al roker and natalie morales. we're in studio 1-a. did you watch the game last night? wasn't it 3:00 in the morning there? >> it started at 3:30 in the morning here, so the short answer is, no, i actually woke up at about 4:30, checked my phone and saw it was getting a little out of hand score wise, i did not bother to get up. let me tell you about the view we got here. got the olympic medal plaza in the background, the caldron there, the blue building in the background, the iceberg, figure skating and short track skating to be held there. and up in the distance, how about that backdrop? those are the mountains, not of sochi, the snow-covered mountains of georgia. the mountains of sochi to the right here, savannah. >> geography lesson, matt giving us the lay of the land. it looks beautiful there. it was clear skies last night, game time for the super bowl. 49 degrees. >> it was warmer in new york than it was in denver and seattle. >> oh, man, look at metlife stadium this morning, what a difference.

34 degrees, snow is falling, and, apparently, we're going to have a lot more of that. >> yeah. it's going to be changing very quickly here in new york city. in fact, schools canceled all around new york city, not in the city yet. we are in the weather channel calling this first storm maximus, second storm nitka. let's show you what maximus caused for our friends in arkansas yesterday. 4 to 6 inches of snow causing massive traffic headaches. dozens and dozens of accidents being reported. a lot of big problems, cars off into the ditch. and this is making its way to the east. and they're going to get hit with the second storm nitka. let's show you, we have two winter storms. that's our "today's" top weather story. and you can already see, it's starting to make its way into the northeast. so we are looking at a storm system that is going to really be very dynamic. there you can see the rain/snow line.

it's now making its way south of new york city. so here we go. we have winter storm warnings stretching from long island all the way back to lexington, kentucky. in the new england winter weather advisories in effect. here's what we're looking for snowfall wise. generally about 3 to 6 inches of snow, 6 to 9 inches of snow, new york city on down into washington, d.c. then our second storm system getting itself together. winter storm watches, winter weather advisories, winter storm warnings from tuesday into wednesday as we get the future cast cranked up. you can see snow in the rockies making its way across omaha into st. louis, chicago, cleveland, all the way into new york. look at these snowfall totals. we are talking about 9 to 12 inches of snow in northern missouri as we make our way to the east. central indiana, into ohio, another 9 to 12 inches of snow. and then look at when we get into the northeast. we are expecting by wednesday, new york, another 6 to 9 just to

the west. this is a foot to a foot and a half in central pennsylvania. and, folks, let's look live at philadelphia. this is what's happening right now. philadelphia schools are now canceled, as well. this is going to be a set-up for a real week of misery. and -- and the models are suggesting, guys, that late this weekend into next week, we could have a blockbuster of a coastal storm where we will be talking about snow in feet. >> al, go back to bed and come back with a better forecast. >> i saw my shadow. >> clearly, six more weeks. >> that groundhog was right. >> i'm going to find him and smack his mama. >> please do. al will be back here with you in a few moments. >> the nfl has to be happy this storm was not on sunday. but the broncos may be wishing it was.

jshlgs jenna is at metlife stadium with more. >> reporter: good morning to you. yeah, the folks from the nfl super bowl committee are out buying lottery tickets right now after missing the storm. from the day the game was announced, weather was the only thing anyone was talking about. it turns out, weather wasn't a factor yesterday, it was 49 degrees at kickoff. you know what else wasn't a factor? the denver broncos. >> and that's -- should be it. >> reporter: the seattle seahawks didn't just win super bowl xlviii, they dominated. >> snapped over the head! >> started just 12 seconds into the game when they scored a safety. the fastest score in super bowl history. the seahawks turned that into a 22-0 lead at halftime. >> touchdown, seattle! >> reporter: and speaking of halftime -- ♪ bruno mars and the red hot chili

peppers rocked metlife stadium. it was more seahawks in the second half. in fact, an 87-yard kickoff return started the half. four turnovers by denver left no doubt as the seahawks cruised for their first ever super bowl title. >> touchdown, seattle! >> reporter: the victory followed by euphoric chaos on the field. or in other words, it was unbelievable. >> how does it feel to be the part of a team that wins the first franchise super bowl? >> it's undescribable. we made history today. point-blank, we made history today. the first ever title for seattle. it's unbelievable. >> i don't really have too many words to describe it. it's unbelievable. >> describe all of this tonight. >> honestly, words can't describe. >> richard sherman with much to say after his last game left this one early with an ankle

