children's hospital oakland. christie, where did the family take her? >> reporter: good morning to you, terry. that's the question everyone wants answered but i can tell you that jahi mcmath was quietly moved from children's hospital around 8:00 last night, it took more than three weeks after she was first declared brain dead at this same hospital. the family attorney says arrangements came together at the last minute. they have athletes of violence, even death threats. they released video as the ambulance left children's hospital. we are told that the mom went along in the ambulance. jahi was declared brain dead on december 12, three days after she had her tonsils removed. the family rejected this, saying that they believe jahi is alive as they fought in court to keep her on a ventilator at the hospital. the family attorney had this to say. >> this family knows that the

odds are way stacked against them. this family knows that the likelihood of recovery short of almost a miracle or just the spirit of this family and this girl, is improbable. what this family wanted was a chance. and i think that what's real important to understand is what this legal action was really about, about this girl named jahi but also about every parent in the united states who should have the right to make that choice. >> reporter: about a half hour after she was released the hospital released a statement saying in part our hearts go out to the family as they grieve for this sad situation and we wish them closure and peace. requests for a feeding tube was denied. both sides were actually due in court, to federal court tomorrow. a hospital spokesperson saying that may not be necessary due to the transfer that has happened and jahi's uncle says the

transfer was paid for by online donations that totaled about $47,000. christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thanks very much. it is called a polar vortex, a whirl pool of frigid dense air across a good portion of the united states. people in 25 states waking up to below zero temperatures. the mayor of indianapolis ordering people to stay indoors unless there is an absolute emergency. in minnesota public cools are closed for the first time in nearly two decades. other parts of the country black ice is causing trouble. at jfk a plane skidded off the runway. thousands of flights are canceled across the country and that is impacting travelers here in the bay area. peggy bunker live at sfo where flyers arrive to find they may have a long wait ahead. >> reporter: you said it. good morning to you. a lot of people perhaps this is the first monday back to work or perhaps ending a hong extended

vacation. and if those folks are coming to san francisco international airport looking to fly to the midwest or back east, they are facing delays or cancellations. 32 cancellations are reported here at sfo, the main airports affected if you have a flight scheduled today, that would be chicago, boston, new york city, and when we say new york, that is specifically jfk. all of what is called a polar vortex. it's a counterclockwise rotating pool of freezing air that has come down from canada and it's causing all of these headaches. yesterday, sunday, about 3,000 flights were canceled. you can imagine the domino effect. one woman wanted to get home. >> i got an e-mail saying my flight would be canceled for tomorrow morning, then i tried to call but i guess there was high call volume and i couldn't get through. >> reporter: that's tough because that's what we tell

folks, check win your airline, call, the wait times on the phones, was about 15 minutes so hang in and find out. do that this morning if you are flying to those three airports. boston, chicago or jfk and see what the status is of your flight. back to you. >> thanks very much. >> i want to check in with meteorologist christina loren. she joins us with a look at the forecast right now. >> hey, good morning to you. great looking day shaping up. temperatures mostly in the 40s to start. i want to show you right now where we're headed. really puts things in perspective. we are now well into winter. it is january and temperatures today are going to feel like a spling like afternoon. on the way to the east bay, 66 degrees for you. and maybe you had to work last week and working this week. the biggest difference is we do not have to spare the air. we had to do that last week.

throughout the day, mild temperatures, the clouds increase. same for tomorrow. as we get into the midsection of the week mostly wednesday and thursday we have a slight chance for showers. that's what we're targeting. i'm going to put this in motion. show your future cast in a moment. first your drive. here is mike. >> good morning. happy new year to some who haven't joined us since. palo alto, traffic very light but we expect it to return as schools and businesses come back on line. the map shows you this area for 101. the overnight road crews cleared from the area without slowing. 280 northbound past page mill road, an incident sounds like this may have been a deer hit. somebody there, crews are 2ing to take a look. no slowing but we might have to have a traffic break.

