hello. welcome back. good to see you. we like the deal with the concept of this movie. this guy has got to survive 24 hours on a ride along with you. if he can make it through that, he gets to marry your sister? >> like "training day" but turning it on its ear. we have a lot of fun with the movie. i play an undercover cop and, you know, i got this little mosquito bite named kevin hart, bugging me, and he wants to marry my sister and be a cop. this is the perfect time to take him on a ride along, try to scare all the dreams out of him. >> does she want to marry him too? >> yeah, she wants to marry him. but they need my blessing because i've been her guardian, you know what i mean, all these years and i'm very overprotective on this real deep undercover case trying to take down the kingpin of atlanta. the last thing i need is kevin hart. >> you play the straight man. you have an incredible chemistry, i have to say. have you worked together a lot in the past? >> we never worked together
2:50 am
before. we had instant chemistry. it was weird because with the other actors, i've done a lot of movies with comedians, you have to ramp up to it. >> get a rhythm going. >> yes. but with us, even on the phone, talking about the movie, we were, like, falling into character. >> you play the straight man, and you just give him looks throughout, like, just dirty -- just like a look of disdain. >> take your seconds off for one second and give us the look. >> you want to see? >> oh, yeah. >> i see the look. >> and there are a lot of these kind of buddy cop movies out there. and you always want yours to stand out. what did you think makes yours a little more unique? >> we know the upper echelon of movies is, like, "48 hours," "lethal weapon," "bad boys," "rush hour," and we wanted to be in that stratosphere, no doubt. and our -- i think what is unique about it is we have a gaming aspect, because kevin's character say gamer.

and he thinks that because he's great at the game, that it will translate into real life. he thinks that, you know, if you dropped him off in fallujah, he would be able to take care of himself. >> take care of al qaeda once and for all. >> with a joy stick and some skittles or something. >> we do need to have a little self-confidence in life. you're one of the producers on this. you have your -- you have an invested interest too. >> no doubt. this movie has been on the shelf for about ten years. until will packer, another producer, tim story, who directed me in "barbershop," jumped on and then they showed it to kevin hart. and once we had this dream team together -- >> it starts falling into place. >> we're going to play a couple of quick questions, we do something called spin the bottle. these are questions for you. >> let's see where it lands. nobody knows. okay. right here. >> how convenient.
2:52 am
what is your favorite drink on ice? >> oh, man. favorite drink on ice, i got to say kool-aid. you know -- >> oh. >> kool-aid. >> time for one more? one more. another one. oh, me again. let's see what it says. what can someone expect to find in your ice box? freezer at home. >> a lot of coors light. you know, just food, a gang of food. i love -- i'm a pizza man. i love pastrami and, you know. >> real food. >> real food, yeah. >> don't give you a lentil on a plate. >> no, i don't want none of that. got to be down home food. >> good luck. >> you're always such a joy to have here. thanks so much. >> "ride along" opens today at a theater near you. >> and the performance we have been talking about by jennifer nettles. >> but first this is "today" on nbc.
