what firefighters found when they went in the house to douse the flames. >> don't let the chilly temperatures fool you. we're on our way to possibly more record breaking highs along with high fire danger in the forecast. a look at that when we come back. >> trying to get to the mavericks, there may be an issue, a problem getting to the competition. we'll show you the traffic coming up. >> and we have a live look outside at san jose. it's friday, january 24th and this is "today in the bay." >> good friday morning. thank you for joining us. i'm peggy bunker in for laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. breaking news for you in cairo. three blasts have gone off each targeting police. the latest struck a police station near the famous pyramids. a car bomb targeted the headquarters damaging the museum of islamic art.

and another explosion hit police cars at a metro station. in all five people have been killed, dozens injured. so far unclear who is responsible for the explosions. the blasts come one day before the third anniversary of the 2011 up rising that toppled hoz me mubarak. >> early this morning protesters broke into the building without facing resistance. yesterday opposition leaders met with the president of the country, the leylanders told the crowd the president promised to release disorders of protesters. the leaders also said that the president promised to stop further detentions of protesters. >> this morning officers in oakland on the hunt for a 14-year-old boy accused of killing his older sister. christie smith joins us from police headquarters with the latest. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott and peggy. such a tragedy for one family.

17-year-old girl, a young mom, lost to gun violence and her younger brother just 14 is suspected of shooting her. i did call the oakland police patrol desk. as far as they know, no one is in custody but police say that mario tolliver shot and killed 17-year-old justice tolliver. that's what they believe, a young mom who leaves behind a 2-year-old daughter. a cousin told thaws the siblings argued in the family's apartment in china town before the shooting yesterday. and the chronicle is reporting that this whole thing may have stemmed from a dispute about justice bleaching his clothes. the cousin said he isn't sure where the 14-year-old got a gun but isn't surprised that the teen had one. >> if he wasn't my family member i wouldn't be surprised if they young kids don't carry guns. that's the nature of what they do and what is at stake in this

day and age, being from here. >> reporter: the family says they want mario to come home or turn himself in. they describe justice as a good mother, a good person who had just started working a new job. >> thank you much. >> new this morning, a new home damaged by a fire. take a look at this. you can see the flames. officials say the home was vacant and somebody was using it to grow marijuana. the home is near california delta highway in pittsburg. the flames were so big at first that firefighters had to call in for backup and fight from the outside of the house because it was too dangerous to go inside. they were able to keep the flames from spreading. the cause of the fire is under investigation. officials say the fire is suspicious. there were no reports of injuries. >> happening now, firefighters still on the scene of a brush fire in san rafael.

pictures that the crews tweeted out. this fire off francisco boulevard and east shoreline parkway, no buildings threatened at this point. >> some of the top surfers in the world will hit the water here locally for the start of the mavericks surf competition. >> this morning team coverage on the so-called super bowl of surfing. meteorologist rob mayeda tracking the waves but we're going to start with bob redell. good morning, bob, who joins us at half moon bay. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott and peggy. pillar point harbor, the place has come alive the past 15, 20 minutes. people showing up, talking about spectators, limited parking, if you look to the right you'll see them coming in frame. looks like a couple of the competitors now going down the pier with their boards to get ready to get on the boat so they can head out. i'm telling you, 24 of some of the gutsiest athletes are going to be leaving this harbor

heading to open sea to do something most of us wouldn't dare. surfing waves the size of buildings. you got to credit the organizers for picking today to hold the competition. there is a high surf advisory with waves that are predicted to be possibly 45 feet tall. 24 surfers, two were hurt during practice. they are going to be replaced. about half of the surfers from local places like santa cruz, pacifica, sf, the other half from hawaii, australia, brazil and south africa. i mentioned hawaii. they are only arriving on 36 hours notice. come beating for cash but for a lot of these guys the price is the trophy and the pride of saying they conquered these monster waves. >> i would say this is close to the lombardi trophy for surfing. it takes everything you know

about the ocean to compete and survive and be successful at mavericks when it's this big. >> reporter: the waves today could possibly be as big as they were back in 2010, that's when several onlookers were injured by sneaker waves. spectators are no longer allowed on the bluffs. it's too dangerous. that's the only place you can see the waves. they break about 100 yards off shore. you can watch on line or if you got the coin and a good friend with a boat hop a ride out there. first at 8:00 this morning. the finals are around 1:30. some of the bravest athletes for sure. >> i'm with bob. call us. we'll go with you. >> no, we won't. i'm not getting on a boat. even out in the ocean like 10