million to six american universities, stanford will use the money to look at a small set of deadly cancer cells that often lead to a relapse. the fund committed $150 million to stanford's cancer research. >> people panicked about paying their first month's health insurance premium are getting a couple of extra days. today was the deadline. covered california announced until january 15 to pay. 11 health insurance companies involved agreed to the extension. payments must be in the hands of the insurance companies by that date, not simply postmarked or in transit. it's got to be in. >> congress back to work after the holiday break and scott mcgrew, one of their first orders of business will be to approve a new head of the federal reserve. >> which will be the bay area's janet yellen. good morning. the senate almost certainly will vote on dr. yellen today and will almost certainly approve

her as well. yellen of course a former business professor at the school of business at cal berkeley. she is currently second in command at the fed behind ben bernanke. we're looking to the jobs number this week for a look at the markets ahead of the bell let's turn to courtney reagan live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning. >> good morning. futures are lower as the markets come off after down week, the first negative start to a new year since 2008. however, volume was low last week, many traders still out on vacation so we'll see what happens. the big focus this week will be that u.s. jobs report on friday morning. it's a key gauge of momentum that we've seen show up in reports on manufacturing and consumer spending. we'll get data on services sector and factory orders. on friday the dow was up to 16,470, the nasdaq slipped 11 to 4132, so that's our starting point today. back to you.

temperature this morning mostly in the 40s, we're glad you're here with us this morning. you might be taking the id kids back to school. count on heavier traffic. san francisco looking nice and clear this morning at 46 degrees, no fog to report. just keep in mind it's going to start to get more on the breezy side throughout the second half of the day. and that could impact your drive and high-profile vehicle. we're looking good, taking it to the futurecast, mostly clear start. you can see between 1:00 and 3:00 turning mostly cloudy for the greater bay area. the clouds increasing is a sign of the jet stream dipping to the south. it will continue to do so as we head through the next few days which is good news for our air quality. this will be the warmest day of the week. in the south bay approaching 69 degrees in morgan hill. along the peninsula and in san francisco you'll notice more cloud cover there. mostly cloudy today, not a lot of sunshine for you. temperatures in the mid to upper 60s. still staying 5 to 10 degrees

above average. the east bay and the tri-valley also going to hit the mid to upper 60s for today. all right. let's talk about that soupy pattern i've been telling you about. weak nbc moves through, our first chance for showers on wednesday. this is a few days south the chance could get impressive. we're going to keep watching that. it's not that great but will provide snowfall for tahoe. and temperatures you can see the bottom of the screen they will be dropping. so yeah, you'll be able to use the fireplace. not last week. mike is back, let's check that drive. good morning to you. >> good morning. clear the maps so far so you can get a look at the map for the bay area which is moving smoothly right now. traffic flows well. we're going to check the south bay. southbound 101 shows spotty slowing which would mean speeds are coming down. they are around 59 miles per hour. that's unusual for a commute

through the area and the volume on traffic camera shows a light flow so far. here we do see that slowing, look at that westbound 580 showing slowing into livermore. it's starting to jam up so that's pretty good as far as the volume of traffic a. good indicate they're the tri-valley starting to see more traffic. indicating eastbound on 580, typical about this time, but we do notice. we're also looking here toward highway 4. we see a gentle slowdown, expected more but we'll see over the next 15 minutes. we see speeds below 30 miles per hour. we'll see how that is affecting the rest of the east bay. again we expect as schools come back on line and folks return to business we'll see more traffic here as well as toward the toll plaza. oakland, north away from us with the taillights and easy flow of traffic so far but we'll see the

volume pick up over the next 40 minutes through oakland. looking at the north bay t southbound side we're starting to see a steady stream of headlights. a smooth drive, at the limit all the way past that richmond/san rafael bridge. watch for this to kick in. >> thank you. new details now on the health of former israeli prime minister ariel sharon, he is reportedly the way they describe it, critical condition with immediate danger to his life. he has been in a coma since suffering a stroke in 2006 but recently his condition deteriorated. doctors say while his charlotte stable his other organs are deteriorating. >> liz cheney dropped her bid to become wyoming's senator. she dropped out of the senate primary. she says serious health issues in her family forced her to stop her campaign. she was trying to unseat mike enzi but faced opposition from

her own party and her family after she voiced opposition to same-sex marriage. her sister who married her long time girlfriend publicly chastised cheney for the comment. >> apparently sexting starts as early as middle school for some. a new study in the journal of pediatrics finds one in five seventh graders sent a sexual picture or text message. researchers also found four out of seven teens that sectioned were more likely to involve in making out or having a friend with benefits. they also found girls were more likely to send photos than boys. more girls than boys. experts say the study proves it's important to talk to your kids about sex early and often. >> wow. that's amazing. 5:18 now. coming up, consumer electronics show kicks off tomorrow. we'll get a peek at some of the gadgets expected to make a splash.

