why. in roswell, new mexico, heartbreak and tears. many in this small community know the young victims and the suspect well. tuesday's shooting shattered the sound of laughter. at berrendo middle school. students waiting for the first bell, instead were met with gunfire. >> everyone in my class thought it was a drill or something. >> police say the 12-year-old suspect used a sawed off shotgun to shoot a 12-year-old boy in the face, 13-year-old kendal sanders was also seriously injured. >> i seen him shoot and the kid fell on the ground with his hand covering his face and was crying. >> reporter: it could have been worse. john masterson stopped the shooter asking him to drop the 20-gauge shotgun. an off-duty police officer ran inside to help. >> it's one thing for an armed state police officer to enter

the school and do his or her job, it's another thing for a teacher or staff member to intervene. >> with both victims airlifted to a trauma center, parents rushed to campus fearing the worst. the gunfire was over in seconds, the investigation just beginning. >> we got some preliminary information that possibly some of the students were warned by the individual. we have not corroborated that yet. >> reporter: after searching the suspect's home, police have yet to release a motive. in roswell, there are no answers. for now, only grief. >> though, the suspect's name is being widely reported, police have not yet released the minor's name. the family is said to release a statement later today. savannah. >> breaks you heart. miguel almaguer in new mexico, thank you. let's turn to new jersey now and a new apology from governor chris christie over bridgegate. during tuesday's state of the state address he said voters

deserved better. nbc's kelly o'donnell has more from the state capital in trenton. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. the bridge scandal now moves into a second week since those e-mails came out and examination into what happened moves into a new gear. law makesers will create a new investigative committee and they'll give that committee subpoena power. while the governor says that this mess should not be a distraction from the state's other business. christie's crisis management plan. >> we will cooperate with all appropriate inquiries to ensure that this breach of trust does not happen again. >> the words appropriate inquiries carefully chosen. a signal to lawmakers who formalize their investigations tomorrow to keep focus on the core of this controversy. who in christie's administration ordered the traffic lanes closed and why. christie's senior aides, some of whom may be called to testify were on hand for his address.

numbers have suffered some, his overall approval is close to 60%. they'll take that for now. and the governor is going to begin traveling around the state next week to talk about some of those policy ideas that he laid out in the speech and to try to get things figured out in the week ahead. matt. >> kelly o'donnell, thanks very much. breaking news. new revelations about the nsa this morning. >> that's right. new allegations this morning that the nsa has placed software on nearly 100,000 computers worldwide so it can snoop when the machines are not linked to the internet. nbc's jim miklaszewski has the latest. good morning. >> good morning, natalie, u.s. military and intelligence officials are not commenting on this story which first appeared in today's "new york times." it's well understood that the u.s. is constantly launching cyber attacks against friends and foes alike worldwide. in this case, it's revealed that tiny transmitters have been implanted in the computer systems of over 100,000 computer systems worldwide. and the way they work, many of these transmitters are implanted

in the computers at manufacturing. but they can also be implanted in the plug-ins for the usb cords, the same kind of usb cords that many of you use every day. now, according to u.s. military officials, these attacks have occurred not only against the chinese military but some friends including european trading partners and saudi arabia. but the fact these tiny transmitters can be planted in these plugs indicates there's going to be a rush to go out and replace many of these usb cords on computer systems worldwide today, natalie. >> i can only imagine. jim miklaszewski at the pentagon, thank you so much. >> you bet. santa ana winds out in california are kicking up the wildfire danger there. red flag warnings are likely to remain in effect until tonight. an out of control blaze on kimball island is about 50 acres in size, it has already destroyed one structure.

and it's now threatening homes in the area. a small fire near the pacific coast highway near los angeles snarled traffic for hours on tuesday. an unusual attack lands guatemala's vice president in the hospital. this was all caught on camera. roxana baldetti was walking up some stairs when a woman suddenly threw flour on her. it covered her face and her clothes. she was taken to the hospital after reporting breathing difficulties. at least two women were arrested. the reason behind the attack is still unclear. well, now to an incredible story of sisterly love and our countdown to sochi, 22 days until the olympics games. american tracy barnes has already inspired americans by something she's done away from the field of competition. tracy is giving up her spot on the u.s. biathlon team to her twin sister and training partner lanny barnes. because of illness, she missed most of the selection races over the weekend.

incident that took place here. this couple says they also had a run-in with him that happened at the same movie theater that it happened two weeks ago and also involved texting. 71-year-old retired police captain curtis reeves was ordered to wear a protective vest for his court appearance tuesday. he's accused of second-degree murder in the shooting and killing of a man who was texting in a movie theater. >> the evidence of guilt is significant. >> reporter: the victim, 43-year-old chad oulson was a married father of a 3-year-old daughter and a navy veteran deployed during operation desert storm. >> it was kind -- he was kind of crazy, goofy guy, kind of onrey, but he was a good guy. >> reeves had a spotless career as a police officer and served

as director of busch gardens and served in his local crimestoppers program. his attorney says he was defending himself. >> the alleged victim attacked him, struck him with an object, which resulted in the gunfire. >> jumera and michael dixon say they had a confrontation with the same man at the same movie theater back in december. dixon told reporters tuesday that she was texting. and he became just upset about the whole situation and started giving us dirty looks. he gets up, he's like, can you do me a favor, can you please just stop texting. jumera says, it could have been us. off-duty sumpter county officer alan hamilton is being hailed a hero for running toward the gunfire and disarming reeves. >> you don't shoot somebody over a texting incident. >> reporter: both the sheriff's department and the state attorneys office investigating the scene right here at the movie theater say they do not believe that florida's controversial stand your ground

