7-year-old kidnapped at gun point is now safe, the suspect behind bars. take a look at live pictures outside of the house on humming bird drive. police say david allen douglas was arrested on marina place, about a block away from the police department with the missing girl, natalie. they say this woman alerted officers by honking her horn after she spotted douglas acting suspiciously in the back seat of the car. >> we got a phone call from my other sister, there's a missing little girl and she told us what kind of car it was. i was like, wait, we're sitting right next to a gold toyota. i'm about to get out and look and see if this is the little girl. >> happy we found it anywhere and the girl was returned safely to her family. >> police suspect natalie's mother was being followed from

walmart by douglas. when she got home the perpetrator scooped up natalie and dragged her into his car. there was another kidnapping attempt in that parking lot on thursday and they believe douglas was involved in that kidnapping attempt as as well. >> police rushed to a home on cape horn drive just after 3:00. when officers arrived, they noticed a man wielding a knife. they ordered the man to drop the weapon and he refused. police say that's what he made a move towards them, forcing one man to fire his weapon. >> it's not common, it's weird, it's uncomfortable. i've always felt safe in this neighborhood. so when i drove home this afternoon to see suv police and sedans, i knew something was wrong. >> the aggressor was shot at least one time and remains in the hospital recovering from

nonlife threatening injuries. no officers were hurt. san jose police say the female officer who shot the man has been placed on administrative leave. >> the flu has turned deadly killing a 41-year-old woman. she died from the h1n1 strain on december 23rd. if you haven't done sooañ÷ alre get a flu shot. this year's vaccine does protect you against the h1n1, also known as the swine flu. >> most of the flu that we're seeing this year so far is h1n1. if you'll remember, that's what we saw in the pandemic in 2009, it's the pandemic strain of h1n1. what's unusual about it is that even young, healthy adults can get quite sick and even land in a hospital from h1n1. >> now is the time to be vigilant. the worst of the flu season may still be ahead. february is typically the peak.

last month's death was in santa clara county, which also has six other h1n1 cases. marin county reports ten cases and in contra costa there are at least six cases. health officials stress those numbers are normal. >> yesterday a superior court judge removed jahi could be removed from oakland hospital in her current condition as long as jahi's mother is willing to assume full responsibility. sheep has been declared brain dead by both hospital physicians and independent doctors after complications following tonsil surgery. >> if i feel my child was suffering in any type of way, i would not keep her on that machine. i love her that much since i would let her go. but since i see improvements every day, i will fight for jahi every day. until my heart stops or her

like temperature on your skin dropping anywhere from 15 to 20 degrees below zero. if you're not an elite athlete, an average person outside, you could get frostbite between 15 minutes and 30 minutes. if it gets minus 30 for wind chills that, would set it into the top three coldest nfl playoff games of all time. we'll hope not for any overtime and a 49ers win on schedule at the end of the fourth quarter. patchy fog in the peninsula around palo alto, sunshine in san jose right now but a chilly start to the morning. not much wind out there right now. that's going to change this afternoon as the winds pick up, we will see dry conditions in our hill tops and hopefully that will push some of the smoke out of south bay, which is another reason we have another spare the air day. napa, the mid 30s in movado, 41

in san jose and there's some of that thick fog. down to the south around oakland and san mateo on the coast. between now and 10:00, we'll probably hang on to the patchy fog until the winds pick up as we head through the afternoons. air quality forecast at least for today another spare the air day. smoke mainly up in the south bay and then as the winds pick up, we hope the skies clear a little bit more as we wrap up the weekend. on the seven-day forecast, we have some changes ahead. the temperatures starting to warm on up. gilroy close to 70. reno and lake tahoe in the mid to upper 40s. breezy during the afternoon but notice on the seven-day forecast, starting to see a few changes there. for one thing, we'll see cooling temperatures coming in as we head through monday and tuesday. at this point, doesn't look like

a chance of any rain. 65 in san jose, around the peninsula mid 60s, san francisco in the low to mid 60s, as you get down towards palo alto, it lab little warmer. once the wends pick up out of the north, we loses low clouds. and also the tri-valley looking pretty good today, highs in the upper 60s to near 70. the numbers staying quite comfortable for this weekend. it is a real shame we could not have hosted the playoff game at candlestick to enjoy some of these forecasts. >> and yet, rob, they're still going to be wearing t-shirts or short sleeves, which blows your mind. >> mystery solved. somebody has finally come forward with december's mega millions winning ticket. it was purchase, as you know, in san jose. the gentleman's name is steve

chan. he is now $324 million richer, at least before taxes. >> reporter: more than two weeks ago steve tran did the same thing he's customers are doing today, walked into jenny's gift shop in san jose and bought several tickets for the mega millions jackpot. the difference is tran went off on vacation for two weeks and had no idea the numbers on these tickets would chang his life forever. others grew hopeful as 16 days passed and the winner had still not surfaced. >> i kept digging around my house and wondering if i had the ticket hidden around but misplaced. >> tran said he woke in the middle of the night remembering he had bought five tickets at the winning store in san jose. he finally turned in the winning ticket to the lottery office in san francisco. >> lucky he didn't throw it out. >> the owner said he doesn't

