shore. >> in all, about 4,400 flights have been canceled coast to coast because of this storm. and across the east, people are waking up to temperatures that have fallen more than 30 degrees overnight. as we said, sam, al and dylan have it all covered. dylan dreyer is up in hard hit sandwich, massachusetts up on cape cod. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. and here on the cape, we are seeing not only really heavy snow, but also wind gusts at 40 to 50 miles per hour. and this light fluffy snow just blows and drifts all over the place reducing visibility to at times zero. now, these whiteout conditions have already hit hard parts of the midwest and mid-atlantic. and we are going to see this continue around here throughout the next couple of hours making a mess of the air and also, especially on the roads. >> deep freeze, double-header. the second massive storm of the season buried much of the country overnight followed up by

subfreezing temperatures lasting through the weekend. like 2014's first blizzard, new england was hit hard, more than a foot of snow piling up in some parts of massachusetts. but places like philadelphia, long island and chicago didn't fare much better. >> we're stuck in it pretty good. >> outside of louisville, kentucky parts of the highway were shutdown after traffic conditions were considered too hazardous for travel. while the weather also got the better of drivers in indiana. west virginia -- >> i had no problems all the way down the road until i got here and it just wasn't nothing i could do. >> reporter: and new york city where a taxi took to a sidewalk to get around a snowed in truck blocking the street. conditions so severe in new york that one of the glass panels at apple's iconic cube store shattered with images posted on social media overnight. airports were also inundated

with thousands of flights canceled across the country. in washington, d.c. where 8 inches of snow fell, the federal government was shut down. visiting school children had to brave the conditions outside the capitol building. while a little closer to home, some kids were able to enjoy the weather. our viewers sharing some of their favorite pics on the "today" facebook page with the #todaysnow. the arctic cold today and the days to come is an offshoot of that dreaded polar vortex. which wreaked havoc a few weeks ago. and with two months of winter still to come, we probably haven't seen the last of conditions like these. >> reporter: and we are still looking at perhaps up to another 6 inches here on cape cod. but where the snow has already ended in some of the hardest hit areas, now the arctic blast is moving in. we are going to see temperatures in the teens and 20s with windchills at or below zero up until the weekend. matt and savannah. >> dylan dreyer, thanks very much. >> you've seen a lot of reporters out there with their rulers or yardsticks to get the

snow totals. we've got al roker with the official word. >> records falling back and forth up and down the eastern seaboard. d.c. with 3.8, baltimore, 5.3. philadelphia, 13 1/2, first time they've had three 6 plus inches of snow before february 1st. and here's the snow right now, dylan still in it. it's going to hang out. bring at least another 3 to 6 inches from south of boston all the way down to nantucket. and much colder weather coming in here. as we were talking about the polar vortex. this is not the main branch of it. it basically right now makes its way down south, we've got the jet stream down there. this is a piece of the polar vortex that's going to push these cold temperatures on in here. as it does, look at these windchills, 28 below it'll feel like in chicago, 6 above in

pittsburgh, new york it feels like 3, and then during the day tomorrow or this afternoon, 4 in new york city, cleveland, 9 below, feels like 43 below down in minneapolis, and it even gets down south. look at this, right now for today, atlanta, 32 a windchill of 18. that's where we find my good friend and my weather channel colleague sam champion. and those rosy cheeks and nose i don't think has anything to do with rouge. >> reporter: al, frozen, not rosy. you know this area, centennial olympic park, we here in atlanta cool off in the water that is now shut down in these colder temperatures. we've got the windchills down in the deep south. and let's go over that again. al just showed you, talking about that arctic express for lack of a better expression. look at the east coast and the west coast, everything you see green there is all warm and happy. but on the eastern seaboard, we're dropping these temperatures. al showed you that 39 degrees in

atlanta on wednesday, 64 in miami, barely getting into the 60s even in the deep south. they're a hard freeze. watches and warnings out for the gulf coast into florida, as well. those temperatures are cold. if you look later on in the week and you may think there's a warm-up coming, there isn't. reinforcing shots of cold air coming through here. and that means ahead of each shot, you might get a chance to warm up, maybe 73 in miami on sunday, but i really see, al, and i think you do, too, this opportunity for the cold air to get in here and stay in here for a while. >> sam, thank you so much. we'll check in with you in a little bit. let's go to duxbury, massachusetts. they're driving there live. and you can see what this is like on the east end of massachusetts. it is rough going, slow going, it's a tough slog. and because this is such a light, fluffy snow. we're talking about snow generally 1 to 10 inches usually for the ratio. this is 15 to 20 inches of snow for every 1 inch of precipitation. and we're going to have more clippers coming across.

