>> reporter: yeah, unexpected. he held a news conference a couple of hours ago and did not mention anything. but on the "today" show, which you'll see later today, he's dropping out of the slope style competition. we do not know why but he did injure his wrist during practice on the course. this course has proved to be very challenging borders. a finland boarder suffered a concussion and norwegian border broke his collarbone. she they have complained jumps are too steep and they'll make adjustments. 27-year-old white wants to focus on his signature event, the half pipe. he released this statement just in the past hour. after much deliberation with my team, i have made the decision to focus solely on the trying to bring home the third straight gold medal in the half pipe for team usa. this opens the door for the three remaining snowboarderser

in slope style. two of them, if you can believe it, from northern california. they are reno's chaz goldeman. we'll be following it closely. that's the latest from the sochi games. >> live from russia. good to have her there. the latest news. >> we get behind the scenes act as well. 5:02. coca-cola commercial that aired during the super bowl will be making a comeback during the opening to the sochi olympics. it's a commercial that sparked controversy when viewers first saw it during the super bowl. "today in the bay's" peggy bunker with a fifth grade who played a big role. >> that's the twist, the ad is called "it's beautiful" and simply, features one of america's most patriotic songs sung in eight different languages in people with different ethnicities.

♪ oh beautiful for spacious skies♪ >> this is one of the versions you see, they mixed it up with different languages, some english, some not. coke says the commercial's a tribute to the multi cultural makeup as well as acknowledgement of our immigrant history. within minutes of the commercial airing, angry viewers hit up twitter and facebook blasting the company for the mixed version, saying, coke, speak epg live. despite the controversy, the singing voices in the ad are beautiful. one of them belongs to a fifth grader from palo alto. here she is. she sang "america the beautiful" in arabic. she attends the stratford school in palo alto. she's the student body president. cute little girl. she will be getting a lot of attention for her role in the commercial. this is her school page there, giving her congratulations there. very proud of her. coke has decided they'll be

50s, as we head throughout the day today. it going to be warm. want to make sure you're ready for that, only in the south bay area. temperatures this morning, chilly. there we go. i appreciate that. hard to do this when i can't see anything. weather story of the day, rain is returning. you'll hear a lot about this. today is the last dry day. tonight into tomorrow, potentially one inch of rain on the valley floor. as we get into friday, a ridge builds in, that means a dry break. saturday into sunday, monday and tuesday, we tap into what we call the atmospheric river, talking about major, major downpours and potential for flooding in a very, very dry bay area. it's been so dry. now we're going to get hammered with storms. starting at this point tomorrow morning, though, it's going to be rough out there. let's check on your drive. mike inouye. thank goodness we have you. >> thank you for warning me about tomorrow morning. that will be a rougher drive.

right now, looking at westbound 580 with headlights, moving smoothly. picking up volume a bit. this is the first place you'll see slowing. just farther back on the map, see the altamont pass on the right coming into livermore. the arrow is where the camera was. so far, no problems. that yellow northbound 680, temporary blip will track that. over here, crash reported, eastbound 580 away from the maze that has cleared around grand avenue, no problems, no slowing. easy drive toward the bay bridge toll plaza. fog showing up on sensors. valle vallejo, napa. people got into a crash, there was thick fog, watch that. a car hit the fence for a vineyard and the person inside the car report lid drinking a

beer. don't mix those with driving at all. >> mike, thank you. 62-year-old shot by police in hayward overnight has died. the shooting happened last night at an apartment complex on foothill boulevard near grove way. "today in the bay's" christie smith live in hayward with details. >> reporter: this started with a request on a welfare check from another agency. she was apparently despondent and making a number of 911 calls to the dispatch center with complaints. hayward police are saying when they arrived at the woman's apartment, she flashed a handgun at them in a threatening manner. we have video of the ambulance that arrived to the apartments last night around 7:15. with the gun out, officers retreated to the parking lot commanding this woman to drop it. police say she came at them. they repeated the command to drop it, and they say that