feet waves. >> you want an extra dose of dramamine. that's before you get closer to the coast. the energy slows down and the waves grow. to give you an idea the 40-foot, 30-foot waves like jumping off a four or five-story building and looking down to the face of the wave. no thank you. for the officialers out will we'll see the high surf advisory. the forecast if you are out there and viewing this we'll see the mid-60s. there is a preview to ride a 5 foot wave. turning warmer this weekend. fantastic beach weather. wave heights a little high so use caution this weekend. 60s today. highs in the 70s moving into saturday and sunday. 32 in santa rosa. frosty for the morning to near 70 later on today. the desert climate continues around the bay area. 42 in san jose, 39 in livermore. offshore winds are the problem.

getting above 30 mirp, now the south bay in santa cruz mountain. through mid afternoon. you might notice even in the south bay winds are going to pick up out of the southeast so. a breezy dry day and high clouds drifting by. an upper level low is going to move away from northern california and head to the northwest. high clouds at times over the bay area and as we head into the weekend we'll see high pressure strengthen and the temperatures come up. thursday, wednesday and thursday next week, we'll see numbers closer to mid-70s. today 68 in san jose, close to 70 in morgan hill. in the north bay you're seeing highs in santa rosa, low 70s, we use danville, the trend in the 50s and 60s.

mid 70s approaching by next wednesday. >> it's great. as far as weather goes, we're looking toward the san mateo bridge. between hayward and the peninsula side. we're looking forward the maps and see a report from a chp, they show you 92 moves, so does the dumb parten bridge. pretty typical about this time on a friday. toward half moon bay, 92 around main street i'm hearing about a crash. car on its side a. tow has been called. said please move that because it's a distraction. we saw yellow turn to orange. more heading to see the mavericks, big crowds expected and watch that t tow crew should arrive in the next half hour to clear that. we'll watch for updates but so far nobody on seen. moving to the south bay, northbound routes look pretty

>> we're seeing a chilly start. a live view from san jose. 41 degrees right now. we could approach records closer to 70. the forecast is straight ahead. >> as we look at the bay bridge toll plaza that's light. flow metering lights here. we have a problem for folks right toing to get to the coast to see the mavericks competition. a crash for 580 coming up. >> oakland police searching for a 14-year-old boy accused of shooting and killing his 17-year-old sister. justice tolliver's family found her body in their apartment in the chinatown neighborhood. the family pleading with 14-year-old mario, turn himself

in. >> a suspected marijuana grow house caught fire. firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to other homes. now the fire is out. investigators say the house is vacant. >> a texas family will ask a judge to take a brain dead pregnant woman off life support. the hospital says it can't. it cannot remove the woman from life support because she is pregnant. her husband says his wife told him that if she ever fell into this sort of condition she would not want to be kept alive. >> new video of a fire that destroyed a church in central indiana. you can see here flames and smoke pouring out through the roof. local stations report that fire crews have to truck in water to the scene because it's such a rural location. no reports of injuries. >> an awful tragedy in canada. officials in quebec will spend the day picking through an iced over burned remnant of an elderly care facility. 30 residents are missing.

the facility caught fire yesterday, five people confirmed dead, nine others hurt but the town's mayor says many of the residents in the 52-unit complex were in wheelchairs or used walkers. many had alzheimer's disease. it took firefighters five hours to put out all of the flames. >> and new details about this mess. a massive 40-car pileup in indiana killed three people, injured more than 20. it happened in frigid snowy conditions on interstate 94 near michigan city. look at these toy trucks is what they look like. many people were stuck in cars for hours on end in 10-degree weather. visibility at the time was a quarter mile or less. several semitrailers were among the cars that crashed. the eastbound side has been closed as cranes and wreckers helped to clear the scene. >> new this morning a political

twist with a political payback. the campaign for chris christie has less than two weeks to comply with subpoenas from the federal prosecutors. the state republican party has also been subpoenaed. federal attorneys looking into claims that christie's aides created traffic jams as political payback against a democratic mayor. four people close to christie have been fired or resigned as a result of that scandal. >> overnight a power glitch shut down train service for two hours in new york city. thousands of people were forced to wait inside trains or at rail stations. this as crews try to fix the problem. power was restored about 10:00 last night. trains started to run then. trains are running normally this morning. >> an unmanned rocket has lifted off from cape canaveral in florida. that carrying a communications

