i'm scott mcgrew. lots to get to. let's start with the forecast and christina loren. good morning. >> good morning. the fog is back. and i want to make sure you're ready for this because it hasn't been this thick for at least a month in the bay area. you're going to notice changes every day, finally that storm track coming back to the bay area. we're talking about significant rainfall totals later this week. the fog this morning, half a mile in napa, the south bay, in campbell when i left the house it was completely shrouded in fog. as we head throughout the day today this will play a factor. give yourself extra time. speaking of which let's check the drive and say good morning to mike inouye. >> good morning, welcome back. we are looking here. welcome back to the fog. there is a parkway sign. there you can't make out the truck scales so there you go as you approach mission boulevard. a thick patch as well as out of

union city. san jose you can see glowing lights. coming up through campbell patches thick so it will be a foggy situation at times. moving up the peninsula also, 101 here and the brightest light is the big billboard on the northbound side. you can make out the head and taillights. it's drifting through the peninsula. low clouds and visibility will be an issue especially through the hills. back to you. >> slow it down. the search is on for the person police say stabbed a san jose state student to death. it happened around 1:30 yesterday morning at a home on suncrest avenue. the victim is 22-year-old richard fan, his girlfriend was having a birthday party at the time when a fight broke out. at some point the family says fan tried to break it up. that's when he was stabbed. he died at the hospital. the family says the party was invite only so the suspect

likely someone they know. >> tried to ask my niece information about whoever come to the party, tried to get the name. >> fan's killing is the city's fourth homicide of the year. >> in the east bay police in antioch are looking for the gunman who shot a man outside a jack in the box restaurant. the 33-year-old victim was shot several times sitting in that silver van. this happened around 4:00 in the afternoon on lone tree way about a mile from highway 4. the man was air lifted to a hospital. we're told he is going to be okay. the reasons behind the shooting unclear. 4:33. someone opened fire in the red coats british pub. it happened just before 1:00 yesterday morning. the suspect was acting strangely ahead of time, then opened fire. they say most of his shots hit the ceiling but one man was hit by a bullet though he didn't

know he was hurt. still his friend told him he was bleeding. that man expected to be okay. the suspect was able to get away in this case before police arrived. >> the teen girl hit and killed by a train will be laid to rest. danica garcia was riding her bike to a choir performance earlier this month when she was hit. the teenager was honored at a memorial service yesterday. her family will take part in a burial procession today. she leaves behind her parents and a brother who is in fifth grade. >> a 19-year-old who went to school in the area facing charges of possessing a weapon of mass destruction, his former classmates say a shy, quiet fellow. vladislav miftakhov graduated from carl mont high school last year. he attends penn state as an engineer. police say when they went to his apartment in pennsylvania looking for illegal marijuana

grow, they found a homemade bomb with an exposed fuse and what they describe as other bomb-making chemicals. he reportedly told an officer he was going to blow things up. a former classmate said he was quiet but never seemed dangerous. >> i had to look back in my year book to make sure this is the same kid. like how is that even possible? >> he reportedly told investigators he experimented with explosives in california. san jose state police now providing safety escorts to students after two sexual assaults on campus over the weekend. on saturday night police say a man rode his bike behind each of the victims and touched them inappropriately. the suspect was last seen riding toward campus village apartments, described as a white man, about 20 to 30 with a thick mustache wearing a black hoody and black pants.

some of the students say they are on edge. >> i look around everywhere i go. i usually when it's dark have i it ready. >> i'm more cautious when i'm going somewhere. like you want to go with me? i'm telling my friends to walk with me. you never want to walk around. it's scary. >> campus police urging students nefrs to walk alone at night. the marin county sheriff's office trying to track down suspects who tie add man while ransacking the home. they rang the bell at the home friday, the victim said the men asked for a woman at the home but she wasn't there. at that point one of the suspects apparently pulled out a gun, forced the man to the ground while the other suspect stole cash and other valuables. the victim says the suspects tied him up, locked him 18 closet. he was able to call 911 and the

suspects were gone. police in hillsborough hope they can help catch a burglary. someone broke into a home near oak rim drive friday morning. investigators say the homeowner arrived and found an unfamiliar white pickup in the driveway. he went inside, heard at least one person leave out a window. the burglar got away with some of the things from the bedroom and office. police hope someone in the area has surveillance video they can look at. people in the midwest are dealing with another dose of extreme wind chills and treacherous travel conditions courtesy of mother nature. it's another arctic blast, the 4th of the season, supposed to be the coldest on record from ohio to new york, snow and ice blanketing the region causing awful conditions and accidents on the roadways. a shortage of propane across the midwest has some people looking for alternatives. >> i have a high efficiency wood burning fireplace in the living

room. we go through about three cords of wood a year. we're going through it pretty quick now. >> temperatures are supposed to stay below zero for 2 1/2 days, many schools have canceled classes urging kids and folks to stay inside. >> closer to home, a live look at san jose, temperatures again expected to be above average but a change on the way. and christina loren, a lot of fog out there as well. >> good morning, scott. we do have a lot of that dense fog back in the bay area forecast, not just today, tomorrow as well. you'll notice the changes as we progress. if you don't want to wait, your seven-day forecast at the bottom of your screen. down to a quarter mile visibility. to the south bay we have really thick fog. so it's not just the usual suspects. travel cautiously. gilroy is looking pretty good

but we'll see these visibilities in and out all morning. mike and i will be here to help get to you work on time. temperatures are chilly. the low clouds trapping in some of the warmth from yesterday serving as a blanket. 51 degrees to start day, in oakland, and this warm start is part of the reason why. it's going to be mild but not by much. temperatures are going to drop off from yesterday. we'll keep that trend going. for today sunrise at 7:15, sun set after 5:00. keep that in mind. we're not getting as much of those beautiful, beautiful early sunrises. they are coming later so keep that in mind. sunrise slowdown happens later. 69 in the east bay, 67 in the south bay. and that rain is looking great. not so great for tahoe. i'll get to that in my next report. >> we're looking here and as you've been talking about there is haze in the air, moisture,

