happy friday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew. breaking news firefighters keeping an eye on possible flare-up at a santa clara home engulfed in flames. flames erupted around 1:30 at a home near as theman drive and lafayette street. not too far from levi stadium. damian trujillo, we understand one woman was burned in this fire. >> reporter: yes, but she is expected to be okay at this point, scott. you know, this fire, the flames were out a few hours ago but crews are still not able to go into the home to see what may have caused it. it's not safe enough structurely for them to go inside and inspect the damage. and maybe possibly find the source of what may have caused this fire. the flames erupted as you mentioned early this morning. the call came in at about 1:20, neighbors called 911 after they

saw what was going on. the fire went to two alarms but firefighters were able to put it out in roughly 40 minutes. four people were in the home at the time. one had to go to the hospital with minor injuries. but it was neighbors who also tried to come to the rescue. when they noticed the flames they began to try to alert the residents that they had to get out. and they did it with rocks. >> we were throwing rocks from the street, and we were in our neighbor's yard trying to find rocks that were big enough. the fire spread pretty fast that we didn't want to get too close. >> reporter: the crews are still investigating the cause of this fire which seems to have started, again, in the garage area. and then spread to the upstairs portion of this home. that part of the home was engulfed when crews arrived at again about 1:20 this morning. looks like they are going to be here a while. the ladder truck is still out here trying to make sure that there are no hot spots for them to douse, and the fire hoses are

still out so it's going to be a long morning for fire crews. live in santa clara, i'm damian trujillo, "today in the bay." >> thank you. 6:03. in the past 15 minutes we heard from san francisco general hospital on the status of a missing patient. christie smith live at the hospital with what's said about the woman who disappeared after major surgery. >> reporter: good morning to you. i did hear from the hospital and san francisco police a couple minutes ago. they both confirm that this woman is still missing who walked away from hospital yesterday around 1:00. and san francisco police are saying that they searching the tender loin district because that's an area where 34-year-old valerie gates frequented. they say that she is homeless. police telling us that she had surgery yesterday and then left san francisco general hospital on her own. she has a bandage on her neck, 5'3" inches, 120 pounds, wearing a green jacket and burgundy

pants when she was last seen. the hospital is anxious to find her because she needs vital most op meds. this morning i did hear from a spokesperson for sf general who tells me when asked if they think the new procedures that are in place for security worked, the answer is yes. what they tell me is that a rigorous search was done by staff who worked with the sheriff's department who does security here. the family was notified. a missing person's report filed and that is in line with their stronger awol policies new procedures put in place after patient lynn spaulding left her hospital bed in september here, she was found dead in a stairwell weeks later. in that case the grounds were not searched completely. if you have information about valerie gates you are asked to call san francisco police. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> also new this morning amanda knox's ex-boyfriend just got out of police custody moments ago one day after an italian appeals court reinstated the murder

conviction against them. police picked up raffaele sollecito at a hotel in the -- in italy near the board wer austria. police took him to a station, confiscated his pasport and told him he is banned from leaving italy. this is the third trial for the two previously found guilty and then 18 new trial found innocent in the stabbing death of knox's former roommate meredith kercher. italian law allows double jeopardy. you can be found innocent but be taken to court again. this morning kercher's sibling spoke in italy, saying the drawn out court process offers no consolation or closure. >> nothing will ever take away the horror of what happened to her. the best we can hope for is of course finally bringing this whole case to a conclusion. and a conviction and everybody can move on with their lives. >> so they have been found guilty again but it's unclear what's going to happen to knox

with our mike. how about that. >> 1, 2, 1, 2, looking toward the bay bridge. look at that, there is the incline heading up from the oakland side. the taillights kind of gumming up around that power there. pressure island there is a crash blocking the left lane. it's still there and causing additional slowing. look at the bay bridge toll plaza. we have the backup. the metering lights turned on. it's unusual for this time on a friday to have that much backup. it's because they turned the metering lights on and likely slowed them because of the one lane blocked at treasure island. unexpected slowing into san francisco. take note of that. we look at the map we see it's not affecting your approach off 24 por the maze but that will fill in that area. off the berkeley curve slow but down through berkeley okay for westbound 80. better news for the peninsula, 101 is clear as you pass by third, the earlier crash involving as many as four vehicles, that has cleared but

the 15iard -year-old is the you representing the u.s. in figure skating. >> a school apologizing to parents after taking away students' lunch because they didn't have enough in their account. the salt lake school district calling it a mistake taking more than 30 students' lunches away after they were served throwing those in the trash. the students were handed milk and fruit. the district said it did notify parents about negative account balances but some parents say they never got the message. a district spokesperson says they will review that notification system. >> meantime, schools in atlanta remain closed following this week's deadly ice storm. the subfreezing temperatures creating concerns over black ice making driving conditions dangerous. about 2,000 cars were just abandoned during the storm. they are still on roadways. in the meantime, government officials are responding to criticism that their response was too slow. the governor says he's asked for