injury and was far more gracious this time around. >> it's been a lot of fun, man. it's been really humbling. you learn a lot about yourself. >> reporter: in the end, it was seahawks from start to finish. they came, conquered, and collected their first ever lombardi trophy. on this night, there were angels on the field and off it, as well. >> reporter: the one name we didn't hear much about yesterday was peyton manning. he had a great year statistically in the regular season, a good game yesterday, but at 37, you have to wonder how many years he has left in the nfl. we shall see. for now, i'll play in the snow and be happy today was not yesterday. savannah, back to you. >> jenna, thank you so much. going to have a lot more on the game and everybody's favorite commercials coming up later. but for now, we want to head to matt in sochi. >> all right. savannah, thanks very much. there was an alarming hostage situation in russia overnight. and when the news first broke of this, we thought it could be

related to the start of the games in just three days. it turned out to be something very different. we have jim maceda live in moscow this morning. jim, good morning, what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, that's right, this turned out to be a disgruntled student who apparently according to eyewitnesss had a conflict with his high school geography teacher. he stormed the school today firing from two rifles as he made his way to the classroom and his teacher where he shot and killed that teacher and opened fire on police who had responded to an alarm killing one and wounding another. he held about 20 other students hostage until the shooter was persuaded to give up. again, matt, not a terror attack, but still a very scary and rare incident here in moscow where everyone's a little nervous. matt, back to you. >> jim, thank you very much. as we said, it does highlight the security concerns here in sochi as the games are set to begin. athletes are now arriving, fans are arriving.

journalists are also arriving. and the big question remains, is this region ready? the mountains blanketed in snow and inviting members of team usa who have already touched down in sochi. >> i've never been to russia. this is my first day on the mountain and there's so much powder. >> reporter: with a $50 billion price tag, these are the most expensive games in history. but there are indications that not all of sochi is ready for its closeup. there are 41,000 hotel rooms here, almost all of them brand new. so new, in fact, many are still without furniture. it continues to arrive. a frenzy of activity still ongoing in olympic park and surrounding roads. some olympians and spectators may never actually see the town of sochi, warned to stay away as security concerns linger. behind me is the main security

check point to get in and out. there are several of them, but that's the main one. if you drive there with a vehicle, you get out of the car. the car is checked from top to bottom. they open the doors, the trunk, the engine compartment. they look inside it all. take mirrors and go underneath the car looking for any explosive device or anything that might be attached to the undercarriage of the vehicle. the people go into a separate building, you put your credentials in a scanner to make sure you're legitimate. you're then sent through a metal detector, wanded and patted down. they not only check your credentials coming into the park, but going out, as well. >> reporter: between $5 billion and $6 billion has been spent to ensure the safety of these games. >> some of the security precautions you might not notice. i'm in a grassy field in the middle of olympic park and the manhole covers have been foamed and glued closed. not just one, but every single one.

foamed and glued to make sure nobody can open them up and hide something inside. the ioc promises despite last-minute glitches, the games are in good hands. >> they will put on a great show. >> reporter: 25,000 volunteers have been trained to help make sure that happens. state of the art venues are ready and so are the athletes who begun to train here. >> and just be in the olympic spirit again. >> i mentioned the athletes had begun to train here. they've begun to arrive here. we've got some members of the women's bobsled team, men's bobsled team, they're all here on the plaza with us in sochi. nice to see you all. we will get to talk to them in just a little while. but right now, savannah, back to you in new york. >> thanks so much. and we take a turn now to the tragic and surprising death of one of the most talented actors in hollywood, oscar winner philip seymour hoffman.

he was just 46 years old and his body was found in his new york city home on sunday. nbc's kristen dahlgren joins us with the story. kristen, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. take a look, you can see a memorial growing here outside philip seymour hoffman's apartment. this was an actor who could play so many different roles, appeal to so many different people. this morning, all shock that he is gone. fans of philip seymour hoffman could only watch as new york police sealed off his greenwich village apartment. the actor, just 46, dead of an apparent drug overdose. according to police sources, hoffman was found by a friend in the bathroom. >> he was found in a t-shirt and shorts with a needle in his left arm, and envelopes nearby that are believed to have heroin in them. >> reporter: hoffman was known as an actor's actor, he could disappear into almost any role.

