country. the polar vortex started in the midwest threatens the east coast and as far south as florida. >> we'll check in with christina loren and peggy bunker. let's start with christie smith who joins us live at sfo. cold weather prompting jetblue to put many flights on hold. >> reporter: that's right. good morning. so far at least 12 flights canceled in and out of sfo headed to the east coast. i have to tell you it's a mixed bag. you check the board and you see that flights to new york are listed on time, leaving at 8:00 this morning. it's been frustrating for travelers who say they haven't been delayed by hours but we're talking about days. some trying to get home since sunday out of san francisco. not jis back east but we're talking about international travelers who have to fly through some of the affected places, folks going back to colombia telling us they love

san francisco but they'd like to get home. for jetblue passengers it's rough. yesterday operations suspensioned at jfk, boston logan airport, jetblue concentrated in the area with the ice cold temperatures. the faa rules mean more rest for the crews and pilots, 17 hours basically, a lot of time there to service the planes. today flights seem to be picking up a little here but i spoke with one man trying to get home to boston. he tells me his first delay was not weather related. the plane broke down in oakland but then the weather came. >> i supposed to go on friday but actually the flight was broken down in oakland so they don't have flight for me until today. so i have to stay here friday, saturday, sunday to monday. tuesday now. >> reporter: he tells us he is staying with friends. others tell us that jetblue has put them up in hotels while they

wait. you can tell the people who get out because they give you the thumbs up as they pass by excited about that. in all about 300 jetblue flights were canceled. service picking up today. we're told by about 7:00 a.m. with all flights expected to resume by noon. reporting live, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> that's a tough go. thanks, christie. people are used to the cold weather in the midwest and the east coast but many of the temperatures that we're seeing really breaking records. >> peggy bunker joins us live in the studio with new details about the cold. >> unprecedented temperatures. you know, there are many horror stories but this has to be one of the worst. an amtrak train that originated here, 217 passengers got stuck after snow and ice froze the tracks. this happened to three chicago-bound trains yesterday totaling 500 passengers that spent last night on a frozen train. freezing temperatures continue

to grip the midwest and several eastern states. let's take a look, this is outside the union train station in chicago, one of those frozen trains that got stuck to the tracks. people on board the train. they stayed up and ate. amtrak tried to make the best of it. that's what it looks like for their last night. you can see plows hard at work, new york state, upstate new york contending with lots of snow there. here is a freezing gas station. try pumping gas in this situation. you see blizzard snow whipping around. cars trying to get around with nearly zero percent visibility in this. again this is upstate new york. as we look at situations outside some of the highways there. this is indiana highway 65. what a situation there. cars crawling along on top of that ice and snow. slick roads, low visibility, a nightmare for everybody on the highway. up to the residential

neighborhoods t snow blowers. if you don't have a plow like this you want add snow blower so you could get out of your house. sidewalks there piled up with snow. you can see there the roads impossible to bypass without moving that snow around. we also talked a little about in iowa firefighters trying to get rid of a fire there and their hoses were frozen. so a terrible situation. here it's tough to complain. we have this beautiful weather. we talked to tracie potts in washington, d.c. where it wasn't snowing but the wind there was keeping her so very cold. >> peggy, thanks very much. cold seeing those pictures. >> and we're in a warm studio. you can see how cold the air is. this is from columbus, ohio. this is a water main break that flooded several streets downtown. initially there were concerns about the water turning to ice. crews replaced the broken pipe at about 3:00 this morning. getting things under way.

what they could. a lot of water there. >> imagine if it had somehow stopped, spilled and frozen there. >> and you know, firefighters even, if a fire breaks out they have a tough time with a lot of hoses and pipes because things are freezing. it's a tough go. >> let's check in with christina loren. she's got a lot of blue behind her again. >> the big effort is taking place in this region to try to protect people who are homeless out on the streets. i have noticed that. it's nice to see all of the communities come together when we experience something like this. it is brutal cold. negative 10 in chicago, negative 11 in detroit, and even up in canada we're talking about the coldest air in over 20 years. so here's the deal. tomorrow shouldn't be as bad. we should see more flights taking off. that will continue to trend warmer as we head into the weekend. but this morning, trying to get to chicago will be problematic. new york city and boston as well. remember to check ahead before

