good wednesday morning to you. thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm terry mcsweeney. charges could be filed against a man who admitted kidnapping a 7-year-old girl from her owner driveway. christie smith live with more on the case, including his bizarre jailhouse interview. >> reporter: good morning. the district attorney here in martin is expected to get the case from antioch police later this morning. the man accused of taking the 7-year-old girl, he's speaking out already, explaining in his words that this whole thing was a cry for help. claiming that the government has been following him for years and told him to do it. that's what the 43-year-old douglas told nbc bay area news from his jail cell in martinez, adding he did not harm the girl, who is at home safe. he scanned an antioch walmart

parking lot looking for a person to kidnap. the -year-old girl appeared to be the easiest person, so he followed her and her mom home in antioch, where he took her. he also says he came close to snatching three others over the last week. >> i did follow people up to that point and said no. >> reporter: now, he says he never touched her and he drove her around. police did find them at the marina. court documents show his stepfather recently tried to get a restraining order against douglas, claiming he threatened the family and was mad at his mother for not making an appointment at the psychology department at uc berkeley. he's being held here in martins on $4 million bail. reporting live in martinez, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. 6:02. the man accused of gunning down a 26-year-old in berkeley will make his first court appearance today. york was arrested monday and expects to be arraigned this

afternoon on charges that he shot and killed a man in south berkeley on july 17th of last year. berkeley police say the shooting prompted retaliation against work which lid to the fatal shooting of 8-year-old, four hours later. reportedly at a sleepover with york's daughter when someone opened fire. she was killed and three others injured. two men are accused of killing her, they will also be in court today. health officials confirm a second person here in the bay area has died from the flu-related illnesses and they fear this is just the beginning. the centers for disease control warns this flu season could get much worse before it gets better. "today in the bay's" peggy bunker in san jose. they usually have groups of most v vulnerable, some of these people are outside the groups. >> reporter: that's right, people getting the flu are not

the folks you think might get. it's a huge widespread problem across the country. reported confirmed second flu-related death in the bay area. a santa clara woman, she's just 41 years old, died last week of the same h1n1 strain that killed a 48-year-old woman. the 48-year-old woman from contra costa county in the east bay, complicating the flu for that victim. she did have unspecified preexisting medical condition. however, both women young to be dead from the flu. this, as more and more states are reporting flu-related deaths swin creasing numbers of people are getting sick. as mentioned, the interesting twist in the flux people catching the virus are young. >> seeing a lot of people eáñ healthy, in their 30s, 40s, 50, getting very sick with flu. >> reporter: so let's take a look at what's happening nationally. with the spread of the flu, take a look at the map here it shows

the cases of flu widespread. that would be the brown states versus regional spread of the flu, yellow states. california listed as having regional cases. however, some tougher situations in minnesota, state officials reporting 96 people hospitalized just this week with the flu. texas, 19 people are dead from the flu. and tragically, in florida, expectant mother has died after contracting the virus. who should be getting the flu shot. babies 6 months and older and on up should be getting that flu shot. also, other people who may have compromised immune systems, and of course elderly, want to make sure to get the flu shot. some people don't realize how young you can take your children in to get the flu shot. cdc recommends 6 months and older. >> how can you tell if you have the flu or maybe what you have is just a cold? both have similar symptoms,

though caused by different viruses. but there are key differences. we'll tell you what the cdc says to look out for ahead in our next half hour. turning now to the weather. nearly 200 million people still feeling the freeze this morning. temperatures in the east and deep south shattered records that in some cases stood for more than a century. the mercury plunged into the single digits and teens from boston and new york to atlanta, birmingham, nashville, little rock. workers are putting in long hours to bring furnaces back to life. >> hunker down, you can't leave people without heat, you can't do it. >> passengers nationwide faced delays and cancellations as airlines de-iced planes and tried to clear runways. we are in store for much needed rainfall. a look at live -- a live look at the eerie picture. >> beautiful. >> the fogyu' over the city ov the bridge.

