meteorologist christina loren. good monday morning. we saw some rain. >> yes, we did. over 1.5 inches of rain in half moon bay. it was a super soaker especially at the coast. we've got more on the way. we're not just talking about with light rain shower, we're talking about another round of heavy precipitation. this morning you can probably ditch that umbrella at least for now. we're going to see isolated activity but if you have a hoody or something over your hair even if it's a newspaper as you run outside you should be okay. 54 degrees. it's going to be chilly in san francisco. 57 the south bay and the peninsula will hit about 57. we're going to talk about when the next round of rain moves in in my next report. count on ponding, areas where the puddles have not had a chance to dry out. >> good morning. talk about newspapers over the head when the kids are watching they say what? toward the bay bridge, we do have overnight construction. that's the only thing.

it's westbound, i'm looking at the incline around the bend where we see the flashing lights, i don't see any but they may have a crew heading to san francisco. that's the only thing going on overnight for that crew. that's not a problem. that's good news. the map shows off 24 down the east shore freeway and nothing a big deal on the map. yellow dipping down below 60, light flow of traffic. the orange indicates some fog that might be in place. weather and traffic have the systems tied together. a look from the camera in san rafael in the next report. >> we do have breaking news out of russia this morning where a student has been arrested after shooting and killing a teacher and a police officer at a moscow school. investigators say the student entered the school carrying a rifle and held 20 students and a teacher hostage. he killed the teacher and an officer responding to the scene. another officer was wounded in that shooting as well. no students were hurt and so far no motive has been released it comes with russia in the global

spotlight three days before it hosts the winter games in sochi. >> also new this morning, firefighters in the south bay are mopping up after an overnight fire in san jose. the fire broke out at the glennford park court. this is near the corner of vista park and branham lane. fire officials say most of the damage was in one bedroom and nobody was hurt. >> in napa a mother and a boyfriend are behind bars in connection with the killing and sexual assault of the mother's 3-year-old daughter. last night family and friends held a vigil at the apartment complex on wilkins avenue where the little girl was found. 23-year-old sarah krueger and her boyfriend ryan warner were arrested yesterday at the b.a.r.t. station after being on the run for a day. the murder investigation began on saturday when police got an anonymous tip asking for a welfare check. they found the young girl dead

in her bed. police say they found evidence of blunt force trauma and sexual assault. >> the proudest moment of my life is gone forever and there is nothing we can do or say that can bring her back. i hope nobody ever has to go through this. >> no word when the couple will face charges in court. >> police are trying to figure out who shot and killed two people, one of them just a teenager outside of a boys and girls club in oes oakland. police say the shooting happened just before 11:00 saturday night at 24th and market. the two male victims were pronounced dead at the scene. they were shot multiple times. police identified the teenager but they are not releasing his name until they are sure the family is notified. the other victim hasn't been identified so. far this year there are 11 homicides in oakland. a teen charged with stabbing a student to death could enter a plea in court. prosecutors say that duc tong stabbed richard phan during a

birthday party. phan was killed trying to break up a fight. tong's twin brother was arrested and later released. >> friday night a boy walked in the university village in albany. it's off interstate 580. police say a man driving a black suv pulled up along side the teen and ordered him in the vehicle. when the teen refused the man got out and grabbed the boy and tried to force him into the suv. the boy was able to get away without being hurt. >> in the north bay the search is on for a suspected arsonist. police in petaluma say someone started a fire on a doorstep in a home in aspen way. people living in the home woke up to the smell of smoke early saturday morning. it appears authorities say, flammable liquid was used to start the door mat on fire. >> it's a year since two police

officers were gunned down in the line of duty but families have not received any of the money raised in their honor. sergeant baker and detective butler were killed last february. the city collected more than $550,000 in donations for their families. santa cruz sentinel reports the delay was caused by a lack of planning by city officials and police union leaders. the union is proposing to split the money when the families. >> uc-berkeley students sending a message to president obama, just say no to the keystone pipeline project. students and staff will gather for a protest strijle this evening, 6:00 p.m. calling on president obama to reject the pipeline after the state department's final environmental review opened the way for approval of that project. the controversial project would take oil from canada south to

the gulf coast. protesters argue the pipe line would substantially worse cashen solution. >> the town's new bag ban ordinance was approved in august of last year. it bans all retailers except dry-cleaners, restaurants and thrift stores from providing free plastic bags. grocery stores may only use paper and those will be sold for 10 cents. >> what about the football game. you watch it? >> i watched up to the third quarter. then i called it a night. >> seahawks fans probably sleeping in a little bit this morning. after a definite long night of celebration. >> fireworks erupting. look at that from the top of the space needle moments after the team won its first super bowl title ever. trouncing the denver broncos, 43-8. >> soon after thousands of people took to the streets, this is video from the university of washington.