you even leave for the airport with conditions like this. we'll keep you updated here on nbc bay area. if you want to take a look at the weekend, your seven-day forecast here at the bottom of the screen, temperature this is morning not too bad. a blanket of low clouds. you'll notice that difference when you walk out your door. even patchy fog, mostly in the south bay. not that bad. it's not worth me showing you the visibility because they are above three miles. we're headed from the 40s into the 60s today. so a comfortable day headed our way. 65 in the north bay, san francisco at about 60 degrees with an area of low pressure offshore. this is what is ushering the onshore flow bringing in the clouds and the cooler air as the jet stream continues to dip to the south, we're talking about a shower chance, looking more impressive. for today, though, i want to point this out. above average for one last day. temperatures swinging about 25 degrees in the heat of the day. we're at 45 degrees in san jose, 64 degrees later on today and

yeah, temperatures are going to drop through tomorrow. your full forecast moments away. let's check your drive. it's stacking up. >> starting to stack up in spots. it's not the full return to the commute, we'll see that build the next couple weeks but we're looking back toward the bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights on at 6:00. so that's earlier than we've seen. the fast track lanes off to the right for cash payers backed up. the ones off to the left are slower to build. we'll give you a look as far as the maps go. no real slowing but a dip for richmond. at the berkeley curve you approach the bay bridge. a stall reported at 8 where it merges but no lanes blocked. northbound 880 before you get toward that san mateo bridge at industrial mark, a car, sounds like a crash and maybe a car in

the center divide. slowing shows northbound. the southbound side for the commute out of hayward into union city. down into the south bay northbound 101 looks like this. volume pretty good. we'll show you the spots where we see the south bay coming up. >> we'll check back. thank you. it's 6:09. the two men accused of beating paramedic bryan stow outside of dodgers stadium are due back in koufrmt marvin norwood and louis sanchez will hear the evidence against them. good morning. >> reporter: correct, good morning to you. bryan stow who used to patrol these streets here as a paramedic for the amr ambulance company is back at home, he has been there for several months now recovering from this brutal attack at dodger stadium that took place almost three years

ago, an attack that left him permanently disabled. in a few hours the two men accused will be before a judge in los angeles court for what will abpreliminary hearing in the trial. this means for the first time we'll hear about the evidence the prosecution plans to present against louis sanchez and marvin norwood the two fans charged in their alleged attack against stow who was attending that game which happened to be opening day. he was attending as a giants fan. both men pled not guilty. their appearances 8:00 and 8:30. reporting live. >> 6:10. still ahead on "today in the bay," penn state pension fight. why jerry sandusky says she entitled to nearly 4,000 bucks a month despite his convictions. >> we'll have all kinds of things from ces including a ceo kicked out of a party. >> back to school for a british royal.

about 200 miles from their destination. two additional trains were also stuck but buses took the passengers the rest of the way to chicago this morning. >> convicted child molester jerry sandusky wants his pension back. the former penn state assistant football coach will appear via video at a pension hearing. he lost his pension when he was convicted. he says he was retired when the crimes occurred. >> lindsey vonn says she will not compete in the winter games in sochi. an mri showed a knee ligament sprain, that with her torn acl made it impossible for her to stabilize her knee and ski safely. >> it was one of the most bizarre scenes. occurred yesterday afternoon at the kre s conference. >> there was a problem with the teleprompter. >> bay says that he read the wrong part of the teleprompter, the part of the script where someone else was supposed to read, then he lot lost in the

degrees today. and you know, i want to show you the microclimates, a taste of our final day of above average weather. how that works out in the south bay, mid-60s, mix of sun and clouds along the peninsula and san francisco, low clouds to kick off the day. and then a lot of sunshine to finish off. maybe high thin clouds by the day's end. that's about it. the north bay looks good, in the mid-60s t east bay on the cool side, plenty of clouds in oakland, 63 there. out in the tri-valley you're going to hit about 65 degrees. comfortable conditions in livermore and pleasanton with high clouds moving through. overall 2 to 5 degrees cooler than where we ended up yesterday. by tomorrow winter weather really returns, you'll need to break out the jacket, maybe even the scarf and the boots. it's going to get cold back to the 50s. thursday morning, we get our best rain chance between 2 and 9 a.m. we stop the clock for you. thursday morning we get our best bet. right at about 3:00 a.m.,

