"we recently replaced our interior lightbulbs with new energy efficient soft white ones. they're so bright. how can we be energy efficient but not make -- >> here is a sample of lights. they're going to bring the lights up. they're going to be very bright when they first go on. what has happened now, the legislation in lighting is the 100 watt, the 75 watt, the 60 and the 40 as of january 1st are no longer manufactured in the united states. you can still buy them as long as supplies last, but in about a year they'll be gone. now, we're going to dim these just so it doesn't blow out the camera. >> can you dim them, though?

are they dimmable? >> certain kinds are. so this particular one over here is a compact fluorescent light bulb. notice how this one went out. this is l.e.d. this is a dimmable one. this is not. it is just dimming because we're here for camera. these regular curly qs -- see what happens when you dim it? >> i hate those. >> hate is a strong word. >> i use it for when i really hate something. i hate them. >> the color temperature of all of these have gotten a lot better. this technology is evolving. this particular one is an l.e.d. bulb. these are dimmable. the cost is coming down. the problem is when these first came out they were $50 apiece. these dimmable compact fluorescents, you can buy anywhere from $7 to $10, this is where it is going, the technology is getting better. >> how long will they last at that cost? >> the good quality bulbs, you get when you pay for, will last about six years as opposed to these that lasted about a year. regular incandescent bulbs, we're used to that.

they're very inefficient lightbulb. that's what we're transitioning to. this is all government legislation. >> no kidding. let's not get into that. >> here is a question from a woman named joanne lamarkka. >> oh. where is she from? >> how do you stop your toilet from running all night long? >> she's from jersey. her town. >> inside this toilet there are two aspects to worry about. this is the fill valve and this is the flush valve, the flapper. your water in your toilet is leaking because of two things. the water level in this little pipe here, the water is too high. this is the overflow. so it will constantly be running. you can adjust it by this screw that's right in here to lower the water level, bring it down in the tank. >> with a screwdriver? >> with a screwdriver. this is a flush valve. this flapper, if it is not sealed properly, water can leak inside here. you can replace this for five bucks. so easy. it comes off real quickly, put the new chain on, put this on -- joanne lamarkka's toilet in

we're back with a very special series called "shine a light." hoda and i get a chance to spotlight important people and causes that are very dear to our hearts. >> yeah, we wanted to start the new year by helping others and hopefully inspiring you guys to do the same. so here's a look at how we hope to make a difference. >> st. jude's is a children's hospital for kids with cancer. it pays the bills. it takes care of the kids. it helps the families. and it's not a sterile, horrible hospital situation. there's colors. and there's balloons. and there's toys. there's something about it that's uplifting and joyful. >> well, hello! >> the first time i walked into st. jude children's hospital in memphis i just remember the feeling that washed over me. i remember seeing a kid's face and you think -- you think when you walk in the door you're going to be sad, which i appear to be now, but there is

something when you walk in, you see these kids and suddenly you transform from sadness to joy. >> is this thing hard to push around? >> no. >> i remember thinking, like, what's happening? my heart was breaking and then five minutes later i'm with these kids who are kids. these kids who are playing. these kids with parents who were cheering for them. >> what keeps you happy? >> my daddy. >> and you could tell they don't want you to look at them with sad eyes. they want to play. they want to sing. they want to be joyful. this year my goal is to help kids with cancer. as a cancer survivor myself i know what it feels like as a grown-up and i know how difficult and what a struggle it is. but what i can't even fathom even now is what it feels like to be a kid, to be one of these little boys or little girls who are struggling with this grownup disease, something they shouldn't have to deal with. and you know, all you want to do is reach out and help and hug. i'm not a doctor. i'm not a nurse. i feel like you want to do something, but what can i do?

what i would love to do is make a huge incredible music video, okay? for these kids. with a song that's an anthem about being brave and being strong. and have this wave, this music video go across the country, from hospital to hospital to hospital, and you watch these kids and you think to yourself, like i want to be there. i want to be part of that. and you -- i think it makes not only the kids feel good and their parents feel good but us at home watching feel good. ♪ >> it dawned on me after hurricane sandy, so many people lost so much during that hurricane. we were blessed that we didn't lose our home, didn't lose loved ones. but we did lose like 250-year-old tree that had been there long before we were a nation. and so from that moment on, this whole past year has been about rebuilding, rebuilding what we had lost, and it turned out to be so much better.

2014 is going to be the year that my family celebrates 20 years in the same home. so i started chronicling pictures and things and hopefully by the end of the year we will have a coffee table book that is called "good giffts." g-i, g-i-f-f-t-s. "one year in the heart of a home." so that we can encourage other people to make memories with their children, share recipes, build a life together that's going to last. i also want to help those people who aren't as blessed. we want the proceeds to go to the salvation army, which is an organization i work with for well over 20 years that does fabulous work all year round. not only taking care of people's physical needs, hunger and clothing and material things, but they serve the whole human being. they understand how important a person's soul is and how important it is to minister to that person as well. i want this book to be a blessing to whoever picks it up. i want to put a smile on their