satellite into orbit. it will sport the space station and the hubble space telescope. it carry add special tribute honoring engineer arther mcmaki who died in november. he was the voice of nasa in the 60s and 70s, he broadcast the countdown for the rocket launches. >> 6:17 now. a look at your forecast. >> it's looking better. the weather is going to be warmer, less wind which is good news. the winds firing up red flag warnings which we'll show you that. chilly outside, clear, dry air not our typical low clouds tor marine layer that comes in and keeps the morning temperatures up. not the case so far especially throughout this week. as we look at other temperatures, 33 in santa rosa. 47 in san francisco, a bit more mild near the water. our inland valleys starting to pay off in the 30s.

then we see things warmer quickly. as soon as the sun comes up. helping to mix down drier air aloft. we'll see temperatures in some of our interior valleys into the 60s to near 70. the pattern falling this upper low. so winds offshore and gusty out of the northeast early on, then we'll see a southeast breeze kicking up by mid afternoon. elevations above 1,000 feet. the red flag warnings through there afternoon then subsiding toward the evening. high clouds at times today as the low tracks away from the bay area. as it leaves us we're going to see high pressure building back in which is going to -- maybe a patch or two of low clouds near the shore. the long-range forecast as we get beyond the seven-day forecast, you notice on the bottom of the screen the temperatures warming up close to mid-70s. by next thursday we will see the naem drop closer to it.

as we head to next thursday now, starting to see the rain line dropping further south into southern oregon. this is where the jet stream has been. it's been in british columbia and alaska. we hope that shift begins to develop. 68 in san jose. 70 in morgan hill around the peninsula mid to upper 60s. north bay locations, the northeast winds, 70s around santa rosa, napa, oakland again 70 degrees. around the tri-valley in the low 70s, 68 in danville. here is a view of your weekend get away. 51 in reno. easy drive for the weekend and your sunday forecast shows santa cruz, in the 70s this weekend and warmer temperatures as we head through next week. for a check of your commute here is mike.

>> if you only care about the temperature inside the casinos. westbound 580, crossing here, let's look at the area. there are a couple of issues. the follow building causing traffic to head over to the dublin interchange. it's held steady. that's the good news out of the altamont crash. sticking out in the slow lane. this build coming out of the altamont pass making livermore and dublin easier as some are held up there, can't get over to that portion of the commute. a smooth drive from the east bay to the peninsula for 92, also 84 down the dumbarton bridge. keep in mind right now at present we have an overturned pickup trauk at main. when it gets into thecy, there should be five or ten minutes but we've seen slow downs from slow downs over to the city.

bob is getting live reports. we'll watch that carefully. here in the south bay a smooth drive for traffic northbound 101, had an earlier backup, that first birthday before 6:00. it's 6:20. we see this build for 101, 680 to 880. 87 into downtown, there you go, we changed from the cities into the upper 50s for this stretch as well as 15. a look at the toll plaza. starting to calm down. no problem for fast track. no metering lights right now. the north bay we have the build, southbound 101 through san rafael. you move smoothly out of novato toward that bridge. back to you. >> 6:21. still ahead on "today in the bay" an elderly man hit by a car. we'll show you that video that

a rare winter wild fire, this is burning in oregon, they say it's one of the biggest winter fires in oregon in years. it could be seen for 20 miles near arch cape about 80 miles east of portland.

70-mile-an-hour gusts as we look at live pictures this morning. 70-mile-an-hour gusts of wind are causing huge problems for more than 100 firefighters in oregon this morning. >> right near the tourist area too. police need help finding a hit and run driver. look at the moment he was struck. this is last friday morning on willow avenue yards from the hercules police station. the man was walking across the street when an suv, right there, knocked him to the ground. witnesses say the driver did stop, get out and approach the victim but then the driver got back in his suv, drove around the victim and took off. the victim is a 70-year-old man. he is now recovering at home. >> in the east bay grief counselors will be on hand at holy rosary school in antioch following the shooting death of a boy. an initial investigation appeared to show that the boy had accidentally shot himself but following an autopsy the

coroner ruled the shooting was not accidental, the boy had died from an intentional self-inflicted gunshot wound. it's unclear the anyone was home or how the boy was able to get his hands on the gun. >> a pastor is under investigation of dealing meth. the fairfield daily reports that police found a gun, meth, at the home of 39-year-old mark lewis. he has been the pastor of the fellowship baptist church. he is a suspect in the bombing of an ex-girlfriend's home. >> investigators looking into what caused a police dog to attack its handler. it happened yesterday afternoon, the dog attacked the officer from the back seat of the squad car. the officer was able to pull over and get the dog under control. the officer suffered injuries. the canine was taken to a kennel. it's being monitored.