showers starting to push in, they will spread to the south over the morning drive so keep that in mind. overall look at this. our temperatures are going to climb right back up after that system moves through. 62 degrees in fremont as of friday, then as we head throughout the next couple days temperatures climb even more so, and we're still talking about showers on the radar. just to our north look at this next futurecast. saturday at 10:30 a.m. the storm to the north. a 10% chance for showers and highs in the mid-60s as we head throughout the weekend. major changes, and more to come. we'll take you through that. let's check your drive. say lowell to mike inouye. a little fog out there. >> it is. but not a big problem. that's the good news. we'll track it along with you. the rest of the bay, the peninsula moves, 101, 280 not a problem over across the san mateo and the dumbarton bridges, that's an easy drive. the south bay mostly green but a little bit of slowing north 101, 680 up to 880, and also from 85

past 87 we see slowing. now back to a similar pattern on a tuesday. but a lighter flow kicking in. this will kick in about a half hour for the south bay as we'll see more folks heading north. slowing southbound at 680 down to sheridan, a crash there. sounds like there may be as many as five vehicles originally involved. no major injuries but cars on the shoulder. may be two or three remain along with chp. there is the slowing out of sunol. more slowing because of the volume off of the dublin interchange and 680. a smooth drive for 84, clustering around as is typical. 580 moves toward the castro valley y. we have a smooth drive through oakland and northbound 880. down the east shore freeway, a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. the fast track and cash to the

right are backed up off the berkeley curve. the nrt bay, volume builds, no major issues, slowing down through nova due. we're going to see reports around for the next week or is as folks clear out the living rooms, i'll let you know as chp reports them as well. >> a lot of those on the roads these days. >> put them without recycling. >> cut them. >> they pick them up. you don't need drop them on the freeway. prince william returns to life as a student. >> he visited cambridge university where he will take a 10-week agricultural management course. it will involve lecture, seminars and meetings and essays and field trips. he will learn about issues facing rural communities and the farming industry in the uk, last year prince william completed his duties with the air force after a three-year tour as a search and rescue helicopter pilot. >> the time is 6:20.

6:24. we're looking out over san francisco and you see the bay bridge. we have some great temperatures we're talking about temperatures and how cold it is but not here in the bay area. though it's going to be cooling off a bit. nationwide a deep freeze is pushing all over the place. a look at some of the cities braving the chill. >> reporter: i'm jesse gary in philadelphia. few people are braving either the chill or the rocky steps behind me. the current air temperature 5 degrees but that's exacerbated by gusty winds, pushing the wind chill down to minus 17. the city instituted a code blue, the less fortunate, homeless, not allowed to sleep on the streets, they have been taken to shelters. there is a warming trend on the horizon, though, the temperatures rising to the upper

20s tomorrow. jesse gary, nbc news, philadelphia. >> reporter: i'm tracy stray hand in brooklyn. we have wind gusts 42 miles per hour. all of the layers people put in don't stand a chance much like the scaffolding here that fell down when we arrived. the mta which runs the subways and the buses has put their own winter weather emergency plan in place trying to provide additional services to commuters that have to come out no matter what just to get to work. they are going to be running extra special trains that keep a close eye on the third rail that can ice up and they are ready to suspend service if need be. mayor de blasio advised people to stay inside if possible but give at any fact this is new york city that is nearly impossible for so many people who will be out here facing

these very chilly temperatures. at last check the wind chill feel likes minus 10. now back to you. >> goodness. how cold is it in new york city? put it this way. this ice bar in midtown, manhattan warmer inside than it is outside. the bar is made of ice, the seats are made of ice, even the cocktail glasses are ice. the temperature inside the ice bar 23 degrees, outside on the streets of new york feels like negative 15 with all of the wind chill. >> an ice bar and warm up. >> can you believe it. >> let's check in with christina loren and see what's going on. >> you know i was checking in with alaska. they are at 20 degrees so it's warmer in alaska this morning than much of the united states. look at all of these cities reporting negative temperatures, negative 10 in chicago, negative 11 in detroit.

atlanta are bracing for a major temperature dip. >> not too cold to ring the opening bell. skate with the greats there on the nyse, in the meantime, the nasdaq, there is the bell, on this tuesday, january 7. this is "today in the bay." >> good tuesday morning. i'm terry mcsweeney. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. this morning we're watching the weather and that deep freeze settling over most of the country. the deep freeze stops three amtrak trains, 80 miles west of chicago, trapping more than 500 passengers on board overnight. the tracks were closed due to the snow, blowing across the tracks. passengers reportedly still had food and heat. >> look at buffalo, new york under a blizzard morning. think that happens a lot there.

