49ers now one win away from the super bowl. why it will be tough for bay area fans to go to this weekend's game in seattle. >> and it's hard to believe but we're talking about fire danger, 20-30 degree warm-up. your full forecast lots to go over. >> for the third commute day in a row we have a big problem for northbound 101 through san jose. an injury crash involving four vehicles. our camera is on. we'll give you the latest. >> a live look to san jose. a warming trend. christina has been talking about it. real nice temperatures, fire dangers, it's monday, january 13, and this is "today in the bay." a very good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm terry mcsweeney.

we begin with breaking news. a two-alarm house fire has been put out, broke out less than a half hour ago on the 17,000 block of krothers road. peggy bunker on the way to the scene. she will give us a live report once she gets there. this morning's fire comes as the hunt is on in the south bay for a serial arsonist, he struck at least five times over the weekend. police released a sketch of this person of interest. around 6 feet to 6'2", weighing between 160-180. he has large frame glasses. he caused 13 suspicious fires near the downtown san jose area in less than a week. all have been set between 2:00 and 6:00 in the morning. people in the area handing out flyers now, and even organized a neighborhood watch to keep their homes safe. >> autopsies will be performed on a palo alto couple found dead in their burned out home.

investigators say they tried to figure out what happened. they think the fire started in the kitchen and say it was difficult to fight because the home was filled with boxes, newspapers and clutter. their identities have not been released. >> a former santa clara elementary school principal accused of selling drugs is going to be back in court. eric lewis pleaded not guilty including five felonies, in court for preliminary hearing. the former principal of montague ely was arrested in 2012 after police received a tip he was selling methamphetamine in san jose and san francisco. if found guilty the 32-year-old could spend up to eight years in prison. >> now on to the 49ers' quest for six nfl titles. >> this time we hope to win. yesterday the niners down early to the panthers before dominating the game. kaepernick finding vernon davis.

they said he wasn't in, they reviewed it and he was in. gave nem a three-point lead. second half now kaepernick scoring. niners win, 23-10. san francisco face the seahawks in the nfc championship game. a tough time getting tickets. >> bob is live at team headquarters and bob, the seahawks are making sure they have as much home field advantage as possible. >> reporter: they are. good morning to you. when the nfc championship game tickets go on sale at 10:00 this morning the seattle seahawks will be blocking people from california from purchasing. if you were to go online and try to purchase directly from the team you'll be denied once you enter your billing. only allowing washington state, oregon, montana, idaho, alaska, hawaii and parts ever canada to make purchases. the seahawks stadium is considered one of the noisiest.

the team apparently wants as much of that cheering to be for seattle, not san francisco. which is why they are trying to limit the number of 49ers fans by making it hard to buy tickets. >> i think it's wrong. why should we have to pay more just because we're going to seattle. >> that's the question. who wants to ride up 14 hours on the bus and get there and not have tickets. how do we get tickets. >> reporter: you have to buy them from secondary websites. the cheapest are going for around $460. this is not unheard of. denver is doing the same thing to patriots fans blocking fans from buying to the afc championship game. jim harbaugh you saw there signing autographs on his return home had no comment on this ticket issue. maybe he will when he has the conference at noon in santa clara. bob redell, "today in the bay."

beautiful conditions out there. temperatures look at this on wednesday, 80 -- i know. 80 degrees. look at that. 76 on thursday, warm for this time of year. we're tracking the potential for showers in your seven-day forecast. i'll get to that in a minute. mike has a traffic alert. >> the great weather is the reason folks want to live and work here but a lot of folks, now a crash, fire truck, ambulance, chp, chp, facing the opposite direction on the southbound side of 101 right south of the alum rock mckee. you see two vehicles there. you look at the map, these two lanes are jmed up, approaching alum rock. now stretching back from actually road, you saw chp there. so far we have a smooth flow.