fearing for their lives, one of the officers -- there were two -- one opened fire. here what happens neighbors heard. >> i heard about five gunshots. and they were back-to-back. and they sound so close, i knew it was very close. i couldn't see exactly where it came from. next thing i seen was officers crouched down by my car and going across the parking lot with his gun out. >> reporter: the 62-year-old woman transported to eden medical center, where she later died. police are investigating along with the alameda county district attorney's office, which is customary in officer-involved shootings. the hayward officer who opened fire has been with the department for one year. christie smith, "today in the bay." 5:08. the pleasanton teen accused of speeding when he hit and kill a

bicyclist last june will be in court for a preliminary hearing. charged with murder, driving 43 miles over the speed limit when he hit diana and her husband on foothill road. he boasted on twitter about speeding, and that led to the murder charge. police hope newly released images will help them track down a group of suspected, violent robbers in san jose. accused of seven armed holdups, including a carjacking last year. one of three suspects pistol-whipped and robbed several people. the crime spree started at 3:00 a.m. on october 27th. spanned the whole city. police say the suspects should be considered armed and very dangerous. palo alto has certainly seen a spike in crime. one of the latest, a purse snatching in the downtown area. police released this sketch of a man they say walked up behind a woman sitting in an outdoor table at a restaurant on

cuff with fellows. how about george lopez. he's second in command when it comes to entertaining the crowd. no, not him either. kr chronicle reports he was invited possibly because of a stand-up routine he had last year. they are rotating in fresh talent like peyton manning. he's going to be here this year who could use a change of scenery, sport, for that matter after sunday's shellacking in the super bowl. kid rock, kurt russell expected here this year. yesterday it was the 49ers versus the giants, san francisco giants in a golf fund-raiser that included both former and current players. the giants won, credit going to j.t. snow's chip shot to clinch the victory with $100,000 purse to be donated to several

the bell, kayla tausche. good morning. er. >> good morning. investors will be watching twitter with great interest but watching the market now. an hour before the open, futures are slightly lower, after stocks regained footing tuesday following monday's sell-off. investors shrugging off a report showing factory orders dropped in december. a revision on private sector payroll, it was down in the last month. we do get that data, that is moving the market now. we get data on the health of the nation's services or nonmanufacturing sector. earnings from merck, time warner, and disney in addition to twitter, which you mentioned. dow rising 72 points to 15445. that snapped the four-day run of triple digit moves. nasdaq closing up 34 to 4031. >> got the big jobs number on friday as well. >> that's right. busy week, especially for christina loren. we've had a dry start.

rain is coming. >> a lot of it. in fact i wouldn't be surprised to see pebble beach pro am canceled as we head through thursday. not surprised at all. this is just the first of a series of storms on the way to the bay area. 36 degrees in oakland now. 38 degrees in san jose. want to show you where we're headed. in south bay, temperatures are going to struggle to reach the low 50. by lunchtime, 57. heat hoff the day, between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. showers expected in the north bay. highs on the cool side. not too bad. little bit on the mild side along the peninsula, 58 degrees. 55 san francisco. cool enough to warrant a jacket all day. only place i think you need to take that umbrella to work with you is in the north bay. overall looks like showers will take their time to get into the bay area. mostly expecting first activity by 11:00 p.m. tonight. futurecast tells the story.

stop the clock at 11:30. widespread showers. bulk of the moisture comes through from the first system between 11:30 and 6:30 a.m. right in the heart of the morning drive. once that clears out, we could accumulate enough daytime heating for thunderstorms to develop and even friday morning, lingering shower activity. this is the first, like i said, of a series of storms and one that's next is packing a winter wallop. i'll let you know what that means for tahoe and the bay other for totals. hit that tivo, here's mike inouye to get out the front door. >> smooth drive now across the bay bridge. that's the westbound, incline towards treasure island. catch how quickly those taillights are moving towards san francisco. smooth flow. construction overnight right there, not causing a major problem but it will slowly drive westbound across the span. keep that in mind for the next ten minutes. look at the maps.