a deadly stabbing near a busy intersection in san francisco. it happened just after 3:00 this morning near the intersection of market street and octavia boulevard. bob redell joins us live at the scene this morning. what are police telling you, bob? >> reporter: not much right now. good morning to you. this took place around 3:20 so about two hours ago. it's in an apartment building. we're on market between octavia and valencia. no word how many big the presence is. there's at least a dozen squad cars, detectives, inspectors inside. we did speak with a sergeant. he confirms that the person who was stabbed is or was a man, and the suspect is possibly still inside the building. he wouldn't go into further detail but they do have a lot of officers out here, they have entrances guarded. that suspect on the loose with a

knife or is this somebody who they are interviewing he would not elaborate. one person is stabbed, again around 3:20 this morning. p.d. will not tell us what led up to the stabbing. just that person is dead in this apartment building here on market between octavia and valencia. reporting live in san francisco, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. >> congress heads back to work today and the senate could vote on extending benefits for the long term unemployed. more than a million americans lost their benefits after the program was removed as part of the budget compromise with the house. the the emergency benefits were created in response to the recession five years ago and helped more than a million americans with an average of $300 a week. >> denying that is plain cruel. >> this is the difference between hardship and catastrophe. >> i'm opposed to having it without paying for it. >> there has to be some compromise from the democrats. >> restoring the benefits comes

good volume of traffic. look at this shot of the span westbound with the taillights away from us. around that beautiful tower a. smooth flow after the road crews cleared from their work. a lot getting into san francisco. we expect the metering lights. pretty true to form for a monday. here in the palo alto area, 101 moves smoothly northbound with the taillights past willow up through san mateo into san francisco without delay, the southbound side a similar situation so no problems for the peninsula, 101 or 280. back to you. >> thanks so much. six-month-old panda made her debut. she sleeps about 20 hours a day but was caught on camera during play time. long lines at the zoo to see the new addition. as many as 19,000 people can visit her every day. so that's a great thing to get her walking around and awake. 20 hours sleeping.

good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm terry mcsweeney. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. we start with breaking news, san francisco police on the scene after a deadly stabbing on market street. happened about a mile away from the financial district near the highway 101 off ramp. we're going to have a live report with bob redell who is at the scene gathering information right now. >> the girl who has been on a ventilator since complications from a tonsillectomy has been moved from children's hospital oakland after weeks. >> christie smith live in

oakland this morning. the family, have they said where they took jahi? >> reporter: no, they haven't. but earlier in court documents a facility in new york was named as a possibility as a place where jahi could go. but at this point the family hasn't revealed where she was taken when she left children's hospital last night around 8:00. they say they have received threats of violence even death threats, so they won't be giving much more information on that. we can tell that you the family did release a video of the ambulance as it left children's hospital last night and we're told that the 13-year-old's mom went along in the ambulance with jahi mcmath. the attorney says that the arrangements came together at the very last minute and within 12 hours she should be situated and have her needs met. the move comes more than three weeks after jahi mcmath was declared brain dead, her family said that she went into cardiac

arrest after having her tonsils and other tissue removed. the family believed all along they said that she was alive and they fought in court to force children's hospital to keep her on a ventilator at least until she could be moved. >> we're very grateful, very proud, we want to thank everyone that supported us, everyone that is in our corner, everyone that prayed for us, everyone that helped donate to make this possible. without you guys none of this would be possible. >> jahi mcmath has been taken from children's hospital and brought to a place where they will use her name instead of calling her a body, and where she can get to the starting line instead of where children's has left her for the past four weeks almost, at the finish line. >> reporter: we understand she was still on a ventilator and in a statement after she was taken away from the hospital, they said in part, our hearts go out to the family as they grieve for this sad situation and we wish them closure and peace.

jahi's uncle says the transfer was paid for with online donations that totaled at least $47,000. christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thanks so much. as she mentioned a new york facility that treats people with traumatic brain injuries has said it is willing to take over jahi mcmath's care. catherine craig is outside the center in long island with the details. >> reporter: days ago the family of jahi mcmath named this care facility, it's called new beginnings, as one of the places where the teenager could go. this care center is described as an outpatient rehabilitation center, the founder told nbc she had been in touch with jahi's family and wants to care for the child. it's in medford on long island about 60 miles or so east of new york city. an uncle says the family doesn't want to is close where the girl is going until she is resettled,