new jersey symphony. she spoke yesterday as did bruno mars, he will be performing during the halftime show along with the red hot chili peppers. he began his outdoor dress rehearsal when the temperatures were in the teens. >> when we got out there there was a lot of things that happen like the microphone turns into a popsicle. and all of these things that you don't think about going into it but i'm grabbing the mike and it's frozen. >> reporter: and if you have the will to go to make it to the game and the cash to pay for a ticket there are still seats available. the average ticket is selling for $2800. that seems expensive. but it actually isn't compared to super bowls past. in fact, ticket sales up until this week were pretty slow, brokers say a lot of people seemed to be waiting to see how the weather was going to play out. if you remember there was a time when we were possibly looking at the game being postponed if things got bad enough.

>> sherman ruined it for a lot of seahawks fans even if you are holding on to them a little bit. maybe not. but you know what, weather is not looking mediocre. it's looking pretty good. we did think at one point we were going to have to postpone the gameor even start it early. but now doesn't even look like it's going to go down as the coldest ever. that happened in 1972, 39 degrees, we're forecasting about 40 degrees at kickoff in new jersey. here in san jose our time, 3:00 p.m., 56 degrees with a little shower activity on the radar. so if you plan on having a barbecue, just keep that in mind. especially along the peninsula and the coast. might get a little rain. 42 degrees in the east bay, 47 to start the day in san francisco. and 45 degrees in the north bay. so maybe you're getting ready to take your dog for a walk. put that jacket on. you can leave the umbrella at home for today. temperatures are going to end up on the cool side. you want to make sure you're ready for that seasonal averages returning to the bay area after what looks like the warmest san

francisco and san jose january on record. we're going to get all of the details on that. we'll have that at 11:00 a.m. right now it does look like that will be the case. so good air quality. thanks for the rain yesterday. dry and sunny, temps cool into saturday. on sunday it starts to change. let me show you what i'm talking about. and you know what, you can play the role of scientist now if you are so inclined. your seven-day forecast is at the bottom. that gives you your temperatures. this is going to give you where we expect the rain. 8:30 on saturday you can see the front starting to organize, to press closer to the coast line. it will continue to get closer and closer to us. as we head through sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. now the models disagree. i do believe some of this outer band here is going to make its way right over the coast and maybe in san jose. you want to keep that in mind. stop that clock, we have the chance from 8:30 a.m. until about 2:30 p.m. you can see this model brings it in. this is the gfs, over the santa

cruz mountains. i think we're going to get something. i'll let you be the judge. we get the later runs we'll bring them to you. it's chilly this morning. not cold enough for black ice. watch out for slippery conditions, some of the local areas have not had a chance to dry out. >> good morning. that's a great note. we haven't had reports of that but always let us know if you notice anything that would be a problem for fellow drivers. westbound 80, this is the bend across the new span of the bay bridge. notice much smoother into the treasure island tunnel and up the incline. the bridge crew quickly made work of this crash. they cleared it to the san francisco side. the bay bridge toll plaza it's moving smoother. at the backup in the toll plaza, the metering lights were on we had that going past 880 and farther now, slow off of the berkeley curve. unusual for a friday. look at all of this backup from oakland side into san francisco. look at the maps. we don't have a dramatic slowdown not until the berkeley

curve. smooth out of the caldecott tunnel to the maze north 880, 580 all move smooth smoothly. from the maze into the toll plaza, the backup because of the earlier crash which has been cleared from the upper deck or from the westbound to treasure island. smooth drive north from 92 up to the third. the zone slow there may be flares through the area. a little slowing north into millbrae. along the peninsulaing other than that t south bay not a problem. the tri-valley need. there you go, not a problem, a quick look at fremont, guys. a smooth flow for 880. >> thanks, mike. it appears a seinfeld reunion may be in the works. >> during an interview yesterday jerry seinfeld confirmed something involving the other seinfeld cast members has been filled. he calls it a shortish project and likely a one and done deal

jose. not a recall not yet. >> reporter: definitely not a recall, just a stop sale over this seat heater issue. the material on heated seats in some toyotas actually does not meet u.s. standard for flammability issues so if it were to catch fire the flames spread too quickly. that's the specific issue. dealerships like this one in san jose they are going to take a hit. the models here we're talking about represent about 13% of their inventory. let's show you some of the toyotas that we're talking about and give you specifics as to what is affected. this is 36,000 cars that are located now from factory to dealership. unsold toyotas affected. and the only vehicles that were made in toyota's u.s. plants and the heated seats. a stop sale, not yet a recall. let's tell you about the specific years and models in case you have one of these cars. the models put on this,

