5:00 am
big deal as you make your way back to work. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm scott mcgrew. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. as you're waking up be sure to allow extra time for your drive in to work. this is video from san francisco overnight where the rain has started to form pudles on the roads. we have team coverage of the storm that's rolling into the bay area. christie smyth near the san mateo bridge where the winds are causing drivers to slow down. anthony slaughter on highway 17 where it is slow going over that sum michigan mike inouye in our traffic center keeping an eye out. >> let's start with meteorologist christina loren. where is well, i can see it in the red, that's the heaviest rain. >> yeah. it's hard to miss at this point though you can see the radar at this point lit up like a christmas tree. the only place we're getting clearing skies is over marin county and sonoma county at the coastline. i can tell you right now we're getting into the thick of it here in the south bay. take a look at what is headed
5:01 am
toward 17 as we head throughout the next 15, 20 minutes. we do have a reporter live at the 17 sum michigan meteorologist anthony slaughter is there. you see this deep red, that is very heavy rainfall. it's on the way to san jose by 5:38. 5:34 in santa clara. as you can see this organized line, this is going to drive in gusty winds so we're not just talking heavy rain. we're coupling that with the gusty winds. we could see downed trees as of this morning rock slides, mudslides not out of the question. this is really, really heavy rain headed toward a dangerous area. so you want to take it easy. if you can find another way to work or postpone your travels on 17. at least until about 7:30. you're going to be much safer. throughout the day we're going to see clearing especially after 11:00 a.m. but it will be chilly all day long. right now in the 40s, headed to the 50s. more heavy rainfall, even heavier on the way as we head
5:02 am
through tomorrow into saturday. i'm going to tell you about it coming up. back to you, scott and laura. >> you mentioned 17, that's one of the places expected to get significant rain. santa cruz mountain, rain has a way of turning the area into one of the more dangerous to drive. >> anthony is near the sum michigan have you seen flooding so far? >> reporter: no, we haven't seen major flooding but you know the thing that exists today that is unlike some of our past storms that we haven't seen, is a lot of ponding on the roadways. the ponding is what we're going to focus on because it's coming down very heavy. the wind is blowing and it does make for treacherous conditions. the thing you want to pay attention to, really not your own driving of course we all know we're good drivers especially when it comes to good conditions but it's the other folks, especially when you're driving up against that median, the water that splashes up over
5:03 am
the median is a thing to pay attention to. there's a lot of water on the roads and unlike the past storms it's coming down very heavy and not only that but the wind as well so. you want to make sure you're paying attention not only to yourself t car ahead uf and look ahead by several cars. again, you want to be prepared for what's down the road. expect at least ponding and to see this rain christina has been mentioning. we're just getting started. keep that in mind. awe lou extra time and patience really is key. let's all be virtuous. >> we were calling it puddling. anthony is right, ponding. that's what it is. christie smith live out there on highway 92 near the san mateo bridge. how is it looking there? >> reporter: good morning. normally this time of year you are tired standing out here getting soaked but this year of course is different because of the drought.
5:04 am
this is really a welcome sight out here this morning. it's not raining quite as hard as when we checked in about 30 minutes ago but it has been raining steadily. you can see the results, so water here on the shoulder of the road about ankle deep. you can see we were talking about ponding, that is highway 92 there in the distance by the san mateo bridge. you can see the water kicking up from the back of their tires which lets you know what the conditions are like out here this morning. i wanted to show you a little earlier what happened overnight in these rainy conditions. a porsche spun out and the driver slammed into a tree. the car was totaled and by the way, that driver actually had the top down. it's unclear. the roads very slick, also in san francisco we're seeing standing water at 101 and
5:05 am
interstate 80. two lanes were blocked. crews try to clear those clogged drains. it is wet and the water is puddling, ponding, we saw a couple of drivers take the turn there and were a little bit surprised by how much water is on the side of the road as they turn off. christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. >> feel like telling some of those people to slow down. you never know when you run into something like this. this is a live look outside from the south bay this morning, this is at 280 and bird. look at that, that's a lot more than puddling and ponding. that is rough. you don't want to drive through that. bob is out on the roadways this morning checking all of the hazards that could affect you. we've got crews across the bay area to help you get through your morning commute. >> this, mike s an infamous spot
5:06 am
that 280 as you come around corner, there is another one northbound 17, as you come just into campbell. around a corner, slow down. >> what happens is you come around the corner. they have done some grading, so what we have this is 28 on 30 northbound side. this is ponding. that shows up as blue. look at all of the rain and that will be an issue. caltrans is headed out there. i circled it. on the map tied in, traffic amend weather together. that's the blue section where you have ponding and a chance of what's going on on the freeway. we have reports of a spin-out. it has moved to the shoulder out of lanes. look at all that blue. 237 one of your usual suspects. that could be flooding for 237 around first as well, another candidate. livermore we still have slowing