also for safety reasons, the founder of new beginnings says the care facility is all about life and it's what workers believe in from the founder to one of the vice presidents, they speak first-hand experience having to deal with a family member who suffered a traumatic brain injury. that's the latest from medford on long island. >> 5:32. two suspected gang members charged in the murder of an 8-year-old girl from east oakland will be in court. prosecutors say 22-year-old darnell williams of oakland went to the wrapt elesha was having a slumber party, rang the bell, then opened fire. the the 8-year-old was killed, three hurt including a 7-year-old, 4-year-old and a 63-year-old. williams along with joseph carroll planned the attacks as retaliation for the killing of their friend. williams could face the death penalty if convicted. >> one of san jose state students accused of taking part in hate crimes is expected to be

arraigned. prosecutors say that logan beshler was one of four who tack part in barricading a black roommate and clamping a bike lock around his neck. he reported hi said it was part after satire and it was part after prank war. san jose state has hired ay retired judge to lead a task force to review the facts and make recommendations. >> to the freezing weather gripping half of the country. the so-called polar vortex is stretching across 25 states and the poor weather is leading to thousands of 3450i9 cancellations. peggy bunker live at sfo where flyers arrive to find they may have a long wait ahead. >> reporter: good morning to you, terry. we're seeing a lot of exhausted travelers, some sleeping here at sfo, a couple just getting off a flight delayed as well. it's been a very, very tough go if you are flying, specifically back east if you are coming to the airport today and flying to

the midwest or back east you could face delays or cancellations. here is what happened over the weekend because of this polar vortex. incredible cold weather coming down from canada, it's created this perfect storm where flights have not been able to take off. 3,000 flights were canceled on sunday according to flight aware.com. that creates such a domino effect of folks trying to get to where they need to go. we checked in with one person struggling to get on a flight. >> used to travel a lot with the military. this is ridiculous. so my feet are sore, everybody else is upset and i feel bad for these guys. because they don't know what they are in for. >> reporter: so let's get you up to speed on what we hear from the people at san francisco international. if you want to look at some of these boards, 32 cancellations at sfo, 19 of those specifically

arrivals and departures to o'hare, midway, newark, jfk, also washington, d.c. those are your hot spots. it's boston is a problem. right now when we look at these we see a lot of on time departures including to some of these hubs. if we go to arrivals you see cancellations, flights that will not be showing up. that's going to cause the backups once they captain get planes here. so throughout day, 19 cancellations to those hubs. and all of this because of this polar vortex that is causing a lot of trouble for air travelers. >> peggy, thanks very much. let's check in with christina in front after map with a lot of blue on it. >> this gives you an indication of how widespread that brutally cold air mass s. and just to show you some of the temperatures wes are high temperatures. and the midwest, on the east coast and the deep kout we're talking fridge it conditions.

new orleans, 38 degrees. with the wind chill included negative 20 in minneapolis, negative 13 in lincoln. it's going to be a very cold day. today and tomorrow after that we'll see this cold air work its way back out of the area. so that's good, good news. especially for people trying to catch a flight. i don't think i'd want to arrive in the midwest with temperatures like that. so my light's cancel. i'm not complaining. peninsula right now at 41, 40 in the east bay. these are the highs today. comfortable, ending up in the 60s. throughout the next couple days some changes. first, today you'll notice those. we stop the clock on futurecast at 1:00 p.m. mostly sunny. look at what happens between 1:00 and 4:00, the clouds increase as the jet stream starts to take a dip to the south. this is going to change our pattern and look where your temperatures are. today a little cooler, touching on 69 degrees.

beautiful conditions. 65 for tomorrow, then look at this, wednesday into thursday temperatures are feeling very much like they should this time of year. 59 for pens, 61 by thursday. then we might get showers, in the north bay and the peninsula. stay tuned if you can. you got to get out the front door. mike is here to help you get to work on time. >> then i'll pay attention to christina as well because traffic and weather always affecting the drive. looking toward the east shore freeway, westbound 80 with headlights, you can make the silhouette of university avenue overcrossing. lanes filling up, not so bad that you have a lot of slowing. look at the maps. our travel speeds down the east shore freeway close to the limit. westbound over toward the san rafael side we're seeing a little slowing as the commute starts to build. here highway 4 does see more slowing than the last couple weeks, this is heading over to l

street. we're watching this build as well as your tri-valley drive west 580 slow into livermore. highway 84 has calmed down. there you go with the commute starting to build again. a look at fremont no major issues but south. >> we return to breaking news, san francisco police investigating a deadly stabbing about a mile down from market street from the city's financial district. bob joins us live at scene. what have you learned? >> good morning. we know this man was found dead in the lobby of the apartment building that is here on market between octavia and valencia. there are several sfpd police officers and inspectors here. the call came around 3:20.