2012-2014 of the camry which of course is the best selling car. only about 6% of camrys have heated seats so that's something to consider. the 2013 and 14 avalons, siennas and tacomas and the 2014 corollas and tundras. interestingly this comes on the same day that toyota announced global production of their units topped 10 million cars last year. that's pretty unprecedented for a lot of automakers. that many cars. you get out in the morning and you like around how many it affects the numbers are staggering. here in the bay area where temperatures are mild perhaps not being able to have a seat heater or using it is not the big deal. think of some of the frozen states back east wonder if this is going to affect them w. 36,000 cars it's going to be tough. not a recall, we'll be finding out if it does kaes late to a recall. at this time not the case.

court. tracie potts joins us live on capitol hill where the u.s. government may one day have to decide whether knox should be extradited to italy. good morning. >> reporter: right. good morning. the key being one day. it's not something they are going to have to decide soon. this appeals process has to play out. amanda knox issued a statement from her home in seattle calling this verdict unjust, she says she expected better from what many found to be a confusing italian court system. this is the third trial for amanda knox and her former boyfriend. first they were found guilty, then innocent in the stabbing death of knox's former roommate meredith kercher. this morning some of kercher's siblings spoke in italy. they say all of this back and forth with the courts has been tough. >> then to have media attention

and the fact it's drawn out for six years makes it incredibly difficult for us. >> reporter: family said this morning that they are not sure the entire truth has come out about this. it's unclear what is going to happen to knox. she is going to appeal, that process could take a year even if the high court there upholds her conviction, then we deal with extradition. there are 190 countries including italy that have extradition treaties with the united states. it's not clear how that's going to play out. it may put federal officials here in the u.s. in a difficult position having to send her back to italy to face that conviction. >> that woube a significant fif amendment issue. the "today" show is going to cover the story with reports from italy and an interview for the attorney for raffaele sollecito that's coming uf after

involved. so we're tracking that right now. cal train service is at least stopped for the northbound trains. expect both directions to be slow. again we're tracking that for the rails. here the bay bridge toll plaza, the backup here. the metering lights orin. they were turned on with a crash. that cleared, the crew made it over there to the san francisco side. it was not before this backup and the meetering lights on. the map will show you that it's slow on the bridge incline toward treasure island. the approach off the berkeley curve, berkeley itself is all right. 24 out of the caldecott. 880 and 580 smooth through oakland. a smooth drive, these speeds showing you in the green, your commute direction north and south through downtown. good stuff. as we look out to the other maps a footh flow around that castro

a tragic and bizarre story out of canada. authorities say a woman was strangled to death after her scarf and hair became tangled in a moving escalator. it happened at a subway station in montreal during yesterday morning's commute. witnesses say lots of people tried to help as the 48-year-old died at the scene. a spokesperson for the ambulance service says he's never seen anything like it in his 30-year

morning emergency crews were called to the scene. by that time firefighters say the garage was engulfed. it went to two alarms, due in part because this is a compact neighborhood. the homes are close to each other. they were able to put it out in about 40 minutes. there were four people inside the home when crews arrived. all of them got out safely although one person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. it was neighbors who also jumped in to help. one man dialed 911 while others tried their best to alert those inside. >> we were throwing rocks from the street and we were in our neighbor's yard trying to find rocks that were big enough. the fire spread pretty fast. we didn't want to get too close. >> reporter: crews are trying to determine what caused this fire. the home actually has a "for sale" sign on the front lawn, so very unfortunate circumstances for the homeowners here. and by the looks of things, looks like firefighters will be out here for quite some time.

not before that brunt of the traffic flow coming in before it hit. the maze moves smooth, so does the east shore freeway. it's friday light. so these areas will be smooth, it's not till the toll plaza you see the backup is slow from oakland into san francisco. an issue on the peninsula as well. look at the rest of the commute, mostly green but along the peninsula in redwood city a possible incident involving possibly a pedestrian i should say. cal train reports that. the trains are south to san carlos or north to menlo park, then turning around and doing local all the way back for the local stops because they are not traveling through the area while an investigation continues. that's for caltrain riders. your travel speeds along the peninsula moving smooth. 101 and 280 in the green zone as we showed you. in the south bay we have north 101 at 680 where we see slowing on a friday not there. blips for 87, 280, 17 and just a little blip, a smooth drive