stories. police are looking for this man they think he may have set more than a dozen fires in the downtown san jose area in less than a week. all of the fires have been set between 2:00 and 6:00 a.m. officials are offering a $10,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the person responsible. >> former basketball player dennis rodman apologized again for implying in an interview that missionary ken bae did something to deserve being held captive. rodman plans to return to north korea next month. >> 49ers a step closer to the sixth super bowl title following yesterday's win against the panthers. the 9ers back in town getting ready for sunday's showdown with seattle. >> interesting story. a discussion about cancer has exploded into a full flight on line. >> columnist taking issue with a blogger. >> i suspect nobody set out to

hurt anyone. but feelings have been hurt. time columnist bill keller wrote over the weekend about breast cancer called heroic measures and featured a prominent blogger named lisa adams. adams has stage 4 breast cancer, she's made her fight for her health very public on a blog and twitter account. the take away some got from "the new york times" column is that lisa should stop fighting, that there is some kind of point it no longer makes sense and you should have acceptance instead. it has as you might imagine caused strong reaction online. one mother wrote, disgusted that the new york times would run a heartless piece like this. another said deeply condescending. adams herself tweets simply thank you for your support. >> wall street trying to figure out what went wrong with friday's jobs report. where the labor department said america created less than half the jobs that economists had expected in the month of

december. this is a challenge for the brand new head of the fed janet yellen who along with her committee members had been advocating slowing fed stimulus because things had gotten so much better except maybe they vchblt overnight a japanese company announced it bought bean company the maker of jim bean, makers mark, a $13 billion deal. you knew it was expensive. if you want to buy all of it costs 13 big, big, b's. >> thank you, scott. >> 15-year-old from the bay area ledded to sochi part of the olympic figure skating team. polina edmunds found out she and two other figure skaters were named to the team. she is the first female figure skater from the bay area competing in the olympics since -- >> kristi yamaguchi.

jose open? i think so. >> i'm not sure. vile to check on that during the break. you can check it out. 45 degrees in san jose. she was on. 45 in livermore, 37 in concord. 54 degrees in san francisco. you got to love that information at your finger tips. right there at the bottom of the screen throughout all of my reports. let's get to it. high pressure is in control, the dominant feature. you're going to notice all of that wind up and around the ridge of high pressure moving from land to sea negating the marine influence. as a result these are your temperatures now. and this is where we're headed. even with only about nine hours of daylight, 47 degrees in san jose, up to 68 later on today. livermore is 69 degrees later on today, we'll be at 70 degrees in napa, and it is going to feel like spring even early summer. look at these. south bay is going to be the warmest section, 70 degrees in morgan hill. peninsula pretty good, mid-60s,

out in san francisco, juts just about as warm. a clear coastline. our air quality is likely to suffer throughout the week. that's the forecast, this is your official forecast for the bay area, air quality management district. tuesday i don't believe we'll be sparing the air tomorrow. it's possible. i think we'll get by with another day. but likely doing so on wednesday into thursday as the dry stagnant air mass sets up. we're tracking showers in the seven-day forecast. i'll get to that in a minute first, let's say good morning to see what mike is working on. that traffic alert. >> look at these flashing lights. north 101 approaching the alum rock mckee off ramp. two ambulances, one about to lead. i saw them load somebody. a fire crew block as lane. on the southbound side we have a chp vehicle so look at the slowing, we'll show you on the map. north 101 is backed up.

we'll see tully road to the alum rock and mckee off ramp. jammed up from the approach and all the way to the scene. the south bound side though we had a vehicle there is not causing a distraction. we expect more folks to take 280. the the commute building for that portion of the bay. and we do see more slowing around curtner as well, and capital two ways to get over or 87 instead of 101. we expect a slower drive into downtown. third commute day 18 row. now monday slowing here. there is the tri-valley. no big surprises and the bay bridge toll plaza will end with this backup. metering lights are on. back to you. >> mike, thanks very much. >> shotgun. kaepernick is going to throw it deep. anquan boldin. >> 49ers moving on to the nfc title game thanks to a lot of people including anquan boldin making that catch there.

that 45-yarder led to a kaepernick touchdown run and stamped the team's ticket to seattle. all part of the quest for six. for the 49ers. it wasn't just the offense that stepped up. >> mindy and matt tell us about about the moment that changed yesterday's game. >> coming into the divisional playoff game it was really heralded as a two best defenses in the league. at least two of the top defenses. when you look at the 49ers defense they really wanted to prove they were every bit as good as the panthers. it started in the first drive for the panthers in the third quarter. how did you see that set up the rest of the game? >> the 49ers were a step slow as we talked about on offense and defense it looks like. when the 49ers offense scored at the end of the first half, then the defense really picked it up. they forced a three and out at the very beginning of the second half which led to a 49ers touchdown and a 10-point lead. then what happened was that the panthers put together 13 play,

controlling the clock, they really were in position to make a ball game out of it. get back, cut it inside a touchdown. but then the 49ers defense stepped up with two huge plays. a sack and all of a sudden the panthers' back was broken. 13-play drive and all they had out of it was a punt. i think that was the key sequence t 49ers defense stepped up big time in the third quarter. >> on that long drive the punt came with two reserves in. i thought the 49ers rotated effectively. >> they did. we've seen this. the 49ers have good depth. look at what they have done with carlos rogers, a starter, who played every snap at cornerback. tramaine brock and carl brown are the starters now. at cornerback.