5:07 am
westbound toward north livermore avenue. an early crash took a while to clear, a second one from the freeway took longer but those have been gone. we still see all of that slowing, that's what you should do, lower the speeds across toward the bay area. when you look at palo alto. there is a slick 101. >> all right. up to the minute forecasts and a look at the road visit our website, nbcbayarea.com, click on the weather tab. >> now to sochi olympic games where competition is under way. action on the slopes and the ice. >> there are three evemts today. janelle wang is live in olympic park in sochi, russia with a look at the highlights. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. day one of competition is officially under way. there are three events today, women's mogul, slope style snow
5:08 am
board and a team figure skating competition. figure skating is one of the most popular events so the olympic committee decided to add another event, team event is making its olympic debut. we begin with the men's and pairs short programs, skating for team usa marissa and her partner, they are two-time u.s. champion who is train out of rhode island. they skated together since 2006. for the men's short it will be jeremy abbott of colorado, he is a four-time national champion and placed ninth in the 2010 vancouver games. >> exciting to have a whole new aspect to this. and i'm excited to be part of team usa, not yus -- or myself, but it's like i am part of team usa. >> reporter: only ten countries have the right to compete in this event based on how they finish in the world events last year. they include canada, russia and
5:09 am
great britain. you can watch it prime time on nbc. so exciting day one of competition. reporting live from the sochi games, janelle wang, nbc bay area news. >> good to see you. >> now for everything you need to know about the winter games including what you'll see tonight and the latest from olympic park, you go to nbcbayarea.com and search for sochi 2014. i have to say this morning early i watched the olympics on line. it was awesome. also watching the weather. >> you don't have to search far to find the rain. >> we've got you covered on both bases. good morning to you, scott and laura, everybody at home. if the rain didn't wake you up, you want to give yourself extra time. if you are just joining us. this is the peninsula and the south bay getting slammed by the heavy rain. you see this deep red, i want to show you how intense that rain is. it's coming in over an inch, 1.3 inches per hour. that is enough to do serious
5:10 am
damage to your morning drive. you can see right now it's the south bay getting slammed the hardest. we're going to see heavy downpours as we continue through the next two hours. that means potentially accumulating up to an inch of rain. north bay starting to clear out. the rest of the day, we will see clearing. not until 11:00 a.m. by 3:00 p.m. you can see residual activity. this is not our only rain. we've got another late tomorrow into saturday. and when you combine the two systems we're going to be measuring totals in inches. let's check on your drive. here is mike. >> that radar you showed with all of that rain over an inch an hour, over 237 where the traffic sensors report a lot of puddling, we'll watch, it's ponding getting so bad. we'll look to the bay bridge toll plaza. on the roadway look at that kicking up behind the cars, it's going to kick over the median
5:11 am
for some in closer proximity to the highway. let's get to the maps and talk about the blue all over the east bay. the ponding can be severe. we'll twhach as the morning develops. more reports, we're watching for hillside slippage. we have that for 128 in the north bay. 101/92 interchange, northbound still have the crash at the interchange on the shoulder as well as peninsula on the shoulder. similar incidents, one car sounds like a spinout. a slower drive throughout the daut. a tad bit slower. back to you. >> we have breaking news out of the south bay where police are investigating a homicide in san jose. a man was stabbed at least once in cesar chavez park. he was taken to the hospital where he died a short time later. his name will not be released until the coroner notifies his family. police have not said what led up
5:12 am
to the stabbing and not arrested any one for the murder. this is the city's fifth homicide this year. >> new security concerns around the olympics, this involves tubes of tooth paste. >> plus we continue to keep an eye on the weather. puddles hike this causing curveball on the roads. we'll sue live team coverage still ahead.
5:13 am
5:14 am
welcome back everyone. 5:14. shelters are rushing to save stray dogs set to be cleared before tomorrow's opening ceremony in sochi. local authorities hire add pest control company to get all of the stray dogs out before the games. so far hundreds have been killed. city officials say the dogs can be wild or dangerous. the civil rights activists have been trying to save the animals. according to "the new york times" the russian billionaire is funding a massive rescue effort where volunteers trap the
5:15 am
dogs and take them to a shelter outside of town. >> a warning for airlines heading into russia. terrorists might be trying to smuggle explosives hidden in tubes of tooth paste. peggy joins us with more. >> good morning. tooth paste bombs, it's the latest security twist for those traveling to the gamesment you might say we are approaching security fatigue about warnings that according to a government source the threat is real and based on very good information. the warning is specifically for airlines flying to russia for the olympics, direct flights so airlines with direct service are the ones warned by the u.s. department of homeland security to examine tubes closely as they could hold parts to assemble a bomb while on the plane. the extra attention on tooth paste tubes is a bit much.