"today in the bay" bob redell live by san francisco. ferry building with details. >> reporter: good morning. this is in addition to google's charter bus service that's been running for some time, catching flak in the city, starting they've chartered a catamaran, ferry that would shuttle employees between here and the port of redwood city aw short drive from the campus of mountain view. the catamaran provided by the manufacturer will do two runs in the morning, two return trips in the afternoon. capable of carrying almost 150 employees on each run. google is running this now on a trial basis. the company saying it's trying to find alternative ways to get employees into work, that it

more problems for the east coast down to the south. new video from suburb of atlanta where a water main break sent water shooting into the air of georgia perimeter college. the water quickly froze and turned to ice on trees and power lines. crews are working on the damage to repair. a busted pipe aboard an american airlines flight. the plane was in the air when the pipe ruptured. a morning executive producer was on the plane. the water spilled down the aisle soak several passengerers. the passengers had to get off so crews could get on and clean up the mess. after that, they were allowed to reboard and continue to baltimore. here in the bay area, rain in the forecast. >> look at that. >> i think r-a-i-n.

country. it's where a person goes up to someone at random and hits them in the head while someone else videotapes. police say on monday afternoon, a woman dropping off her daughter for dance practice at a studio on blossom hill road when hey man came up, punched her in the face, knocked her down and took off. police say the attack happened for no reason. so far, not enough evidence to say the knockout game as a motive. teachers are on edge because they don't know where the man came from or why he did what he did. >> it was shocking. i make sure i try to keep teaching so the kids are feeling safe and everything normal. but it was shaky, because we are not used to it around here. police are looking for anyone who saw the attack. they say the suspect ran away from the scene wearing a white t-shirt, jeans, and a backwards white baseball cap. the victim's cheek was red and swollen but refused to go to the hospital.

welcome back, everyone. 6:43. centers for disease control warns this year's deadly flu season could get worse before it gets better. already the h1n1 strain has killed two women in the bay area. "today in the bay's" peggy bunker live in san jose. what do we know about the people who died? >> reporter: this is what's interesting, laura. good morning. the h1n1 strain that is going around now, it's the same strain we saw back in 2009. its and a pandemic, labeled as a pandemic 2009, killed thousands. 25 state reporting widespread flu activity. we have our second flu-related death in the bay area. a santa clara woman, 41 year old, died last week of the h1n1 strain. it's the same strain that killeded a 48-year-old woman this week. a young woman, to be dead from the flu. this is more and more states

reporting flu-related deaths and increasing number of people sick with the virus. doctors divide them up into low risk patients and those with considerations, such as pregnancy, heart disease, diabetes, asthma. high risk patients age related. they can be younger than 5 and older than 65. that's typically constitutes high risk patient which is why the outbreaks a alarming doctors, that people getting sick are so young. >> based on 20%, the median age of our hospitalized case is in the mid-40s, we are seeing more pneumonia than last year. >> reporter: take a look at what's happening nationally with the spread of the flu. this map here, you can see the cases of flu, they are widespread, those are states in brown, versus regional, states in yellow. as you can see, california is listed as having reege in cases. other states hit hard,

minnesota, they are reporting 96 people hospitalized with the flu, just this week. in texas, 19 people have died from the flu virus. two sad cases to tell you about in the state of florida, one where a pregnant woman in her 30s died from the flu. a second pregnant woman who got the flu delivered the baby in late december, in critical condition. according to doctors, she might not survive. tragic cases when people think about the flu, they don't necessarily consider it to be something deadly. but that definitely can be the case. back to the 2009 pandemic of flu. you might remember back then, a shortage of the flu shot causing a lot of confusion and chaos as people rushed to get it. in the the situation these days. if you want the shot and haven't done it, there's time to do it. drugstores say pop in, you don't need to make an appointment, just head over and get the flu shot. it's a good idea to do so. >> according to the centers for

bay bridge east shore freeway approach moving nicely. we have an issue as well as west 24. here toward the caldecott tunnel two lanes blocked bay crash toward the caldecott tunnel slowing things down. we don't see the big backup we expect. there's a lighter volume of traffic, this being wednesday, we have a smooth flow through 24 and out of walnut creek interchan interchange. as you pass towards highway 24 and pinole. cleared from lanes but any car fire demands more crews through the area. tri-valley, drive speeds looking good. most of your slowing for west 580 out of the altamont pass. livermore, you're close to the 50 mile per hour mark. highway 84, through livermore and pleasanton, smoother drive. heading towards sunol and merge, slowing there and pleasanton for the same area we showed you, the speeds. south bound, northbound routes kicking in, 101 and 87 were the bofrt.

antioch walmart parking lot, specifically looking for a perfect kidnap victim. he says that on friday he followed the 7-year-old and her mom to their home in antioch and snatched the girl. he says that he had no reason to specifically target her except she was easy. but he was emotional at times in the interview, explaining that the people told him to do it. >> i said, i don't know, i'm supposed to take you, i just know that i am for some reason or other. these people want to see this happen. i don't know why. i said, but why don't we both try to calm down first and then we'll talk about it more in a minute. >> reporter: he had no intention of arming the girl who is now home safe. he says that the pair went to mcdonald's drive threw to get chicken nuggets, drove to the marina where police found them. court documents also show,