student there is started fires, setting couches and other pieces of furnish ablaze as firefighters and police in riot gear tried to control the crowd. >> celebrations in the street of downtown seattle. maybe jumping on cars trying to get through. as of right now seattle police say really no major problems, no word on any arrests either. >> as for the game, total blow-out. look at this. 12 seconds into the game first snap goes over the head of peyton manning into the safety. fastest scoring play in super bowl history. and things got worse. seattle's number one defense proved too much for manning and the broncos. manning gets hit and is picked off by smith, takes it 69 yards for the score. smith would be named super bowl mvp as he led the seahawks to a 43-8 victory. both smith and head coach pete carroll will hold a news

conference later this morning. >> for tens of thousands of fans getting into metlife stadium went smoothly. getting out that was a different story. after the game, fans converged on the rail station really clogging that platform there. the new jersey transit agency brought in more than 50 buses just to try to shuttle those fans to the port authority terminal in new york city. the backup was finally cleared about two hours later. >> the weather not an issue as originally expected but today the area is expected to get up to six inches of fresh snow. >> that was good timing. i did notice christina, that the red hot chili peppers i said they couldn't go out shirtless burt 46 degrees, that was warm. >> i think you referred to them as the luke warm chilly peppers. but yeah, anthoniant keep the shirt on no matter what. half moon bay over an inch and a half of rain. we were dumped on. i think the rain was a bigger

topic than the football game was. san mateo picked up over an inch. a half inch in san ramon and in the south bay in san jose we registered with a fresh quarter of precipitation. it's going to take a while for the puddles to dry out. mike and i are all over that for you. we're looking pretty good. temperatures starting out in the 40s. it's cold, one of the coldest mornings in quite some time. we're going to drop in the 30s before all is said and done. highs today definitely much cooler than where we have been. we'll end up in the 50s. upper 50s in the south bay. and low 50s in some of your cities right by the water. if you live on the ocean side of san francisco, count on a cool day with plenty of low clouds filtering in, all afternoon long. east bay and tri-valley, same deal, typically we get warm out in pleasanton. 57 degrees all you're going to hit today. so really staying below average

just about all week long. so, let's talk about where we're headed. a round of rain comes as we head throughout your wednesday. take it right to the futurecast. this is just the beginning. i can tell you right now i'm looking at your futurecast for sunday, monday, tuesday into ski week and we're talking about the storm track staying way to the south. we could potentially get dumped on again. i say bring it on. we're still in that drought. we stop the clock at 2:00 p.m. on wednesday. showers come back in the mix, we keep the showers going for thursday, another round comes through sunday into monday, and like i said before, the storm window stays open, and we're going to get a lot more snow and rain here in the bay area. we'll talk about that coming up. it's great news especially on a monday. mondays can be tough. >> they can be especially if it's not happening now. a little time to prepare. we do look here toward the north bay. we showed you there was fog reported. we see a glow to lights. we did have more glowing lights. southbound lights now starting

to clear up as far as the view but the map still shows southbound 101 through san rafael fog in the area. it shifted farther north and west as well so. that would be indicate bid that live view. a smooth flow not a problem, the fog in novato into san rafael. the rest of the north bay moving and clear across the carquinez and benicia bridges into the east bay out of the north. the tri-valley, you're in the green zone. the 84 at 55 miles per hour. that's because you are at a large surface street coming through the windy roads through livermore and pleasanton. so wouldn't be safe to go faster. a live view out toward 580 where i showed you at the speed limit. all of this space between the cars, good stuff out of the altamont pass. hey, i got reports of a car fire between the caldecott and the maze so i'll give you that coming up. >> with mike, thank you. google expanding its ferry service this morning. >> historic day as the first woman to lead the federal reserve is sworn in. >> and what we're learning about the sudden death of actor philip seymour hoffman.

bay terminal in alameda to the port of redwood city. it does not expect the five-day trial run to impact riders or parking. google will provide off-site parking and a shuttle service for employees who are not allowed to park in the harbor bay ferry lot. >> the days of free parking, over at the large ferry terminal. riders have to pay an additional $2 to park their car. those who choose not to pay will be fined $45. riders can buy $20 monthly parking pass which would drop the fee to $1 a day. the fee is expected to generate $400,000 a year for the golden gate bridge district facing a deficit. >> in about 90 minutes janet yellen will be sworn in as the head of the federal reserve. yellen is the former head of the federal reserve bank in san francisco and the uc-berkeley professor. for more on that and the rest of the news before the bell, kayla

tausche live at cnbc headquarters. good morning. >> good monday morning to you, scott. futures lower after the markets ended january on a chilly note. disappointing earnings, fed decision to continue cutting its stimulus efforts and worries over the health of the emerging markets have all been prompting investors to sit the sell button. the dow dropping last month. today we get data on manufacturing and construction spending, the dow falling 150 points friday to 15,699, the nasdaq shedding 19 to 4104. janet yellen will be sworn in this morning after officially taking over for ben bernanke. the first woman to lead the fed, she'll testify before congress for the first time in her new role about the economy and fed policy next week. no doubt she has her work cut out for her. citigroup is launching a app

the opposite pattern. cooler than average weather all week, a fair amount of cloud cover each and every morning. and that will make way to a sunny finish most of the days. we're going to bring the rain back as we head throughout late wednesday into thursday. that's just the first round of systems that we're expecting as we head throughout the next couple days. let's time that out for you. look at all that snowfall headed toward sierra nevada. even more today, about six additional inches of powder before that cutoff low heads out. that's great news. for us today we're going to continue to stay dry, holding off on the showers until 2:00 p.m. on wednesday. but hey, we're getting into the 72-hour range. rain is likely going to continue as we meet back on thursday morning. and take a look at this. this is a cold system. we could accumulate additional one to two feet of powder as we head throughout thursday. can't wait till that sun comes up because we're going to see the two inches of snow on top of mt. hamilton. the seven-day forecast at the
