it's near the spot where julian turns into mckee east of downtown. we hear it would be as large as 80,000 square feet. it's huge now sending up a thick black plume of smoke in the air which could impact traffic in the area including 101. >> it's burning not far from the mckee road exit. mike has how it is impacting traffic. the black smoke coming up. they haven't gotten water on it. >> this is the view from our traffic camera. that's where our camera is located, spun it around and there's the fire that we see all of that black smoke like you said clearly visible from 101. the commute is in the northbound direction, it is stacked up quickly happening as you approach storied road past toward 880. the southbound side is lighter traffic flow so that's not slowing as much.

but be careful because as you come around the bend folks will be distracted. do not use the mckee avenue off ramp south of the freeway. that will take to you the scene. stay away and travel along surface streets if you can. exit first, berryessa, alum rock which may still be too close or 680 around the bend and get to the areas you might, but avoid that mckee off ramp from 101 because we have all of this activity south of the freeway. we'll send it back to you. >> we can see the flames leaping higher on the right side. on the left it seems like the fire is trying to expand. flames off to the left. more flames trying to come up in that warehouse we don't know but it's huge, as large as 80,000 square feet. >> the thing is this camera is far away from the site but look how high those flames are leaping. so this is certainly emitting a lot of heat out of this warehouse fire burning there. we have a crew heading to the scene. firefighters will have to send

several crews. >> bob is on the phone now not far from the fire. what can you tell us? >> reporter: terry, we're at this other house fire which took place a few hours earlier this morning and some of the units from this fire, at least one, has headed over to the warehouse fire. talking to a firefighter he was telling me the warehouse is already at three alarms. they called for backup once, twice, he said he wouldn't be surprised if it went to a fourth alarm. this gives awe sense of how serious that fire is. with regards to the house fire here, we're at south 17th and east san fernando, you can see this fire is out. a single structure. a husband and wife live here, they did make it out okay. the husband thankful for his smoke detector. it was either in the dining room or the outside wall along the driveway. the fire department doesn't believe it's suspicious, probably accidental. trying to figure out the cause.
6:03 am
one of the challenges on this fire, this went to three alarms, by the way, was the fact it has a balloon construction, structure inside. that's an older style. so the flames are going up into the attic. it was just able to channel up into the attic a lot easier. so that was a challenge. as i mentioned, we did speak with the homeowner. he has been adamant about keeping fresh batteries in the smoke detector, changing them twice a year. clearly, that paid off. >> my wife heard the smoke detector go off. the front room was in fire. that was it. >> that detector? >> saved us. >> without it? >> probably be toast. >> reporter: his wife and himself obviously they made it out okay, the only ones here, what hurts the most is to see his home is if not destroyed severely damaged, a home he put 20 years of work into restoring.

breaking news for you, as we are looking out at the scene of a warehouse fire at 28th and julian in san jose. got to say in the past few minutes firefighters have really knocked down the flames on that fire. those flames were leaping in the air. vintage roof and tile. >> the danger is now we are understanding that there are loud explosions sounds coming from the site. bob is at the scene. that is what she reporting and our own peggy bunker talking to some of the first witnesses as well. there is a danger that firefighters are concerned about as well very close to the warehouse fire at vintage roof and tile you mentioned is dave's hay barn and feed. we know what will be in there. if this thing spreads firefighters could really have a doozie on their hands. as they already do with this massive warehouse fire. >> another aspect of this, in addition to the air quality, you see wind not blowing in san jose
6:27 am
right now going straight up. we have some more air pollution as a result. but we're just getting word of a roof collapsing, is that what i'm hearing? >> a roof has collapsed. the san jose fire department confirmed that the roof has collapsed in the building. they were concerned with retaining walls going down. but this was a huge structure fire. it continues to be this morning. so looks like they are tackling it from all sides to do what they can. this is again julian and 28th, very close to the mckee road exit off 101. we'll have the latest continuing.

6:29 am
breaking news in san jose, a warehouse fire, a huge warehouse fire at 28th and julian not far from the mckee road exit from 101 as you can see, smoke still billowing from the scene.
