5:00 am
the unusually dry pattern at least for the next five days. we have a slight chance for rain. we'll get into that in your full forecast. >> friday morning commute, it's getting started. we'll show you where you have slowing in the tri-valley coming up. >> 49ers could be responsible for extra traffic on your drive home from work. >> taking a live look outside this morning. the beautiful span of the bay bridge. you made to the friday morning, january 17th, this is "today in the bay." >> a very good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm terry mcsweeney. an update to breaking news in san francisco, a family had to jump out of a window to escape the flames of their house fire. it broke out near the bay view district on apollo street near thornton avenue. christie smith is there, it was a scary scene this morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning
5:01 am
to you. imagine waking up to find your house on fire. that happened to one family here, two of them jumped out of the window, one of them was able to make it out of the door but the neighbors say that they heard banging, they got up, they saw the fire, they decided to evacuate too and that's because the homes are so close together here in san francisco. i just spoke with the assistant chief and he tells me initial reports were that three buildings were on fire here overnight. turns out it was one, a small cottage here on apollo at william street. the chief tells me when they got here the flames were pouring from the building but the three people had already made it out. one challenge, though, that there are two houses on this property, the cottage that was burning, that's about 150 feet off of the street in the rear so they had to drag a lot of hose back there. i spoke with a neighbor who saw the fire, said she ran out of her house in her pajamas. >> were you sleeping? >> yeah. we were sleeping.
5:02 am
and my neighbor come and knock door like a fire and i came out so i saw the fire already spread. we just ran out. that's it. >> reporter: new information for you, initially it was just thought that one family in the home that burned was affected. now i'm told that the red cross has been called out to help at least one other family, a neighbor because the homes are tied together on the electrical grid so another house has no power so. the red cross is helping them. the three people in that home that burned, they were taken to different hospitals, all suffering from smoke inhalation. one of them more seriously. i'm told they were all alert and talking when they left. firefighters still don't know how this started but investigators are on the way. >> thanks very much. governor brown will make a major announcement today. many speculate he will declare a drought emergency.
5:03 am
it hasn't happened since 1992. it's one of the driest periods on record in california, many reservoirs are depleted. yesterday alameda, santa clara and contra costa counties received special designation that allows some farmers to apply for federal emergency loans. in marin the water district started pumping from its first of two reserve reservoirs hoping to get enough water until the next major rainfall. why we're not seeing as much rain as we normally would see this time of year let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. >> hey, good morning to you. it has everything to do with the jet stream and the storm track. you can see here this big ridge of high pressure has been anchored over the western portion of the united states. for the past few months which is why we haven't had significant rainfall. you can see the storm track going well into canada. they are getting the clipper systems and that deep cold on the east coast. we have high pressure in the extreme opposite here. it's interesting how our earth
5:04 am
is trying to come to equilibrium. this has been the case for the past few months as we talked about and just yesterday we were boosted up from a severe drought to an extreme drought so 63% of the state extreme, reservoirs at one third of their capacity. and this is something we're going to talk about at least for the next few months. there is a slight chance in our forecast, i'll talk about that. i'll send it back to you, terry and laura. >> we continue to keep an eye on a developing story out of southern california. firefighters are slowly making progress on this wildfire burning about 25 miles east of los angeles. fire officials say the flames are no longer spreading but that could change in a hurry with a threat of santa ana winds. five homes are destroyed and nearly 4,000 people still out of homes at this hour. one of the homes that burned the singer mansion from the singer
5:05 am
sewing machine family. the fire is 30% contained. no word whether charges will be filed against three men for allegedly sparking the fire. one of the men admitted their ellegal camp fire could be to blame. the man accused of setting fires in a neighborhood is expected in court. police say patrick brennan intentionally set at least 12 fires over the course of five days. the sergeant who cracked the case jason kidwell says he plugged the information into several data bases and brennan's profile kept coming up as a possible match. kidwell matched bren tune a stretch and surveillance video. for the past months brennan lived in a trailer a few yards from a church investigators say he set on fire. >> new this morning it's a scary scene in one neighborhood after a car smashed into a tomorrow damaging a gas meter. peggy bunker joins us live where neighbors were given the all clear to return to their homes.
