the way this weekend and showers in the forecast. we'll detail it all in a few moments. >> and traffic continues to remain light across the bay area. we're starting to see some slowdowns in typical spots. we'll let you know what's happening on the roads. >> a look outdoors this morning, it is friday, january 3rd and this is "today in the bay." a good friday morning to you. thank you for joining us. i'm peggy bunker. >> i'm scott mcgrew. happening this minute massive flames follow several explosions near a popular north bay shopping center. bob redell is live, crews checking for hot spots. the fire is out, correct? >> reporter: it is. it has been for some time. good morning to you. we're just east of the village shopping center. we're looking at the corte madera wildlife sanctuary,

pretty dark but that's what is there. you see the fire trucks, they are making sure that fire you were talking about does not start back up. it's a fire you can see in this video was going pretty good overnight. it started around 10:45, burned through 5 1/2 acres. that's a new number we. go also caused several propane tanks to explode. they don't know the actual cause, they hope to have that later today once the sun comes up. this is suspicious because they do know it started in a homeless encampment in the marsh, hence, the reason why there are propane tanks on site. one resident of the am kap was on site. was not hurt. it's not clear whether or not that person had anything to do with this fire. what is noteworthy, about with ten hours before this fire started, this was yesterday afternoon, police here did a sweep of the encampment, forcing six people to leave and clean up their sites. we asked police if that might

somehow be connected to the fire, the sergeant told us that would be speculation, there is no evidence of that. he told us it's possible this fire might have been purely coincidental. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you much. family members and friends of the 19-year-old mother hit and killed by a truck in fremont while holding her baby boy has started a fund to raise pay for her funeral and burial cost. the fund for ashley capuchin on a website has raised over half of the $10,000 goal. investigators say she and her baby and her 17-year-old sister were all hit by that truck on new year's eve. this after getting into an argument with family members. the baby is in critical condition in the hospital. capuchin's sister suffered minor injuries. the drive here is cooperating told them he did not see the three in the road. the officials do not meev alcohol was a factor. this morning the family of jahi mcmath along with children's hospital oak hand are heading to

federal court. the family is trying to force the hospital to give the girl a feeding tube so she can be moved to a new facility. christie smith is live at the hospital with continuing coverage on this. christie, this is just the latest wrangling between the two sides. >> reporter: yes, that's right. good morning to you. both sides heading into federal court at 11:00 this morning in the ongoing battle about her fate. now, children's hospital maintained for weeks that jahi mcmath is legally dead, that she was declared brain dead on december 12, three days after the 13-year-old suffered severe complications from a tonsillectomy and other procedures meant to help her breathe. the family says she had excessive pleading and went into cardiac arrest. a state judge ordered that she go ahead and stay on a ventilator at least until january 7, the family has gone to court, they believe she is

not dead. they want the hospital to insert a breathing tube and feeding tube to make that happen, that move. but the hospital has said it's under no obligation to operate on a deceased person. so a possible move still up in the air. >> we've done everything we can to help them transfer the body even though this is a highly unusual request. we are waiting to hear from a facility. we have not contacted a single facility. >> reporter: in court filings the facility in new york was named as one that would accept jahi but on its website it's described as providing outpatient care. there is also an earlier hearing at around 9:30 in superior court dealing with similar issues in the case. christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. >> 5:04. sentencing is scheduled this morning for the martial arts teach here molested a student. investigators in redwood city

arrested they 1-year-old ralph todd in december 2012. a court ruled that he molested a 9-year-old boy in one of his classes. he worked as an instructor in woodside plaza for 12 years. he will begin his nearly four year sentence immediately. >> also in court t 21-year-old accused of killing a man and stealing his play station 4 t suspect pleaded not guilty murder and attempted robbery charges. investigators say collins made arrangements to meet up with ikena to buy his play station 4. when the two met police say collins shot him and sole the console. >> a follow-up now. city college of san francisco has won a legal battle to keep its accreditation at least for now. a trial must determine whether the accreditation commission acted lawfully in its oval wags

