very badly damaged. live in san francisco, chase cain, "today in the bay." >> thanks so much. family members could decide whether to appeal a judge's deegs allow children's hospital oakland to take 13-year-old jahi mcmath off life support. the family wanted to give the teen as normal a christmas as possible. they put a tree and presents in her hospital room. the teen has been on a ventilator since december 9 after complications of a tonsillectomy. >> it's 5:31.

the search is on for suspects in two separate shootings hours apart in antioch. the first happened yesterday afternoon just before 2:00 p.m. three men drove up in a car trying to rob a man. the victim fought back but was shot in the chest. then three miles away at 3:00 p.m. a 26-year-old man walking on west 19th street was shot in the leg. also by suspects in a car. no word on their deny. police in newark are asking for help to find the meern broke into a home and stole the presents from under the tree. it happened at cherry street not far from the high school. the family didn't realize the difficults were gone until the children rushed to the tree. police pooled together $100 and also the newark police association matched that and delivered that to the family

today. detectives believe the robbery may be related to recent burglaries in the area. >> a judge will hear arguments today. the city attorney and the california federation of teachers want injunctions to keep the school from losing its accreditation. if the requests are not granted the college will be de-accredited next summer. the commission wants to revoke because it says the school has not done enough to fix financial and educational problems. >> happening now holiday shoppers back at it after a one day break, many stores are opening up really early today to make sure everyone has a chance to make their returns, spend their gift cards. outside kohls in san jose, it seems to get characterizie y -- crazerier.

99% but it's the remaining few now getting their way out the door,le amazon one of the big companies affected by this, responding trying to make things right. they also are giving customers a refund on shipping and a $20 gift card for their next purchase trying to make sure customers don't shy away from the online shopping after this. >> people will. they love to point and click and buy. >> the suspect accused of opening fire in l.a.x. killing a tsa agent is expected back in court and arraigned in district court in los angeles. last week see answeria was indicted on 11 charges including murder. prosecutors say he walked into the airport, pulled out a semi-automatic rifle from his bag and opened fire. one tsa agent was killed, three others hurt. >> look that the christmas day rescue. good samaritans and bomb squad officer save add 72-year-old man

trapped in a burning car on the 405 in southern california. the driver crashed his station wagon just before 2:00 p.m. quite a bit of smoke there. the driver was taken out of the car, and the great news he is expected to survive. the officer also expected to be okay. he was treated for minor burns. a well known homeless sheltder looking for a new home of its own. after 12 years of helping young people in need, the homeless youth alines shut its doors. the shelter says the landlord decided not to renew the lease and gave it 60 days. officials now looking for a new place to set up that shelter. >> we've been in this building for 12 years and possibly the most stable and consistent thing that is in many of the lives of the kids who come through here. so losing this is just another

thing being taken away. >> about 5,000 kids count on that every year. >> thousands of people in the northeast and canada still in the dark from last weekend's ice storm could finally have power tomorrow. it's been difficult for crews because the cool temperatures and snow are keeping the ice from melting off power lines and tree branches. forecasters say some of the areas hardest hit by the ice storm could see 2 to 6 more inches of snow, also strong winds to boot so really tough go there no matter what we're dealing with with air quality. you can only imagine, chilly there and no power over christmas. >> we're so spoiled here. >> we really are. it's going to be really nice again today. temperatures in the 70s. which basically means you can take out your spring and maybe summer wardrobe for the second half of the day today. san francisco, i wanted to show you this live picture clear