one name comes to mind when we talk about the natural beauty, john mure. >> at the intersection of highway 4 in martinez, it's a wonderful place in terms of ease of access. it is a terrible place, though, to grow a sequoia. it's too hot and too dry. it's why when keith came to work

here four years ago, he wasn't surprised to learn this giant sequoia, like most others in the region, wasn't doing so well. >> it's doing okay but it does have a disease and everybody knew it. >> but this was not just any other tree. it was planted by famed naturalist john mure in the 1880s. in this 1885 photograph, you see the tree protected by a wooden cage planted in a prominent spot on the property for all to see. >> he planted it at the intersection of two farm roads. >> keith realized the only way to save this tree is to clone it. but that's entirely difficult. there may be only one person in the world that could do it.

good thing, though, dave millarh agreed to try. he told us via skype he'd jump at the chance to try on a tree that mure himself had planted. >> john mure walked thousands of miles and planted trees. >> so much like he does with other park trees, keith climbed the sequoia with a saw and a plan of pruning shears. except in cutting away the dead parts, he sought out the newest growth, clipped it and sent it overnight to michigan. there it was treated not just with tlc but with hormones to

country, the warmest temperatures in the country now in california. fog around palo alto this morning and around oakland, temperatures now mainly 30s and 40s, 33 in napa and about 41 in oakland, 47 in san francisco. you see san jose at 41 degrees. patchy fog the main concern. on the coast some low clouds for now. as winds turn offshore, we'll see clear skies and warming temperatures close to 70 in santa cruz, highs in the mid to upper 40s, yosemite 55 degrees. some places around the bay area could get close to 70 degrees. we'll show you that in the full forecast coming up soon. >> a 7-year-old kidnapped at his

we have the sunshine on the upper half of the transamerica building. you also see that layer of smoke out there and cool aer air trapd below. once again today we have another spare the air day with the highest smoke pollution problems in the south bay around san jose. chilly companies in the north bay, temperatures in the low 30s. the wind not strong enough to mix that smoke and it away from the bay area. not much wind right now but i think by 3:00 and 4:00 today you're going to see the north winds picking up 10 to 20 miles per hour. we could see gusts in the hills approaching 35 miles per hour by this evening. still cold in the north bay, light wind, patchy fog. you see oakland 41 degrees, 47 in san francisco and 41 in san jose. the fog still a little bit of an issue, especially if you're

traveling down the coast. you can see some patches of fog getting into the north bay up towards santa rosa. skies will clear as we're seeing in san jose and down toward santa cruz. highs getting very close to 70 fr degrees today and tomorrow. patterns on a rorl coaster ride, the arctic vortex of polar air dropping down east of the rockies. this is a pattern that's been locked in place. unfortunately in terms of rainfall, doesn't look like we're going to see it. the jet stream marching off to the north, so any chances of showers staying up around seattle and portland. by the time these systems get into the bay area, not seeing a whole lot coming our way. mild temperatures are going to continue as we go through the

weekend. morgan hill getting close to 70 a little bit later on today and you see san francisco looking pretty good, mid 60s for today and into the north bay getting close to 70 around sonoma and santa rosa this afternoon, mid 60s for sauce -- sausilito. in green by, you're at minus 10 by the fourth quarter. factor in the wind speed, not so good. wind speeds factored into temperature looks like minus 20. sam, back to you. >> did i hear you correctly? a delta of 80 degrees.

three pilots and we have to qualify with three sleds. >> this san jose native didn't make the initial cut of the u.s. bob sled team but continues to train with them in case she gets a last-minute callup. >> right now there's amazing talent on this team. >> both of her parents died within six months of each other, just months after she graduated from high school. >> it's the hardest experience i've ever had in my life. to start college, a whole new thing, without my parents. i had to find the strength like within myself. >> she uses her parents as inspiration to keep pushing herself, even on the most difficult days. one man has been a steady source of strength for both athletes.

you're watching "today in the bay." this morning as we do every saturday morning, special guests joining us from pets in need. lisa simmons joins us with bryce. what kind of dog is bryce. >> as she's gotten a little bit old older, the hound dog she has the most mix of is the dachshund. her brother didn't look quite as dachsy as she does. she'll be about 30, 35 pounds. she's only about three months old. >> how much does she weigh now? >> right now she's at about 14

pounds. >> so roughly 40 pounds -- >> probably 30, 35. she'll be a nice kind of medium-sized dog. >> what kind of demeanor and what kind of family would be ideal for a dachshund mix? >> well, dachshunds, including hounds are great with people, they're great kid dogs, she was great with other dogs in the shelter and met a cat or two and did fine. >> so it easy interaction with other dogs? >> exactly. she's a little shy right now. >> all things considered, she seems pretty comfortable in the
