good morning. breaking news. yet another video threatening the sochi olympics discovered online overnight. can those games be kept safe? we'll ask the man who ran the olympics in salt lake city, former presidential candidate mitt romney is here for an exclusive live interview. tragic scene, the wreckage of a massive pile-up caused by whiteout conditions near chicago just cleared this morning. 40 vehicles involved, at least three people dead, more than 20 injured. while a new ice threat faces drivers in the south today. the beliebers hold a vigil overnight. for the embattled singer. could his increasingly erratic behavior sink the superstar's career?

and surprise, an incredible story of two girls who became friends at college and looked so much alike, they joked they could be sisters. well, guess what, they are, and they're here live today, friday, january 24th, 2014. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie live from studio 1-a in rockefeller plaza. >> and good morning, welcome to "today" on a friday morning. i'm matt lauer. >> i'm savannah guthrie. alongside al roker and natalie morales. two weeks from today, opening ceremony in sochi. and yet, we continue to hear about these new threats. >> it's like a drip, drip, drip. and governor romney is here. we'll be talking about that with him. he is the guy who had to handle the games in salt lake city which came shortly after 9/11. he knows a thing or two about security and we'll talk to him in a moment. this is our top story today. that newly discovered threat

against the winter olympic games in sochi. let's get right to richard engel. richard, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. this threat was actually first posted online earlier this month but gaining traction now. it's from a group with a proven track record, and it's part of a growing trend where islamic militant groups are adopting sochi as their cause. and that's a problem. >> reporter: the terrorist threat appears to come from a known branch of al qaeda with fighters from russia, the caucuses, central asia and pakistan. the tone is smug and mocking. saying the olympics have already been tarnished, that russia is trembling, and ominously that violence is coming. that's not the way russian officials see things. at the ice rink, the new 12,000-seat hockey stadium, the venue manager told us that sochi is the safest city in the

world. >> i'm sure everything will be okay because you can see in that security procedures are real tough. >> reporter: two messages, one threatening, the other confident. but is there room in between for much olympic spirit at a games where russia and islamic extremists have something to prove? this is the center of the main olympic park medals plaza on a rainy day. you can hear them warming up for the opening ceremony. the stadium radiate out from here like folks on a bicycle wheel. in one sense, it's very convenient because you can walk to the different venues, but also all brand new. there aren't bars and restaurants, you can't bring in outside liquid. russia puts so much effort into turning this into a secure bubble that in the end, it feels somewhat sterile, kind of like a convention center that's been sealed off. the security perimeter may be a necessity. radical islamist groups are making sochi their cause. but why? russia has a dirty little secret, the ongoing military

operations in the caucuses, mainly in dagastan. russian security forces often conduct counterterrorism missions there, sometimes very aggressively, according to human rights groups. now, russia's insurgency at home is becoming a battle over sochi. >> reporter: in a sense, these games are caught between russia, which wants to show how strong it is that it can organize a safe games here, which is not very far from the caucuses and the militants themselves who want to prove they can hit vladimir putin, the russian strong man. >> all right, richard engel in sochi for us this morning. while security was a focus of the 2002 winter olympic games in salt lake city, which were held months after 9/11. and the man in charge was former presidential candidate mitt romney. and he joins us this morning exclusively. good morning. >> thank you. good morning, savannah.

>> you see the results as well as we do, as the person who was once in charge of delivering and executing a safe olympic games. how secure do you feel? >> well, of course, there's never been a games i know of that has been so targeted for specific threats as you're seeing in sochi. at the same time, the level of security preparations appears to be at an unprecedented level. i think people can recognize that the hard sites will be safe. the athletes will be safe, spectators in the venues will be safe. but it's the soft places you can't be 100% certain will be entirely safe. but my guess is the russians have done everything humanly possible to protect the games. >> i guess the gut check question is, would you go to sochi? would you send your own family to sochi? >> the answer is yes. i believe the games will be safe. but that doesn't mean there's a 100% guarantee in anywhere in the world today. the threats leveled suggest this is going to be an area that could be targeted. and therefore, there's a degree of risk associated with, well,