through the tri-valley. good flow for 590 over to the same area we showed you. slowing at the castro valley y, a look at the dublin camera as well. this is mild for this portion but low cloud cover. not an issue for drivers. that's left from yesterday. i like leftovers especially with cranberries on. >> new updates from san francisco general hospital. about a patient who walked away from major surgery, this is yesterday. she has not been seen since. christie smith live this morning about what the hospital just told her about the new security procedures. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. i just spoke with a spokesperson for sf general. what they say is yes, they do believe even in light of what's happened here that the new security procedures are working, that the staff immediately work with the sheriff's department, launched a vigorous search to try and locate the woman who was

missing, that is 34-year-old valerie gates. and this is in line with their new procedures. that a missing persons report was filed with the police department, all in line with their strengthened aol -- awol policy. gates was in good condition when she chose to leave before her treatment was concluded at the hospital. police, though, say she is homeless, that she walked away yesterday from sf general with a bandage on her neck, 5'3" inches, 120 pounds, she left after she had surgery though they are not saying what it was. this comes after the hospital made an overhaul to its security procedures because patient lynn spaulding left her bed last september and was found dead a few weeks later in a stairwell. in that case, though, the grounds were not completely searched here at the hospital. san francisco police tell us that they are looking for valerie gates, that she frequents the tenderloin so that is an area they are focusing on.

of course if any one has seen her asked to give police a call. christie smith, "today in the bay." san francisco police are also looking for suspects they say opened fire on a car. two victims were driven to sf general hospital in this car. you saw the windshield riddled with bullet holes. the shooting happened about a mile away on turner terrace in the city's potrero hill neighborhood last night. as of now no update on the victims an it's unclear how many were in the car at the time of the shooting. investigators remained on scene overnight looking for evidence. uc-berkeley tam hall will be open following a chemical spill. a student accidentally spilled a bottle of a acid mixture. crews worked to neutralize and clean up the spill. no word how many were in the building at the time but nobody was hurt. >> toyota stopped sales on six

of its best selling models in the u.s. and canada because of a problem with heated seats. peggy bunker live in san jose with the latest. so many people drive those cars. >> reporter: that's true, laura, they are very popular. of course one of the best parts after morning commute especially if it's chilly is throwing 0en the seat warmers, jumping in to hit the road. this morning toyota tells some of the dealerships that they are to perform a stop sell on certain models because of faulty fabric resting against the heaters. this is affecting a lot of unsold toyotas, about 36,000. that's about 13% of dealer inventory. so that really stings dealerships like this one in san jose. only vehicles made in toyota's u.s. plants are equipped with heated seats that are equipped with those are impacted by this stop sale. let's give you specifics in case you have one of these cars at home. the models being put on the off

sale list, the 2012-14 models of the camry, that is the best selling car though only about 6% actually have heated seats. 2013-14 avalon, siennas and tacoma and 2014 corolla and tundras have the issue. toyota says the issue doesn't warrant a recall, that the safety administration might disagree. they will make the final decision when it comes to recalls. the stop sale order comes on the same day toyota announces their global production topped 10 mill indian units last season. it's amazing how many cars out there are sold by toyota. if you wonder this morning i'm getting ready to walk out the door, jump in the car, can i turn on my seat heaters in my toyota? this is a corolla. there have been no issues, no incidents that they are aware of in fact that's what they are trying to tell the administration that will make this recall decision. so far they heard of no issue.

sarah joins us from new york city. the big game, looks like it's going to be spared the freezing temperatures they were predi predicting earlier. >> reporter: looks like we're going to luck out, scott and laura. temperatures right now forecasted to be in the mid to upper 40s, we're even going to see some sun. that is a huge improvement over the beginning of this week when fans were starting to arrive and shocked by temperatures in the teens. this is good news because this is the first open air cold weather stadium super bowl in nfl history, and a lot of the activities and fun leading up to the game also taking place outside. behind me is what used to be broadway, now transformed into super bowl boulevard. it's a 13-block stretch of activities and fun for fans including a big toboggan ride, you can visit the vince lombardi trophy, leading up to sunday's game and the halftime show, we're learning more about that. it's going to be bruno mars and the red hot chili peppers.

opera soprano is going to perform the national anthem accompanied by the new jersey symphony. should be fun and just beautiful performances that night. and if you want to go to the super bowl and you have the cash, there are still tickets available. right now they are running about $2800 per ticket average. seems pricey but that is actually not as expensive as some years past. some brokers say sales were sluggish last week, they blame the weather. people waiting to see what it was going to be like for the game. you remember at one point they were thinking possibly about postponing it. now that the forecast is good and everything is on, those ticket brokers say sales are picking right back up for this game and so a lot of fun when the seahawks and the broncos face off this sunday. scott and laura, back to you. >> won't have to worry about the lights going out. thank you. >> i hope you didn't fix it. it won't happen here. >> super bowl 50 two years away.
