>> we are going to stay unseasonably warm here in the bay area for most of the weekend with the building breeze which means better air quality. you can see our san francisco camera starting to shake. >> and good morning. anthony slaughter in for mike inouye tracking a serious accident in san francisco. we'll get you up to speed in the city right now. >> we have a live look outside as well. it is friday, january 3rd, and this is "today in the bay." >> good friday morning to you. thank you for joining us. i'm peggy bunker in for laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. we have breaking news in daly city. >> there are several car crashes to tell you about, one that just happened on northbound 280 south of john daly boulevard. there is also a pedestrian-involved accident of some sort on the southbound side. the chp is shutting down the entire southbound side of the interstate in that area.

we understand a coroner is being called to the scene. we have a crew on the way to keep you updated. let's get to anthony slaughter and check in with a look at the traffic conditions. this is going to be a mess. >> it is going to be a big mess. we're looking at the traffic map in daly city, 280 southbound is what's closed. the accident may sound complex, initial accident happened on 280 northbound, what happened was the driver got out of the car, jumped over the median and was hit by a car on the southbound direction so now we're dealing with really a huge mess in this area so the coroner is called in, ambulance being called in so 280 southbound at john daly boulevard. avoid this area. if this is a typical route you use, you may want to hop over to 82, take that down through a and hop over to 380 and 101. if you have to use this, 101 is your best bet. use 82 to get through this but otherwise it looks like this is going to be closed for the next

hour or so. other than that no major accidents but we'll be here tracking it all morning long. >> thank you. we are also tracking right now massive flames following at least one explosion near a popular north bay shopping mall. the fire broke out in the marsh land east of that shopping center. bob redell is live at the scene. crews checking for hot spots. good morning. >> reporter: right. the fire's been out for some hours now, good morning to you, scott. we are just east of the village shopping center. you see the fire department is still on the scene. they want to make sure this fire doesn't start back up. it's especially a big concern for them once the sun comes up so they have firefighters out here to make sure that doesn't happen or if it does they are able to put it out pretty quick. this is a fire you can see going pretty good. started around 10:49 around a homeless encampment. there's quite a few of them.

or were. it burned through 5 1/2 acres, also caused thaes one propane tank to explode. took about two hours to put out. they do not know the actual cause. they hope to have that figured out later today once the sun comes up. the fire chief, we spoke with him. this was definitely caused by a person. it's a question of whether this was an arson or accident. >> it's possible that it was a cooking or warming fire, propane stove, something along those lines. but until we get in there it's hard to tell it wasn't intentional as well. >> reporter: police and fire evacuated several people. we sbok police who tell us about about 10 hours before the fire started they did a sweep of this homeless encampment. they are trying to get people to leave, pick up, just to try to clean up that place. they do not know if that sweep

was connected to last night's fire. also of note remember, we're a couple of days into the new year, it is the wintertime and yet you have a brush fire that took off very fast. the chief was telling us if this was a normal winter with rain they don't think it would have spread. possibly might not have started because that ground would have been soggy and the grass green. right now it's very dry out there. hence the reason they were dealing with a 5 1/2 acre wild fire in a few days, end of january. reporting live, bob redell. >> a sign of our troubles. >> a look at the weather going on here and around the country. we give you a look at the approach to the bay bridge. we are seeing warm temperatures this week with much of us experiencing weather in the 60s. certainly not the case around the rest of the country. in fact, this morning a strong winter storm is slamming the northeast with new york and new jersey, declaring states of

emergency. earlier jfk international airport was closed due to snow. it was closed about two hours before it reopened this morning. >> long island workers tried to use snowblowers to clear platforms. it's tough times for passengers out there and reporters, braving the chill as they wait for the trains to alive. >> my face is frozen. you stand out here for 10 seconds you get covered with snow. we saw a guy park his vehicle in the lot. he walked out from his car, he was standing on the platform covered with snow. you see it blowing everywhere and you feel hike it's a wind tunnel here on the platform. it's windy everywhere. >> crews have doused the tracks with a special de-icer. you know crews also have

doused the tracks with special de-icer. trains there about 15 to 20 minutes late as you can see. so real tough trouble. they have all the people that commute which can help. at least they aren't on the roads. >> in washington, d.c. they have snow and the federal government told folks, why don't you just come in the you feel like it. we have another reporter out there. let's look. >> this is in massachusetts. >> reporter: the winds have probably picked up to the highest we've seen so far. probably about 20, 30 miles an hour. i've been checking my little thermometer. it's down to negative 10. they are measurings about with one degree. you add on hats why we're seeing negative 20 in some faces. the kind coming this way. the concern in the area is 150 mile area that could see flooding up to noon local time when high tide. it's affecting up and down the