frankly life today in a world where terrorism exists. >> you mentioned what a dangerous neighborhood this is. you have never minced words when it comes to russia. you have a couple of memorable lines in the campaign. i wonder what you think of vladimir putin's decision to stage these olympics in the backyard where he's been staging battle against militants for years. >> terrorists can move almost anywhere they want to go. and only takes one person to go through. so a place like sochi can be surrounded, if you will, the intelligence work is the key to keeping the games secure. yes, the hardened targets can have fences and patrols and so forth. but, frankly, in order to protect an area as large as sochi, you need extraordinary intel work. and that's what happened with our games that gave me confidence they'd be safe. we'll hear reports of an individual they're looking for, that suggests they have good intelligence. all in all, seems to be a very effective security program. again, no 100% guarantee.

>> very quickly, you said during the campaign that russia was a geopolitical foe that lined up with the world's worst actors. what do you think about the olympic committee to let russia host the olympics? >> well, i don't think you hold off particular countries based upon their politics, but there's no question in my mind. russia has been and continues to be a geopolitical adversary, not a military foe, but a geopolitical foe. they line up with assad, kim jong-un, their friends are some of the world's worst actors. >> mitt romney, it's always good to get your perspective. we have a lot to talk about this morning. there's a new documentary "mitt," a look inside your two campaigns and we'll talk to you about that in a couple of minutes. >> thanks, savannah. >> over to matt. now to treacherous conditions on the roads this morning. you're looking live now in michigan city, indiana, outside chicago where crews are still working to clean up a massive and deadly pile-up. that accident caused by a sudden

snowstorm. nbc's john yang has the latest on that. good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, right now, workers are clearing the last of the debris getting ready to reopen the stretch of 94. it took nearly 16 hours to clear the vehicles involved in the crash that left three dead and 20 injured. at the time of the accident, visibility was almost zero. >> the horrific one i have seen. >> reporter: whiteout conditions lead to a massive chain reaction collision outside michigan city, indiana, trapping motorists in their cars beneath the wreckage. the treacherous conditions make it difficult for emergency responders. >> it's not only for everybody out here, but for the families. >> late thursday, police released information about those killed. a husband and wife from grand rapids, michigan, and a 66-year-old chicago man and his

pet golden retriever. witnesses said they could hear the crash from two miles away. >> sounded like a train coming off the rails. >> reporter: police say 40 vehicles including 15 semis were involved in the pile-up bringing traffic along the interstate to a standstill. the backup stretched 15 miles. >> complete whiteout. >> reporter: dixie was in the middle of the mangled mess and spoke by phone with nbc station wmaq in chicago. >> it's like a parking lot, wall to wall cars and trucks. >> reporter: one of the injured spoke by phone from his hospital bed. >> a semi coming towards us, i thought i was going to die. >> reporter: school buses brought in to warming stations and to transport injured to hospitals. >> it goes on for miles. >> reporter: motorist mike carpenter was going westbound and sent this cell phone video. >> there's so many cars that inside, i couldn't see anything. that's a nightmare, i promise

you. >> reporter: officials tell us the dead were all in their 60s. they say it will take weeks, even months to figure out what happened. matt. >> all right. thanks very much. that's indiana. meanwhile, down south, bad day to be on the roads, as well, al. >> absolutely, guys. a real treacherous situation going on. let's show you what we've got. last 24 hours, temperatures dropped 21 degrees in dallas, houston at 31, 24 degrees below where it was 24 hours ago. charlotte at 10, 11 degrees below where it's been. and here's what's going on. we are looking at a big change in the jet stream. again, another big drop, clipper comes down, a little bit of that arctic express will blow on in here. you can already see, we are looking at an icy mix, stretching between corpus christi on into houston. that blue line, the freezing line. and so we are looking at more frozen precipitation coming in to that part of the country.

