>> a live look outside now. looking at san francisco. beautiful shot. no matter how many times you see it. >> i love it. one of my favorites. >> it is tuesday, january 7th, this is "today in the bay." good morning everyone. thanks for joining us. i'm terry mcsweeney. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. beautiful here but there is a blanket of cold air over most of the nation this morning. meteorologists say it's air from the north pole dipping into parts of the country that are usually much warmer even in the winter. peggy bunker joins us with more on the problems caused by all of this cold weather. >> are we getting off scott free or what. good morning. first up in this one-two punch of record weather was the snowstorm over 20 states. now today the second blow, bone chilling freezing temperatures that will grip the midwest and several eastern states. let's start with upstate new york. look what they are contending

with. you see the plows hard at work. people have been trying to shovel so they can get in and out of homes. the freezing temps that will roll in we'll look at new issues with ice. how about this blizzard here. can you imagine trying to pump gas in this condition. this also is upstate new york. cars trying to get around with near lly zero visibility. the pumps also frozen as people try to get gas. let's move over to the midwest. this is one person trying shovel his house. and highway 65 in indiana, that was a virtual parking lot. take a look at this traffic jam as people try to navigate. you can see the ice under the snow. a nightmare on the highway. back to the residential areas again t snow blower was a tough thing to have if you had snow. what about a house fire. these firefighters trying to put

out this blaze with frozen hoses. so pretty tough situation. a lot of people had to get off of a train that got stuck in chicago. this is an amtrak train loaded with passengers. the train froze to the tracks. they had to call in shuttle buses to get the passengers off of the frozen train, transport them back to the station. >> we're hearing from meteorologists this kind of weather unprecedented in the past 20 years. many schools and work places shut down in order to avoid the danger of having to go outside. you guys, boy, are we getting off lucky or what. >> i can't imagine living in some of those places. my gosh. >> thanks. and the freezing weather causing headaches for some jetblue passengers stuck at sfo waiting for a flight out of town. christie smith is going to join us live with an update on those flight delays in a few minutes. >> in the meantime, let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. she's going to be along as well with a local forecast.

we'll do that in a few minutes. to find out more about the deep freeze affecting a good portion of the u.s. and how it's hurting travelers here in the bay area, in other news this morning at 5:03, today we can hear the evidence against the two men accused of beating giants fan bryan stow outside of dodger stadium in 2011. the suspects marvin norwood and louis sanchez are due back in court. bob redell is live in san jose. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. bryan stow who used to patrol these streets as a paramedic is now home. he has been for some time on an extremely slow recovery from his attack at dodger stadium almost three years ago. an attack that left him brain damaged and permanently disabled. in a few hours the two men accused of beating him will be before a judge in a los angeles courtroom for what will be a preliminary hearing in their

trial. this means that for the first time we will hear about the evidence that the prosecution plans to present against louis sanchez and marvin norwood, the two dodgers fan who is are charged with felony assault and mayhem in their alleged attack against stow who was attending that ball game on opening day in 2011 as a giants fan. both men have pled not guilty to their charges. those court appearances are scheduled for later this morning, one at 8:00, the other at 8:30. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> police are asking for help solving a seven-year-old murder. alberto was killed seven years ago today. before 2:30 in the morning as he drove. he had been confronted hours earlier by two suspects at a club that has since been shut down. investigators got pretty good descriptions, you see them there. look at these sketches. these pictures are about seven

years old. investigators say both men have dark complexions, between 18 and 25 at the time of the shooting. they are offering a $250,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the murder. >> it's 5:05. the family of jahi mcmath said the 13-year-old has wasted away because of delays at children's hospital oakland. her uncle gave us cell phone video. they have not said she is being moved to out of fear for her safety. the family said her condition is not good. and they say she has become frail because they say children's hospital would not treat her. but the hospital says her condition is deteriorating because she's deceased. >> if her heart stops beating then it stops beating while she's on the respirator we can accept that. she's done fighting and going home and we can accept that.

we can't accept them trying to pull the plug early. >> a death certificate was issued december 12th, the day the hospital declared her brain dead following complications from tonsil surgery. >> mentioned a moment ago the freezing weather causing headaches for jetblue passengers waiting for a flight out of town. christie smith is joining us with an update. >> reporter: good morning. it's easy to spot the jetblue passengers here in the international terminal, they are the ones staring at the board wondering. i spoke with two gentlemen who told me they have bun stuck since sunday. four departures and eight arrivals are canceled this morning from the east coast. travelers are waiting for the counters to open. jetblue canceled flights over the weekend because of the ice and the cold weather that peggy was talking about. new faa rules means that pilots

and crews must rest 17 hours they take to service the planes. monday it suspended at jfk, laguardia, newark and logan at boston, 300 flights, flights this morning we're told beginning to take off but i spoke with one man who has been trying to get home to colombia and he is having a rough go. >> they remove my flight two times. hopefully finally they can solve my problem. i hope so. if not i have problems in my work. >> reporter: he says he was due back to work yesterday so he says that he's staying with relatives in the bay area. another man said that jetblue put him up in a hotel while his flights were canceled. travelers can request a refund. we're told service should be picking up and be fully operational by noon. live at sfo, christie smith,

