4:30 am
here is a welcome sight. heavy rain falling across the bay area. this is just the beginning. more wet weather is headed this way. good morning everyone. it's 4:30. i'm scott mcgrew. >> such a great thing. i'm laura garcia-cannon. our weather advisory is in effect around the bay area this morning. and we have team in place to help you get around this wet mess. christina loren will tell us how long this will last. let's start with christie smith. she is bearing down this morning live out there along the elements on the san mateo
4:31 am
bridge. what's it like out there? >> reporter: good morning to you. i have to tell you, this is the real thing. it's been so long since i've seen it. i had to figure out where all of my rain gear is. i haven't had it on for such a long time. since i got up driving in from the east bay it's raining just like this. you can see there is standing water out here on the ground. we drove across the san mateo bridge. my photographer had to hold the steering wheel tight. it's windy crossing the bridge too. that is causing some problems throughout on the roadways. already this morning starting in san francisco, a bad one, a driver in a porsche drove with the top down this morning, spun out and hit a tree. there were some minor injuries and the car itself, well, it was totaled. if you know cars, those can go up to $100,000.
4:32 am
major front end damage there. we're talking about rain flew the morning commute which in your typical year we might complain about. this year with all of the drought talk it's a welcome sight on the roads, though, the chp has a word of advice. it will be slick. >> you can always determine that by seeing if there's white bubbles on the road. that is a very good indication that the road is going to be extra slippery because the oils have started to rise up from the asphalt. >> reporter: pg&e, they have been busy too, trimming trees. they say that helps when power lines go down. i did get off the phone with a chp a couple minutes ago. how is it going, this is the first significant rain in a long time. they said overall they are seeing people handle it pretty well. the bulk of the commute hasn't started but it's raining pretty stead they morning and for more on what it's looking like i'll turn it over to christina.
4:33 am
what is the radar showing you? >> goodness, it's showing me that the heavy batch of rain is right now headed toward you, so make sure you seek shelter as long as you can until we get back out to you. we have reporters placed all across the bay area this morning. we knew this was coming and right now we're getting hit the hardest, to the south of the golden gate bridge the nature of the showers starting to deteriorate up in the north bay but we're going to get that steady rich moisture slamming the south bay right in time for the morning drive. so you really want to take it easy even though there's not a lot of cars on the highway i had a rough time getting to san jose from campbell this morning so i can tell you right now even if you have a short trip it can be dangerous. we typically don't get these batches of heavy downpours from concord to walnut creek, oakland and look at what's on the way to the peninsula. most of this activity is going to be south of 92 as we head throughout the next couple hours, we're fair game for heavy downpours all the way until about lunch time.
4:34 am
then there is another more potent system even than this on the way as we get into the week. maybe just maybe 6 to 9 feet of powder in tahoe by monday. that's an indication of what we're in store for. let's check on the drive. looks like it's going to be rough. who are is mike. >> it's rough overnight in fact. really 3:00 this morning when i was checking reports we had four separate spin-outs. sounded like facing the wrong way. looking here the bay bridge toll plaza, puddling and the ponding. the water kicks up behind the cars. that's the note for folks, the ponding indicated on the maps, traffic and weather tied together t blue is where you have puddling and ponding. the green it's wet. that's the entire bay area as the approach to the maze and slower drive there at the toll plaza just as you get to the gate because of slick conditions. westbound 580 at north livermore a crash cleared. we had a couple of lanes
4:35 am
blocked. there was a second crash at the off ramp. a look at the san mateo bridge in the same area where christie is. we have a smooth drive over to the peninsula side. 92 you can see the water, watch for the slick conditions especially the transition ramps. here the palo alto side, that big old bunch of rain coming down. right now it's slick as can be. back to you. >> all right, mike. thank you. our coverage of the wet weather will continue all morning long. you can go to our website nbcbayarea.com and get right to our live radar as well. >> we do have breaking news to tell you about in the south bay. police are investigating in central san jose a homicide. officers found a man with at least one stab wound on south market street. he was taken to the hospital where he died. his name will not be released until the coroner notifies his family. >> police have not said what led
4:36 am
up to the stabbing and not arrested anyone. this is the city's fifth homicide this year. >> prosecutors expect the man accused of setting more than a dozen fires in san jose to enter a plea. investigators say patrick brennan set 13 fires between january 8th and 10th which caused $6 million in damage. they include a 5-alarm warehouse fire, six house fires with people inside, nobody hurt. brennan was already considered a serial arsonist, he was convicted of setting 16 fires in the santa clara county foothills in 1999 and setting debris on fire in the grand canyon in 1995. also in court the santa clara county correctional officer arrested on drug warnlgs. juan coreo is accused of allowing conviblthsed criminals in his home in exchange for illegal drugs. during a search of the home he was arrested for being under the influence of drugs.
