looking live at the bay bridge toll plaza, we see blue sky where earlier we saw golden sunrise. it is a very nice day on tap according to anthony slaughter's forecast. san francisco's district attorney is a high school dropout who was elected by the people to one of the most high-profile and powerful positions in the state and that raises the question how long will george gascon stay in san francisco. many political insiders say he
7:50 am
could be chasing a higher office in the near future. here's raj mathai with the interview. >> reporter: george gascon is a man about town. but he isn't like the others. he's a high school dropout and he's also the first district attorney in the country who is a former police chief and, of course, that hair that stands up and stands out. >> my mother for years would try when i was a little kid to control my hair up to and including using vass elinevasel hair is just very unruly by nature. >> reporter: the soon to be 60-year-old is what you might call a velvet hammer. polished and educated with a heavy dose of street cred. a man who once patrolled south central l.a. during the 1992 riots. >> i worked some of the roughest neighborhoods that you could work within the city. and i did it with a great deal of pride and commitment because
7:51 am
they were very similar to the neighborhoods i grew up in. >> reporter: where he grew up he fled, cuba, in 1967. mixed feelings speaking for cuban americans, when you think about your country? >> very mixed feelings, you know, i think that, you know, we are by and large we have been successful if you define success in economic terms as a group of people. but i think there's still a lot of frustration. we still carry a lot of baggage about, you know, what we left. >> reporter: was there a moment that changed your life that you said, hey, do you know what, i want to get on the good track here? >> yeah, for me it was the military, you know, actually what happened is that i was working and i was having a lot of fun surfing. school obviously was getting more and more remote. i was missing more and more, until i dropped out completely. i was fortunate enough at least that period of time, you could get into the military by getting a ged and it was in the military

that i got my high school diploma and then started going to college. and i had my mentors at that point really were -- were superior officers that saw in me probably something that i wasn't seeing anymore. >> reporter: have you felt it at all that former police chief here and now the d.a. that in many ways the d.a. is supposed to be a watchdog of the police department yet at one point you were the police department? >> you know, i think that that was a concern certainly during the election period. i think that we're way beyond that and part of that is for people that know me well know that actually i am probably one of the harshest critics about police practices even when i was inside policing. so for those that knew me well actually saw this as a really good thing. >> reporter: fair or unfair criticism you're a lawyer, yet you're a d.a. here but you've never tried a case? >> yeah. and, you know, it's a -- it's a good concern for some, you know,
7:53 am
in fact, some of my opponents brought it up during the election period and, you know, my response to that is there are airlines that are run by people who have never flown a commercial jet but they're good business people, they know how to run a large organization. there is a distinction between being able to do some work at the ground level and being able to run a large organization. >> reporter: would you be happy staying here long term in the bay area of san francisco? >> i would be extremely happy. you know, my wife and i are very committed to the area. we love the city. this is home for us. >> reporter: who is more high profile, you or your wife? [ speaking spanish ] >> i think she is. she's a lot smarter than i am, too. >> gascon's wife is local spanish language tv anchor. gascon is about halfway through his four-year term as d.a., and you can watch this interview and others on our website