sleet will be falling. we're looking at ice pellets accumulating on the ground. freezing rain, this is our big concern. the rain will freeze upon contact, causing severe icing conditions, dangerous travel on roads and overpasses. tons of roads already have been closed. downed trees and power lines. and, in fact, up to 400 airline cancellations. let's go to houston right now where it's a real mess. that's where janet shamlian is. janet? >> reporter: al, good morning, we have a mess in southeast texas from sleet and rain here in houston to snow in huntsville. when you get these conditions this far south, it shuts everything down. to give you an idea, the last time we had any measurable snow in this region was 2009. the massive houston school system has closed for the day, a rare snow day in this region. hundreds of other schools have closed, as well.

and last night, the airlines started canceling flights into houston. this is a major hub for united airlines. that's going to have repercussions across the country today. there is ice in san antonio, snow in corpus christie and beaumont. and it's just getting worse because the temperature is dropping. al. >> that's right. that 32-degree line is right there. they don't have salt spreaders, putting down rock for traction. i'll give you an idea for airlines for january. 33,000 airline cancellations this month. that's more than 2012, 2013 combined. we're not done with january yet. >> my goodness. long, hard winter. >> thank you. and natalie is following a sad story from canada. >> and a really sad story out of canada. >> such a tragedy this morning. the search is still on for dozens of people unaccounted for after a deadly fire at a senior home in quebec. katy tur in quebec with more. good morning.

>> reporter: good morning. five are dead and 30 are missing. it is a block of ice because of the sub zero temperatures. there is no word when the authorities will be able to get in there. by morning, the scene was devastating to behold. a senior citizen home encased in ice, only an elevator shaft left recognizable. this horror only matched by the images just hours earlier. a fire in a three-story complex filled with the elderly. by the time help got there, little could be done. the fire chief called it a night from hell. the archbishop was nearly speechless. >> tragedy. it's a big number of people who died. >> reporter: officials say most who lived here were over the age of 85 and only five could get around on their own. this man drove all night from montreal to look for his 99-year-old mother. he fears is now gone. >> she's still there. i can't believe it.

>> reporter: dozens are still missing, and family members were urged to contact local police as they try to figure out who was inside. >> it doesn't mean those people are dead. maybe they are at some other residence, a family vacation. >> all members of the government express our condolences for this terrible loss of life. >> reporter: condolences poured in across canada for the families of la verte as they chipped away at the frozen remains to figure out what went so wrong. central cairo today kir people and injuring dozens of others. the early morning blast sent smoke rising over egypt's capital. damaging the security building and museum across the street. witnesses said gunmen opened fire on the building after that explosion. hours later, there were two smaller blasts killing at least one person and injuring 15. well, if you take vitamin d

56 grammy awards. we're going to be live in los angeles monday on "today." and we're hoping some of the surprises. >> sounds good. let's begin this half hour with the arrest of one of the biggest pop stars in the world, justin bieber. he's out on bond this morning after being charged with driving under the influence and resisting arrest. mark potter in miami beach. good morning to you. >> good morning to you, matt. we're outside the home in miami beach where justin bieber came to spend some vacation time. it's where fans gathered to show support after he spent several hours in a local jail. >> justin bieber -- >> reporter: justin bieber's day at the hands of police and the court came to an end after the hearing. >> so the total bond would be $2,500. >> reporter: after spending several hours in jail, bieber was released and walked out to a waiting suv. then climbed on top to wave to bystanders.

bieber's problems began in the early morning hours thursday after a night of partying on miami beach, he was spotted by fans driving a yellow lamborghini. >> oh, my god. justin just got pulled over. >> reporter: police say they stopped bieber after he and a friend were caught drag racing in a residential neighborhood. shortly after 4:00 a.m. >> the officer estimated anywhere up to 55 to 60 miles an hour. >> reporter: the arrest report claims bieber was uncooperative and repeatedly cursed at police at one point saying what the blank did i do? why did you stop me? officers say bieber later admitted to using alcohol and prescription drugs. resisted arrest without violence. all misdemeanors. charlotte trig says despite his smiling mug shot, it was a different bieber behind bars. >> he was actually in tears. and according to a source, he was crying his eyes out in jail.

