good morning, it is nice to see you. i'm veronica de la cruz. a shotgun, plenty of ammunition and a backpack filled with homemade explosives. that's what officials say a gunman who opened fire at a maryland mall brought with him. police say 19-year-old derian aguilar took a taxi to the mall in columbia in suburban baltimore. he had no criminal record. they say aguilar entered near the skateboard shop zumiez and went downstairs to a food court. returned less than an hour later, dumped his backpack in a dressing room and started shooting. shoppers fled in panic or barricaded themselves inside the mall. police say aguilar shot and killed two employees before taking his own life. those victims identified as 21-year-old brianna benlolo and 25-year-old tyler johnson. >> right now we don't have any type of known relationship between the shooter and our victims, nothing -- not one. we have a couple -- and that's what our investigators were working hard at right now to try

to uncover. >> police say they received a missing persons report from aguilar's mother two hours after the shooting. they found a journal at his home which they say expressed general unhappiness, but left no real clues as to the motive. the mall is expected to reopen this afternoon. brutal and record blasting temperatures are slamming parts of the country. for the next two days or so, they'll range from the teens to below zero. windchills even worse. minneapolis, 43 below. minus 23 in milwaukee. and chicago's public schools are closed today. hundreds of flights already canceled. that brings us to nbc's wendy woolfolk who is live fours r us chicago at the navy pier. good morning. >> reporter:en have c en havenv morning to you. this is supposed to be the coldest blast yet. this part of the country hasn't thawed from the first round of the polar vortex and now we're bracing for another.

as you mentioned, the public schools are canceled here in chicago and surrounding suburbs. public transportation schedules and train schedules modified because it is too dangerous to stay outside for long periods of time in these conditions. there is also a propane shortage across the midwest, so many people are looking for heating alternatives. this relentless weather pattern has really started to wear on people and it is only january. temps here are supposed to remain below zero for the next two and a half days. the wintry mix is going to reach the deep south tomorrow. it is brutal, even for winter's standards. live in chicago, wendy woolfolk. veronica, back to you. >> we appreciate it, thank you. a natural gas pipeline in canada that exploded saturday is expected to be operating at full capacity this afternoon. the blast sent flames hundreds of feet into the air, despite temperature business low zero, evacuated residents says they

out there. and as far as like the temperatures, we talked about how bitterly cold it is, especially in areas like the northern plains and stuff, all of this cold air will stay to the east. the best chance of rain appears to be as we go through wednesday and thursday, northern california, especially, and that will move further to the south. not a soaking rain, not a end of the drought buster but it is a change in the weather pattern, which is what we have been so needing. it is just -- the pictures are just incredible and we need to start filling up the reservoirs before the dry season begins. >> people will be confused. what is this? >> it will be pretty crazy. that's a look at the so, again, looks like half inch to inch of rain headed to california. it is a start and that's wednesday and thursday.

welcome back. slowly the weather pattern is changing in the west and that's a great thing. big storm headed to the north and for alaska. it is dragging some moisture up here to the pacific northwest. not going to be a ton of rain, a lot of clouds with this. as far as the forecast goes in the future here, we are going to be watching, again, this moisture, the southerly jet stream here, coming into northern california for first time in literally a month by the time we get to wednesday and thursday. and that's where we're finally going to get a little bit of rain and just in time to save some records. because a lot of areas haven't seen any rain this january at all. you know, and hasn't happened often, especially northern california. >> amazing. all right, thanks, bill. who hit the right tune when it came to dressing to the nines at the grammys? well, taylor swift dazzled glittering gucci, chrissie teaguen opted for this glitzy number of her own. beyonce's sheer white michael