eastern seaboard, we're looking at the moment over 3,000 flights canceled last night and today they expect 1250 flights, 10 thousand dollars flights delayed. in the city they set out about 3,300 crew members to try to keep these streets clean. they have been going up and down throughout evening. working three shifts. what is great about this snow is that it's light. so you can see the ground here. it's easy for these plows just to scrub down the streets. there is no moisture t familiar ra which is sensitive as you know to moisture doesn't even have a guard on it. champagne powder that you would see in colorado. the schools are closed today, all of the city offices are closed. so are the state schools, tor now it's cold and quiet. we'll see you as businesses open. >> we can hear the plow.

here's is misery map. snowstorms affecting air travel. delays and cancellations. the airports with the most weather related issues are newark, jfk and as always, o'hare. >> the usual suspects. when they get this packed with snow it's unusual for thome. it's not the tas here as we get a hook at our temps today. >> we're going to see a beautiful day. a live look at san jose. we have wet weather headed our way. your seven-day forecast here at the bottom of the screen. temperatures are chilly. we're at 34 in the north bay. cold enough for patchy black ice this morning but we're headed toward a gorgeous second half of the day and yeah, give your heater a break if you can take 71 degrees. that's about -- 68 degrees in the south bay. 68 degrees in the north bay.

yes, we made it to thend weekend. maybe you had to work so this weekend is very welcome. we head throughout saturday afternoon. comfortable conditions. you'll see a sunnier sky on saturday than sunday. san francisco is about 67 degrees tomorrow, livermore at 69 degrees. a lot of people they like to get out and about. essentially when you have beautiful temperatures. santa cruz and caramel. not a lot of new snow but there will be some. we head through wednesday and thursday next week, we need that fresh powder here. as you know it's the driest year, 2013 was the driest on record. so we need any precipitation we can get. i'll show you when i'm going to pinpoint those. actually i'm going too accepted it back to you. >> sounds junipero serra fine. 6:09. still ahead, "today in the bay,"

sky high at a southern california's lumber yord. there is new concern a silo may collapse. >> reporter: new this morning the fate of a 13-year-old oakland girl who was declared rain dead weeks ago but is still on a ventilator. it heads to federal court. we'll tell what you is expected coming up. >> we have had a collision there a big traffic issue. anthony is watching that. we have reports that a coroner is en route. we have a crew on the way. most of that feed over to 101.

>> a live look at san jose as the midwest gears up for the coldest shot of air since 1990. we're talking about the 70s here in the bay area. a little rain on the way. i'll tell you when that moves in and your full forecast. >> and tracking a seniorious accident, this is 101 looking at palo alto. expect more company on the southbound side because of an accident that has 280 closed. we'll explain coming up in a full report. >> and here are today's top storie stories. a look for hot spots after what they call a suspicious fire in corte madera. they are quite sure it was man made. 10 hours before this broke out marin police cleared out a homeless encampment where the fire happened. a search for victims planned for later this morning. >> and schools are closed, people urged to stay indoors as massive winter storm sweeps

across the northeast. the storm is forcing cancellations including some at bay area airports. temperatures will dip in the teens with wind chills down to 30 below zero. >> police in eureka arrested a man in the killing of a respected priest but they admit they have gary lie bullok in custody hours before and let him go. the body of reverend eric freed found in the church rectory bludgeoned to death. the motive unknown. >> the family of jahi mcmath along with children's hospital are heading to court. the family is trying to force the hospital to give the teen a feeding tube so she can be moved to a new york facility. christie smith has more from children's hospital oakland. >> reporter: good morning. both sides heading to court at 11:00 this morning for something that is called a settlement conference. both sides working with a magistrate trying to reach a resolution.