outside now, san francisco along the embarcadero, we have a look at your morning forecast and also how the weekend weather will shape up. >> we have a look at the opening bell on wall street and also over at the nasdaq. could this be when we get the really big correction they are concerned about. this is friday, january 24th and this is "today in the bay." good morning. i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm peggy bunker in for laura. >> just in a russian official confirming right now confessed nsa leaker edward snowden will not be sent back to the u.s. russia will reportedly continue to extend asylum to snowden at least through august of this year. officials say so far there have been no complaints about his behavior and snowden can extend his refugee status if he wants to. >> also overnight in cairo, at

least five people are dead, dozens injured in three separate explosions throughout the city. you can see the damage done to several buildings. it appears all three blasts were aimed at the police. for more on the violence let's go to tracie potts who is monitoring the situation live in washington, d.c. the pictures we're seeing coming in really amazing damage. it looks like they were targeting police because the first blast happened at police headquarters, the second at a metrocation but police cars were targeted and third at a police station. apparently after that there were clashes between security forces and about 2,000 supporters of president morsi, bombs thrown, tear gas. you saw some of the aftermath. five people at least killed and dozens injured and all of this coming one day before the third

anniversary of protests that threw out former president hosni mubarak. is any one claiming responsibility? not initially. there are reports of a militant group that claimed responsibility but those reports haven't been verified. >> 6:32. a follow-up a fellow judge says immigrants in federal courtrooms should not be squakled if possible. a response to a class action lawsuit to limit the use. it applies to the san francisco court. immigration officials will now avoytd shackling immigrants unless there is a safety tlaeft though they will be shackled at a brief hearing where all of the detainees appear along side one another. >> rare winter wild fire in oregon. look at these live pictures here. this is an arch cape, oregon, very unusual this time of year to see these. first, yesterday about 3:00 in the afternoon, then another fire

was reported after midnight. a little bit south according to police. seaside is a tourist spot. you can see the fires out of control. part of the problem gusts of wind, about 70 miles per hour. it has many flames jumping over logging roads. about 100 were involved trying to get this under control as we continue to watch, the winter wild fire. >> that wind in oregon we also have it here as well. let's join rob with the latest. >> similar to what we're seeing here, high pressure on top giving us this dry offshore breeze and area of low pressure tracking through northern california giving us high fire danger conditions for our hill tops especially. we're talking above 1,000 feet with winds gusting above 30 miles per hour.

low humidity levels and warm temperatures again. so at least through mid afternoon, elevated locations of the north bay, east bay and south bay. that's a change. the northeast winds early on. shifting out of the southeast by the afternoon, as the wind speeds drop off we should see fire danger decreasing. you can see the wind about 5 to 10 miles per hour. closer to ground level than in the hills. wind speeds at about 30 miles per hour. 40s and 30s, chilly start especially in the north bay. you'll see the numbers climb by another 35 degrees by the afternoon. so a cold start. 39 in livermore. you look at the pollen forecast you notice that the breezes, these are spring like levels. so again, not so good of our air quality. pollen count is very high for this time of year. high clouds going by today. patches on the coast.

and you'll notice as we head to the weekend temperatures starting to climb on up. probably one of the cooler tas. san francisco highs in the mid-60s. highs near 70. maybe close to a record in oakland with a high of 70 degrees. >> looking toward the bay bridge and the approach. we'll show you the incline from oakland into san francisco. head up around the new span you see those red lights stacked up moving slowly over toward treasure island. they got to keep track on the bridge moving. it's friday, there is a litter volume to keep this lighter flow area on the span. let's look back at the toll plaza. we have cash lanes backing up. even though we had terrific show a slight build. no problems out of the maze and the map will show you mild

slowing through berkeley. in the upper 50s from golden gate field to the berkeley curve. we'll continue to see more slowing throughout the next hour and a half, two hours. we'll look to the maps into san francisco. more slowing into the san francisco side. as we talked about they lighten the load with the metering lights. you approach in toward city streets. on the peninsula we have an issue from 92 into half moon bay. reports of this, i'll get a refresh on this. 92 at main street. no. waiting for the tow truck to arri arrive. this is off of the roadway bought distraction. so that will be an issue for 92 and as crews arrive. across the bay through the tri-valley, a quick look at fremont shows you southbound into the south bay.

