record setting snow falls all over and the temperatures are brutal. >> imagine what this is going to travel. 3,700 flights have been cancelled between yesterday and today. jfk international airport, new york city right now completely shutdown. >> that's going to be a rough one. meantime, you mentioned 13 inches in boston. this is newton, massachusetts just outside of boston. this is a live shot from a car driving on the roads. obviously, if you don't have to be out, do not go out on the roads. this gives you a sense of how tough it is. >> a lesson for kids and their families, stay home. more than 1 million students will be staying home. boston schools are closed as well. thank you, matt, for the hat as well. >> not a problem. if the kids are home they can go to central park. it's beautiful here. a lot of sledding time. this storm is impacting a huge section of the country all the way up into new england. ron mott is in boston, massachusetts, they have gotten a ton of snow there. ron, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you, matt. it's still snowing. i can't believe this. it stopped for a few hours between 3:00.

i was up at 3:00 and it was not snowing as hard as it is now. but this has been going over 24 hours for the most part. we have got a lot of snow now. officially yesterday in boston, a record 10.6 inches. right about now here downtown, we're thinking the total is about 14 inches. i live on the northshore. we're closer to two feet up there. when it stops snowing, eventually it will stop snowing, i think. we'll be left with all the snow and very bitter cold. >> the roads are still terrible. people are still driving like bad drivers. >> reporter: in chicago, the season's first major storm got even these experienced weather warriors that didn't expect the wallop of lake-effect snow so soon after the new year. >> i didn't think anything was actually going to come and i woke up this morning and i was like, you have to be kidding me. >> reporter: in maryland, truck drivers decided to play it safe riding out the storm on the side of the road instead of getting stuck on it. >> i'd rather be on the side of the road than run into anybody. >> reporter: in connecticut, the high wind gusts threatened a

storm surge and flooding while the bitter temperatures were the lowest in 18 years. >> it is very cold. tough to pump your gas in this weather. >> reporter: in new york city, for residents and visitors in the city that never sleeps, the snow slowed down their pace just three days after millions watched the ball drop, times square looking like a ghost town. overnight today viewers tweeted their views sending pictures of how they weather the storm and here in the boston area, the storm is leaving many wondering what kind of winter is in store. >> it's new england. it's snowing out. who thought that was going to happen? >> reporter: down on the south shore of boston. they had blizzard conditions overnight. three hours or more of sustained winds of 30 plus miles per hour. they had surf coming off the ocean. really nasty conditions down there. temperatures, bitter today. right now in boston, it's about 3 degrees with a wind chill anywhere from minus 10 to minus 20. minus 25 in some areas. it's nasty out here. almost vacant downtown today. a lot of folks are staying home.

that is a pretty good thing so enjoy the weekend. back down to new york city and you. >> before we start complaining about standing out for 10 minutes, ron has been out for the better part of 30 hours now in frigid temperatures up in boston. ron, thank you very much. meantime here in new york, the governor ordered three major highways closed overnight, including the long island expressway. kristen dahlgren is with us from long island. how is it looking over there? >> reporter: we still have the snow coming down pretty much sideways here. really high gusty winds. a blizzard warning remains in effect through this afternoon. take a look. i can show you if i step back here just how deep it is. this is some of the drifting snow from the plowing but they're really not able to get it off of the roads as much as they want. this is the problem. take a look. it's the light fluffy snow. really hard for the plows to get off. even though the state had 470,000 tons of salt ready to go, when the temperatures are below 15 degrees, it doesn't work.

that's why they have the long island expressway here closed. remember what happened last year back in february, cars abandoned on the long island expressway because the snow was just too deep. so they're trying to avoid that. we are still seeing people enter the highway here. that's a misdemeanor. everyone from the mayor of new york city to the governor saying, if you can, stay off the roads. stay home today. stops, we're going to have those bitter, bitter cold temperatures. back to you guys. >> all right, kristen dahlgren, thanks. just a second ago, al was with us here in the snow but he said for his forecast he really needed to be in by the monitor inside. >> really needed. >> it's a very toasty monitor. it's awfully nice. i'm telling you guys, trust me when you come in, hot cocoa and a monitor. you can't beat it. let's show you what we have got going on right now. this system is pretty intense. i mean, we are looking at snowfall rates that are kind of

mind boggling. show you what we have gotten already. central park, 6 inches. probably 7 or 8 by the time its over. boston 13.6. north of boston, we saw 30 inches of snow and it's not done yet. here's the big problem. normally you have a 1 to 10 ratio, precipitation to snowfall. it's so cold and so dry, this thing is actually making a ratio of 1 to 30. that's why we're seeing those amounts up in boston. we're going to continue to see this and then add the temperatures. bangor, feels like 33 below. 18 below in boston. 21 below in albany. new york city, it feels like 2 below. here goes the system. tapering off along the new england coast this morning. by noon, the strong winds continue with the below zero temperatures and the gusty winds continue. look at these winds, wind gusts of over 38 miles per hour in nantucket. over 20 miles in the city. it's going to continue and guess what? the snowfall amount is going to continue to pile up.