that means more snow. and not to be ominous, guys, but coming up on super bowl sunday, talk about a nexus, groundhogs's day and the super bowl. >> on the same day. >> they're going to play the third quarter six or seven times. >> exactly. >> al, thanks. you showed us how hard traffic is. well, guess what, crippled airports across the region because of this storm. nbc's tom costello in washington this morning. tom, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. freezing here, we're well below zero. this is recovery day at this airport and across the country as all of these planes, many of which were out of position yesterday because of the storm, they now try to move back in a position today. let's get you the latest on the cancellations. so far today, 1,400 flight cancellations, then we have 3,000 yesterday. so that combined 4,400 number. now they've got to recover or start to recover from that. we're not even talking about the delays yet. as you can imagine, those would snowball.

pardon the pun. inside the airports, virtual ghost town yesterday, flights canceled up and down the eastern seaboard. today, the challenge is to get all of those airports and passengers to where they need to be. we're talking boston-logan, connecticut and the new york city airports, washington reagan, washington national and washington dulles, all of those will be airports struggling to get back up to speed today and a big de-icing day as you might expect. amtrak picked up slack. their trains were not effected. but today, modified service on the northeast corridor. so folks trying to get by on amtrak may be seeing a little bit of a slower day today. and then on the roads, you saw all those terrible roads. interestingly, you know, the salt they put down on the roads that really only works until you get about to 15 degrees. below that, it doesn't work very well. as a result, they have to switch to kind of a chemical mix. that's going to be the challenge today. back to you. >> stay home and snuggly if you

can. thank you so much. meanwhile, another day and another threat to the winter olympic games. several delegations have reportedly received letters vowing terror attacks and to keep their teams at home. nbc's richard engel made his way to sochi. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. nbc news confirmed two delegations, hungary and germany received the threatening letters. they came in e-mail in english. saying that the athletes should stay away from the game. they are not considered credible. no one is in a panic. olympic officials are saying they were sent by a private individual. that does not mean they are not taken seriously. u.s. officials say the terror threat in sochi is the highest of any olympics. yet, russia isn't cooperating

much with the u.s. about it. vladimir putin, president and former kgb chief says russia can handle it. >> certainly vladimir putin's past history, the long cold war history between the united states and russia make any likelihood of request before the games or catastrophically after an event far less likely in this case. >> reporter: but the u.s. is taking some precautions on its own. a small number of fbi and state department security officials will be on hand. mostly to protect the american delegation. and two u.s. warships will be positioned in the black sea in case americans need to be evacuated. but experts doubt russia would ever ask them to intervene. >> there's too much bad blood, too much mistrust between the security services for them to link arms and say we're going to work on this together. >> reporter: but that may be changing. russia's top general asked

martin dempsey was asked for sophisticated sensors from the u.s. if they are sent, u.s. military personnel would have to go along with them. the terror threat in russia comes mainly from the caucuses, from suicide bombers, including women known as black widows. russia is on the hunt for at least five suspected bombers, two men and three black widows. yet, most u.s. team members like snowboarder kelly clark says they're not worried. >> i'm not worried about any safety issues in russia at this point. and, you know, we're so focused on our competition and on our sport. >> they did discuss security. very few specific details have been released with president obama and putin. the games are totally safe and putin promised they would be the safest games ever. now, however, we are seeing something of a recognition that

russia might need help. here inside the ring of steel, this is the secure area where the main stadiums are located. security is very tight. every person and bag that comes in here is inspected. matt. we have another school shooting. >> we're learning more details about the suspect in the deadly purdue university shooting. the 23-year-old is being held in the fatal shooting of fellow purdue student andrew boldt. police say cody cousins shot the 21-year-old inside the classroom in the electrical engineering building and gave himself up. purdue officials say the shooting was not a random attack. a warning today from the insurance institute for highway safety, the group is steering people away from mini cars until they're made safer to drive. now, after testing 11 models of mini cars, the chevy spark is the only one that passed getting the acceptable rating.