4:37 am
three others at the home were taken into custody. >> an 18-member task force will meet today to talk about new policies designed to prevent hate crimes. the task force was created after four students were accused of bull egg a black student for weeks at one point putting a bike lock around his neck. in a report released san jose staff act quickly once they learned about the accusations. >> hayward police looking for a hit and run driver who sent a woman to the hospital with injuries. the driver struck the woman while she was walking in a crosswalk around 6:30 last night. that's near interstate 880. the car involved is a black newer model sporty sedan, police say, it may have front end damage. competition under way at the olympic games in sochi. this is a live look at the
4:38 am
mountain cluster where several skiing and snowboarding events are under way. >> we're about to reveal some of the results from the overnight events in the men's and women's slope style which is one of the new events. >> now these are going to be shown tonight on prime time on nbc where you can watch them so if you don't want to know what's going on close your eyes. wait for the music to end. wait. >> i was trying to look away as well. safe to look. this is how we're going to be bringing you the latest results during the winter games, we'll give that you warning so that -- don't spoil anything. >> you have to participate. close your eyes if you don't want to see what's going to happen tochblt >> other events, qualifying for women's moguls starts in about
4:39 am
90 minutes. and figure skating kicks off with the men's short program followed by the pairs short program. and even though the action is happening now you can watch all of the competition right here on nbc bay area, it all starts at 7:30 tonight with "the olympic zone" kicking things off. >> our janelle wang will report live all morning, she's going to take us for a tour around olympic park. >> in the meantime we need a tour around the bay area because the radar shows that rain coming down. >> it is coming down. you know what, it's been pretty consistent. .8 inch already. we've got a lot more rain on the way. we head throughout the next couple days. we want to make sure you give yourself extra time to reach your destination, maybe you're taking the little ones to school. have their rain gear ready. try to dry the bottom of your foot before you get in your vehicle. i can tell you right now we've
4:40 am
got more rain on the way. you can see our radar is lit up, we're going to be tracking these heavier cells throughout the morning hours. you can see right now the bulk of the moisture is for the most part confined to south of 92, that is going to be the case for the most part for the rest of the drive. the general nature of this system, it's definitely digging to the south. the heaviest rainfall is on the way throughout the next two hours. you really want to take it easy. the timing could not be worse when it comes to the morning drive. the good news is our own mike inouye is here to guide us through. good morning. >> good morning. i'm looking down at the screen from time to time. chp is updating their reports, we have the latest. a live look i'm watching the water, north 101 through san jose. volume light, the water making the roadways slick. watch the off ramps. the latest north 101 at peninsula avenue reports at the off ramp a single car blocking
4:41 am
the slow lane. it's tough to see but watch 92 as well. sounds like another crash in the same area. here at the top, that's where there is puddling and ponding. the green overall, plain wet. that's what you're going to see the bay area. we'll call out spots like this too. north 28 approaching bird an incident about road flooding there. the warning especially 87 through downtown, so just because i don't call it out doesn't mean you don't have to be careful. all around the bay look at that. the blue on the peninsula, the system depositing more water as well. oakland, we'll show you past the coliseum. travel northbound you have a lighter flow. the glowing lights, kicking up off of the tires. and through the area as well approaching the bay bridge. puddling around the bay bridge toll plaza. >> our bob redell is checking
4:42 am
out the the problems in the south bay. he'll have a live report.