smooth flow. away from the bridge, eastbound 580, we had a crash that cleared north 880 slowing but crews clearing from that area. so we'll track that. it's early for showing congestion and slowing. less fog reported here by road weather index through vallejo. reported by the folks involved in the crash highway 37 westbound at 101. the crash on city streets not an issue, no injuries but alcohol reported. be careful. a quick look at north bay. we did have the fog reported. not a major problem. i'll see lights glowing more, still a smooth drive through san rafael taking the look into the city. looking at rest of the bay, smooth flow of traffic here as well as south bay where construction crews picking up at 880. asian mom and pop businesses will have a new mall of their own in the south bay. milpitas city council fas-traked

shaun white dropped out of after a wrist injury. he wants to focus on the half pipe and win his third cons consecutive gold medal. the women's figure skating competition will take place tomorrow in the iceberg skating pal lats, the m palace, saturday the ladies skate. team usa, ashley wagner of southern california, pressure is on this 22-year-old who fell twice in the national championship last month and placed fourth. some say she shouldn't have received a spot on team usa. wagner disagrees. >> i'm extremely competitive, an athlete through and through. i never go into an event saying fourth place sounds great. no, i'm here to get a medal, take names and be remembered. >> reporter: local gal, 15-year-old phenom, polina edmunds, will not compete in the team event. she just arrived in sochi last

good morning. thank you for joining us. i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. news out of sochi. hours before he was supposed to compete in the first ever slope style snowboarding event, shaun white pulling out of the competition. olympian did not cite injury, he did fall and jam his wrist during a practice run yesterday. this is a statement he gave nbc this morning, quote, after much deliberation with my team, i have made the decision to focus solely on trying to bring home the third straight gold medal in half pipe for team usa. white defending gold medalist in the half pipe, defending his third straight medal in that event, starting tuesday.

at an apartment complex on foothill boulevard near grove way. "today in the bay's" christie smith live in hayward, new information on the officer that pulled the driger. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we know he's been with the hayward police department for at least one year. but what hayward policery 15ing, two of the officers went to the woman's apartment for a welfare check last night but when they got there for some reason, this woman pulled a handgun out on them and displayed it in a threatening manner. police are saying that they retreated into the parking lot on foothill boulevard last night while giving commands to the woman to go ahead and drop that gun. this is around 7:15 when the whole thing started. instead of dropping the gun, she advanced towards those two officers and ignored orders to again put the gun down. that's when police say one officer, fearing for the lives of both officers, fired.

>> i heard five gunshots and they were back-to-back and they sounded so close. i knew it was very close. i couldn't see exactly where it came from. the next thing i seen was an officer crouched down by my car and going across the parking lot with his gun out. >> reporter: paramedics arrived at the scene quickly and took the woman to eden medical center, where she was pronounced dead later. a 62-year-old woman, her i didn't not released yet. again, this started when another police agency called hayward police and asked them to do a welfare check on this woman, because she had been calling their 911 dispatch center despondent and upset. i have calls in to hayward police, trying to find out more about the calls the woman initially made.

christie smith, "today in the bay." 5:33. police in san francisco looking for a hit-and-run driver who sent a pedestrian to the hospital. the car crashed into a man in his 50s about 2:30 this morning near the intersection of van ness avenue and grove street. the man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. he was in the crosswalk at the time of the crash. the driver took off from the scene. the crash comes as the city's focusing on pedestrian safety. yesterday leaders talked about a plan to make one safety improvement a month on san francisco's busiest streets. new video to show you. tow truck hauls away wreckage after a fiery crash in san jose's alma done neighborhood. you can see the burn marks on the car. one person was inside when it crashed. right now, it's unclear if that driver was injured. the cause of the crash is under investigation. 5:34. disturbing, new details in the