that may be easier said than done because jahi mcmath's family and children's hospital have been at odds ever since the 13-year-old was declared brain dead on december 12. that was three days after she underwent surgery to have her tonsils removed. she suffered from sleep apnea. there were complications and she went into cardiac arrest. there is a temporary restraining order preventing the hospital from taking her off after ventilator until tuesday. her family says they want her moved because they believe there is a possibility she can recover. before a transfer to happen the family needs a feeding tube and breathing tube inserted but children's said it's under no obligation to operate on a deceased person. they say they have no concrete information on a move. >> there has been a number of reports from the family attorney mr. dolan that there is a facility in waiting that would accept the body of jahi mcmath. we have not heard to date from a

single one of them. >> reporter: the magistrate told both sides to be prepared to spend the entire day trying to work this out and present confidential memos on what their demands are. also before that even happens there is a similar hearing happening in superior court, also here in oakland trying to deal with similar issues. in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. a follow-up now. police stepping up patrols around the chinese consulate after an attack. here is a still photo we obtained from a surveillance camera showing the fire wednesday night. police say someone lit the front door on fire after dousing it with gasoline. you can see all of the damage to the building's front dworway, to the lobby as women. burn marks on the building. workers were inside at the time. nobody was hurt. the fbi and state department say it's a criminal act but not going so far as saying it's a

hate crime. >> again if it was directed toward a person of chinese decent or asian decent or whatever the case may be that is a separate -- that would predicate that charge. >> the consulate also urging the u.s. government to help provide more protection for consulate personnel. the fbi doesn't believe there is a connection between this latest attack and a similar one back in 2008. in that attack a group of people poured a flammable liquid on a gate in the back of the same building. >> investigators in minneapolis say a gas leak may be behind wednesday's building explosion. investigators still have not determined an exact cause but witnesses say they smelled gas before the explosion. one person died in the blast, 14 were hurt. the apartment building had a grocery store on the ground floor and 10 apartments upstairs. the chief says the explosion happened on the second or third floor. >> there are new concerns a silo may collapse, this is in

southern california, because of a fire, a massive one that broke out in a lumberyard. firefighters say the silo contains saw dust and if they put so much water on it, it could get too heavy and topple. fire officials say at least 106 firefighters are on the scene north of san fernando. took nearly an hour to extinguish the flames. >> talking so much about these temperatures that other folks have across the country. look at times square in new york. live pictures now. you can see some folks on foot and not completely dumping snow. some places are expected to get a foot or more. >> jfk has been closed. this is my favorite time of year, the gloating time of year. >> you know, right here the envy of the entire nation, scott and peggy. it's going to be hot in l.a., talking 80s down south. we're going to get the room temperature readings. 40s to start the day.

unfortunately our air quality is suffering because of that lack of rain. everything changes, our pattern significantly changes as we head into next week. remember if you want to check out your seven-day forecast find out when showers move in right here at the bottom of the screen. highs warm by 10 to 15 degrees in some cases yet again that means the upper 60s to low 70s all across the bay area. you'll notice an improving sky. that means better air quality. we need it. this weekend onshore flow and that means cloudy mornings, mild days, more sunshine on tap for saturday than sunday. into next week the pattern changes. much cooler weather on the way and showers possible as well. so we want to show you the temperature trend. this is for fremont but overall the bay area is going to drop like a rock between today and tuesday. we're talking about 67 for friday, 66 saturday, down to 66 in fremont on sunday and look at the difference between monday and tuesday. dropping into the upper 50s as

we head throughout wednesday, the upper 50s continue. then we bring in the rain late wednesday night into thursday. we really need it. right now it looks like the entire bay area is going to get a little bit of the wet weather as we head through thursday. early thursday looks the best. let's check your drive. on that traffic alert here is anthony. >> earlier if you are just joining us we had an accident on 280 northbound, the driver got out of the car and was hit and killed, unfortunately, on the 28 southbound side. so now 280 southbound is closed. and there's lots of police activity a. coroner and ambulance and fire department on the scene. you need avoid 280 at john daly boulevard f. you have to use this hop to 82, take that all the way down if you got to go on the side streets and continue on 82 if you have to get to 101. eventually take your route down and hop back over to 280. let's show you palo alto now. this is going to be the corridor

good morning to you. it's 6:24 as we take a pretty look at the bay bridge. there are some traffic issues this morning even though it's a light commute day. stay tuned. anthony's going to update us this morning. >> boy, what a beautiful picture. a trip back to land is on hold for 52 scientists and tourists rescued from a russian ship that was stranded in the antarctic. the passengers were rescued from the ice bound ship by a helicopter yesterday. they had been there since christmas eve. they are now on an ice breaker