of the college. the commission wants to revoke the accreditation because it says the school has not done enough to fix the national and educational problems. the consequences of the closing would be catastrophic. >> meteorologist christina loren joins us now from the nbc bay area weather center. we should be relishing in our temperatures when you hook at the rest of the counsel. >> i know. everything changes next week. but yaw, coldest football game in history. fortunately it's for the 49ers. we'll talk about more about that. this sunday that's going to be one to temperature. 42 degrees in the south bay. look at our temperatures and where we're headed. fard to believe it's early january with numbers like this. 71 the forecast, high for the east bay, 68 degrees in the south bay and in the north bay. we have significant changes our way and the best way to show you is with our temperature trend. look at this. this is the weather story i want

to tell you for today. friday, saturday, sunday, monday, a gradual cooldown. the trend is for the entire bay area. we head through tuesday. area of low pressure, it's going to get closer and bring in more clouds and cold air. we'll be down in the 50s for tuesday and wednesday. wednesday night into thursday we get much-needed rain. i'm going to talk about that coming up. stay tuned. if you got to get out the front door right now we already miss you but anthony's here to help you. >> and it's friday so we're happy about that. we're hooking at the holiday light traffic as we look at now, the pay bridge approach. hardly any fares on the roadway. as we show you what's happening at the bay bridge toll plaza, very calm. good news for you. as we head through the east bay this is one area we typically see that slows through the altamont pass. we're starting to see that happen on 580 approaching

bertha coombs live at cnbc. good morning. >> good morning, scott. we're likely to see volume kind of light with all of the snow here on the east coast, folks likely to have a tough time to make it in. futures point to a higher start after stocks saw red in the first trading day of 2014. the first time since 2008 that the markets started to the down side on the first day of the year, the dow posting its worst day in two months, down 1 they 5, the nasdaq and s&p had theirs in three weeks. reports suggest that manufacturing growth may be slowing in the u.s. and pore important in china. the nasdaq at 4143 after losing 33. facebook is facing a class action lawsuit now over claims that it monitors users' private messages to sell that data to advertisers. the sights reported that

facebook shared web links. a spokesperson says the suit is without nart. >> analysts expect a strong finish in 2013 with a sales rate of about 16 million vehicles and nearly half of those american made cars. the industry outpaced the economy, consumers replace older cars and trucks. analysts are concerned that maybe they saw a little bit of first quarter sales and got them in the end of the year. still a pretty impressive recovery. >> bertha, thank you much. >> as you go out to see these footballs, it's chilly. here at home it's going to ablovely saturday. >> maybe you can save a little of that pg&e money. 47 in san francisco. that's good after the holidays. the south bay at 42.

smooth going. let's of green on the map 0 so good travel, let's take you outside and show you what's happening in palo alto and redwood city. there was an obstruction but you can see a few cars so i think you'll be able to get by that as you approach. use some caution. 101 at wood side. >> police have arrested a man in the killing of a respected priest. they admit they had him hours before the murder and let him go. he was hospitalized for intoxication and erratic behavior. after he was released a security guard at a church confronted a man matching his description but did not detain him. hours later the body of eric freed was found. the motive is unknown. >> a federal judge in chicago will hear arguments today about government surveillance used in the investigation of a suspected

terrorist. defense attorneys for the teenage suspect want to know if police violated the boy's civil rights. when spying on him in 2012. they say the fbi used enhanced surveillance that would constitute unreasonable search. authorities arrested the teen outside a chicago bar where he was trying to set off a bomb he did not know was fake. >> this morning a libyan security official says military troops are detaining two american students in benghazi. we're told that the two are basketball players at benghazi university. it's not clear why they are held and the u.s. embassy has not commented. last month four u.s. military personnel were briefly taken into custody at a check point in northwestern libya and later released. >> new details investigators searching the scene of a deadly bombing in a hezbollah stronghold in southern beirut. yesterday's blast killed five and injured dozens more. the lebanese army says 44 pounds of explosives were placed in an