a very good monday morning to you. taking a live look outside. san francisco this morning. clear skies. it's hard to believe we're going to see really warm temperatures this week. christina is talking about 70s, 80s. we'll check in with her. crazy, right. head to the beach in january. 6:24. >> the california senate begins debate on a new bill barring employees of state public transit system from going on strike. the legislation was propose bid bob huff following the strikes by b.a.r.t. workers. he says if we make californians rely on public transportation we have an obligation to make sure it keeps running. an employee who broke the no strike law would be docked in pay for every day the law is

broken. if you park at certain b.a.r.t. stations you have to bring more change. starting today fees at many stations increase by 50 cents, the increases affect fremont, pittsburg bay point, daly city. b.a.r.t. officials evaluate parking lots every six months and can increase or decrease the fee depending on how many are parking there. >> still ahead we're following breaking news. an early morning house fire breaks out in san jose. we talked to investigators to see if they think it's the work of a serial arsonist. >> more on the 49ers win.

peggy bunker is there. this comes as a community is on edge about a serial arsonnist. is this tied to the other? >> reporter: we're waiting to hear if there will be news this morning. there have been fires and fires every day so taking no chances we came up here, in the east foothills off of krothers road near alum rock road. we came to a two-alarm house fire. this neighborhood is different from all of the different neighborhoods and the different blocks where the previous fires have been set. we got up here we talked to rob brown. he said this is not connected in any way to the other fire. but this is what he had to say. they had relief to have a break this morning from a series of fires set. and they credit the neighbors to that. you might remember all of the fires that have been set since last week we've been covering one after the next especially on friday morning a woman's porch was set on fire a couple blocks

away another fire torched the side of a home near 101. sunday morning, yesterday, the fires started up about 2:00 in the morning and there after about three fires ignited. one of those set next door to a home that was targeted on friday. then a few hours later at st. john baptist church a second fire was set. the first last wednesday. and across the street another fire a third one across from st. john's so that area on edge as it was appearing to be targeted. according to captain brown, neighbors near downtown san jose they have come together, he is crediting that for perhaps the lull in fire this is morning. take a listen to what one neighbor had to say. >> turn the porch lights on, it does make a difference. make sure that things are visible so that this guy can't hide out and set multiple fires in a short time period. >> reporter: also helping out according to captain brown t

sketch that was released by police. this is a sketch of the suspect. we have a description that we want to share with you. police say that he is between 25 and 40, also about 6 to 6 foot 2. 160 to 180. white or hispanic male. and interestingly wears large glasses. that is a description police are releasing to the public. according to the fire department it's the vigilance of the neighbors looking out especially with the sketch, with that description that's got to be helpful as they continue to look for this person. i just talked to the captain a couple minutes ago. he is exhausted. this is going on for days. these fires one after the next, all of the neighbors concerned. so we'll continue to watch for enthusiasm morning but again this two alarm house fire possibly started by somebody maybe smoking on the deck in the back of the house, it was put out by the owners, no injuries to report. staying vigilant.

back to you. >> thanks so much. it is 6:31. we're finding out more about the massive data breach at target. now there are reports that other retailers were also hacked. tracie potts is live on capitol hill with what we've just learned about some of the others. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. target where between 40 and 110 million people were affected, today we heard for the first time from ceo of target. says they are going to get to the bottom of this and he is defending the fact that the store took four days to let customers know. he said they had to get a handle on it. get rid of the virus and figure out what all of their hundreds of scores were going to be telling people to do as a result of this breach. now you mentioned others that may have been involved. not necessarily linked but we know that neiman-marcus reports a breach around the same time.