that is slowly creeping through the ice headed to australia. this morning they are told to stay put. the latest delay comes after a chinese vessel involved in the rescue became concerned it could get stuck in the ice. >> to a really, really cold place, green bay, wisconsin. it's the destination of choice of some die hard 49ers fans. they are headed to the airport as we speak. believe it or not some people may not go to the game because of the weather. >> the green bay fans may not. look at the video from inside lambeau field. you can see people actually shoveling snow in the stands there at lambeau. josh will be sitting in the stands for three-plus hours on sunday afternoon. he is going to watch the niners take on the packers and despite attempts they could dip as much as minus 20 degrees. >> it is pretty serious weather. you know what, i hope i'm smart enough to realize when i can no

longer feel extremities and go inside. >> that's a fan. >> subzero temps may as we said keep fans away from the game. as of this morning believe it or not there are about 3,000 tickets still available. the packers only have until 2:00 this afternoon our time to sell those remaining tickets and avoid being blacked out in wisconsin and other parts of the midwest. playoff games at indianapolis and cincinnati are also running the risk of being blacked out in those cities. of course these playoffs, though, mean that the super bowl is around the corner. >> a lot of people looking forward to that. an oakland start-up is a finalist to is their own commercial run during the super bowl. goldie blocks encourages girls to pursue math and science careers, it's one of four small businesses still in the running for a free 30-second spot on the super bowl. the grand prize winner will be announced before the game on february 2. goldie blocks was started by a

>> good morning to you. i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm peggy bunker in for laura garcia-cannon. >> we have an update to a breaking news item in daly city. there are several car crashes just happened on northbound 280 south of john daly boulevard. there is also a pedestrian-involved accident of some sort on the southbound side. chp shutting down the entire south bound side of 280 in that area, the coroner is called to the scene. we also have a crew on the way. let's check in with anthony slaughter right now with a look at traffic conditions. good morning. >> good morning. this accident happened about 30 to 45 minutes ago. what happened was there was an accident on the 280 northbound side at john daly. then the driver got out of the car, hopped over the median and was hit by a car on the 280 southbound side. that car is actually still on the loose and so chp and san

mateo law enforcement agencies are asking anyone this morning to be on the look out for a heavily damaged car because it actually fled the scene. 280 southbound at john daly boulevard will be closed for some time as the coroner has been called in and also ambulance and fire department is on the scene to assess the situation. if you have to use this route, i recommend using 82, if you have to go through colma, if you can hop over to 380 and eventually 101 if you have to head south. let's show you what it's like at palo alto. lots more cars on the road in this area because of this closure. be advised as you make your way out, 280, avoid that area. use 101. back to you. >> thank you, anthony. happening now, crews are chesapeaking for hot spots after an overnight fire in corte madera. pleas one propane tank exploded in the fire. the fire burned more than five

acres in the marsh and the village -- behind the village shopping center. the fire was reported about 11:00 last night at the site after homeless encampment. that had been cleared out yesterday afternoon by police. bob redell is talking to investigators. he will join us for a live report and updating us on the situation coming up in about 15 minutes. >> we're also watching the weather as a brutal snowstorm blankets most of the northeast. the states of new york, new jersey, under a state of emergency. this is video from upstate new york where temperatures are expected to plum neat minus 10, colder perhaps, about a foot of snow has fallen in the area in the last 24 hours. >> meantime more snow in massachusetts. forecasters call for eight to ten inches of snowfall sin am some areas they could see up to two feet of snow. 1600 pieces of heavy equipment aren highways helping to move

snow out of the way. the national guard is also authorized to help. >> snowing this morning in washington, d.c. >> you can say that again. that's where we join tracie potts live outside in the thick of it. last time not snowflakes, not coming in sideways. >> reporter: we definitely got the easy end of this storm. i mean, you see those pictures from new york, from massachusetts, there is no question we got away easy. we got 1 to 3 inches of snow. some of the outlying areas here got 4 or 5 inches but nothing like what we saw up north. snow plows did their best but take a look at these roads. >> terrible. >> it's slippery, scary. >> reporter: in massachusetts schools closed early. the governor told state workers to stay home. >> everyone makes their own lane and the lines mean nothing.