suv during rush hour. the blast damaged nearby buildings. lebanon's capital has been hit by a number of bombings amid heighten sectarian tensions over the civil war in syria. this protest in cambodia turned deadly when police opened fire on several hundred striking garment workers, killing at least three, hurting several others. police say officers started firing after protesters blocked a road south of the capital and started burning tires and throwing objects at them. the workers demand minimum wage be doubled to $160 per month, so far the government has only offered $100 per month. >> new video this morning of a massive fire in central tokyo which is causing nationwide delays after affecting major train and transportation hubs. japanese media report more than four buildings burned to the ground. investigators say the fire may have started in a video arcade

before spreading to buildings. luckily no one was hurt. >> former us raley prime minister ariel sharon's condition continues to deteriorate. the israeli hospital treating him says key organs are failing. test results also show sharon has a blood infection. you'll remember he had a massive stroke nearly eight years ago and has been in a coma. >> fans heading to the french hospital where former racing champion michael schumaker is in a medically induced hospital. his wife arrived to celebrate his birthday. he hit his head on a rock during a skiing accident and has since had two brain operations. doctors say they are keeping him in a medic hi induced coma. schumaker retired in 2012 after a record 91 race wins with formula one. >> fire investigators in minneapolis say a gas leak may be behind wednesday's massive

explosion. investigators have not determined an exact cause but witnesses are saying they smelled gas before the explosion. one died, 14 hurt. the apartment building had a grocery store on the ground floor. the fire chief says the explosion happened on the second, possibly the third floor. >> 5:21. coming up, a family woken up by an unexpected intruder. forced to call police for a goat that wouldn't back down. >> if they're mad, look out.

goat tried to break into their home. look at the horns. i'd call 911 too. he was breaking down the door when police arrived. the homeowner was locked in his house, you know, you don't have to lock. the homeowner would not come out. the goat then turned on them, tried to get in the police car. >> scary. the front door was like this. they had a window here and the goat is right here hitting the front door. so you could see the signs of somebody peeking out the blinds. they never came to the door. we had to communicate through dispatch. >> i don't blame him. >> the homeowner did not hurt the goat. the goat is fine. a neighbor uses the goat as a guard dog. or goat. the owner did come to get the pet and took him back home. so there. >> i think that's a smart goat. he can try to get in the house, 18 police car.

she's the 13-year-old girl on a ventilator declared brain dead by several doctors. christie smith joins us live with continuing coverage and today is a big day for both sides. >> reporter: yes, good morning. 11:00 this morning both sides go before a federal magistrate for what's called a settlement conference, they are going to try to do is reach some sort of resolution on this. but that may be easier said than done. that's because jahi mcmath's family and children's hospital have been at odds since the 13-year-old was first declared brain dead on december 12, three days after she underwent surgery to have her tonsils removed and other procedures to help her breathe. her family says there were severe complications and she went into cardiac arrest. right now there is a temporary restraining order that prevents children's hospital from taking jahi off of a ventilator at least until tuesday. her family said she want her moved to another facility.

they believe there is a possibility she can recover. before a transfer the family needs a feeding tube and breathing tube inserted and children's has said it's under no obligation to operate on a deceased person and they have no concrete info on a move. >> there has been a number of reports from the family attorney mr. dolan that there is a facility waiting that would accept the body of jahi mcmath, we have not heard to date from a single one of them. >> reporter: that federal magistrate told both sides to be prepared to spend the entire day trying to work this out. and to present confidential memos on exactly what their demands are and earlier hearing is also scheduled for superior court here in oakland at 9:00, 9:30, dealing with these very same issues. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. >> this morning oakland police searching for suspects after a