4:43 am
4:44 am
more on the weather advisory across the bay area. a live look at san jose. heavy rain in the morning forecast. it's a big relief for all of us in the region after the driest
4:45 am
weather on record. bob joins us live on 680 in san jose. what's good for the drought could be bad for commuters. >> reporter: it could. good morning to you, scott. we're southbound, passing berryessa headed to the downtown area. the good thing about the road condition this is morning i traveled from the east bay into the south bay, we have not seen any flooding or anything to speak of. not to say that's not happening, we're not seeing it. 880 or 680. that being said when you have new rainfall, you know the roads, that oil build-up that's been building up on the roads does percolate and make the roads slippery so on that first rainfall after a dry period you do want to be careful out here and remember, you don't want to be tailgating your fellow commuters on the way in, especially considering the fact we haven't had much wet weather so our driving skills in the rain are i wouldn't say lacking
4:46 am
but let's say they probably need freshening up. probably a lot of people forgot how to drive in the rain. you want to be careful throughout especially when the morning commute picks up. we are prior to 5:00 a.m. and there's not much traffic. a little more on the northbound direction as you can see the headlights heading toward us and get a sense of how wet it is. it's not a downpour, it's heavy drizzle is what i would say. we've seen it on and off. as our meteorologist christina loren has been telling us, we expect it to pick up as the commute trails on. keep in mind as you're packing up getting ready to head in to work, you might want to give yourself extra time. there could be other people on the road and it wouldn't be you who might have forgotten how to drive in the rain. add extra time. reporting live southbound 680 passing capital, "today in the bay." >> it's always the other guy. >> we're all above average
4:47 am
drivers. that's right. >> the thing is that we're going to see it come in waves, christina. >> you know what, we're going to see the worst in the south bay specific think next couple hours so we're just getting started. what i can tell you is we're starting to get a little improvement in sonoma county so showers are sagging to the south. what i can tell you is we are going to see a very wet commute, count on it being very slow. there's already heavy accumulation, puddles ponding everywhere. not just in the north bay. all across the board. let me show you what we're focusing in on. the heaviest rain right now is moving through red wood stixt we got hit in san mateo and all of this is going to continue to press to the south throughout the morning. when you're talking about this area of red that's rain rates of about a half inch per half hour. that is a lot of rain. our highways not equipped to receive those. a little storm tracking in the south bay, i want to show you when this batch of red is coming
4:48 am
your way. it will be soon. in the heart of the morning drive. morgan hill, 5:57. count on slick conditions. this will leave a mark that will ripple out. you want to keep in mind it's going to be rough. give yourself plenty of time. be prepared to hurry up anded wait. we'll see showers press inland. temperatures will be chilly. bring that jacket. it's going to be cold about with all day long. show you what we're expecting. still getting the heavy downpours at 7:00 a.m. in the morning drive, we stop it for you at 9:00 a.m. still nice and wet across the bay area. until about 1:00 p.m. you can see the showers breaking apart. this is one of a series of storms on the way to the bay area as we progress throughout next five days. let's talk about what we're expecting in terms of accumulation from the specific one storm. we stop the clock at 2:00 a.m.
4:49 am

4:50 am
in a couple hours figure skating gets under way about 30 miles away in the coastal cluster. >> the coastal is made up of five new venues. and janelle wang gives us a look inside each one from sochi. >> reporter: this is the ice dome for men's ice hockey. capacity, 12,000. it means big in russian. it's the larger of two hockey venues at the cluster, the ice dome is designed to resemble a frozen drop of water, the exterior glass panels become transparent and colorful at night, allowing outsiders to see inside. this is women's ice hockey. capacity, 7,000. the name shiva means hockey puck