5:06 am
>> reporter: yes. good news there. we'll get to that. but imagine it's about 11:00 at night, you've gone to bed when out of the blue a car smashes right into your bedroom. that was the scene last night in sunnyvale. look at the scene from last night after a green suv plowed right into the side of this house. shee shearing off the gas meter. cutting off the gas line. you can see on the road here some of the skid marks which sort of indicate the speed of how quickly this car was going. it was speeding down the road, sort of veers to the left and over the line and bam, right into the house. immediately there was a sense of gas in the air. houses around this house were evacuated while they brought in pg&e, also the police and fire departments to make sure that the situation was safe. take a listen to lieutenant tim
5:07 am
ahern. >> it took out the corner of the house. it was at the angle it was not in the house, then we had the tow truck remove it out. >> reporter: back here live at the scene, take a look at the house this morning. the homeowner apparently refused to go to the hospital. there were minor injuries she sustained. right now a 52-year-old man is in custody for dui, we understand he is in police custody at this time. we have one report from neighbors that he was quite argumentative with police before being arrested here on scene for dui. the homeowner went back inside, apparently went back to sleep though it's got to be chilly. according to pg&e they did shut down the gas for the one house due to safety precautions and apparently it's not turned back on so they chose to go back to bed. you can see the windows boarded up as they continue to get the damage there taken care of and the gas probably turned back on today. 52-year-old man in custody for
5:08 am
suspected dui and we'll follow this. imagine that night for that homeowner. >> i can't imagine waking up that way. thanks so much. now to the 49ers and their quest for six. two days and counting until the 49ers and seahawks square off with a trip to the super bowl on the line. playoff fever spreading as well. >> bob is live in santa clara with how the team could impact your drive home from work. >> reporter: good morning. yes, that could happen as the team is heading off to seattle but before that happens they are going to have a round of practice here at the training facility in santa clara and then as they head north over san francisco, the players could look out the the window and catch a glimpse of this, sf city hall glowing and red and gold. chris in san jose, in a few hours, he will create around 65 of his popular chris combo
5:09 am
sandwiches for the team. these have become a tradition this season pretty much every time the team hits the road. one of the coaches turned a few of the players on to them and again, around 65 sandwiches, not sure how many players will be doubling or tripling up on those. not sure if it's 65 people or 30 or who knows. when the niners grab those and hit the road there could be a traffic mess. a handful of team buses to 880 south, likely exiting coleman to get to the airport for their flight. for security reason there is will be police escorts. they are expected to shut down the freeway near 101 and the 880 interchange, again, that could impact your drive home briefly. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> it's all for a distinguish cause. >> of course. our 9ers. got to cheer them on. later today 9ers take off from
5:10 am
the santa clara headquarters. >> as they gear up for the game the seahawks will be out on the practice field in seattle where andrea joins us with a look at a high profile player who could be missing in action. >> reporter: percy harvin was missing from practice trying to get clearance after suffering a concussion in the game against the saints. at this point the seahawks wide receivers are prepare forge the possibility that harvin will not play on sunday. >> we -- i think we're fine without him. we handled it just right and we've handled our business, we won our games, made the big plays, obviously want him on the field, we feel like he gives a better chance to win but the show must go on. we can't -- because we don't have him, so i think our receiver group, we're prepared to up our load even more and do more for this offense.
5:11 am
>> it's tough because we're all close to percy, we all love him as a teammate and as a person so it hurts us to not have him on the field because we know how badly he wants to be on the field. but i think like we've consistently said we've got guys around russell, weapons on the outside that can make plays and making plays all season long. i don't think it's so much of a hit on production wise. i just think that we would love to have him because he adds another element to the offense. >> reporter: pete carroll says his status is in the hands of the doctor f. he is a no go doug baldwin will fill in returning kicks. >> thanks so much. be sure to join us tomorrow night for a 49ers special. we'll break down the match-up, joined by our nfl insiders. tomorrow 6:30 here on nbc bay area. >> i got a terrible vision here.