murder investigation of a 3-year-old in napa. the girl's mother and her boyfriend in jail, charged with murder. but court documents show the couple stored little kaleigh slusher's body in a suitcase in a freezer for days. napa police chief says officers went to the apartment just last wednesday to check on the girl. she was alive then. on saturday, police returned to the apartment and found her dead body. kaileigh's mother and live-in boyfriend made their first court appearance yesterday. they did not enter any pleas. 5:35. people in palo alto enhancing home security after a recent home invasion robbery, street robberies and spike in car break-ins. >> we had high hedges for privacy. we caught them down low. we put a security light in. >> if i'm upstairs and it's late, i'll look at the camera, if not, a look through the window. >> palo alto police offered safety tips last night. only open the door for people

you know. ignoring a knock can be dangerous because burglars are sometimes just looking for an empty house. cpr instructor in san jose could face disciplinary action for reportedly selling online cpr recertifications. rural/metro where the instructor works, says it made the discovery after reviewing internal records. investigators are trying to find out which emts bought recertification instead of earning it. the company made more than 100 emergency responders take a cpr course last weekend just in case. san jose firefighters have three months to make it right after the santa clara county board of supervisors found the departments failed to meet response times for the past 16 months. firefighters are required to respond to 911 calls within eight minutes 90% of the time. because the department missed the goal, the company's taken back more than $1 million in

incentive pay. if it meets response times for three straight months, the fire department can get the money back. 5:36. several state and federal officials will hold a briefing to talk about how to deal with california's drought. among those heading to sacramento, department of the interior, agriculture, commerce. the army corporation of engineers and state and national conservationists. they plan to highlight how state and federal agencies will work together to deal with the worst drought in california's recorded history. some action has been taken. usda has given $20 million to california farmers to help them in business. talk to our rain expert, christina loren. >> as we head throughout the next five days, we'll be chipping away at that drought. but it's a bad scenario. we likely won't get out of it through the season. it's going to rain and it's going to pour. will the old man snore? we'll have to wait to break that

news. temperatures are mostly in the 30s, 46 in san francisco. right at freezing in north bay. in case you don't know, we are your official olympic station. guess what? olympics start tomorrow. we are all over it. make sure you stick with us here on nbc bay area. let's get into your microclimates for wednesday. we'll see significant differences especially between the south bay and the north bay. it's going to take some time for storm systems to ride down the coastline and make it into the south bay. expecting warmest temperatures here as a result. upper 50s headed our way along the peninsula, mid to upper 50s. clouds increasing all day. san francisco, likely to get your first showers by 4:00 p.m., maybe 5:00 p.m. north bay, start showers here earlier at 3:00 p.m. but not before you hit a high of 59 degrees in santa rosa. 59 napa, big rain to the north bay. stick around.

pass, building through livermore. closer toward the dublin interchange. live look at oakland, 880 past the coliseum. northbound, no problems here. southbound with headlights towards san mateo bridge, easy flow of traffic. speeds for the rest of the east bay. by the coliseum for the nimitz, but bottom of the screen, 580 smoothly to the maze. top of the screen, east shore freeway from the limit highway 4, berkeley, berkeley curve as well. smooth flow of traffic across the bay bridge. over in the city, van ness, drove a deadly crash involving a pedestrian. there's an investigation going on there. folks getting into the city for the morning commute. so that's a smooth drive. watch it there, van ness at grove for another half hour, maybe more. we're trying to get the latest update on that one. earlier crash westbound 37 through black point has cleared. folks involved in the crash said there was fog earlier. also fog registering, still over

ed the olympic stadium, two dress rehearsals. they have been closed to the media. we know there will be fireworks. last night, fireworks lit up the skies over sochi. it was a dry run. we heard loud music and saw light display at the two-hour rehearsa rehearsals. on friday, you'll see genuine excitement as they walk in the ceremony. old athletes say that's one of the things they're looking forward to most. a famous russian musician performing but no names yet. no word who will be carrying the olympic flame to the olympic cauldron. one name rumored russian gymnast, a two-time olympic medalist. russian president putin arrived today. aarrived yesterday actually. he's on the ground somewhere today. also at opening ceremony friday.