>> happening now protesters have seized a government building in the you crane capitol of kiev. protesters broke in without facing resistance. yesterday opposition leaders met with the president of the country, the leaders told the crowd the president promised to release dozens of protesters detained after clashes with police. the president promised to stop further detention of protesters. >> a face-to-face meeting between syria's government and opposition forces will not hatch, not today. today was to be the first time since the uprising began that the two sides would sit down for direct face-to-face negotiations. they are in switzerland meeting with u.n. negotiators, both meeting separately today for the second time in as many days. a u.n. spokeswoman did not rule out direct talks maybe later on. >> mexico's capital city is trying to improve the quality of water. a new law will require all

>> influence this morning a new home, expensive home, seriously damaged by fire overnight. officials say the home was empty and vacant, somebody using it to grow marijuana. it's located on tampico drive. the flames you can see so big at first firefighters had to call for backup. fight the fire from the outside of the house. too dangerous to go in. they were able to keep the flames from spreading to other homes and put it out a couple hours ago. the cause of the fire is under investigation. officials say it's very suspicious. no reports of injuries. >> in a couple hours some of the top surfers will be hitting our area.

they are also going to hit the water for the start of the mavericks surf competition. >> we have team coverage of the super bowl of surfing, meteorologist rob mayeda. let's start with bob redell who joins us live in half moon bay. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott and peggy. that first sheet over an hour now 8:00, some of the competitors in this year's mavericks invitational showing up at pillar point harbor. a very anxious, very excited about the possibility we could see real monster waves. you have to give credit to the organizers choosing today. there is a surf advisory. we are talking waves as big as 40 to 45 feet tall. we caught up with mark healy, professional surfer who will be competing. he is from hawaii. these waves are created by swells that were caused by a storm that just hit hawaii. he was just in hawaii. he saw those swells on the way here to our coastline and he was surprised how much energy they

had. he thinks they could make for ideal conditions in today's competition. >> for us the biggest challenge is the condition of the waves. it's almost like in a way it's almost more challenging when all of the conditions are good because you know it's like how far do you want to push yourself. no excuses. the bowl is right there staring you in the eye. it will be interesting. >> reporter: when i asked if he gets scared he says he does especially when they get in a tight spot. in those situations you just got to compartmentalize. i'm not sure i would be able to do that if i had a wall of water over knee. 24 surfers this morning. that includes mark, this is invite only. you've got surfers from santa cruz, sf and obviously hawaii, australia, brazil, south africa. those people arriving here on 36 hours notice. they expect pretty big waves.

might recall a few years ago there was a sneaker wave. a couple of them took out spectators, they are okay, but that was at the pillar point beach. they are no longer allowed on pillar point beach to see the waves that break 100 yards offshore. options are go to the oceana hotel and spa. they have a big beer garden festival, a big to-do for this event. or watch it online. they will stream it live. again 8:00 the first heat, the main final competition, the final is supposed to be around 1:30 this afternoon. >> bob redell, thank you. he was saying earlier that the oceana hotel you can't see the surfing, you can see it on television but a big party. >> right. how about that, rob, hearing about the perfect conditions. >> we're watching the wave heights when we started. the wave heights were closer to 8 feet, now up to 11 feet. we'll probably see at least 13

feet offshore. then as the wave energy approaches the coast and slows down we'll see waves rise out of the water. should get up to 20 to 30 beat the some sets again approaching that 40-foot front face on the monster waves. that's what we'll see there. we'll see cool temperatures, numbers in the mid-60s around the viewing area looking at highs right around lunch time with patches of no clouds. the weekend, though, wave heights will come down. the temperatures climbing into the 70s toward saturday and sunday. a chilly start. we're seeing 42 in san jose. the partly cloudy skies around the south bay. this is mid level moisture coming in out of the south. an upper level low which is tracking off to our north and west for today. right now 42 in san jose, 39 in livermore, 47 degrees in san francisco. the offshore winds continue to be a problem and our hilltop locations a sign we have strong