from his oscar winning turn in "capote," to lester bangs in "almost famous." >> you take drugs? >> no. >> smart kid. >> reporter: he appealed to younger fans portraying plutarch heavensbee in the "hunger games: catching fire." the role he was in the middle of reprising in mocking jay parts one and two. >> he had seven days left to film that, but as far as we know film production says they will not delay the release of the film. >> reporter: the actor who was also a three-time tony nominee for his work on broadway was most recently seen at sundance promoting "a most wanted man." but off camera, the star was fighting a battle with addiction. after more than two decades of sobriety, he reportedly relapsed and checked himself into rehab last year. in a statement, his family said, we are devastated by the loss of our beloved phil. this is a tragic and sudden loss. and we ask you respect our privacy during this time of grieving. please keep phil in your thoughts and prayers. >> reporter: now, an autopsy is scheduled for later today.

key figures around governor christie, well many of those are due back to new jersey lawmakers today. while the governor enjoyed the big game this weekend and played his own offense. chris christie had something to cheer about at the biggest party as new jersey hosted super bowl xlviii. this weekend, the governor's team ran a new political play striking back at ex-port authority official david wildstein after his lawyer floated in a letter that evidence exists chris christie knew about the traffic mess while it was happening last fall. christie denies that. the lawyer made the allegations in a letter demanding the port authority pay wildstein's legal bills. new jersey lawmakers say wildstein has produced no new evidence. >> nothing that says the governor knew contemporaneously which is the allegation he's making now. >> reporter: christie had already distanced himself from wildstein who had supervised the lane closures, both attended the same high school. >> david and i were not friends in high school, we were not even

acquaintances in high school. >> but high school came back in a stinging memo sent to christie supporters saturday that stated david wildstein will do and say anything to save david wildstein. the memo listed a series of criticisms of wildstein's work and character including this. he was publicly accused by his high school social studies teacher of deceptive behavior. >> reporter: and we attempted to reach david wildstein about that memo. we were unsuccessful. governor christie says he knew nothing about the plot behind the traffic scandal until that news broke about a month ago. natalie? >> kelly o'donnell in ft. lee, new jersey, thanks so much, kelly. a manhunt underway in the midwest this morning for an escaped killer. officials say michael david eliot was discovered missing sunday from a michigan prison where he'd been serving a life sentence for murder. he's believed to be armed. eliot allegedly carjacked a woman's vehicle nearby. the woman got away unhurt in

the worst encounter she describes was in an attic. but inappropriate behavior, quote, happened so often, i thought it was how fathers doted on their daughters. over the weekend, allen ignored questions. >> you don't have any comment about dylan's letter? >> reporter: but ever since the claims surfaced years ago, he has vehemently denied the allegations and never been charged with a crime. his publicist responded to dylan's letter saying mr. allen has read the article and found it untrue and disgraceful. a thorough investigation was conducted by court appointed independent experts. the experts concluded there was no credible evidence of molestation, that dylan farrow had an inability to distinguish between fantasy and reality and dylan farrow had likely been coached by her mother mia farrow. >> i think it's safe to say that woody allen is an anomaly. >> reporter: after he honored a few weeks ago, mia farrow

i mean, it is a whiteout out there. and we're quickly starting to see the streets be covered in midto midtown manhattan. in fact, snowfall amounts generally speaking, we're looking at about 3 to 6 inches of snow throughout much of the northeast. but out on long island could be 6 to 9 inches. high temperatures, here's the big problem. temperatures are going to be dropping. 31, pittsburgh, 33, cincinnati, charlotte, 61, 33 in new york, atlanta, 60, watch this. look at that, 14-degree difference in the last 24 hours. 25 degree difference in washington, 15 degree difference in cincinnati. as this system makes its way in, it's going to find a receptive atmosphere to produce copious amounts of snow and ice. we're going to continue to 7:35 on a back to work monday. yeah, these are not your current