6:30 am
firefighters doing a pretty good job of knocking down the flames which were leaping high in the sky when we first started following this story last hour. >> that's right. it's pretty amazing. they were very high in the sky. now we're understanding that a roof has collapsed in the area. this gives you a different angle of the fire and how intense and large it is. we have crewings on the ground. it's at vintage roof and tile at julian and 28th. the danger is also not letting this fire spread. firefighters having a tough time getting at it. >> you can see the embers flying around in the sky. peggy bunker is near the scene. what are you seeing? >> reporter: it's interesting as we're talking to the many firefighters that are here on the ground i heard you talking about how big this was. we were coming from milpitas. we could see it, plumes of smoke also lots of fiery debris billowing into the sky. an impressive image. as we were approaching the fire. since we've been here i've been
6:31 am
talking to a chain of firefighters coming away from the scene. they are attacking this from all angles. what is not confirmed is if this is the vintage roof tile warehouse building, in front we have dave's hay barn. that is their goal trying to keep the huge fire from spreading to the other warehouses. we did talk to a firefighter you'll hear that shortly. he stead way they have to tack thl fire because of the makeup of the building is they cannot get on the roof. they will not good on the roof of this type of corrugated metal building. it's not safe. as he was telling me this, the roof collapsed around the building. they sort of were expecting that. they moved firefighters back a bit, tackling it from huge overhead water sources. as we mentioned, it collapsed in the few minutes we were talking to him. so, now the roof is down, they are continuing to hit that blaze, still very, very active. i'm looking at flames shooting out of the warehouse as we
6:32 am
speak. their concern is spread. they are packed in tightly together and a lot of the workers are lining the streets looking at these businesses wondering which one is burning. as i mentioned though the firefighters i've been chatting, they haven't been able to say yes, this is the vintage roof and tile company which is what we're speculating. it's not confirmed which building the fire started in. >> peggy, thank you. a roof collapsing gives firefighters a better shot at the flames, the fuel that is burning. and they seem to be making good progress now. nowhere near the amount of flames that we saw a short time ago. >> no doubt a lot of thick black smoke in the area. this gives you a different angle of the fire. there is a lot of debris. the good thing is wind gusts not very strong. we checked in with christina. that should help a bit in the fire fight. look at the burning embers there. you don't want those to spread to other nearby warehouses in
6:33 am
the area. >> bob is at the scene as well. what can you see? >> reporter: terry and laura, we're at 101 and mckee, we have a different vantage point. you get a good sense of the scope of this fire. that fire, that structure s about at least a good city block you can see there are two aerial ladders, one in the foreground, the one with the neon, one behind the smoke and if you look to your left there is a third ladder shooting water at least 50 yards, 100 yards, to give you a sense of how large this fire is, how much space and the resources that the fire department is putting into this. clearly they have taken the defensive posture. it's the only thing you can do when you have a roof collapse of this magnitude. this happened about 10 minutes ago. there was a large explosion, a popping sound and the fireball from that explosion went up about as high as that one aerial
6:34 am
ladder. maybe it was a propane tank. it was just a loud popping sound. you turned and saw this large fire ball extending into the air. whatever is inside that building still causing a problem. again we're at 101 and mckee, on the mckee on ramp to 101 northbound. you can see mr. are cars lined up. that's not because of looky lieus, but you look at the traffic northbound it is slowing in this area. who wouldn't slow down when you have a sight like this. it's not something you see every day. in the southbound direction because there is a sound wall there they are not able to see it as much so that traffic is moving. southbound 1 and 1 through mckee, 101 northbound they are able to see this so as any one would do they are slowing down to see what is going on. i'm looking at this fire looking like we have flames pick up on the southern section of the
6:35 am
building. we're getting a little wind which is blowing that smoke in the northern direction toward the downtown area. it's too dark to tell how much of this is going to be in affecting the breathing air and the visibility. reporting live at 101 and mckee, bob redell. "today in the bay." >> these give you difficult angles of the fire and how they are tackling it from all sides. the roof collapsed, large explosions heard from this fire, once again at julian and 28th. that is where it turns into the mckee road exit off of 101. bob gave you a glimpse of the traffic there so it's slowing downu! so it could affect the morning commute. you know, it's still that glow of that fire. >> bob was pointing outow far away the fire hoses are. then he showed us the explosion
