good morning everyone. 4:30. i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm peggy bunker. breaking news from the east coast. we learned that new york's kennedy airport is closed this morning because of the snowstorm that is slamming the northeast. the airport was closed about 3:15. airport officials say they expect it to open in about an hour or so after crews plowed the runways and de-iced all of the planes set to take off. all flights to and from new york city leaving from the bay area are showing on time departure. we'll check -- you want to check with your airline before you leave. >> check with christina loren as she monitors weather all over the country. good morning. >> they are bracing for the coldest shot of arctic air since 1990 in the midwest. meanwhile, we're going to get spoiled in the bay area. temperatures are going to climb into the 70s yet again, unseasonably warm, near-record warmth. then things start to change. we're bringing in showers next

week. we're going to tell you when and which parts of the bay area have the best chance to see that. it's going to be a pretty good morning. we have the 49ers in the playoffs so that's great news. it will be cold at lambeau. >> yes, it will be cold. in fact, you make your way out the door, a little bite in the air with that chill. overall again, still holiday week so traffic does look light especially 880. let's show you the peninsula. again, the same story you can see a few cars there even less in the peninsula. we'll continue to monitor traffic. don't have accidents to report right now. peggy, back to you. >> thank you so much. happening now, firefighters are still on the scene of an overnight fire in east of the village shopping center. at one point a number of tanks exploded in the fire. that sent flames shooting into the sky. most of that fire is out now but crews are still at the scene to put out hot spots. yesterday marin police cleared

out a homeless encampment where the fire happened. crews evacuated one homeless person. a search is planned later this morning. there is no damage to homes or buildings nearby. >> continuing coverage on an east bay family's fight to keep a 13-year-old girl declared brain dead on a ventilator. the family of jahi mcmath and children's hospital oakland will be in federal court, the family seeking to order a -- an order to force the hospital to give the teenager a tracheotomy and feeding tube so they say she can be moved to a new facility in new york. hospital officials have said they will not insert the tubes because they say it's unethical to operate on the body of a dead person. jahi has been on a ventilator since december 12 after complications from a tonsillectomy. >> police are searching for suspects after a 13-year-old boy was gunned down in the first homicide of the year.

dozens gathered last night remembering the life of lee. he was on his way home after an event at the boys and girls club. he was two blocks from his home when he watt shot. >> they shot my baby like a dog. he was the goodest kid and to the people that did this i hope you are suffering. >> lee was a student at alliance academy middle school. police are asking any one with information to contact them. >> san jose police searching for suspects in the city's first homicide of the year. a man found shot to death on east san antonio street near the 1en 01/680 interchange. no word on the victim's identity. >> people in santa rosa will come together to rebuild a memorial for andy lopez. the memorial for the teen was damaged by a fire yesterday. this is video posted on lopez's

facebook page. the causech the fire is under investigation. you might remember in october lopez was carrying a replica assault rifle when he was shot by a deputy who thought that was real. >> follow-up now, san francisco police stepping up patrols around the chinese consulate in that city this morning after an arson attack drew international attention. here is a still photo we obtained from a surveillance camera showing the damage from the fire wednesday night. someone lit the front door on fire after dousing it with gasoline. you can see all of the damage to the front doorway. the lobby was burned. there are burn marks on the building, the workers inside were there at the time but nobody was hurt. fbi and state department says it's likely a criminal act but they are not going so far as to saying it's a hate crime. >> if it was directed toward a person of chinese decent or asian decent or whatever the case may be that is -- that

would predicate that charge. >> the consulate also urnging the u.s. government to help provide more protection for all consulate personnel. >> the fbi says it doesn't believe there is a connection between that latest attack and one twoyn 008. in that attack a group of people poured liquid on a gate in the back of the building. >> tomorrow marks one year since a teen was found dead after walking away from the snow globe concert. alyssa died of hypothermia. investigators think she left the concert and tried to walk back to her hotel in the snow. they say she had drugs in her system. her grieving parents launched always buddy, the campaign in response to her death. that encourages teens to stick together. they think that alyssa would be proud of their efforts. >> so crucial if you are going to a new place or going to a party, just going without a group of friends that you go out as a group and come back as a

group. >> the burn family helped teens who need help with drug problems, taking them to meetings, helping them talk to their parents. >> a man is in critical condition after he was hit by a car in san francisco. police say the crash happened around 5:00 last night near bush and leavenworth in the city's nob hill neighborhood. the victim is a man in his 20s, the driver of the car stayed at the scene, is cooperating with police. still unclear if the man was in the crosswalk at the time. >> still questions about a deadly car crash and whether the ride sharing service uber should be held partly responsible. on new year's eve in san francisco's tenderloin district. he is an uber driver but at the time of the accident uber says he was not on the clock. our legal analyst says it doesn't necessarily mean that uber is off the hook. >> courts going to have to