>> reporter: fans known as beliebers joined outside the home to show their support. >> bieber's blood contained alcohol, pot and flintstones chewables. justin was clocked going 60 miles an hour in a lamborghini, ooh, 60 miles an hour in a lamborghini. hey, justin, it's called second gear, try it some time. >> now, bieber's attorney roy black would not comment on the case. we also reached out to bieber's parents and representatives for comment, but they also declined. >> mark potter, thanks very much. bill has covered his career from the start. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> jokes from the late night comedians aside, what are we watching here? >> to be honest, i'm concerned what we're watching is a little bit of a meltdown and possibly one connected to a health issue, an addiction issue, and i kind of wish maybe people would give the kid a break for five minutes. >> give him a break in what way?

what are we doing to cause this? if it's an addiction issue, what's our role in this? >> well, i think the public role can be one of maybe just a touch of empathy. the vitriol is hard for me to understand. how many people sort of one day were, you know, quick to make jokes about michael jackson and the next day were quick to sort of be leading the procession of sort of heartfelt memories and sharing of these things? you know, this is a kid with a clear family history of addiction issues. there's smoke all over the place, right, in the sense there have been friends arrested with drugs in his home. he's saying he's using drugs when he's arrested. and i think when you look at his judgment, a kid smiling in a mug shot, a kid who has to lose all the things he has to lose and losing them anyway. it makes me concerned for the boy.

>> you talk about smiling in the mug shot, getting on the suv. that was the he doesn't get it moment for me. when you get out of jail and get up on top the suv and wave to your fans. in my opinion, this may sound cliche, but that's the moment, you cover your face, slink in the back of the suv and start thinking about how you're going to apologize to those fans not waving to them. >> that's a rational way to look at it, which is why i think maybe justin's not in a rational frame of mind. listen, there's two ways this breaks down. either this is -- a giant spoiled brat run of days or months or year. but the other alternative is that i think he may really be dealing with some issues here. >> yeah. >> and, like i said, it's hard to explain. if you look at the actual crimes he's committed. i'm in no way defending the behaviors. these are stupid, reckless behaviors. he's lucky no one was badly hurt

last night and some of the other instances we've sort of heard about over the last year. and he's going to have to have a bottoming out in order to realize that. >> thanks. and i want to mention, he's been on this show a lot of times. every time he comes here, he's polite, professional, prepared. and that's why these incidents start to make me worry that this is something else. because it doesn't seem to be the kind of young man we've seen around here. >> that's right. and he's surrounded himself around a group of enablers. >> that's the question. how are the folks around him helping? >> and a check of the weather. >> we've been talking about all this cold air, but how about where it's warm? and our friends in california and the west are really dealing with record-breaking temperatures from san francisco down to san diego. look at this, l.a., 9 degrees above normal, san clemente, 8 degrees above normal. going up to the west. this is a stark image.

the satellite from the west in 2013 january. look at all the snow pack and snow cover which is so vital to the watersheds there. this is this year. almost nothing. that is frightening and that is why we have red flag warnings up for much of california all the way into southern oregon. warnings extending 1,000 miles for fire danger. we've got strong offshore winds and record dry conditions are going to continue. it is not good news. and we see no change for at least the next ten days. we're going to see temperatures in the upper 60s to near 70s in the north bay. livermore and pleasanton close to 70. danville about 68 and the trend over the next four days is above average and warmer into next week and we'll see this trend continue for your weekend plans too. you can see in san jose there,

well, we are back at 7:42 with more of our exclusive interview with former presidential candidate mitt romney. the new documentary "mitt" is available today on netflix takes a rare inside look at his two runs for the white house and reveals what it's like to watch an election slip away. >> what do you think i should say in a concession speech? read what i have here.