it's the first time since 1993 they had a blizzard warning. winds gust up to 60 miles per hour that means white-out conditions, almost zero visibility. portions of the new york state thruway are closed. >> it's cold to look at the pictures. temperatures taking a dive in our nation's capital. >> tracie potts out in the elements on the streets of washington, d.c. how many layers do people have to wear? how many are you wearing? >> reporter: one for every hour we've been out here minus one. so we're trying to stay warm here. it was in the low, very low single digits when we got out here this morning. it's warmed up a bit. we're probably in the low teens, this is nothing like what they are experiencing in the midwest. it's actually warmer in minneapolis this morning, 33 below zero with the wind chill. minnesota's got some of the coldest temperatures in the nation today. the midwest frost comes on top

of record snow that closed indiana's major interstate. in milwaukee, power crews are out in it trying to keep the lights on. >> got to do your job. >> reporter: the arctic hurricane known as a polar vortex dipped into the deep south, causing power outages in dallas. >> back on. 12 1/2 hours. >> reporter: and snow in georgia. >> i've been out sweeping and just kind of cleaning some of this off of my car. >> pretty funny to see people all bundled up. >> reporter: shelters opened in atlanta. >> there is no way you can survive living out there in a tent with this kind of cold weather. >> even if you have to sit in a chair with a blanket at least you're out of the elements. >> reporter: almost 2,000 flight cancellations today. levi has been stuck in denver's airport three days. >> to wait and hope that i get

out of here. and hasn't happened yet. >> reporter: jetblue is hoping to get back in the air after shutting down completely in new york and boston. all over the u.s. it feels like mother nature left the refrigerator door open. guess who is excited about that. students across the midwest. they got a day off school yesterday a lot of them are going to be off today. not here in d.c. schools open and so is the federal government. live from washington, tracie potts, "today in the bay." >> things are always heating up there too. >> check with christina loren now and find out what's going on as far as de-icinde-icing. >> we might see some cities actually able to lift those flying restrictions later on today because like tracie pointed out it's not as cold as yesterday. they are still looking at a wind chill of negative 37 in chicago below 12 in new york city and under 5 in boston. it's going to be very problematic trying to catch a

flight on time. delays ripple out across the nation. we're going to keep you updated and i'm here through 11:00. san jose at 45 degrees. mountain view. temperatures overall are running 5 to 8 degrees milder than at this time yesterday. the reason why is that full blanket of clouds we have. once that sun starts making an appearance you'll see that. we should get a pretty sunrise in san jose. overcast skies to start along the peninsula and in san francisco highs are going to climb out of the 40s into the 60s working like this. 67 for the east bay, 60 in san francisco. and 65 degrees today in the north bay. and then our winter-like weather returns as of tomorrow. take a look at where we're headed. in the low 60s and upper 50s across the board and even cooler as we head through thursday with a few showers on the way. i'll track those to your doorstep if they are in the forecast. that's coming up. say hello once more to traffic

tuesday and mike inouye. >> hello to my little friends here on the bay bridge toll plaza t fast track lanes and lanes off to the right backed up off the berkeley curve. to the left not so bad but a fender-bender has cleared. more folks on the road, more chance of collision and backup. we'll look at the maps on the approach and maze. the east shore freeway shows speeds in the 50 area. as you travel through richmond and berkeley. no problems for the caldecott tunnel. great for west 24. slowing for west 580 but smooth through livermore to the dublin interchange. to the bottom of the screen, because of that volume of traffic as well as 84 out of livermore and pleasanton, it's causing a backup which i skipped over. you travel southbound 680 toward sheridan road reports after crash involving five vehicles. sounds like a couple might be in lanes. a live look, we'll see if it's backed up. there it is, around the curve

you see the taillights stacking up around past the gulf course up to sheridan add over the hill, that's a slow drive into the south bay. >> thanks, mike. 6:36. today is a federal court hearing for the man accused of setting a fire at the chinese consulate in san francisco. yan feng turned himself in friday after this surveillance video began circulating. today in court a defense attorney will likely be appointed for him. he is a chinese national and according to documents he said he targeted the consulate because he had been hearing voices. >> we're learning the priest beat tune death in his church on new year's day has ties to the bay area. rev ren eric freed spent three years at st. francis in mountain view, in the fall of 202 to spring of 2005. his body was found at st. bernard's catholic church on january 1. police arrested gary bullock.

