anybody on the ground making it okay for you and the firefighters as well on the ground. >> reporter: it's really interesting because the different trucks have set up kind of in a quadrant around the area. and the smoke luckily it's almost a similar situation to san jose where it seems to be shooting straight up. there a lot of matter into the sky. i don't see it coming back down so. if you were driving south on 101 that's the way that the smoke boom is going. luckily it's not falling back down on the ground because here on the ground and the entire square block area, the firefighters are not having a problem with burning debris. it is shoesing this up in the air. they are running like you would not believe. tackling. from the side, from the street and also with the ladder hoses. >> amazing as well to see all of
6:52 am
the other buildings that are pretty close in there as well. do those look threatened at all? >> i think that's obviously their first concern when they get to a situation like this. they are concerned about it spreading. there are lots of neighbors and maybe people involved with the businesses on the street looking concerned. we just got here so we witness had a chance to chat with people but a lot of people on the street checking out the building. it doesn't look like the way, the angle i'm at. it doesn't seem to be spreading to businesses or buildings. >> what we're seeing from these aerial shots, is some amazing flames, also sudden bursts of new thick black smoke. so it seems that something else new is catching on fire. wow. intense flames right there as you can see the fire coming down. >> it is burning hot, burning fast, we've seen it grow in the

past hour. it's burning for about an hour. but it's the four-alarm fire. crews have it surrounded from above trying to tackle it. let's check in with christina. we were worried about a threat of wind. >> no wind means nothing to fan that smoke. it's going to go straight up. unfortunately this part of town you want to close up your window. you don't want to be breathing in that smoke if you are waking up in red wootd city, close the windows in your home, in your car. through this neighborhood what i can tell you is we don't have significant wind. it's been very dry. the temperature in redwood city about 44 degrees. relative humidity about 80%. you can see the wind is not driving the fire. it's a good news bad news deal. back to you, terry and laura. >> we'll continue to keep it live on these pictures because

the chapper gives us the bird's eye look. it is happening once again on douglas avenue not far from bay road, woodside avenue. it broke out about an hour ago and it is now grown to four alarms. an idea you can see it off 101 this morning, it's close to the silver springs. i want to check with mike. not only a distraction on 101 but some of the surface streets are highly traveled. >> woodside road a couple blocks north and west of 101. sow see all of these flames and the smoke. we have a camera in palo alto. from that we can see what the view is from 101. the haze and the smoke has blended in with the haze. you can barely make out what is.

6:57 am
5:00 this morning, saw flames, nobody was there at the time so they called 911. i said what sort of things are flammable. you've got the solvents, the metals for machining, many things that are combustible. wasn't aware until i saw this woman looking for her husband that there are residential apartme apartments. >> she's looking for her husband but the word is everyone has been safely evacuated. right? >> reporter: he says as far as he knows everybody was evacuated in time. >> the confusion of he got out, she got out and who knows where they went. >> exactly, red cross will be headed to the scene. it is a massive fire that is burning there. we've seen red wood city fire.
6:58 am
this continues to burn. there is no chance of going in it at all. just fight it from afar. >> that's the aerial look now. it looks incredible. if we go back to the ground it looks like a different situation. apparently the fire that's burning all of the flames are inside like bowl. >> exactly. look at that thick black smoke. we're not seeing evidence of white smoke at all that shows that it's dying down. stay away from the area if you are close to it you can tell it, keep your windows closed. bay road, but you can see it from 101. are we seeing slowing when it comes to traffic. >> i want to throw this on you, from the 101 area north you can't really make out the smoke because there is so much haze in the air. right center where we saw the
6:59 am
plume of smoke you can't make that out. i'm going to do a jerky camera move. 101 north out of palo alto. we lost the camera. out of palo alto. traffic moves smoothly so far. >> that's good. so far not a problem. we know redwood city fire will keep up their efforts. we'll keep our eyes on what is going on. a fire at fmw machine shop having a lot of solvents, a lot of welding materials. look at the flames leap out of this building. it's on douglas avenue. >> meggy was eling us that four apartments turned. the good news is according to officials they believe everybody who lived in that apartment has gotten out. there is a woman looking for her husband. hopefully she will be reunited with him.