♪ we're back at 8:12 with "what's trending today." and here's one trending, you know the saying, there's an app for that? how about this one, it's unbelievable. it's the plastic surgery type app that launched last week. and it's listed for users as young as 9 years old. here's what the app description reads on itunes. this unfortunate girl has so much extra weight that no diet can help her. in our clinic, she can go through a surgery called liposuction that will make her slim and beautiful. the users can then go in with a needle and perform liposuction. word spread quickly about this one online, sparked a lot of outrageous. apple has since pulled the app from itunes saying it has violated their guidelines.

from los angeles up to lake tahoe extreme drought, and it's just going to get worse. and why has it been like this? well, the normal weather pattern, the jet stream dips down to the south, comes across california, bringing storms and snow. that brings the moisture they need. however, this year, there's been this big, blocking high pressure system, jet stream's up to the north, and so they have gotten no rain, i mean, very little rain. in fact, july 1st through today, burbank should have 6 1/3 inches of rain, los angeles over 5 3/4 inches of rain, but look at that, almost nothing between long beach, los angeles and riverside. and you go to the north where the fertile parts of california are, where they've got a lot of crops. they should have upwards of 18 inches of rain in santa rosa, mercer getting over 5 inches. and again, just no rain in sight. it just continues. and so, we've got a high fire threat today, and it has been continuing, gusts to 60 miles per hour in the mountains, high fire danger. plus, again, record warmth

you know, it's that time of you know, it's that time of year, your kids are home from school, your co-workers start going out one by one. now the flu season is at its peak. >> it is. according to the cdc, widespread activity in 35 states now. >> wow. >> seven confirmed deaths in california. illinois's department of public health reports ten deaths in that state. and texas, specifically dallas county, there have been as many as 26 deaths. >> it can be frightening. the h1n1 strain is most prevalent this season, and here with the flu facts is dr. carrie bieberson. good morning. >> good morning. >> why is it this flu in particular we're seeing is hitting harder younger and middle-aged people, rather than the elderly and, you know, the very young? >> the reason is that the h1n1 is the predominant strain we're seeing this year, about 90% of

the cases are h1n1, and it more commonly hits youpger and middle-aged peopler rather than the elderly. the reason for this is if you were born before 1957, there was a similar strain to the h1n1, so those people may have protective immunity already. >> i think people watching at home hear h1n1 and think of swine flu a few years ago. difference from that, because that was a pandemic? >> no, it's the same strain as in 2009. the reason we're not as concerned is because it is in the vaccine this year, whereas in '09 it was not. >> speaking of the vaccine, there is the flu shot. is it too late to get that, to be protected now? >> absolutely not. it is not too late to get the flu shot. i would say it is a call to action to get the flu shot for anyone 6 months of age and older, if you haven't already, get it. >> are there people who shouldn't get the flu shot, though? i know people who have egg allergies sometimes say i don't get the flu shot because i may have a reaction. >> the contraindications are not egg allergies anymore. there is a vaccine available for

another type "a" strain and type "b" strain. there's one shot with three strains and one with four strains. >> if you had the flu already this season but yet did not get the flu shot, is it advisable to go in now and get the flu shot, as well? can you still get the flu? >> that's a great question. many people think i got the flu, i don't need it. but you don't know, necessarily, which strain you had and you're still susceptible to the others. you should get the flu shot but wait until you're better. >> right. >> if you're laid up in bed, carrie, got all those symptoms with the blue. at what point do you need to see a doctor? >> this is very, very important. >> there are certain groups of people that are at risk of complications of the flu. and these people need to call their doctor immediately. it's a large group, you can find it on the cdc, but to name a few, kids under 2 years of age, adults over 65, pregnant women, people who are immuno compromised, heart disease, obese, and alaskan and native indians are at high risk of

complications. they have to call their doctor right away. >> if you feel it coming on, call the doctor. >> and it comes on fast and furious. you probably will suspect it. within three to six hours, high fevers, headaches, severe body aches, cough, sore throat. feels like you got hit by a truck. >> and unfortunately, they end up in the hospital or often fatal cases. >> that is a potential complication. >> perhaps not related, but the fda has a new recommendation about acediminifin. >> correct. recommendations to physicians to not prescribe combination medication that contains more than 325 milligrams of acediminifin. there are some with higher doses than that. the reason for this, it's been found to be linked to fatal cases of liver disease, liver damage, liver failure and death. nearly half of all cases of liver failure are now attributed to the inadvertent overdose of these prescription medications. >> over the counter, the acce acediminifin is about 200

taking a look at the headlines. efforts to extend jobless benefits to more than 1 million americans have stalled in the senate. senators voted 55-45 in favor of extending benefits for the long-term unemployed short of the 60 votes, though, that were needed. the white house called the vote disappointing. benefits ran out last month for more than 1.3 million americans. a new study suggesting that women should be screened for cervical cancer well into their 60s. the british study found that women older than 50 who are not screened are six times more likely to be eventually diagnosed with cervical cancer than those who are screened regularly. they say screening is beneficial up to the age of 69 and saves lives. the cdc currently recommends stopping checks for cervical cancer at the age of 65. meantime, a new study finds maryland to be the millionaires state. the state with the highest