good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yeah. take a look, a small memorial here outside philip seymour hoffman's apartment. the oscar winner was just 46 years old. one of the most diverse actors of our time appearing in films like "capote," "the master." he was in the middle of filming the last two movies in the "hunger games" series when he was found by a friend dead on sunday morning of an apparent drug overdose. reports say he was found with bags of what appeared to be heroin. celebrities have been taking to twitter to offer up condolences and make their grief public. his family also released a statement saying they are devastated. that family included three young children. >> such a sad loss. kristen dahlgren, thank you. one of the judges in the amanda knox case is coming under fire for talking about the case to italian newspapers. on thursday, knox and her former

boyfriend were found guilty for a second time of murder. one of the judges said the verdicts were difficult and said he agreed knox had something to do with the murder and criticized sollecito for not testifying in his own defense. attorneys say the comments show clear evidence of prejudice. amanda knox' lawyer says knox will continue fighting for her innocence. a lot of seahawks fans were sleepless in seattle overnight celebrating their team's first super bowl victory. seattle's legion of boom crushed peyton manning and the broncos at metlife stadium in new jersey. crowds poured into the streets shortly thereafter. the fireworks soared from the city's landmark, the space needle. the official victory parade is being planned for wednesday. rescuers are searching for more victims after indonesia's volcano erupted there this weekend spewing toxic clouds of hot gas. at least 15 people were killed. another volcano in ecuador had three moderate eruptions.

keep an eye on this blue line here. that's what we call the 540 line, that's the freezing line. this is the euro. by wednesday morning, this storm is off the coast and, boom, keeps going. thursday, then we get a second system developing down here, saturday morning, down around the gulf coast. and, boom, look at this, the 540 line is south of here, 12:00 noon. a very, very strong storm developing with a lot of snow with it. so the gfs model, that one brings this system, this first one out, boom, there goes mika. and down to the south, here we are, again, developing along new orleans. and then, as we get on into sunday, we see that thing still down to the south. so the european model much more aggressive. we're going to have to wait and see. but it looks like we've got a very volatile situation heading into next week.

♪ back now at 8:43. a familiar face to millions, tony dungy made history with the indianapolis colts in 2007 when he became the first african-american head coach to lead his team to a super bowl victory. he's now an analyst for nbc's "football night in america." and his wife lauren has been by his side for good times and bad for over 30 years. and they wrote a new book "uncommon marriage." tony and lauren. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> not talking super bowl just yet here this morning. but i was struck by your story. 31 years later how you two are still together. you've raised nine kids together. the book is called "uncommon marriage." what do you think it is that keeps you two together through it all? you've had good times and bad. >> well, two things, natalie, number one is commitment. being determined to stay together no matter what. and number two, putting christ

in the center of our life. that's kind of what the book is all about. >> yeah. there's a lot of faith in the book, as well. you've had to keep the faith many times. i know, lauren, when you first met this guy, you were introduced by your pastor. and you weren't so sure about him. here he was, football, pro footballer, thinking at the time, i think, kind of not your kind of guy, right? >> i wasn't excited about a jock and raising a family with three brothers that were definitely jocks. i thought, i'll pass on this guy. and, you know, see what else there is out there. >> you did have your differences in the beginning. what were some of those differences? and having to sort of bring you together? lauren, you first. >> just different personalities. i'm more energetic and outgoing and laid back. but we found over time that spending time together, we actually complemented each other. >> and that's what we found over the years, god does put you

together. and when you have those differences, it's not like, oh, well, this is terrible. ends up making the marriage better because you get the best of both worlds. >> you really get kind of both sides of this. and lauren, i know, for you, the years that tony spent as a football coach were not easy years. you're talking about moves, pittsburgh, kansas city, minnesota, tampa, indianapolis, you struggled with this lifestyle and you write about that. tell me about those years. >> it definitely was challenging. i was raising the children on my own. and i felt i had all the responsibilities of taking care of the households. so it can be challenging. but we learned to work together on that. and we've stressed communicating and so it was important that we talked on the phone. and he knew what was going on at home. and i also knew what was going on at work. i was involved in his life, as well, to be supportive and understanding. >> and tony, also, a difficult time in your lives when you experienced the loss of your son

jamie who committed suicide in 2005. and you wrote about this. you both write about it in this book very candidly and it's very emotional, obviously, experience you had. i know you wanted to help other people by talking about the grief you felt. >> and grief is one of the things that can split couples. and you do grieve differently. but i think the lord allowed us to go through it so we could help other people. and part of the process was learning that you can make it through if you draw closer together. >> and i know, lauren, you both feel that writing this book that you have -- you really feel that you have a story to tell. that you hope will help others. what is the message you wanted to share? >> definitely the message is that we have to communicate with one another. we need to make sure that we're talking on a daily basis. and otherwise, you can grow apart. he can get involved in his career and i can get involved in the children and whatever i'm doing. and before you know, it, we're leading separate lives.