6:36 am
and the fireball and you can understand why the firefighters are doing what they are doing and they know what they are doing to stay away from harm's way. there may be a building we're going to lose. an amazing fireball coming up out of that. talking about the drivers on 101, you know, only human nature to look and see something that spectacular and the slowdown. take a good look at it. >> it was believed to be happening at the vintage roof and tile. those are close to each other but we know there is a business called dave's hay barn and feed. they are trying to prevent this from leap there because you can imagine the contents of that building. this is something we're keeping a close eye on. ♪

little pops, noises and then a big boom will go off. even though they are hearing these are empty they are not sure. since we arrived here, this seems to have spread already. i don't know if you can see, if you want to zoom in. firefighters walking in front of us. this was not on fire when we first got here. now we see hot red embers in the front. when we arrived that was their concern. the concern is this could get more and more massive. also when i smoke with a firefighters he he said the alcohol are color of the smoke is very much a deep black, therefore it's an active combusting fire. the roof collapsed as we were talking to the firefighter, the roof actually collapsed around them. right now as you can see these firefighters going in to check out the situation of the warehouse in front with live
6:48 am
embers. the concern of all of the fires that we have spoken to is that this is going to spread. right now very active situation. you can see. >> when you're out there are you seeing embers coming down around you? we seem the see them up from some of the camera shots. >> you know what, the wind is really cooperating. we are close to the fire right now. i'm standing just across the street from it and it teams to be going straight up in the sky. you can see the smoke is filled with flaming embers. i think they are dropping back down on the warehouses that are around. if you zoom in to see these firefighters, that was -- it was not on fire, it's now filled with smoke burning embers. in our estimate this front building has now caught on fire. this is next to dave's hay barn and the interstate restoration construction business.
6:49 am
those are the two that we're looking at that were not in danger when they arrived. now that's not the case. >> amazing, thank you. >> we're getting word that rocket ship discovery prep school that is close to this fire is actually shutting today. classes are canceled there. parents are add vited not to bring their children to class. this is rocketship discovery prech school close to the fire near julian and 28th. you can see it from 101 this morning near the mckee avenue exit. i understand that chp doing what they can to control traffic and possibly close some of the exits. >> bob was talking about with northbound lanes, it's a parking lot. but the southbound lanes can't see it because of a sound ball. mike was talking about that a bit ago. let's check in with bob redell near the scene. what's going on where you are?
6:50 am
>> good morning. we've been able to move closer, still 101 and mckee, and from our vantage point you get a sense of now this fire progressed. you've got the bright light, you see a burned out a-frame. white smoke. we believe that's where this started. about 40 minutes ago that was at where the neon aerial ladder s. looks like a separate tuck tur, since then that fire has devoured that section. it's left an empty roof and now burning toward the left, toward this stuck tur in the foreground. whatever is in there is obviously burning very bell and it's difficult with these ladder truck, only two dumping on the planes. the fire department has taken a defensive poster. you can see the side wall of
6:51 am
this building. i have seen a hose down there. i know there is a ground crew on the perimeter that is also trying to fight it. not just from above but the sides as well. you can see how destructive this fire is, how it's devouring the roof. it's hard to actually put it doubt. that's why they take this defensive posture right now wit this fire. that building that's burning is probably the -- it's a long narrow look likes a warehouse, w of a city -- it's a long block. what we can'tfcxñ figure out is whether the fire started 18 separate structure or -- we don't have full sun light. it's difficult to tell. the traffic is 101 that brake lights are heading northbound, you notice that they are slowing at mckee because you are easily
6:52 am
distracted. as people t headlights head south they can't see what's going on. so the traffic is not affected. definitely in the northbound direction. as i look at people coming in from the south valley it's sl slowing so if you are coming into san jose from the blossom hill, evergreen area you're going to have to take this into account. it's causing people to slow down. as far as the embers we were also seeing embers in the sky, they are going up but as peggy was mentioning we have relatively calm winds. this is not like santana row where you had catching other places on fire. it look likes the embers are going into the sky and then opening out from there. i'm sure the fire department is keeping an eye on that as well.