13-year-old was shot to death, marking the city's first homicide of the year. dozens gathered for a vigil in oakland last night remembering the life of lee weathersby iii. he was on the way home after an event on new year's eve. he was just two blocks from his home when he was shot. >> they shot my baby like a dog. he was the goodest kid and to the people that did this, i hope you are suffering. >> he was a student at alliance academy middle school. police asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact them. >> san jose police are searching for suspects in the city's first homicide of the year, we first brought you the story of breaking news yesterday morning after a man was found shot to death on east san antonio street near the 101 and the 680 interchange. no word on the victim's identity. >> happening now, flames shooting in the sky after fire

and explosion near a homeless encampment. bob is live at the scene. investigators describe this as suspicious. >> reporter: well, suspicious, at the worst, accidental in the least. this is in marsh land. we're east of the village shopping center if you're not familiar with the area. the fire department is still out here making sure that any of the pockets of heat and smoke don't flare back up. this is what it looked hike several hours ago. this started around 10:45 last night. ended up burning about 5 1/2 acres. took a good two hours to be able to put it out. did it start in a homeless encampment. they don't know what the source, what the cause of the fire was, they hope to get a better idea later today. again they say at the least it's accidental and possible it could have been sus spish out. there were several people on

site who had to be evacuated. they got out. we spoke with the police department earlier this morning and what is note worthy from talking to them they were telling us about ten hours before this fire started, so yesterday afternoon they did a sweep of this encampment forcing ten people to leave, asking them to clean up the site. we asked police this morning if that might be connected to the fire. that sergeant told us that would be seklation, there is no evidence of that right now. it's possible in their opinion that this fire might have been coincidental or the fire department is saying accidental. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> friends, family and community members plan to come together this weekend to rebuild a memorial for andy lopez, the memorial was badly damaged by a fire yesterday. this is posted on lopez's facebook page. the cause is under investigation. in october lopez was carrying a

replica assault rifle when he was shot by a deputy who thought that replica was real. >> san francisco police stepping up patrols after an arson attack drawing international attention. a still photo from a surveillance camera showing the fire wednesday night. police say someone lit the front door of the consulate on fire after dousing it with gas 0 teen. you can see all of the building to the front doorway there. burn marks on the building as well. workers were inside at the time. the fbi and state department not ready to call at late crime. >> if it was directed toward a person of chinese decent or asian or whatever the case that's separate, that would predicate that charge. >> the consulate also urging the u.s. government to help provide

more. >> they don't believe there is a connection between this and a similar one in 2008. in that attack somebody poured a flammable liquid in the back of that same building. >> 5:36. on friday, checking in with meteorologist christina loren christina loren to see how temperatures are shaping up. >> we love the weekend. you know, it's going to be comfortable for outdoor plans. cold start to the day, spare the air day unfortunately but we're going to hit highs in the 70s or close to it across the bay area. i want to take you through your various microclimates. we have changes that you will notice if you are working in south bay but live in san francisco. 68 degrees in san jose. comfortable conditions here. we'll see the 70s but no significant wind. that means our air quality will suffer. you are still going to get the readings in the upper 60s but along with that breeze that we really need. and it will continue to increase

throughout the afternoon. temperatures comfortable. your overall trend. through the next couple of days this is fremont. no major changes as we head into this weekend. by monday 65 degrees, average is 60 but then tuesday and wednesday, as that jet stream drops to the south an area of low pressure is going to come through. bringing our temperatures into the 50s even some showers on the way. we'll talk about that coming up. the forecast at the bottom of the screen if you want to in advance. >> with we actually have an accident, this is 280 southbound at john daly boulevard. a person may have jumped over the median. it sounds bizarre. i'll give you more as we go through our morning. right now i want to take you outside and show you what it hooks like at the bay bridge toll plaza. let's show you the map.

talking about that accident. there it is. coming off of highway 1 right around that curve where you get 280 and 1 connect. read more about the chp report as the information comes in. on 80 eastbound on lower deck of the bay bridge there is a stall on the off ramp to treasure island. caution there as well. a few more stalls, maybe people forgot to check their cars but on 580 westbound at north flynn and 680 at the connectors so quite a few stalls. maybe you forgot to fill up. i don't know what the situation. >> thank you much. 5:38. blizzard conditions across several states on the east coast wreaking havoc for travelers across the country. the latest in a live report. >> no such thing. look at this quiet calm weather. a beautiful start to this friday