>> a car ran through the median in front of us. >> reporter: new york sent out 1700 snow plows, major expressways there are closed. in pennsylvania, snow started falling during the evening rush hour causing a chain reaction pileup. >> dangerous out there. the roads are very slippery. >> reporter: some areas expect a foot or more. the problem isn't just snow, it's windy. >> we get very nervous about winds over 40 miles an hour. >> reporter: and it's cold. temperatures will dip into the teens with wind chills down to 30 below zero. >> it is very cold. >> i'm layered up. i have four pairs of pants on and four sweatshirts. >> reporter: flooding is a concern along the coast. no o snow is expected through mid morning. not here. it let up. the temperature here with the wind chill has been hufberring around zero for the last few hours.

but the federal government is open so scott and peggy, a lot of people as you can see from the traffic behind me are actually coming in to work. they have liberal leave. if they can't get out they are not required to come in but the government is open. >> liberal. i admire the people who it's optional to come in. >> i'm on my way in. boy, we're not dealing with that. we are -- we pulled the long straw. >> really f. they are looking at us on the west coast, they are like why can't we have the 70s right now. you know what, all good things must come to an end. we're going to see significant changes. san jose now mostly clear, we are starting out in the 40s, upper 30s out in the north bay and temperatures are going to climb as we head into this afternoon. let's get to your microclimate forecast. for this friday. yes, you made it to the end of the week. maybe you had to work all week. weekend looks great.

temperatures in the upper 60s in the south bay. that's where we have the unheltsyest levels of pollution. more cloud cover and a little bit of a building breeze. great news for our air quality. the clouds streaming in. especially at the coast and along the peninsula. north bay good, we could see black ice this morning. it's cold enough. out in the east bay temperatures are golsing to reach the upper 60s so uniform with offshore flow as we head throughout tonight area of low pressure closer and closer to the coastline. that's great news for us. that's going to increase our building breeze and translate to much better air quality. you can see this morning it's not as hazy as it was. our air quality has improved and will do more so throughout the next couple days. as we head throughout tomorrow we could be sparing the air. we might have unhealthy levels

with a lack ever win. then sunday into monday looking much better. if you have a fireplace, why do i have a fireplace i skrant a fire, you're going to be able to do so as you head throughout the week. a lot of people that's what they are complaining about, they want to get toasty in front of the fire. they haven't been able to do so because of this unhealthy air quality. everything changes next week. an update on the traffic alert. hopefully going to send it back to you. >> thank you so much. a follow-up to tell you about. city college of san francisco won a legal battle to keep its accreditation for now. a judge ruled it must determine whether the commission acted lawfully on its evaluation of the college. the commission wants to restroke the accreditation because it says the school has not done enough to fix problems. the consequences of the closing would be catastrophic. >> also just in jfk airport in new york extending its closure

until 7:00 our time so 10:00 on the east coast. it first shut down due to snow at 3:30. >> and jfk almost never shuts down. four buildings burn to the ground in tokyo. we'll tell you how the massive fire is impacting all kinds of things.

protest in cambodia turns deadly when police open fire on several hundred striking garment workers, kills at least three, hurting several others. officers started firing at these protesters, blocking the road south of the capital after they started burning tires. and throwing objects. the workers demanding minimum wage be doubled to $160 a month. so far the government has only offered $100 a month. >> and new video this morning of a massive fire in central tokyo which is causing delays after affecting a major train and transportation hub. japanese media reports that more than four buildings burned to the ground before crews were able to get the blaze under control. the fire may have started in a video arcade before spreading to buildings. luckily no one was hurt. >> coming up propane tanks burst into flames igniting a marsh near a shopping center.

happening now. flames shot into the sky after a fire and explosion near a homeless encampment overnight. it broke out in the marsh land east of the village shopping center. bob is live at the scene. you've been asking questions. what's the latest? >> reporter: well, good morning to you there, peggy. we're east of the village shopping center and right now we're looking across the water at the corte madera marsh wildlife sanctuary. the fire department you can see is still out here making sure the fire does not start back up. it's especially a big concern once the sun comes up. they are on standby. this is a fire that as you can

mile from the accident scene. we have been stuck in traffic about 30 minutes. i mean an absolute standstill. that was until maybe the last two minutes or so. the chp was able to clear the sould shoulder and did that so two tow trucks and a medical examiner's van could get through. we're trying to follow them and get closer to the scene. but cars are not moving. some have their engines off. some opening the doors to get some air. it was mentioned before but what we're hearing is what happened is there were several collisions on northbound 280 about 5:30 this morning. an suv may have gone into the center divide at some point a pedestrian possible hi from one of those cars jumped out, over the median from the northbound to the south bound lanes was hit and killed. there appeared to have been hit and run and that goes back to the wrond the look out issued. so at this point, just avoid the