>> 4:43. welcome back to you. a look on michigan avenue in chicago, illinois. it looks beautiful but it is, in fact, well below freezing there. it's going to be brutal today. it's been a busy week in washington as well. tomorrow, president obama will outline his goals and priorities in the next few years in his fifth state of the union. today, congress is scheduled to get back to work. the the country hits the debt ceiling again next week and will not be able to pay the bills. some republicans again insist to raise the debt ceiling democrats must give up something. >> something we shouldn't just write a blank check. >> i do not believe that republican leaders will follow ted cruz over the cliff once again. >> lawmakers may actually compromise on unemployment but raising the minimum wage may be a tougher fight. also on the agenda the farm bill still hasn't been signed and immigration, both of which previously stalled on capitol hill. lawmakers will also consider a

bill that would make sure federal funds are not used to pay for abortion. the no taxpayer funding for abortion act would allow for exceptions in the cases of rape, or incest to the mother. google and samsung, two companies in patent wars, are becoming allies. according to the new york times the companies agreed to a global patent cross licensing agreement yesterday, the deal includes all of the current patents and any filed in the next ten years. both companies are at the center of patent infringement lawsuits though not against each other. terms of that deal not disclosed. >> we're learning about another possible data breach, this one involving the biggest arts and craft retailer in the country. for that and the rest of the news before the bell let's turn to bertha coombs live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning.

>> good morning, scott. the futures now coming off of the lows after a pretty up beat report from caterpillar that beats handily. we're coming off of a major sell-off. the dow fell over 300 points on friday. as we continue to see fears across the global investment landscape. investors worried about with emerging markets after currency crisis that helped fuel that sell-off last week. another possible data breach, this time at michael's craft stores. the biggest arts and craft retailer in the u.s. no word how many customers' data. apparently not the best time to work for coca-cola when it comes to data breaches. lap tops with the personal service for as many as 74,000 employees and contractors were stolen. the company announced that on friday. the lap tops held the social

security numbers, addresses for the employees. however, coke says they have retrieved the lap top since so far there is no indication the information has been misused. i think this is going to be a busy year for people monitoring their credit report. just in case, the best way to make sure there is nothing funky going on. >> and a profitable year for security companies as well. thank you for joining us. let's turn to christina who has a decent forecast just indecent nationwide weather situation. >> it's bizarre. usually i like to think in terms of equal and opposites. they are hit with one of the hardest winters where we've had no winter thus far. everything changes this week, scott. we can't wait for the rain and it is looking really good. you'll see the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen. when the showers move into your neighborhood. we're down to a quarter mile

visibility in santa rosa. we haven't had that thick fog. throughout this week things are going to change, we're looking toward another round of rain. the first week of february, things are going to change. february is look like an active month. really want to travel cautiously because it's not just in the usual suspects, it will burn off earlier in the invalleys. we'll have to wait for that at the coast. temperatures in the 40s and 50s, not too cold. you still need a jacket. we'll hit highs, mild again today, and yeah, about 5 to 10 degrees and then things change. we're talking about a return of the 50s so let's dive into the forecast. area of low pressure, take a look at this. this is well organized. this is what we've been missing so far this winter. as this drops in we're going to get our first showers on wednesday night so area of low pressure on the way.

aguilar had no criminal record. he forced the mall into a lockdown. they are looking for a motive. they found his journal that expressed general unhappiness with his life. the mall is street reopen today. this morning they are taking test samples from that royal caribbean cruise ship. officials with the centers for disease control boarded the ship yesterday while it was docked in the virgin islands. many of the people are suffering from diarrhea and vomiting, similar to the norovirus. it's unclear precisely what is making them sick. the ship will return to new jersey on wednesday. once the ship returns it will undergo an aggressive sanitizing procedure. >> up as scheduled on two ohio

firefighters battling a fire in toledo. it broke out yesterday afternoon. the battalion chief says one of the firefighters who died was a 16-year veteran, the other on the job six months. the chief says the two men were hurt after becoming disoriented while fighting the flames. fellow firefighters pulled the men out from the building but they later died at the hospital. no one in the apartment was hurt a. fire in china wiped out a third of a town. media reports the fire took more than four hours to put out. nearly 2,000 people live in this village. no deaths have been reported. the village was built more than three centuries ago. the cause is under investigation. a civil trial targeting bad teachers will begin in los angeles. the advocacy group students matter filed the suit on behalf of nine students and their families in an effort to get rid of bad educators in the

classroom. the laws cover teacher seniority and others. dozens have moved to abolish or toughen such protections but the unions say the profession is already losing too many talented people. a symbolic moment at the grammys to promote marriage equality. >> a look at the bay bridge. you kind of make out the silhouettes. we're talking about how it's affecting your commute already.
