good friday morning. it's 4:30. i'm terry mcsweeney. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. the breaking news happening now in san francisco. crews are battling a house fire. the fire is burning on apollo street near thornton avenue. >> christie smith arrived on the scene. you are hearing a family had to jump from windows to escape the flames. >> reporter: good morning to you. that's exactly right. what a night for this family in the home. flames moved so quickly we're told they had to jump out of the window. two went out of a window, one was able to make it out of the door, this at a home midway up the block. there are firefighters up and down the street blocking it. three adults involved.
4:31 am
i spoke with san francisco fire and they tell me when they arrived this fire was going really good and the residents had made it outside of the building. this is actually a cottage that burned in the back of a long driveway. there is a home in the front and one in the back. a single alarm fire, what firefighters tell us is that they don't know exactly where it started inside the home but it spread quickly. and their initial report was actually that three buildings were on fire with people inside. that wasn't the case. it was one and there was concern it could spread because as you know the homes in san francisco are so close together. we did see neighbors a couple minutes ago walking back up the block in pajamas looking rattled. they tell us that they woke up and huge flames were pouring from outside of the home. no one else hurt in this. the three people in that home suffered from smoke inhalation. two taken to sf general t one more seriously injured taken to
4:32 am
st. francis hospital and told that they suffered smoke inhalation. firefighters tell me that they were all alert and talking when they left, the fire is knocked down. they don't know exactly how it started. they hope to speak with the people inside the home. firefighters tell us they will be here for at least another hour cleaning up. 's gers are on the way. >> great job, thanks very much. >> several families were allowed back into their homes after reportedly a drunk driver crashed into their house and the gas meter. that happened in the 500 block of borregas avenue before 11:00 last night. investigators say the driver slammed into the home, rupturing a gas meter leading officials to evacuate several homes. no one in the home was injured. pg&e shut off the gas and the residents are still without gas. the man accused of lighting several fires in a san jose
4:33 am
neighborhood is expected in court. police say this man, 48-year-old patrick brennan, intentionally set at least 12 fires near downtown over five days. the police sergeant who cracked the case, jason kidwell, says he plugged the information into several data bases and his profile kept coming up. he matched brennan to a sketch and surveillance video. sergeant kidwell also looked at the state arsoni isist registry on it. brennan lived in a trailer a few yards from a church investigators say he set on fire. investigators also believe he started the massive warehouse fire last week on julien street. no one was hurt. >> this is not brennan's first run-in with the law.
4:34 am
in 1995 he was convicted of setting fires in the grand canyon, four years after he was linked to fires and campbell police confirm he was on the arson registry when he moved there between 1995-99. also a registered sex offender. the megan's law website says he was i convicted of intent to commit a sex offense. technology may have led police to brennan. people in the neighborhood turned to next door.com posting sketches and surveillance video. >> it definitely helps and i think it helped more with safety, to let the neighbors and residents know that don't come outside, you know, if it's not safe. to keep an eye out. >> next door.com based in san francisco is a social media site for neighborhoods. think of it as kind of like an
4:35 am
online bulletin board to discuss issues in their area. >> we keep an eye on a story out of southern california, firefighters are slowly making progress on this wildfire 25 miles east of l.a., officials say the flames are no longer spreading but that could change with the threat of santa ana winds so. far five homes are destroyed, 4,000 people still out of their homes at this hour. >> so thick that you couldn't see where to go out of, really, you knew where your house was but it was so thick i couldn't see which way the street was. >> it happened so fast. it went so quick. it was like get out. >> the fire is 30% contained. still no word on whether charges will be filed against three men arrested for allegedly sparking the fire. one of the men admitted their ellegal camp fire could be to blame. >> after hearing that this should not be a surprise. a stern warning from the fire department as a threat of wild fires increases. the department is urging all
4:36 am
residents especially those in the hills of redwood city, san carlos and other areas to get rid of brush and tall grass. clearing a space at least 30 feet from homes or property lines greatly reduces the risk of wild fires destroying homes. >> a matter of hours governor brown is expected to declare a drought emergency in this part of northern california. that hasn't happened here since 1992. this has been one of the driest periods on record. yesterday alameda, santa clara and contra costa county received special drought designations that allow some farmers to apply for federal emergency loans. in marin the water district started pumping from two reserve reservoirs hoping to get enough to last until the next major rainfall. >> i guess the next question is when is that next even minor rainfall? christina loren now with a look at that. >> next thursday. naught on the table.
4:37 am
