we're at 6200 feet elevation. at 7,000 they expect roughly a foot of snow. up to 8,000 feet they expect two feet of snow. this is the first significant snowstorm in the sierras in the past two months. is it enough to save the ski season or help the skiers like here at heavenly? probably not. there are some resorts that haven't even opened because they don't have the snow making equipment. places like heavenly, this will save them money. is this enough to make a dent in the drought? the department of water resources, they said probably not. what they are going to do at 11:00 this morning will be their second snow survey of the winter season. that will be about 15 minutes away from here at an elevation of 7,000 to 8,000 feet. and they are going to go out and measure the snowpack and the water content. you may not be aware of this but the state gets about a third of

its water or supposed to get about a third from the snowpack. that is clearly not been the case at least for the past couple of seasons because of this drought. the last snow survey, january 3, they found the water content was at roughly 20% of what it was supposed to be. since then electronic readings have shown that drop to 10%. now that number could go up today because clearly we've got snow again. it could be as much as two feet up there. but that is not enough to make a huge significant change in the drought that has been plaguing the state now for three years. actually saying you know, this is a triple threat, the department of water resources, because we don't have enough of the snowpack, because the reservoirs are so low, and also because of the forecast. yes, we have snow here for the next 24 hours, that's how long this storm warning is in effect. what's going to happen in the days and weeks ahead doesn't look promising. that's what their thoughts are now. reporting live in the south