they also deserve congratulations. >> governor romney, good morning again to you. >> good morning, savannah. >> were there parts of that documentary that were a little painful to relive? painful to watch? >> that was one of them. on the night that you lose going back and seeing that is not one of the highlights of my life. put together a lot of footage and most of it's kind of fun. as i watch my sons and grandchildren, daughters-in-law interacting and supporting a guy under the microscope. >> you must live a little dangerously to let a camera in and really see everything for that length of time. >> well, there were some scenes i wish he wouldn't have included. a couple of scenes where we're praying, for instance. and i knew he was in the room, but i didn't know he was filming during our prayer. but he captured everything and put it together and it's kind of an unusual. i don't think anyone in the world of politics has before had

cameras follow them around. they put together film that's not political, it's more personal and family oriented. >> it's incredibly personal. and you mentioned the shots of your family praying. you see in this film how deeply you feel your faith, how important your faith is to you. were you conflicted about showing that side of yourself during the campaign? >> well, i certainly wanted to make people understand i'm a man of faith and was proud of that. i didn't want to talk about doctrines of one church versus another. that wasn't my role. the church itself can do that. the fact i'm a person of faith was a important part of my presence and who i was as a candidate. >> was seeing the prayers on film too personal? >> it's a little unusual. you see a painting of george washington on his knees, but you don't have film of him actually praying and hearing the words. and in this case, we have my wife praying and me, as well, and we have scenes of ann and i hugging each other and talking very personally to one another.

and he -- gosh darn it, he captured all that and actually used it. >> one of the things people say about this movie, it manages in 90 minutes to do something your campaign never could, which is really show who you are. this personal side of you. do you think that's true? is this the real mitt romney? >> oh, i think it's hard for a campaign to do that. and we probably missed the opportunities that we might have had to do that. at the same time, campaigns have 30-second ads and debates and those are very narrow snapshots. what i'd love to see would be to have each candidate do a 1 1/2-hour film on themselves and the voters all have to look at three-hour films and make their choice. >> one of the things you say in the film is when people lose a presidential election, when someone loses, they're branded a loser for life. do you feel that way? >> well, if you go back and look at people who have run. just run and lose, they pretty much go off the stage.

that's probably as it ought to be. but i'm not worried about that. i have plenty of time with my kids. >> let's ask you about chris christie. i know you feel and you've said that you feel like he has moved on from this bridge scandal, handled it well. have you called him and offered support or encouragement? >> yeah, i've been in touch with chris. and frankly, i think what you've seen is a guy who is a strong leader, he took responsibility, he fired people that were responsible for the scandal, and he has moved on as a leader. and i do believe the american people want to see a strong leader in the white house. and he is. >> you see the bridge scandal and other allegations have come forward. they all seem to have a theme, which he uses, allegedly, hardball, sometimes bullying tactics against people who cross him. have you never experienced that side of him? >> no, we get along well. we're close friends. and we're watching a washington

that can't get the job done, chris does, and that's one of the reasons why he's as popular as he is. >> you were asked by the "new york times" last week whether or not you'd consider running for president again. i have to put your response up on the screen. it says, oh no, no, no, no, no, no. i count 11 nos. will you never consider another run? >> no, this is a time for chris christie, mike huckabee, jeb bush, john kasich, a long list, marco rubio, a lot of folks who should have a chance to be our nominee and i'm going to support the one who gets the prize. >> you think hillary clinton is beatable if she's their nominee? >> i'm sure she is. because i'm sure people recognize the country's not doing what it should be doing. >> it's good to talk to you. thanks for your time, sir. >> thanks, savannah. >> "mitt" is available on netflix starting today. coming up, a remarkable

he wrote @ragbagusa the new problem we face is mass surveillance where governments are seizing billions and billions and billions of innocents' communication every single day. snowden praised the privacy panel that the nsa's mass telephone collection is of minimal value and wrote, "i never stole any passwords, nor did i trick an army of coworkers." but the attorney general told msnbc's ari melber -- >> clemency, a simple no-harm, no-foul, i think that would be going too far. >> reporter: in the web chat, snowden didn't answer this charge that he was working with vladimir putin's russia. >> i don't think it was a gee whiz luck event that he ended up in moscow. >> reporter: an accusation he flatly denied to "the new yorker's" jane mayor. >> he said that he acted alone, completely alone with no one else and certainly no other country. >> reporter: one man setting off a national debate over privacy

