from nbc news, this is "today" with kathie lee gifford and hoda kotb, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> hello, everybody. welcome to booze day tuesday. it is january 14th. we're here in our -- they let us into the big studio today, where the big people play. we're excited. nice to see you all. >> how are you? >> very, very good since we just spent the last couple of hours together, and you lost your phone twice. >> that's what i do. my mom was up late last night, i woke up this morning at 4:00 when i got up and got a text from her. it said, hello, hodi. i was watching jay leno and he said something funny about kathie lee and you and wine,
2:06 am
just so you know. i sent the e-mail in and apparently he did. >> let's look. >> here's what he said. >> a major highway in canada had to be shut down after a truck accident spilled thousands of bottles of wine on the road. they had to fly in kathie lee and hoda to help clean up. >> we're the ones for the job. by the way, congratulations, jay, on so many amazing years. every time i see him now, i think pretty soon we're going to have our friend jimmy fallon there. but talk about an amazing accomplishment, you know? >> a class act. real class act. we asked you guys if you wouldn't mind sending in dressup pics of your pets. and, you know what -- >> today is national dress up your pet day. >> you sent them in like crazy. carrie's dog, buddy, has got a tux on. >> aw. >> melissa's dog is next, percy
2:07 am
dressed as a pilot. of course. >> the last dog in the tux looked a little like phil robertson. can we go back for a second? doesn't he, a little? >> who is phil robertson? >> "duck dynasty". >> this dog is dressed up as a martini. >> is that the front or the back? >> the dog's name is martini. we get confused. >> hoda apparently already had a couple of martinis. and then, yes, we were ready for super bowl -- what was that before? yeah, that's out in our backyard. >> all have sweaters on for the giants? >> yeah. football season, yeah. >> how cute is that with frank? >> and hoda's dog blake. >> that was the other day, he has on a blue zippy hoodie. >> he's sick. >> he's on the mend. we're paging through the post. >> there is a new verb, called lawrencing. >> okay. >> so jennifer lawrence wore

2:09 am
>> tina and amy were hosting the awards and amy poehler actually won her first golden globe. she got up there, so excited about it. and she made a comment that was about taylor swift, when what was it -- >> yeah, where are you going with that? last year at the golden globes tina fey and amy poehler were teasing taylor swift about stay away from michael j. fox's kids. taylor swift later told vanity fair, there is a special place in hell for women who don't help other women, referring to the ladies' joke. i can see that being said facetiously. so now you take it, hoda. >> amy poehler won her globe for "parks and recreation." she and tina had a little exchange. >> say congratulations again to my friend amy poehler. i love you. >> there is a special place in hell for you. >> okay. >> now, a lot of people probably saw that and thought what does that mean?
2:10 am
>> what is confuse about it is earlier in the evening, remember the actress who said for those of you who go to hell and don't come back, remember? that's why people were confused as well. >> now taylor swift -- >> jacqueline bisset said that in her acceptance speech. is anyone following any of this at all? there are tweets that came back toward amy and tina. >> i hate amy poehler and tina. blank you guys are so dumb. another one said i'm never watching the golden globes again. that's for sure. i'm not about to watch my idol get shaded. >> and i don't think it is going to matter because the golden globes got a ten-year high in the ratings bringing in almost 30 million viewers. good for them. i think they have one more year on their contract. >> they were awesome. they were so good. so good. >> all right, what's next, hodi? >> diane keaton, i don't know if you saw her at the golden

every day. >> welcome, ladies. i'm intimidated already with how fabulous you three are. >> this is a big undertaking for you. tell us what the study showed. >> the shriver report looked at the status of the american woman and what we found is it is precarious and one in three women are on the financial brink, turning in and out of poverty and that women are concentrated in wages and minimum wage jobs where they don't have any sick days and they're struggling between caring for their children, putting food on the table, taking care of parents, and feeling like they have to do it all. >> and that's on a good day, when things are going well. >> on a good day. we think that also the face of poverty has changed. we think that people dress up and they look like we were just talking about that she looks like she has it all together, but she's really stressed out, she's trying to care for children, she's trying to run a construction business, she's struggling financially. and you were saying that the callout really spoke to your particular predicament, it has

millions of women around the country. >> doing it all, i feel that i really do it all. i run my business, i take care of my children, i'm completely a single parent, and i have a child with special needs and we are just -- >> you're in the construction field, which can't be easy on top of everything, right? >> yeah. >> most of the time it is terrific. people are great and supportive. but it can be very difficult. >> but you're a statistic that is growing and that is that it used to be that we had a classic family, two parents, and the man was the breadwinner and the woman was the stay at home mom. that's changed dramatically. >> only one fifth of american families are like that. the majority are because they have to, it used to be that maybe the woman's income was the second income. now families have to and so they need different kinds of things from business, they need different kinds of things from political leaders and different kinds of things from partners, men and women. >> what were your most -- when did you run into brick walls? what was the toughest part?
2:51 am
>> finding a business in construction right before the economy turned. that was the big brick wall. changing in banking rules. >> what kind of advice -- >> well, cindy is trying to fit it all together so she can be her best, there really is no balance. one thing she can do is focus on one thing at a time. you're trying to stabilize the finances of your business. you said sometimes you struggle to get extra help. we all do. we think we can do it ourselves. be creative. reach out to a local college. maybe there is a entrepreneurship group that can get the minority, women and business enterprise certification that you stopped getting because it was overwhelming, have them take it through to the end. that can help you get government contracts that can help your business but get help, be creative, go out to your community. >> a lot of women, not only do they go to work, but they have to pay for child care and for all of those other needs. >> one step forward, two steps back. >> one thing people said in the poll was that -- what they

really need was time and they wanted that even from men who weren't in the relationship anymore, they wanted them not for the money that they could provide, they wanted them to be involved with their children's lives. women like you struggle to, your job, your children and then people like us say, well go take a course online and -- >> when do i get the time to do that? >> it is a bit of a struggle because you're saying go get this fund and go get that and apply for this and that's all really time consuming. how does she do all that? >> actually, reaching out to that college student group would be one phone call. >> a job for internship. >> and get somebody to help you. sometimes you think that's an overwhelming task when really it is an e-mail or phone call you put on your calendar and do it. be less reactive and more intentional and plan the small meaningful points into your day. >> and less judgmental on yourself and that there are so many groups out there that support women like yourself, who are feeling stressed financially, stressed

emotionally. >> nice to know you're not alone, right? >> true. >> thank you for being with us. >> come back. >> yes, just scratched the surface. >> not even scratched. >> we're going to do some scratching. tomorrow what do we have? >> we'll be answering your questions, an all digital, twitter, facebook, e-mail. using the #doingitall. >> oh, tweet about it. here is an easy way to get it all done in the kitchen. just use one pot. >> but first this is "today" on nbc.