>>. >> good morning to you. as we take a look over san francisco. a little bit of wind there blowing old glory around in the lower right-hand side of the screen. as we start out the day. happening now, millions of americans along the east coast waking up under a blanket of snow. a major snowstorm swept through overnight shutting down roads, schools, airports and work for a lot of people. it's not over yet. tracie potts is braving the elements on capitol hill. you made it in and out there, what's it looking like? >> reporter: actually not too bad in d.c. you can see the traffic behind me, some snow but the roads are open. the schools are closed, the federal government is open. but people have the option of

deciding whether to come in we got 1 to 3 inches in most areas, 4 or 5 in the outlying areas. it's up north where they are dealing with a lot of heavy snowfall. new york, massachusetts, connecticut, upstate new york there were areas that got a foot and a half of snow. you can imagine what those roads look like. they were pretreated but really it's still treacherous. and the governor of massachusetts told people to simply stay at home. so, they have got challenges up there. back down here we've got power outages, maybe a few thousand or so. and all of this can have a ripple effect not just here but throughout the system. flights are delayed in and out of the northeast so far this morning over 1500 flight cancellations and more than 2,000 delays so peggy, this could have an impact all the way to california and back. >> we heard that actually jfk

was closed to clean up the runways and prep planes so it's impacting a lot of people. thank you for the latest from d.c. >> a trip back to land is on hold for 52 scientists and tourists rescued from a russian ship stranded in antarctic. they were rescued by a helicopter. they were stranded since christmas eve. now on an ice breaker slowly creeping through the ice on the way to australia. this morning they are told to stay put. this latest delay after a chinese vessel involved in the rescue became concerned it, too, may get stuck in heavy ice. >> tomorrow marks one year since the petition who ma teen froze to death walking back to her hotel after a concert. alyssa burn died of hypothermia. investigators think she left the snow globe concert, tried to walk back to her hotel in the snow. she had drugs in her system at the time. her grieving parents launched the always buddy campaign in response to her death.

it encourages teens to stick together. they think alyssa would have been proud of their efforts. >> so crucial if you are going to a new place or to a party or just going without a group of friends that you go out as a group and come back as a group. >> they also hope to help teens with drug problems, helping them talk to their parents as well. >> the state department of water resources will conduct the first snow survey. electronic readings indicating that today's snowback watt are is 20% of normal to date. water officials say it's still early and we could have a wet winter. testing will take place south of lake tahoe. readings will be available later this afternoon. >> and this morning fans head to the airport, catch a flight to the frozen tundra known as green bay, wisconsin, actually though, the weather may keep some fans away. they are having trouble selling

this game. >> take a look at this video from inside lambeau field. you see people shoveling snow. josh will be sitting in those stands for 3-plus hours to watch the niners take on the packers. temps are expected as hoe as minus 5 degrees and wind chill of negative 20. this could be the coldest football game in history. shap man says that bone killing cold will not keep him from supporting his team. >> it is serious weather. you know what, i hope i'm smart enough to realize when i can no longer feel extremities and maybe go inside. >> experts say you can get frostbite within 40 minute. you are not covered properly. the temps might be keeping fans away from the game. green bay fans not going because of the weather. green bay, the experts. there are about 3,000 tickets

after killing a 6-year-old in a crosswalk. on new year's eve in san francisco's tenderloin district he is an uber driver but at the time of the accident he says she wasn't on the flock. our nbc legal analyst says it doesn't mean he's off the hook. >> the court has to decide whether this shields uber cab from liability with. calling your drivers isn't going to be enough. >> others say the big wither responsibility lies with city leaders. >> a massive fire at a lumberyard causing concerns for firefighters. they are worried a silo full of saw dust could collapse. it could all come crashing down. 106 firefighters are on the scene. took almost an hour to put out the flames. nobody hurt.
