another fire that follows that pattern of a fopossible arsonis. the san jose fire department responded to a small fire on the outside of a house on the first block of south 24th street. it is in the same area that has been targeted by an alleged arsonist in recent days. this fire was quickly put out and caused minimal damage, but then a second suspicious fire was reported in the area of south 26th and east san antonio streets not far from the first fire this morning. no one was injured in either blaze. now, the san jose fire department is urging people to be on high alert following the string of about a dozen suspicious fires, including one we reported yesterday as well. investigators say they believe most of these fires were set on purpose. investigators say all of the fires were set on the outside of those buildings. all of them have been very fast-moving, putting both residents and firefighters at risk. now the san jose firefighters association put up a $10,000 reward for information leading

newton earlier in the year, his coach, ron rivera, said he was limited how much he was able to run during the regular season because his coaches don't want him to take a lot of hits. on sunday cam newton will not be restricted at all and the 49ers expect him to run quite a bit. another thing the 49ers know they need to do is finish drives with touchdowns instead of field goals. they won their game over the packers last week in the wild card matchup with that last-second field goal by phil dawson. in that game the 49ers had reached the red zone four times and only came away with one touchdown. the panthers' defense is one of the best in the league in red zone protection and the 49ers know they need to walk away with seven points instead of three. lastly, they need to limit mistakes and execute details as the panthers are very good at forcing turnovers and very good at making their opponents head into mistakes as well. so the 49ers once again here in the divisional playoff round against the carolina panthers, they have only won one

san francisco is known as the city that knows how, but can the city's political leaders figure out how to accommodate the influx of high tech while maintaining its charm and traditions? nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston joins us to discuss the clash of cultures and potential fallout. happy new year, i could say, before we continue. >> and to you. first time. >> it's going to be a good year. so what's the issue here? we hear a lot of grumbling coming out of san francisco and on the other side folks saying, people, we need jobs. >> even good things have a bad side sometimes, the best things. san francisco mayor ed lee and the board of supervisors, they have done a bang-up job, kris, in terms of attracting dozens of new high-tech businesses led by
7:47 am
the likes of twitter, salesports.com, zynga, yelp, the list goes on and on. these companies have brought a tremendous amount of wealth to the city with thousands of employ is making pretty good salaries. >> clearly, though, there's fallout because people say a lot of those tech workers, they're young and hip and want to live in the city and they have plenty of money to do that. >> they do, and that gets to the other side of this high-tech boom, if you will. most people, they like to live, we all do, as close to work as possible. that's created a huge problem for the city, which has really the least affordable housing in the nation. even before the influx of high-tech residents. only 14% of the people who live in san francisco can actually afford to buy a home. so rents have gone up as much as ten times as much as the rate of inflation. also the board of supervisors has lifted the annual number of apartment conversions to condominiums to 2,200 from just 200. well, these changes have forced
7:48 am
hundreds, maybe even thousands of residents to move out as well-paid tech workers move in. i tell you something, you might have seen the reason tu multiple over the big buses that big up passengers in the city. they take them to their jobs. that's about as environmentally responsible as anybody could anybody could possibly imagine. still, people have screamed over this preferential treatment. what we're really seeing is the symbolic layer, kris. the bigger issue here and much more important issue is this question of housing. that's the thing that's got people going. >> this week i covered google ferry to get people from san francisco down to redwood city and then on the bus over to mountain view and google. so they are trying to respond to the criticism. how is the city responding now? >> a few things are in the works and i think they may wind up making a pretty big difference. first, mayor ed lee has called on the tech companies to share
7:49 am
that i wealth with the city through philanthropy. some of that is already happening in terms of lots of dollars, half a million here, half a million there. corporate giving can go a long way toward addressing some of the city's needs, that's for sure. second, there's a new tech-driven organization. this group has been formed to work on affordable housing, education and jobs. that critical combination. and third, the city has redoubled its efforts to build more affordable housing, to keep the current residents there while allowing for this influx of new residents, so they're not sitting still. >> so the question, though, is are those policies going to work. a lot of folks want them to pay their fair share, they want them to pay to stop at those muni stops and we want more money to ask for philanthropy and such, will it work? >> we'll have to wait and see. change is hard. it's hard for all of us, especially when our lives are so directly impacted in the job sector, in where we live, things like that. san francisco's ability to
7:50 am
attract so much of this new business, particularly during a queasy economy, it's really something. it's a tribute to its leaders. but they're going to have to be careful. they're going to have to be careful to preserve the city's character in the midst of all this growth. if they don't, residents just may revolt at the polls. we've seen it already when they blocked a huge apartment complex near the embarcadero and there's nothing to say they might not do that again in the future. >> what i find interesting is that a lot of the tech workers that are here are coming from other places and so they may not vote the same way that a native san franciscoan or someone that's been here for a while. >> they may not be as invested. the city has this rich tradition, all these cultures have blended. the question is can this new group fit in while contributing so much at the same time. it's a wonderful story to watch. >> it's also nice to see the jobs. thank you very much, larry. happy new year. nice to see you.