different as well as the push athletes. >> how much time do you get to prepare on this track at sochi before the actual competition begins? >> i think we've had 36 runs so far. so we get -- >> that's over the course of what period of time? >> maybe last four years. >> four years? >> 36 trips. we've got four more, probably saturday and then it's time to roll. >> yeah. and there are people obviously that are going to watch this, steve, they're going to say this is mind boggling to watch, the speeds at some tracks get over 90 miles an hour. here, it's about 85 miles an hour. for people who will never get the chance to sit in the bobsled as it hurritles down, compare i to something. >> i'd say it's like the fastest, craziest roller coaster you could ever find in an amusement park. >> no seat belts. >> no seat belts, no padding, couple of handles and fiberglass. >> there are times, and some of you know about this, that you

the first thing you see, the credentials, walk out the front door and here you are at the winter olympic games looking at a pair of palm trees. i think i got a shot of that i posted to twitter yesterday. this is, at the end of the day, a coastal town. it's a beach town where people come in the summer. the black sea a couple of hundred yards the other side of me. and you see behind me, you have the mountains. it's a mix of sea and beautiful snow-capped mountains where the skiing will take place up there. i'm standing right now in olympic park. the first of its kind for a winter games where you have everything within walking distance. the hockey arena is here. there's curling, speed skating, the big stadium where the opening and closing ceremonies will take place are right there. and it's all, guys, about a driver away from each other. it's really cool, really accessible, really workable for people who don't even know where we are to begin with. sochi is in the southwest part of russia. it's down on the black sea. the climate is more like the

time about three hours ago, the streets were wet, the snow is coming down about 1 to 2 inches per hour. winter storm warnings, winter weather advisories from kentucky all the way to new england. snowfall amounts generally about 3 to 6 inches of snow. however, we do have heavier amounts throughout new york and new jersey on into connecticut. then the second winter storm, this would be mika, that's what we're calling it at the weather channel. winter weather advisories, they spread all the way across the midwest. storm gets itself together. snow in the rockies and then into the plains, in the upper midwest as this thing pushes up. and snowfall amounts, talking generally 6 to 9 inches. however, we could be seeing anywhere from 6 to 9 inches of snow to a foot and a half into central pennsylvania, new york, right around 3 to 6 inches. and so we're going to take a look in the next half hour, guys, at the next big storm that can happen

grade school, when they were young. cody got up about two months ago, man was choking to death, went right over and he saved him. >> heimlich. >> all those years before. >> it is empowering, that's for sure. >> it sounds weird, sometimes you're not sure if cpr is what the person needs. how do you know? >> you want to begin -- if you see somebody that falls and collapses you want to make certain they are unresponsive. make certain they're unresponsive. >> so what do you do? >> we train to use your personal protective equipment. if you don't have it, don't worry about it. but if you see someone down, tap them on the should and shout, are you okay? are you okay? >> okay. >> if there is no response, have someone call 911. you want emergency help as soon as you can. then you open the air way and check for breathing. you're looking toward the feet, looking for the rise and fall of the chest, listening for air to escape or feeling breath on your cheek. if you don't have any of those signs, do a quick look for severe bleeding and then start cpr. >> where do you put your -- the

these. if they have them, we recommend you use them. if you don't, don't worry about it. the other thing we have is compressions only cpr, someone untrained or unwilling to perform the rescue breath, keep doing the chest compression. >> and do it until somebody comes. >> keep doing this until somebody who is trained comes along and can take over for you. and until the scene becomes unsafe, or until an aed arrives and is able to -- use the aed the minute you get it. >> you did mention if you see bleeding, though, if you do see bleeding, should you not do the -- not attempt anything? >> no, you still want to get help, but also want to just deal with what is the most significant thing at the time. if there is severe bleeding, perhaps somebody else can help you try to suppress the bleeding by applying pressure. >> show us with the little babies. >> with the little baby, there are a few changes. that is you use your two fingers and then you put it in the center of the chest. and you're going to, again, do