boston, another 6 to 9 inches and we've got another storm to talk about. this weekend, low pressure brings a cold front across and it travels right up along that front and look at these snowfall amounts. we are talking denver, you're going to see upwards of 6 to 12 inches of snow. heavy snow through chicago, another 6 to 9 inches and from central illinois into northeastern ohio, 9 to 12 inches of snow. it continues. let's head down now to washington d.c. where we are going to find tom costello. the good news, tom, the snow has ended. the bad news, the damage and the pain is going to continue. >> yeah, we're talking about travel across the country. let's start with air travel. we have a live radar image of all the planes in the air this morning. not nearly as many as we would normally see this time of the day but we have airports closed. so keep that in mind. nationwide up to 1,400 cancellations.

yesterday 2,300 cancellations and delays. in new york, they're reporting significant delays and because of that, it's empty right now. flight cancellations already mounting there. come out live, we go to the misery map here. flightaware.com's misery map. this gives awe sense of what is happening in terms of airport cancellations and delays and the effect. of the three airports in the new york city area, we have 57 cancelled flights until 8:00 in the morning. they are mounting through the day. the d.c. area showing delays and cancellations. 19 cancellations. boston airport was closed last night and now up until 8:00 in the morning. 14 canceled flights. let's go back to o'hare in chicago. 12 cancelled flights. that's just until 8:00 in the morning. now to the roads, nearly 86 million people traveling by car over the holidays. today, it's the east coast that's the focus. we have this real-time traffic and all the major interstates in the eastern half of the country. yellow and red of course are trouble areas and look at what's happening in the new england

area. as you saw, big problems around boston, new hampshire, vermont, et cetera. keep going now. we want to take a look at what's happening through the rest of the country. the biggest problems beyond i-93 up in braintree, massachusetts. we have ice and snowpacked conditions. i-93 up there as well. now we want to take a quick look now at amtrak. critical on the northeast corridor. the northeast regional service operating on reduced schedules between boston and washington today. so this storm, expected to impact about 100 million people and likely to make for a very slow day of travel across much of the country. guys, back to you. tom, thank you very much. we'll have much more on this storm throughout the morning. meantime, natalie is on vacation. peter is in. you have a shocking story out of dallas. >> yeah, let's give you some of the latest headlines. including this one. a frightening scene thursday night at a dallas condominium complex that ended in the shooting death of a prominent attorney. police initially responded to

the building on a burglary call but when they got there, they found 47-year-old michael schmidt barricaded himself near the lobby. >> we have one that's hiding. one that's hiding. we need everyone to get by the squad cars and find cover. >> witnesses say schmidt fires a half dozen shots at the officers. police say at one point, he moved toward them and that is when the police returned fire killing the man. no officers were hurt in that incident. more trouble for passengers stuck on a research ship in antarctica for more than a week. a chinese helicopter rescued all 52 passengers from the russian ship thursday. the scientists and tourists were taken to an australian icebreaker. but now that ship has been told to stop its journey home and to wait. that's because a chinese vessel involved in the rescue became concerned it too may get stuck in the heavy sea ice. so the australian ship will stay

put for now as a precaution. a suspect is in custody this morning after a beloved catholic priest was found dead in a california church rectory. gary lee bullock was arrested on thursday after police said evidence recovered at the crime scene linked him to the murder. the body of reverend eric freed was found wednesday after he failed to show up for morning mass. police said there were signs of a violent struggle. bullock had been in police custody earlier that day for public intoxication and for erratic behavior. officials said a motive for the killing is still unknown. firefighters battled a fire overnight at a lumberyard in southern california. officials say more than 100 firefighters battled the flames and no injuries were reported, fortunately. the cause of that fire is under investigation. embattled toronto mayor rob ford is running for another term. >> yeah! >> there you go. campaign manager al roker. ford was the first one to show up when the registration opened up on thursday. he faced intense pressure to

resign last year after admitting to smoking crack memorably in a drunken stupor. he told reporters, my track record speaks for itself. a whale watching group in southern california got their money's worth on thursday. check this out. the group was looking for great whales in the channel eyelids but they found something even better than. a pod of orkas. seven of them. they put on a great show. the group followed the pod for the next two hours. for the first time in more than a decade there's concerns that football fans in three nfl markets may not be able to watch their home team's playoff games on tv. cincinnati, indianapolis and green bay all have until today to sell out their games or risk a blackout. it seems the at home flat screen tv experience is taking a toll on ticket sales. >> wow! >> that would be a big deal, especially in green bay where these fans live for the packers! >> they do.