that the president and congress have yet to resolve. andrea mitchell, nbc news, washington. a first court appearance today for former virginia governor bob mcdonnell and wife, maureen. they are indicted on federal corruption charges. "the washington post" reports that mcdonnell rejected an offer to plead guilty to a single fraud count to avoid a trial and leave his wife out of the case. the mcdonnells have denied any wrongdoing. mangled cars and trucks were still being towed overnight from the scene of a deadly highway pileup near michigan city, indiana. the chain-reaction crash on i-94 east of chicago involved more than 40 vehicles. state police blamed ice and blinding snow. at least three people and a pet dog were killed, and more than 20 people injured. the accident left cars crushed between semitrailer trucks, and it took hours to remove all of the victims. a couple from scotland is going to return home from the

college freshmen kayla and emily had a few things in common, their sense of style, love of theater and science, and the decision to trek all the way from california to louisiana to attend tulane university, their perfect school. it was at tulane they met this fall. they shared something else quite unique. they were both conceived through anonymous sperm donors from colombia, south america. hearing the story and seeing the resemblance in pictures, kayla's mom suggested the girl compare donor numbers. and lo and behold. >> sisters. >> sisters. bound by friendship, blood and destiny, mckayla just changed her facebook page and profile picture to show the world her best birthday present ever.

>> mackayla and emily are with us this morning. sisters. does that still catch you off guard? >> definitely weird. it's crazy walking around campus calling each other sisters. >> it's one coincidence after the other. you meet online in some kind of a roommate questionnaire for tulane. and you find out you've got a little bit in common. you met at school, but you weren't best friends, right? >> we didn't know each other that well. we could be really compatible as friends, but never at the right place at the right time. we've gotten a lot closer recently. >> yeah. i had her number, which is how we ended up communicating towards winter break. >> and some of your friends noticed the resemblance and would say you guys almost like you could be related? >> yeah. i think over the summer, i posted a status about my colombia sperm donor and she messaged me and said i don't want to be crazy, but i also have a colombian sperm donor.

wouldn't it be funny if we were sisters? >> before that, did either of you dare to think it was possible you were related? >> no. >> no. when she posted that status, i was like, that's too much coincidence. i messaged her and my family and went through all her pictures. and i was like, do we look enough alike? could we be related? >> and one of your moms said why don't you check the donor number? >> yeah, my mom over winter break. we were in the same position taking the picture and we looked a lot alike. and my mom said you should really check the donor numbers. >> just describe, emily, for me, the moment you realized the number was the same. >> i panicked. i thought she was kidding. i freaked out and i texted her, you're joking with me. and she told me she wasn't and i started running around the house screaming and telling everybody, calling people. >> and you? >> i was sitting in the dermatologist's office and it was really quiet and i wanted so bad to scream, but i just -- it

was mind blowing. i didn't know what to do. >> you guys, as i said, you were acquaintanc acquaintances, not best friends, now you find out you're sisters. how does the relationship in real terms change overnight? >> well, i mean, this whole -- the media has picked it up and ran with it. the only interactions we get to have are like 3:00 in the morning, this person called they want an interview. we have to go here. >> we see each other multiple times a day now and a lot closer. >> was it ever awkward? i think people assume you're going to go from acquaintances to very best friends overnight. that doesn't just happen. >> yeah. >> have there been awkward moments. >> i think the first time we saw each other at first, we didn't know what to do. but since we're so compatible and we have a lot in common, i think really quickly we became best friends because that's what we would've done even if we weren't sisters. >> and i think there was a moment when we were sitting at dinner and i was like, i don't know your favorite color or anything about you. so we've been catching up.

grammy's. >> great. terrific, heavenly voice. >> good of you to introduce us to her. we want to take a look at hope after despair. the progress being made in the philippines a couple of months after the island nation was devastated by a powerful storm. here's jim mesada. >> reporter: a city crushed by a 20-foot storm surge and today slowly coming back to life. the loss was enormous, more than 6,000 killed, almost 2,000 still missing. hundreds of bodies yet to be identified, and at least 1 million houses destroyed or damaged. but smiles have returned to many like reya, the new mother of a baby boy. back in november, an nbc news team met reya, then eight months pregnant. >> is it looking less dark than it did before? >> i know some day it will improve. and i can -- i can take care of

my baby. >> reporter: but recovery can take years. >> it's really heartbreaking. >> reporter: secretary of interior has run relief operations here since day one. he says conditions have only slightly improved from critical to serious. >> i think we're out of the intensive care unit and we're now in a regular hospital room going through the rehabilitation. >> reporter: aid organizations have sent tons of food and warm blankets. schools have reopened, often inside donated tents. while a cash for work program has put crucial dollars in the pockets of some whose livelihoods were washed away. but many of the poor, have seen no change, no jobs and only one way to survive. and they pray that the world will not forget.