5:12 am
looks like christina loren has gone to seattle on us. she is standing in the stadium. come back. >> they need help. the 12th man out there. i'll be the the one weather girl out there. temperatures are going to be mild in seattle. it's going to feel like the norm in san francisco for our boys on sunday. that's kind of good news. we're not expecting rain even in seattle with that storm track well into canada. 45 degrees at 5:00. we'll see clouds and cool temperatures. i don't think the winds will be strong enough to influence the passing game. temperatures in the 70s for today, 74 in san francisco, 76 in the east bay, and 77 degrees in the south bay. director is a big seahawks fan. near record warmth. through saturday beach weather continues and big waves. we're talking 8 to 12-footers by

5:28 am
5:29 am
a family jumps to safety after waking up to an early morning house fire. good morning everyone. thanks for joining us. it is friday, i'm terry mcsweeney. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. it happened in the bay view district. christie smith near the corner of apollo and thornton avenue. we understand the red cross is coming out to help some of the people displaced by the fire. >> reporter: yeah, they were helping one of the neighbors because these properties, the one that burned was connected to two others so that knocked out the electricity to all three of the units. i do have new information for you. initially firefighters told us that there were three people in the home that burned that had to escape. now they are telling us there were four people inside, three had to jump out of windows
5:30 am
including one elderly man in his 70s, and we're talking about a 10 to 12-foot jump out of that window. we did get a look at the cottage that caught fire. as firefighters are now doing over haul on it. we're told that the family inside woke up to a fire, this is a mom, a dad, adult son and a friend who was staying with them. really had little time to react because of the fire moved so quickly. so again, three of them had to go right out of windows. when firefighters arrived they tell us that everyone inside of that unit was already outside but one of the difficulties that they had was that this cottage is actually about 150 feet off the street. there are a number of units on this one property. neighbors also evacuated on their own. everyone of the neighbors, they are all safe and accounted for but the three people w.h.o. who jumped out of the window suffered smoke inhalation. they were hospitalized. one more seriously but

firefighters tell us that they were alert an talking when they left. at this point they don't know exactly what started it but investigators are on scene. christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. >> governor brown could make official today what we already know, by declaring a drought emergency. the governor's expected to make a major announcement in san francisco later this morning and the speculation is he is going to declare a drought emergency, it's something that hasn't happened since 1992 and it's more of a public relations move increasing awareness of how dry the state of california is. it could also open the door to more federal funding. many reservoirs depleted and counties are forced to tap into reserves. might help with that. >> christina tells us a hint, a hint of rain may be coming our way. >> yeah. a cutoff low. what's going to happen when you talk about a cute off low it detaches from the jet stream. the jet stream has everything to do with our drought. that storm track way to our north. all of the rain is heading into
5:32 am
canada and alaska, getting hammered as a matter of fact. we are seeing the extreme opposite, dry conditions, record warmth and that will be the case not just for this week. looks like this weekend will stay dry, then a slight chance for rain. when that storm system detaches from the jet stream and tries to skirt the coastline i'll show you how that looks in my next report. just yesterday they updwraded us from a severe drought to extreme drought. 63% of the state in that extreme drought. we'll have more on this and the chance of rain. i'm going to send it back to you. actually mike inouye. >> i was doing some business with the cameras. look how quick our crew s. a shot of camera 168. our new one. looking at westbound 580, that's what numbers you care b. you approach the shopping center there in livermore, dublin area. dublin.
5:33 am
there is the traffic starting to build westbound 580 out of the altamont pass. you see a slower drive into the area out of livermore, and in toward dublin. jamming up around the dublin interchange. a report of a car hit with a lot of travel and more trucks reported seen spilling gravel down to bernell. now the latest report is for more trucks off the 680/84 and up the hill through sunol and dropping more gravel. watch that. there may be traffic breaks. they might have to get a sweeper truck. chp is concerned about notifying the trucks. there are a number of cars including down to the south bay. a lighter flow of commute so not major slowdown. showing the build here. palo alto, we see a nice easy drive northbound 101 past university avenue no. problems in toward san francisco. now back to you.
5:34 am
>> thanks so much. new this morning gas is still off at one home after reportedly a drunk driver slammed into it and a gas meter. it happened in sunnyvale not far from ma titilda avenue. peggy bunker has been investigating the crash. she'll have a live report coming up at 6:00. the man accused of lighting several fires in a san jose neighborhood is expected in court. police say this man, 48-year-old patrick brennan, intentionally set at least 12 fires near downtown over five days. the police sergeant who cracked the case said he plugged the suspect's information into several data bases last sunday and brennan's profile kept coming up as a possible match. he matched bren tune a sketch and surveillance video. investigators say brennan lived in a trailer a few yards from a search investigators say he set on fire.