hasn't happened since 2002 that a playoff game that has been blacked out. >> i think the flat screen experience and the fact that the weather is going to be brutal in those three cities. >> and maybe more enjoyable inside. yeah. >> peter, thanks very much. how about the rest of your forecast? >> let's talk about these cold temperatures. it's going to be really rough. dangerously rough over the next at least 72 hours. right now for high temperatures, chicago 20. 36 in atlanta. 55 in houston. 1 in bangor. 16 in new york. and then look what happens saturday, temperatures 13 in minneapolis, 29 chicago. 61 in new orleans. getting into sunday the really bitterly cold air. minneapolis minus 12. 11 in chicago. monday, chicago's high will be 8 below. it will be 14 below in minneapolis. 39 washington. new orleans 42. 29 in atlanta. and tuesday, we'll start to see a little bit of a rebound but it's going to be dangerously cold as we go on into the middle of next week. we'll get to your local forecast

housing recovery. part of that due of course to the low interest rates. is that going to effect things as the interest rates start to go up in 2014. >> we are literally building only half the houses that we need in this country versus where we were 50 years ago. it's a growth economy. people are tired living with their folks, living with their in-laws. big change going to continue in 2014. >> good news for buyers and seller as like. when we look at -- let's get back to the stocks now. 2013 ended on a good note. it was a pretty strong year but then we see this cautious opening yesterday for 2014. what does that tell you? >> first we have to look almost every single time when we're up 20% over a many, many year period, the next year was good. don't take your queue from what happened yesterday except for to look for bargains. >> this gets right into your new book "get rich carefully." any advice for investors on

where to find the opportunities? >> people are ix looking at long-term themes that are going to work. wellness, bio tech, social and mobile for tech itself. these are all long-term themes that are going to last for many years. nice to have you here this morning. carson has an exclusive this morning with the ceo of snapchat after the massive security breach yesterday. >> we do. good morning to you. we told you about it on thursday. 5 million users names and phone numbers posted online. the ceo said who ever hacked the site did it using it's find friend service. >> we call it abuse of the find friend service. >> reporter: the 23-year-old ceo outraged over the hack. >> the tool we developed to help snapchatters find their friends was used by someone to find user names of people that weren't their friends. this person had 4.6 million friends and they were able to

match those phone numbers to user names and release that list. an anonymous hacker or group of hackers posted the personal information on snapchatdb that's been taken down. now he is trying to reassure snapchat's viewsers who according to the company send 350 million imagines a day. >> technology businesses in general are susceptible to hacking and that's why you have to work really, really hard with law enforcement. with security experts. internal and external groups to make sure you're paying attention and addressing security concerns. but he played down the fact that snapchat had been warned by a security firm that the site was vulnerable days before the hack. >> i believe at the time we thought we had done enough but i think in a business like this, in a business that's moving so quickly, if you spend your time looking backward, you are just going to kill yourself. >> reporter: he also points out no pictures or videos were

on mcdonald's dollar menu. ♪ good friday morning to you. 7:26. several car crashes have snarled traffic on 280 in both directions near john daly boule.@km. the chp shut down all but one lane on the southbound side of the interstate in that area, you can see wow, the live pictures, a huge backup. a coroner has been called to the scene. we're getting more on this. we check in with christie smith at the scene. what do you know? >> rich: good morning to you. they had only opened up one lane of southbound 280 just to clear out the traffic that was backed up. that is shut down, again what the chp is telling me that these two lanes of northbound 280 should be opening up in 30 to 40 minutes. you can see one of the cars, that suv, the chp tells me that

car hit the center divide northbound this morning, another car clipped it from the back. the driver of that car got out, ran to the shoulder of the northbound lanes and for some reason back across in the southbound lanes and that's where they say that driver was hit multiple times and killed. what they are asking for is that any one who may have hit that driver even though you may not be at fault in all of this to give them a call because they are trying to complete their report. for when all of these lanes might be open, they are telling me it would certainly be after the northbound lanes, so again for that 30 minutes or so and say at least for the southbound lanes it would be over an hour before it reopens. that's the latest from here. live in daly city. back to you. >> what a mess. according to what she said they need help. that hour it was dark out. people may not know they hit him. >> and in fact, you are not used to seeing anybody on the highway at that hour. again you want to give san mateo

county law enforcement a call if you even the person that you think you might have hit that person. they don't want to get you in trouble. want to take to you the maps and what it's looking like. it's all snarled up in this area, 280 southbound, john daly boulevard, one lane getting through on the southbound side. on the northbound side two lanes getting through. you can see a lot of traffic building on 82, the alternate route to get around this, you'll notice on 101 lots of heavy traffic as we look outside in palo alto. more company here again because of that closure. >> thanks. i'll have another local update for you in about a half hour.