>> live look at minneapolis this morning. sun trying to peek out. they are having a tough go with negative 9 at last check. they are going to have a high of zero. here is a look how chicago dealing with the chill. >> reporter: whether it be by bus, train or elevated trains getting in and out of chicago has been a problem. you can see some people had to spend the night here at union station. we talked to people this morning trying to get to texas, to north carolina, and even st. louis. but amtrak trains are not running or they were booked yesterday so they are trying to get on trains today. our suburban commuter service is also having a problem, that's our metra service. a lot of trains were delayed. people trying to get into the downtown area to get to work.

they are having issues as well because of frozen switches and some breakdowns. the cta, our elevated train them, they are okay but they have frozen switches and issues that today the weather is not going to get much better. we're in negative territory again. in and around chicago lately has been a major issue because of this subzero cold. >> lauren petty reporting. a storm in the atlantic caused strong winds and waves off of the coast of portugal yesterday. people were standing near the coast when all of a sudden this huge wave comes. many ran from the water. some tried to drive away. police confirm a number were injured. reminds me of the maverick competition. >> don't turn your back. >> people got messed up there. a potential for waves up to 60 feet. >> had to run quickly.

the polar vortex started in the midwest yesterday, now spreading to the east and even as far south as florida. >> going to check in with meteorologist christina loren and peggy bunker. first to christismith at sfo. jetblue prompted to put flights on hold. >> reporter: good morning to you. it's been a frustrating couple of days for travelers here at sfo particularly those on jetblue. the weather has been beautiful here in san francisco, but not where they are trying to get to. i spoke with a duty manager, he says still 12 flights canceled this morning in and out of sfo, mainly to the east coast, speaking with travelers have been spending time the family and friends between hotels and trying to rebook flights, trying to get home. they are telling us they are not being delayed for hours but sometimes for a couple of days with their initial flight canceled on sunday.

there are so many horror stories but this has to be one of the worst. an amtrak train that originated here got stuck after snow and ice froze that train to the tracks. this happened to three chicago-bound trains. a frozen ice box. 500 passengers spent the night on a frozen train. the freezing temps continued to grip the midwest and the eastern states today. even stretching down to the gulf coast. it's the travel that is really the most challenging. look at highway 65 in indiana. this also a true nightmare. this highway became a parking lot. the cold temperatures today after the snowfall creates treacherous road conditions in general. if you were crazy enough to be out there and needed to fill wake-up gas, even that was tough a. frozen gas pump in upstate

new york. snow plows did their best to clear the roads for the folks that did need to drive. you couldn't see anything with the snow blowing. of all of the power tools the snow blower reigned king, the most coveted as people plowed through their drive ways and sidewalks and hopefully did that for their napers. after a second day of enduring lows below zero, today's high in chikt, 5 degrees. brrr. >> don't go outside or tunnel. >> 30 next week how nice it's going to feel. >> 30 in the bay area. >> parts of canada dealing with freezing temperatures and many areas still recovering from a snowstorm last week. easy now with those, whoa, skating without skates is what we saw. some ache taking their chances

not the clearest shot but it shows all of these folks drive around the course and heading up to fremont. this is southbound 680 out of sunol, south of a4 it's a slower drive. it looks like all lanes have cleared of the four or possibly six cars or vehicles involveded in this earlier crash. reported here at sheridan, another at washington, the same incident and just in another crash between the two, all of the details are the same so i think it's the same incident called in by a number of people. we have the tri-valley. all of these down 680 and 84. we'll continue with the slow drive in through sunol or at least until later hours. the dublin interchange moves smoothly. an easy drive through castro valley. a little slowing, 10 south 880

out of san rean dro. this is a result of a crash on the northbound side. it was a left two lanes. distraction southbound and that caused a slowdown. that has cleared and things are recovering. as well as forward the dumbarton bridge. the peninsula an easy drive here, no problems for 101 or 280. between san francisco and the south bay. 101, 87, 280, all showing speeds in tort the upper defendants. you are at 50 miles per hour so because of the hol commute picking in now. a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. we have the fast track and cash lanes, since 6 olympic. very clear, a smooth drive and no problems for the flow into san francisco. back to you. >> thanks a lot. today we could hear the evidence