6:53 am
again, you've got this three-alarm fire that could soon go to a fourth alarm. possible hi even greater depending what's going to happen. >> thank you very much. as you mentioned, the freeway there on 101 a lot of distracted drivers. the chp is closing the on and off ramp to the mckee road exit there off 101. in the south bay. look at all of that black smoke. >> got to look for little things. talking earlier there is nothing floating around at all. >> nothing. around san jose we're getting pretty strong winds in san francisco, but you'll notice the actual smoke, that's due to the farce of that water hose. you'll also notice the embers are falling slowly because they
6:54 am
are light. reportedly this is hay that is burning so that's also good. we don't have heavy embers traveling around. the next couple hours we'll watch this, keep in mind we have been so dry we all need to be on the baes of fire defendant. not much but a little bit. the winds are pretty strong in san francisco. san jose is calm. throughout the day we're going to see a change. cooler, more cloud cover and these foggy cells are expected. they should be clearing out by 10:00. 11:00. temperatures in the low 60s and upper 50s but getting the steady drizzle now give yourself extra time if you can and travel cautiously. throughout the next couple days, temperatures are going to stay pretty steady, then into next week we're talking about a major
6:55 am
warm-up. i wanted to talk about the hours we expect. the best chance is on saturday morning. >> hear you talking about the moisture in spots of the bay area, we're seeing the sheen. be careful out there. the biggest impact is because of this fire. i don't want to under play, we'll send it back to you. >> we want to send to the peggy now because she's at the scene of that fire. peggy, you saw the entire roof collapse? >> reporter: well, yeah, and also we had6 transformers explode. little alarms, wet hit the deck, this fire just advanced to the front building. it exploded. the fire burst through the front, even the firefighters are starting to back away a little.
6:56 am
i believe we'll have pg&e on scene. it was a deafening boom. it was extremely loud. you can see they are telling people is spreading. this barn was not on fire when we first arrived. it is engulfed.b> and the black plume coming from this full of hot empers, even to the point where the firefighters are sort of reassessing and pulling out the fire truck parked in front of that -- front warehouse. catching my breath. once again the firefighters now starting to get away from the back. i talked to somebody who works in this front barn. we aren't seeing hay on fire. it's really the back buildings. according to this manager these are empty. these are empty buildings. however, she thinks there was a
6:57 am
cannery here which may account for the explosion noises we hear. we heard this deafening boom that caused some of the electric pirs to go. that was due to the peer side of this fire. developing as we speak. i'm hoping you can see these as we stand in front of it and it is a vision. >> it is amazing to see this moyr. get yourself to safety as well. look at the transformers. they continue to try to find it. >> when you talk about the roof coming down in the warehouse is that the same shot where the firefighters were walking about 10 minutes ago? >> exactly. it was so unexpected. the last time i talked to you we saw emwers that had fallen onto the floor of that empy warehouse and we took pictures. in seconds it seemed to escalate
6:58 am
to the second floor. we saw flames burst out of the second floor. blew through it and in probably 30 seconds the wheel loof lid up and then it collapsed onto itself. you see them getting closer to where we are because we're in front of this. it's happening in front of our eyes. >> amazing to see the firefighters in that space and then we come back to you and the space is now on fire with the roof down on top and burning. gives you an idea what these are putting on the line. >> in fact, we happy to be rolling when that happened. let's listen to it now. >> oh, my gosh. ah! oh, my god. >> that's our own peggy bunker live at the scene right now literally, this fire wreaking a lot of havoc in that area.
6:59 am
luckily we haven't heard of injuries, we hope that continues to remain. >> time to go to bob real quick? >> reporter: terry, we saw the collapse from a different vantage point from here at 101 and mckee and to give you a frame of reference, this stricture, the length of a city block. that area there is the area that collapsed. the area engulfed. there is a building in the foreground. now that we're getting sunlight it looks to be difficult to save that as well. back to you. >> one we'reá@ ÷ going to conti to follow all morning long. our next local update is at 7:25 this morning.