♪ 7:30 now on a friday morning. it's the 3rd day of january, 2014. take a look at the scene. newton, mass, where the snow has been falling for the better part of 12 hours now. they're getting a foot of snow there. meanwhile, take a look at the main highway that connects new york city with the end of long island. that's the long island expressway shut down. snow falling in the new york area, since, i don't know, 6:00 or 7:00 last night. it's piling up. >> it is piling up here in new york city. if you look out behind us, on

the plaza, you can see the flags around the rink, around the christmas tree. look at how they're blowing in the wind. that gives you a sense too of this is not just a snowstorm as we know. this is coming with some really heavy wind. >> that creates the blizzard conditions. you don't have to have the heavy snow. you'll have 35 miles per hour winds. quarter mile visibility or less and for three hours or more. and a lot of places in new england will be seeing that. >> because it's so cold, they can plow the roads here. the wind picks up that light powder and puts it right back on the roads. adding insult to injury, the salt, brian, the chemicals become far less effective at these temperatures. >> almost not worth putting it on. we'll be following that throughout the day. we do want to get you caught up on the other headlines. they waited for more than a week to be rescued but now the trip home is on hold for the passengers of the stranded ship in antarctica because there are concerns that the boat they're now on could get stuck in the ice as well. meanwhile, a federal

some accidents so not much going on there. as we go into new york and central park, folks getting out and starting to enjoy themselves as ron talked about, people finally enjoying. but as we look up into boston, as we continue on into i-95, whdh providing this picture for us. you can see i-95 is a mess. snow covered causing big problems. snowfall still continuing about another 1 to 3 inches but as you get into boston proper and out into nantucket, up to another 9 to 12 inches of snow before this is over. rest of the country, we are looking gorgeous day in l.a. 70 degrees. and windy down through texas. 54 up in houston. up into watertown it's minus 2. minneapolis by monday night, their overnight low will be 28 degrees below zero. that's what's go >> good morning.e( 7:34. we're looking outside and we're

my gosh. what is it going to be? >> wild! guys? >> thanks, wild al. turning now to georgia where a fugitive banker accused of fraud is ordered to remain in custody. we first told you about this yesterday morning. aubrey lee price was presumed by some to be dead but he was actually on the run as we told you on thursday. that is until a traffic stop led to his arrest. here's nbc's mark potter. >> reporter: aubrey lee price came to court accused of raising millions of dollars from investors and losing their life savings in a fraud scheme. his appearance now, a far cry from when he was a small town georgia bank director and minister. after vanishing a year and a half ago, his time on the run came to an end along i-95 in brunswick, georgia. when he was stopped because of his window tinting was too dark. >> he asked if i wanted to know who he was and i said yes and he said i'm going to make you famous.

good morning to you. 7:56. big news on the commute this morning, three lanes ever southbound 280 in daly city will be closed until at least 11:00 this morning following several crashes, in one case someone got out of his car and run over. let's get to anthony slaughter tracking the traffic. >> unfortunately that accident happened in the dark hours of the early morning commute, so san mateo county officials are asking if you may have hit the person and don't know it or maybe you saw what happened definitely want to give a call. 280 remains closed. one lane until 11:00. this just in on 280 northbound, all lanes now are getting through so that's good news. you can see from our chopper cam, things are sluggish here in this location. and so this is going to be something we watch all morning long. we'll have more coming up at nbc news at 11:00. you'll notice as we look in palo

>> it's a simple braise that it's the calf. below the knee above the foot. it gets soft and beautiful and delicious and it's an easy winter braise for a cold day like today. >> for someone that's never braised before, walk us through it. >> it's the chef version of what a crock pot does. you take a cut that has a lot of g gelatin. >> it could be pork belly or cheeks. that's out there but it's something we do. pork osso bucco and the two main indiana sta ingredients. >> garlic. >> and a little apple cider as our base liquid. >> apple cider. >> and then half and half with a little bit of chicken broth and this goes in the oven and you can forget about it for awhile. >> i like the forget about it.

good news is we're losing the snow. that's the good news. bad news is we're going to be looking at a lot of snow left over. georgetown 17, bay shore long island 11.5. it's all going to freeze up. as we told you, normally you get about 10 inches of snow out of one inches of rain. this system is triple that. we're talking up to 30 inches of snow out of this whole thing. now, current temperatures right now, it feels like 18 below in albany. 28 below in burlington. 6 below in new york city. these temperatures will be dropping over the next 24 hours. the system moves away. that's the good news. by noon, we're still going to be looking at strong winds and blowing and drifting snow on into this afternoon. you look at these winds. winds gusting over 30. same in nantucket and boston as well. we're looking at an additional 9 to 12 inches of snow in eastern massachusetts and here comes the second storm a little bit later