even some cleaning cloths, they don't leave behind lint. nice, really -- >> leaving you with shine. >> okay. >> blotting away oil. >> not all shine is great, as we know, especially when it comes to your face. so we've cut these coffee filters into 2-inch wide strips to blot away oil. this is a cheap solution. you can throw it in your bag, just a little blotting. >> getting a lot of make-up. okay. good idea there. >> sorry, sponges. >> sponges. so they absorb so much moisture. we're going to harness that benefit to help hydrate your house plants. take a sponge, trim it to the sides of your pot, toss it in the bottom and top it with some soil. your plant like you normally would. and if you forget to water it one day or two like i normally do, hopefully it'll keep it healthy and hydrated.

officer killed while on the job. investigators say he was shot by a fellow officer during a pro bags search in dublin on tuesday. the bullet struck smith in one of the areas not protected by his bullet proof vest. the teen convicted of multiple crimes including stealing a celebrities car, he tried to shoot and kill the boyfriend of a girl he liked. that led to an investigation of a storage locker. that's why they found the stolen car and several fake ids. let's check the church this morning. we have seen some waves, 20 to 30 feet out at mavericks. up and down the coast today, high surf advisory, and a red flag warning in our hill tops through mid afternoon elevations

and you know, my theory is we should side up. we figure out things we can do together that we enjoy that's going to allow us to have conversations and relationships and connections. >> if they're pushing you away do you bupush in? what's the best technique for a lot of moms going through what we saw there? >> sometimes when they are pushing away they really are listening. the idea when we want to talk about those conversations like, underage drinking or those risky behaviors i keep hearing from parents in the motherhood who have older kids, keep talking. >> do you agree with that? >> i think communication is key. you have to be able to have conversations, face-to-face communication with your teen. i think the younger you can have open conversation with your child, the better the relationship will be as it gets older. i can't ever remember a time where my mom and i didn't talk about everything. >> really? >> wow? >> she said even when i wasn't talking she was talking to me and i learned that face-to-face communication is so young. we live in such a digital age.

face-to-face communication is so important. >> let's get to kids about your age, although you're not a kid, but after you've graduated from college, growing up, the lines get a little blurred, right? you're becoming an adult. emily, how do we handle that? >> you know it's funny when my daughter was in kindergarten the teacher used to say to the kids to get them to focus, stop, look and listen. repeat it back. that was a sign they were paying attention. now i think about it for myself. i need to stop, look and listen, because then i'll notice when i'm preaching and trying to manipulate them to it do what i want versus the two-way conversation. >> do you listen to your mom more now than when you were in 16. >> the millennial generation, we're 18 to 35, graduating college with almost $30,000 debt in student loans, the most stressed out generation, we are learning how to become financially stable. we need to learn from our parents more than ever. this communication, open dialog, life-learning lessons are so important.

and how they fit in with their other siblings and into the world. i think twins have a greater challenge. how are they going to identify to each other and want the world to identify with them. that means parents have to be smart enough to encourage the differences, to try to avoid the comparison, to try to diminish the competition, and that means at a certain time they have to separate them. they have to give them different classes, hobbies, activities. >> is there a thing about leaning too much? you have your best friend right next to you at all times. does it prevent or stop you from reaching out to others who may -- >> it's actually a good question. i think i'm a little less social possibly because i have this kind of built-in ally and it makes it less effort to have somebody who is always there. what harold said was important, the one mistake my parents will cop to, they emphasize parody and making everything equal which you can do as a parent with kids, you want to make sure everybody feels like they're getting the same treatment but on the downside you don't feel like you have the one on one