reuters says they have a source telling them three other u.s. retailers saw breaches as well, credit card numbers or other personal fgs taken. it's just not clear who those are. the names haven't been revealed. and if they were linked. as many as five retailers that were attacked by hackers. >> wow. check those statements. thanks so much. >> one step closer to the elusive sixth super bowl. the 49ers are back in the bay area waiting to get back to work. >> there is head coach jim harbaugh thanking the fans that welcomed the team home late last night. they all turned out screaming and yelling. 49ers beat the panthers, setting up sunday's showdown with rival

the seattle seahawks. >> in that game colin kaepernick touchdown run gave them a lead over carolina but it was his moves after that turned some heads. he imitated panthers superman celebration after the td run before kaepernicking as he does. he said that's not the first nor it will be the last time somebody does that. >> running back frank gore had a massive game. he did move up the record books. a nice run there. 84 yards put him ahead of steve young. gore has 632 all-time playoff yards, now behind roger craig who has 817. >> jim harbaugh was coaching with a heavy heart. his grandfather joe passed away yesterday morning in ohio at the age of 98. harbaugh says he hopes his

participation. >> fun to look at. let's check in with christina. we have a spectacular and bizarre week. >> it's going to be unseasonably warm. good morning to you. great weather for the return of our 49ers. 54 in san francisco now, 36 in the north bay, and 53 degrees in the east bay. i want to show you san francisco, mostly clear, no fog, no low clouds. and really a nice clear start here. the coast is clear as well as your inland valleys. it's going to be warm. get to your microclimate forecast. we'll be in the 70s in morgan hill, along the peninsula and san francisco, temperatures are going to be a tough cooler than what we are expecting. upper 60s. about three degrees of operation between san francisco and san jose. up in the north bay, 69 for sausalito, same for the east bay and the tri-valley.

a foster farms plant in livingston is closed again one day after calling employees back to work. the usda shut the processing

plant down on wednesday because of a cook roast infestation. the suspension was lifted two days later and work resumed this weekend after foster farms cleaned and treated the plant. now the company says it is voluntarily suspending operations for several days so it can properly implement new safety measures. >> 6:41. a southwest airlines jet that landed at the wrong airport is expected to get back on track as early as this morning. flight 3014 from chicago midway was supposed to land at branson airport in missouri but instead landed at a tiny airport about seven miles away. no one was hurt. no word on why the plane landed at the wrong airport. passengers reportedly received a $200 voucher for their trouble. they had to bus them to the right airport. >> the bus trip was free. >> yeah. >> the time 6:41. more than a dozen fires in the past week. the man investigators believe is behind these arsons. >> the niners now one win away

the first thought is this connected to the other fires? 11 confirmed arson fires, two still under investigation. we talked with captain rob brown who let us know this was not connected to the others. you're looking at video of those, these started last week. up to 11 now of arson fires that sort of hop scotched this area near downtown san jose near 101. it's been tough for the community, for the neighbors who are wondering every night when they go to bed is my house next? take a look what the neighbors are saying now about the situation. >> this individual is putting a lot of people in danger, causing a lot of property damage, a lot of money, resources going to this. so we want to get him into custody as soon as possible. >> reporter: that's the case. they want to get whoever is responsible for these fires into custody. we have a picture, this is what the police have released. the description, white or hispanic male, between 25 and

degrees. 45 in livermore. concord at 37. good looking day shaping up. cold until about 11:00 a.m. temperatures climb out of the 50s and 30s where we are right now. into the upper 60s. we've got a really warm day shaping up. i want to make sure you're aware. your seven-day forecast tells that at the bottom of the screen. it's going to be warm and dry most of the week. that does not mean that we're ruling out the chance for showers. i'm going to get to that in a minute. for "today in the bay" area upper 60s, low 70s. no real separation. that's because of offshore flow. what that means that warm-up is really going to kick in for us. by tomorrow you'll likely notice hazy sky, temps climb 10 to 15 degrees above average. wednesday and thursday likely getting into a spare the air pattern so keep that in mind. it's okay to burn today if you wanted to have a nice fire this morning. not probably the case as we head to wednesday and on thursday. here's where we're headed. i'm using santa cruz because this is the extreme. the city that we expect to hit

about 80 degrees on wednesday. 76 degrees by thursday. temperatures cooling off a touch as we head through friday and saturday. then look at what happens, that storm track finally comes back to the south. you can see all week long. it's going to be well out of the area. then by about noon on saturday starting to see it return this week, a 10% shot for rain. that increases as the storm track stays north into next week. that's the good news. a little bit of something for everybody in this week's forecast. let's check your drive and good morning to mike inouye. >> any sleep in the forecast? keep working on it. looking here. north 101, slow but look, there is the recovery. the earlier crash 101 has cleared and there is one chp vehicle. no flashing lights. snow capital in toward about tully road. all lanes clear, that shift in place for much of the morning commute.