decide whether this business model shields uber cab from liability. just calling your drivers independent contractors isn't going to be enough. >> others say the bigger responsibility lies with the city leaders to build safer streets for pedestrians. >> happening today, we'll find out how much snow is in the mountains, it looks about a fifth as much as we should have. the state department of water resources will conduct the season's first snow survey state wide today. electronic readings indicate only 20% of normal. state water officials say it's still early in the season and we could still have a wet winter. >> plenty of snow in the east happening now, schools there are closed, people are urnged to stay indoors as this massive winter storm sweeps across the northeast. that storm while houses of miles from skaxt going to cause problems in the bay area. right now more than 2,000 flights have been canceled and

here we're seeing those effects at the airports. nearly two dozen flights canceled at sfo, another 6 through san jose have been affected. temperatures across the northeast dip into the teens with wind chills taking that to 30 below zero. >> it is very cold. >> i'm layered up. i have like four pairs of pants on. >> dangerous out there. the roads are slippery. >> you see those red noses too. if you are traveling in the next few days call your airline before heading to the airport. >> we reported earlier that jfk is closed. >> right now yes. >> in new york city. let's check in with christina. >> good morning to you, scott and peggy. the snow is going to clear out today but really, the strongest component of the system is the cold air trailing behind it. the coldest air in almost 15 years so yeah, it's going to be interesting to see how that plays out. they are gearing up for that. throughout the day today all

you've got to gear up for some bad air quality. it's a spare the air day. the 70s are on the way so we're going to see near record warmth again. records on both sides of the mat. i can tell you these are the records that you want this time of year. it's going to be cold for the 49ers game. winds pick up throughout the day, and that will equate to better air quality as of this afternoon. and boy do we need it. as we get into your weekend, cloudy mornings, beautiful sun-shiny days, and hazy but not too bad. by next week the chance for showers and it is looking a lot more promising. so let's take it to the futurecast. stop the clock for you wednesday, 10:30, the front starting to push into northern california. the best chance for showers overnight wednesday into early morning thursday, and look at this, snowfall in tahoe out of this as well. there's a couple things we're watching. how far south is the jet stream going to dip? that's going to dictate how much

>> two important deadlines for matters before the u.s. supreme court are happening in the next few hours. the government has until 7:00 a.m. to respond to a court order that blocks part of the new health care law. it would have forced some religious organization that provide insurance to cover birth control. an organization then sued saying the provisions violate their religious beliefs. the supreme court gave the government to today to justify the measure. also happening supporters of same-sex marriage in utah have until 9:00 this morning to file legal briefs in response to the state's emergency request to suspend those weddings. >> san francisco superior court warning people about bogus e-mails popping up in in boxes across the area. they appear to be from a woman named elizabeth taylor identified as the clerk of the court, the e-mail tells recipients to attend a january 14 hearing at 11:00 in the morning. it also says to bring important documents, read the attachment carefully, court officials say

peninsula upper 60s, a mix of sun and clouds. san francisco looks good, you're going to see a few clouds to start, then the clouds mix out of here by about lunch time. the north bay good, close to 70 degrees. just about everywhere. santa rosa 69, in the east bay good for 66 in oakland, this is where you might find patchy fog. that should be burning off. the tri-valley, warmest region low 70s. 71 in livermore and pleasanton. talk about what we're expecting after all you have made it to the weekend and maybe you're like us and been working all week long. you want this weekend. 67 degrees in san francisco. as we head through saturday it's warm. you head out to the water comfortable conditions and a clear sky with better air quality. 69 for tomorrow, in livermore and san jose, at 69 degrees as well. so comfortable, unseasonably mild and better than what our 49ers go through sunday. green bay packers, lambeau

lambeau field wack in 1967 action then it was 13 degrees below zero with the wind chill of 48 below. >> people rescued from a stuck ship in the antarctic are now stuck on another ship. 52 scientists and tourists were rescued from an ice bound russian ship yesterday. they had been stranded since christmas eve. now they are on an ice breaker slowly creeking through headed to australia. they are waiting on another sthip bring them. they are today they have to wait longer. the latest delay after the chinese vessel involved in the rescue became concerned it, too, may get stuck in the heavy ice. but they are safe. >> wow. that's good news. they are used to this. coming up on "today in the bay," the bay area start-up with a chance to land a free super bowl commercial. >> this morning waking up to light conditions as far as traffic goes. we have a couple of accidents. we'll get you out the door and let you know what's happening.