the man was already dead. we did speak with a sergeant on the scene. it's a man who died and that their suspect is possibly still in the building. he was not giving us the impression there was necessarily a man hunt, a man or woman running around with a knife. the fact is the suspect is possibly in the building. if they tried to escape, give at any heavy police presence inside and outside of the entrances. again, around 3:20, a man stabbed to death, the body still lying there in the lobby of the apartment building, as far as the motive, sfpd has not found out what led up to this. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the latest. >> 5:39. possible help for millions of unemployed. what lawmakers are doing.

welcome back everyone. a good monday morning to you. with president obama back from vacation in hawaii the focus in washington today turns to unemployment and the millions of americans who lost their benefits. tracie potts live on capitol hill with more on the fight to extend unemployment. we should see some action on that this week? >> reporter: actually laura, you could see action today. there is a test vote that we expect is going to happen in the senate today. they need five republicans to sign on. one has agreed to sponsor this bill to extend these unemployment checks for at least another three months. that's the big push here. but some opponents, some

republicans say wait. how much is this going to cost? $6.3 billion is the estimate. and they don't want to borrow that from china. they want offsets. in other words, you cut something to pay for something and stay in the budget. so that's the debate that we're going to be hearing about. lots of people affected by this. already 1.3 million lost benefits. more if congress doesn't deal with this. administration argues 14 million americans could be affected. those losing the checks and those who rely on people with those checks. so in the senate it is certainly possible they might be able to get this through a. challenge with the republican-controlled house. the president says he will sign it but it's a temporary measure. extending -- extending unemployment benefits for three more months, that means congress would have to deal with it again in the spring. >> pushing it off for a while. thank you. new details about the deadly

plane crash in aspen, colorado. the privately owned aircraft crashed and burst into flames as it tried to land. the cause is unknown. the airport will remain closed this morning for the ntsb investigation. three people were on board, all pilots from mexico, one of them is dead, the other two were injured. two ships stuck in the ice near antarctica may soon be able to break free today. a russian expert on antarctic ice says the wind may change direction this morning. that may help the vessels move through it. the russian vessel became trapped on christmas eve t chinese vessel got stuck on thursday after rescuing the crew on the russian ship. the u.s. coast guard dispatched the polar star to help. the ice breaker left sydney, australia but is not expected to arrive for week. >> a turn around for dennis rodman, he is back in north korea. his plane landed this morning

mild temperatures in the mid-60s. in the north bay the upper 60s for santa rosa. mostly cloudy conditions by about 3:00 p.m. east bay and tri-valley looking good, temperatures ramping up into the mid-60s. so i want to point this out it's going to be nice today, then temperatures drop like a rock. the pattern changes. clouds are going to increase as the changes occur today. slight cooling tomorrow, more cloud cover and then as we head into wednesday and thursday, very slight chance for showers. we stop the clock for you into tuesday you can see starting to see a little bit of activity off the coast, then as we head through wednesday into thursday overnight we might get a stray shower or two. up in the north bay. that's the best bet. you can see a lot of this activity is going to fall apart before it makes its way into the bay area. nonetheless it will keep our air quality clean. we need that. we spared the air all year long. though it doesn't been a long year. >> we have a lot of spare the

chip. it seemed to work. some spotted the numbers 1, 9 and 2 in the design. that represents the company's new mobile chip which will be introduced in las vegas. >> you said mobile chip? a key word there, mobile. scott mcgrew, the only chip anyone wants. >> the only one. it caught this trend caught chip companies flat footed. the silicon valley was about making chips for traditional computers. all of a sudden you and i are on tablets and phones and nobody got caught more asleep at the switch than intele. though the company is working as quickly as it can to turn that around building chips that lose less power. the new ceo hopes to quadruple the amount to keep up with nvidia. wall street gets back to work. technically 2014 started last week and there was some trading but between the holidays and a

monster snowstorm today's really the first full trading of the year. the new year's celebration pushed the jobs number back. we'll get december jobs the end of this week and start hearing quarterly profit reports as well including twitter's first official report. a security company says this morning yahoo! front page has been serving malware to some. it seems to be limited to europe and to people using something other than windows so chances are you're not affected unless you are just in france with your mac book pro. the bigger picture is yahoo!'s continuing problems with technology. a couple weeks ago yahoo! mail couldn't access e-mail for several days. this continues to be sort of an embarrassment for yahoo!. they are working on it, they say they have it cleaned up. >> not good publicity there. >> i've got a yahoo! account. he's correct. >> did you have trouble? >> i did. >> i didn't. >> you didn't?