the other ten were rated marginal or poor in a small overlap test. that replicates what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle. the poor performers in these tests were the honda fit and the fiat 500. suggesting drivers go with a bigger vehicle until the mini cars get safer. new video has emerged of embattled toronto mayor rob ford that shows him slurring his words and trying to talk in a jamaican accent. >> yeah, man. >> okay. so the video comes two months after mayor ford said he'd stopped drinking when reporters asked him about it tuesday night, he admitted he'd been drinking but said it was no one else's business. >> what i do in my personal life, that's up to me. this has nothing to do with you guys. it's my own time, my own friend. >> ford, as you recall, was

stripped of most of his powers last year after he admitted smoking crack cocaine. newly released surveillance video shows the dramatic moments when an suv crashed into a florida popeyes restaurant. take a look at this video. they're next to the window. she sees the suv coming, grabs the child's arm. the incident happened back in december. the woman and 8-year-old boy were injured. but certainly when you see that, it could have been worse. the driver of the suv was initially jailed for driving with a suspended license, but later charged with driving under the influence. all the vantage points there and to know that the woman had the presence of mind to see and process and move is incredible. you always wonder what would you do god forbid something like that happens. >> did the right thing. >> exactly right. >> exactly. mr. roker, the morning forecast. >> lake effect snow to talk about. the lakes have iced over for the

some states have a long tradition of seeing their top officials indicted, but not virginia. bob mcdonnell becomes the first man charged with committing crimes in the virginia governor's office. but he says he did nothing illegal. >> reporter: in response to the charges, bob mcdonnell describes himself this way. >> someone who has been falsely and wrongfully accused. and his public service has been wrongfully attacked. >> reporter: federal prosecutors say governor mcdonnell and his wife maureen asked for and received thousands in money and gifts from a virginia businessman johnny williams, eager for state help in promoting his company's line of dietary supplements. prosecutors say mrs. mcdonnell asked the businessman to take her dress shopping in new york where he spent almost $11,000 at oscar de la renta $5,600 at louis vuitton and $2,000 at high-end retailer bergdorf goodman. she wanted them, court documents say, for her anniversary and daughter's wedding. but prosecutors say two years

later after they started investigating, she sent some of the dresses back to the businessman suggesting they were only loaned and a charity might welcome the chance to auction clothes, quote, worn only once by the first lady of virginia. prosecutors also say she persuaded the businessman to give the mcdonnells a $50,000 loan and pay $15,000 for catering at their daughter's wedding. and the charges say mcdonnell persuaded williams to make a $50,000 loan to a business co-owned by the governor. standing with his wife and daughter, mcdonnell said all of it amounted to personal favors. >> i never promised, and mr. williams and his company never received any government benefit of any kind from me or from my administration. >> mcdonnell also said he repaid all of the loans with interest. he and his wife appear in court friday to face the charges. savannah? >> all right, pete williams in our washington newsroom, thank you. now the powerful storm hitting the east coast is all the talk on social media this

you can see it now just getting off the coast. still now, parts of boston and on into the northeast. we're looking at snow. we're also looking at cold down in atlanta. let's start off with our buddy mike seidel. he's in plymouth, if not technically a blizzard, for all intents and purposes, blizzard conditions. mike? >> reporter: it is. we have winds off the harbor in the atlantic, gusting 35 to 40 miles an hour. this is a powdery snow with temperatures in the teens. the real problem is drifting. basically, bare ground. look at this drift i'm walking through. this is about a two-footer. in town here in plymouth, we have 4 to 5 foot drips. warnings in cape going until 1:00. in plymouth county we've had 15 inches of snow. you throw it up and it blows everywhere. all schools are shut down.

whipper snapper who comes up here and knows nothing? >> reporter: mitt romney's older son tagg, says the film is real, unprecedented window into the family's hard-fought unsuccessful presidential campaign. peter alexander, "today," nbc news, washington. >> good morning to you. presidential campaigns are notoriously locked up. it's hard to get access. somehow you were able to get inside for two presidential campaign on the romney side. pow did you convince them to let you in? >> i'm not sure to this day. back in 2006 i read a blurb in the newspaper that the governor of massachusetts would be getting together with his family to discuss whether or not he should run for the president. something about that sounded like the beginning of a great movie. i reached out. a mutual friend introduced me to tagg romney. pitched him the idea. he said, great. took it to mitt.