eyeing. too clock a.m. to 9:00 a.m. thursday morning. right in the heart of your morning drive. all of the activity will be light, isolated in nature. but i stop the clock at about midnight thursday. the showers moving into the north bay, to the south bat 3:00 a.m. on thursday morning, then in the south bay we might get something at 6:00 a.m. this is great news for our air quality and all of that is going to move to tahoe but you can see we're not expecting a lot. only in the highest peaks, maybe 3 to 6 inches. good morning to mike inouye. >> anything we can do to help that snowfall and rain totals good for the water levels. the rest of the bay and along the water a smooth drive 101 and 880. the commute starting to kick in. we showed you around tully, that crash, looks like everything is out of lane, still flashing lights. the tri-valley, we have a smooth drive over the altamont pass no. problems and a smooth flow

here as well as 84 a mild bill. a little slowing as more cars start to hit the roads. we're starting to see our normal patterns show up after a couple of weeks. a lot of folks taking vacation. no problem across the antioch bridge. and easy drive coming out of the north bay and westbound highway 4. a little slowing around hill crest over to el, a clear drive through concord, 680 off of the benicia bridge. a smooth flow as well no. problems on the east shore freeway, we'll give you a couple of live looks, the north bay, there is san rafael and easy flow of traffic. we're getting more company. down through san rafael and to the golden gate bridge. the bay bridge smooth off the berkeley curve. fast track a nice flow into the city and the crews have cleared.

back to you. >> thanks so much, mike. same-sex marriage is on hold in utah 17 days after they started. yesterday the u.s. supreme court ordered the marriages be put on hold until the court can rule on the state's ban on tame sex marriage a. judge ruled the ban violated the constitutional rights of same-sex couples. in the days that followed hundreds tied the knot in utah. utah officials are trying to determine if the marriages are valid. government research suggests a new pattern in the way we live. the research suggests the number of unmarried couples who decide to move in together after a pregnancy is higher than the number of so called shotgun marriages or people who only get married when a baby comes along to avoid family embarrassment. the research from the national center for health statistics. it found about 18% of single

women who become pregnant move in with their boyfriends. that compared to 5.3% who chose to have post-conception marriage. >> gas station attendant almost hit and then the pump igniting a fire. >> reporter: i'm in brooklyn where we have winds 41 miles per hour. all of the layers don't stand a chance much like the scaffolding here that fell down when we arrived. the mta here, the subway and buses put their own emergency plan in place trying to provide additional service to commuters that have to come out no matter was. they are going to be running extra special trains that keep us on the third rail.

a man swept out to sea by a wave survived after drifting four 60 hours off the coast of taiwan. the man was fishing when he was hit by a large wave. the 42-year-old said he was able to hang on to floating wood and managed to make it to the shore about two days later. rescuers found him on the beach, took him to a local hospital. he was dehydrated but otherwise

fine. >> an elderly man hit the gas instead of the brakes. that's what happens when that happens. this station in a small massachusetts town, security video showing he ran into an attendant and a pump a. fire erupted at that pum. the attendant was carried on the hood about 30 feet. the good news he only suffered bumps and bruises after that. took three fire extinguishers to put the fire out. the 83-year-old driver was not hurt and has not been charged with a crime. >> they are lucky it didn't explode. >> let's check the forecast now. >> the weather outside is frightening. not here in the bay area. i want to give you a little comparison where we are this morning. you walk out the front door if you think it's cold take a look at the rest of the nation. the true temperature in chicago, negative 10 degrees. they are at 4 degrees in new york city this morning. we're at a balmy 45. right here in san jose. 45 for observe land as well.

and 46 degrees to start the day in mountain view the. highs today are going to climb nicely. we're going to end up in the 60s all across the bay area, a good looking day shaping up. 67 for the east bay. san francisco at 60 and 65 in the north bay today. so really, hard to complain when you see that map. >> definitely. if you do complain look back at the map. to the bottom of the screen we did find it looks like a stalled or disabled vehicle all the way on the shoulder on the right going westbound 80 past university avenue. that's what i see for the live shot. chp doesn't report that. a smoth drive for traffic through the area. you see the volume not bad. we're picking up traffic down the berkeley curve. golden gate bridge moves smoothly out of the north bay. north 101 does show slowing now up toward the millbrae off ramp. sounds like crews are still there helping a car stuck in

bringing the midwest and the east coast to a standstill, also affecting people here. christie smith is live where thousands of travelers are stuck waiting for flights. still waiting. >> reporter: good morning to you. we just checked the board and it's kind of a mixed bag this morning. we are seeing flights to places like new york listed as on time for the carrier jetblue, but i'm also speaking with some travelers who say look, i've been stranded here since sunday and they wonder if today is the day they will get home. the airport manager says that so far four departures and eight arrivals are canceled in and out of the east coast. some of the folks giving us a thumbs up saying yes, they finally got word that they are going home today. jetblue canceled flights over the weekend because of the bad weather on the east coast and midwest. but the new faa rules came into play and made things worse. the carriers suspended operations yesterday at kennedy,