mitt said no. ann said yes. he said, if you show up on christmas eve, don't think my dad would throw you out. i packed up my family, drove to park city, stayed with a friend. i knocked on his door christmas eve. mitt romney opened the door, rolled his eyes and i filmed that night and i kept filming for the next six years. >> the family warmly embraced you. you said the staff of the campaign didn't. they really didn't want you inside strategy sessions and that kind of thing. >> right. i didn't take it personally. i think the idea of a candidate being filmed by a documentarian that the campaign had no control over was nerve-racking and anxious. these are guys that are smart. they've been through the battles and wars of electionses past. they've seen elections fail -- or campaigns fail for reasons that are very small. so, they saw me as a large risk. >> much more personal side of mitt romney. the film doesn't get into things like the 47% remark, some of

these issues that were political issues in the campaign. was that by design or a function of the kind of access that you got? >> well, i felt like my strategy in making the film was just to show up, shut up and just film. i asked him about 47%. he just didn't give me an answer that he hadn't already given a hundred other time to reporters and that wasn't the strength of my footage. over six years of filming him, when i was done after the election, i didn't want to just rehash stuff that people had already rehashed. the strength of my footage was these very candid, personal family moments and we strung them together into a 90-minute art. >> what did mitt romney say to you after he saw the film? >> he didn't say anything. even if he d i don't know if i would believe him. he's very polite and gracious.

potomac river. it's 10 below here with the windchill. it's a blue sky day which is good for flights. faa reporting really no airport problems this morning. what airlines are struggling to recover. as a result, the most affected airports today will be, no surprise, boston logan airport, the three airports in the new york area, philadelphia, baltimore, washington's national and dulles airport, and other airlines including -- airports, rather, including chicago, toronto, also being effected by the significant impact from all these airlines canceling flights. about 4,500 now because 1,500 flights canceled for today as well. i just walked through the airport here at reagan national. i would say about 20% of the outbound flights are now canceled just as they try to recover. so, the airlines may have a beautiful blue sky day but they've got to recover now, get their planes back into position. they're still dealing with snow and ice on some of these runways

daughters learn about beauty from their mothers. and i thought, boy, all right, moms, if these daughters of yours are watching you and how you relate to yourself and your own beauty, what do you think they would have learned? >> what i don't like about myself. and intend to share that on a daily basis. >> and you're honest about that surprised you how much harper picked that up. >> i -- doing this was such an eye opener for me. i always thought that i didn't pass any of those insecurities on to harper. in fact, i didn't even know she knew about them until cynthia started asking her and she started rattling off all the things i only thought i knew about myself. and it made me think, you know, moms, you really are passing things on whether you know it or not. >> yeah. it's an interesting question. i'm sure you don't want to hear your mom be down on herself. but did it affect how you see yourself and the criticism you make of yourself?

>> yeah. i think it was really -- it's really difficult for me to see my mom feel uncomfortable about herself, because i think she's just like, you know, my biggest role model and the most beautiful person i know. it's a compliment when people tell me i look like her and her to criticize herself is sort of like indirectly criticizing me because i came from her. and, yeah, so -- >> fascinating insight, actually. and you and your mom talked about in the documentary how your mom pat was saying, why don't you wear a little make-up and you really resisted that. how did they make you feel when she made those kind of suggestions? >> it made me feel small. because i wanted to feel confident without make-up and she was telling me, why don't you wear a little bit? and i didn't want to wear a little bit. and it was hard for me to hear her say that. >> and i know, pat, you said you learned a lot about this from being part of this. i only got about ten seconds

they're doing a little driving out there. look at those roads. snow covered. 17 degrees and it is windy. the snow is stopping, but it's still blowing around out there quite a bit. in fact, as you look on the satellite radar, you'll see we've got the snow blowing around, and where do we find our good pal dylan dreyer? right now, she is in sandwich, massachusetts, and dylan, boy, i've got to tell you, it looks rough out there. >> reporter: and it is rough out here, al. it is cold, windy, but just like you have a small crowd out on the plaza, we have a small crowd of our own here in massachusetts. this one fine gentleman walking his dogs out in the snow and braving the miserable conditions out here. that storm now is intensifying across parts and areas just south of long island. and you can really feel it here on cape cod where we have the wind starting to pick up, gusting at 42, at times 50 miles per hour. and because it's so cold, we have this light, fluffy snow that gets tossed around in the

wind. it reduces visibility, makes it very hard for drivers. and you're not really seeing that many drivers out here right now because everyone is just staying indoors, which is probably the safest place to be. now that north wind once it really starts to get going is actually going to produce ocean-effect snow just like lake-effect snow. and that's going to keep the snow going here on cape cod up through early this afternoon where we could end up with another six inches. it is going to be rough going out on southeastern massachusetts. but elsewhere, we are starting to see some improvements. but the cold is going to be the next story, that arctic blast is with us all the way through the weekend. al? they're getting the really bitter cold. we are getting this unseasonable warmth and it continues. 47 degrees in san francisco. you're at 32 in the north. it feels like winter to start the day but feeling like summer,