laguardia, boston's logan airport. the rule means that pilots and crews will rest, planes are serviced and this can last 17 hours. one man says he is still waiting for the go ahead after more than one canceled flight. >> my first flight was sunday, and now i hope they can solve the problem to be on time in my work. my boss is not going to be very happy about that, you know. >> reporter: about 300 jetblue flights were canceled. we're told that service is picking up today, particularly by 7:00 a.m. with all flights expected to be resuming by at least noon today. reporting live at sfo, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thanks very much. delays are bad for travelers obviously, they are good news for local businesses. motels near sfo say they are enjoying extra guests. the managers say capacity

beat tune death in his church has ties to the bay area. reverend freed spent three years, 2002 to 2005, his body was found in the rectory at st. bernard's catholic church. police arrested jerry bullok but not revealed a motive. there waill be a mass at the chapel. father freed served as vicar at st. joseph church that will hold a mass for him on february 1. >> new this morning a close call for residents of an apartment building in san jose. a fire broke out there. investigators say about 1:00 this morning something leaning up against the building caught fire and burned part of the siding. crews were able to put it out before it spread but it was a smoky mess.

get to that. 49 for san francisco. the north bay at 37. we're at 45 degrees in the east bay. in the 60s today. i want to show you the temperature trend. this is for the entire area. 64, by wednesday 60. friday we're talking about 62 degrees. it's going to get cool, then we'll warm you back up. here's the deal. even as we warm back up we're talking about a 10% chance of rain. i'm going to show you the futurecast. stick around for that. if you can't, you got to get to work, where you could be slowed down. >> 10% this many fingers. that's as far as i can take you. interstate 80, we saw the stalled vehicle on the right that has cleared. did it look like another car pulled owe they're and then they got the car moving so.

also blizzard conditions in upstate new york, cars trying to get gas, they had zero visibility. look at this frozen gas pump. on to the midwest right now. we look at highway 65 in indiana, a parking lot there. you can see the ice under that packed snow. a lot of slick roads and low visibility. a traffic nightmare. the residential areas a blow blower was the tool to own. a snow drift piled up. impossible to bypass without blowing out the snow. in iowa there were frozen fire hoses. they struggled. this is the worst for last you could say. more than 500 amtrak passengers spent the night on three chicago bound trains, two originating from l.a. and here in the bay area. amtrak says this is what happened, the trains got stuck in the snow and froze to the

rails. they picked up the passengers to take them. boy, what a brutal night on three different trains. a tough situation for tracie potts who is also in a brutal situation outdoors in washington, d.c. you look like you are going to all right but you look cold. >> reporter: well, good, i'm glad i look cold because i am cold. absolutely tells the truth on that one. it was about 7 degree when's i got here this morning, it was 3 out in the suburbs where i came from. it's warmed up a bit, at last check it was about 14. i can tell you it dent feel much warmer. the wind has been warming. the winds 5, 10, 15 below zero, one of the areas reporting 20 below zero. interestingly t school systems are dealing with this differently. some of them have closed. some are opening later so kids didn't have to get the wisconsin

when it was so cold. some are open today. so a lot of dpofts dealing with this differently. but the cold has settled in across the nation including in the capital. >> tell us what it's like to be out there. you get out of it because it's dangerous to be out for an extended amount of time. >> reporter: it really s. when we have a chance we do that, we had about 30 or so live shots we scheduled to do. in between is sometimes only five minutes. we have electric blankets. we're wrapping up. i parked my car nearby and i was able to sit in there for three or four minutes or balk in the labby. but when you're out in this kald makes a difference. >> thank you for bringing us the latest. tracie potts from washington, d.c. boy, you can see she's really taking one for the team i guess

francisco is at 49 and we are tracking a return of the low clouds and the tag. that's going to help keep our temperatures down. low clouds start to settle in. right now pretty good in terms of visibility. all the way from the north day. we're watching thick pockets through the east bay, also the south bay. it should be turning off between 10:00 a.m. and lunch time. warmer in the south bay than what we expect along the peninsula and in san francisco. in the south by in the 60s. 65 for morgan hill. the peninsula in san francisco cooler day but not as cold as where we're headed. remember, you can do it any time throughout my weather broadcast right there at the bottom of your screen. we're talking about the low 60s for today. in san, the north bay will reach the mid-60s.

>> thanks very much. elections officials say more than half of the signatures gathered in attempt to over turn the styrofoam ban were fake. restaurant owners turned in 39,000 signatures. after complaints during the signature collection, officials checked every signature and found only 18,000 were git. that is 3,000 short of the number needed. nearly 15,000 signatures appeared made up and some were gibberish. another 1,000 signed on twice. >> we are 30 days from the start of the sochi olympics. lindsey vonn will not compete. she made the announcement minutes ago. a brutal crash in february sidelined vonn and another, made