5:16 am
>> i think it's ridiculous really. it wouldn't put me off. nothing security. better than it ever was but i think maybe it's a bit over the top warning. >> still, security officials are taking no chances. this after u.s. intelligence picked up on increasing chatter which led to the warning. over 40,000 police and safety personnel are in sochi. this will have extra time in the security line examining all of that tooth paste and cosmetic tubes. homeland security says a majority of direct flights will arrive from europe or asian countries, only a handful originate from within the u.s. so. something to keep in mind there. >> sochi 12 hours ahead means for many the first day of competition is actually over. >> we are going to show you all of the key events in prime time tonight. if you can't wait we'll show them to you 18 second. turn away and turn back when the music stops if you don't want to know who won.
5:17 am
>> all right. you can look again. there are still three events today. the qualifying round of the women's free style skiing starts in less than an hour. >> and later in the morning the first team competition in figure skating. men's short and pairs short program today. >> let's check in with christina loren who has been very busy. >> goodness. mother nature is really at it. i can tell you we need this rain desperately, all at once not so much. in the heart of the morning drive as well. the hardest downpours in the south bay. make sure you're ready for what
5:18 am
could be a dangerous drive. we've accumulated over an inch of rain up in mill valley. just about there in san francisco. and we're talking about about 3/4 inch in half moon bay and the heavy downpours just started in the south bay. we're going to check on the totals all morning. every drop helps. i want to show you the wide view. this is where the rainfall is coming down. you can see right now it's starting to clear sonoma county. mill valley, you'll be out of the thick of it over the next two hours. not before accumulating potentially. another half inch to inch of rainfall. look at the south bay. just getting slammed at this point. you're dry from san jose to milpitas up to fremont, very dangerous. you want to take it easy. the heavier cells are expected between now and about 7:00 a.m. we'll start to see everything lighten up a touch as we head throughout the second half of your morning drive. i think between about 8 to 10 we'll start to see really a lot
5:19 am
of improvement. look at this, we've got another batch on the way to san jose as we head throughout 6:12, you're getting drenched and there is more on the way. this is not the only system we're tracking. a more potent system on the way as we head throughout tomorrow into saturday. that's the story in my next report. a look at your drive. good morning to mike inouye. it's going to be a rough one out there this morning. >> it is. get a look at this north bay 101 southbound glowing lights because of all of the water on the roadway. it's wet all around. let me show you the travel speeds as you come down. a lot of the build, we're seeing a good amount of company. the green for most of these here including 37 over from vallejo. i'll show you a problem in a second. we have green all over. this green and the blue all over the system, shows you where the ponding likely around the bay. mostly upper east shore freeway. but a couple of crashes around the carquinez bridge could be an
5:20 am
issue. they are on the shoulder. wet roads, slick conditions. the bay bridge not a problem, wet roads coming into the city. san francisco earlier but not now. on the peninsula side a smoother drive. crashes throughout san mateo on the northbound side a couple of spin-outs so we're watching these areas. a slower drive continuing to improve as an earlier crash has cleared out. the south bay all of this hitting 237. watch it here. 280 at bird reports of flooding. our bob redell is out there. bob you have a closure. what's going on? >> reporter: good morning. yes, northbound 280, the off ramp is shut down because of this flooding that extends maybe a good 50 yards. there is a clogged drain on this upper part, you can see looking at my speed it gets to about 4 to 5 inches deep. that's why the chp if you look behind has shut down this section of the roadway because they don't want people coming in
5:21 am
and having issues. right now they are waiting for caltrans to come out to unclog that drain. i can't tell if that silhouette walking toward us is maybe with caltrans or chp. this has been going on about 40 minutes but the good thing is if you could see the headlights heading in our direction, you look to the right there is not much traffic. that's northbound 280. so it's possible that once they get this drain unclogged that all of this water could be going back to where it's supposed to be by the time this commute gets heavy. this is the bird avenue off ramp. this is not huge. we've got a good five, maybe six inches of water covering the roadway. reporting live in san jose. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks, bob. it's 5:21. competition at the winter games already under way. we've got a live look this morning at olympic park. that is where the medal ceremony
5:22 am
will be held. we're going to take you back to sochi coming up for a look at what makes those medals so special.
5:23 am
5:24 am
>> >> the olympic flame has arrived in sochi along with something else. >> those coveted medals. janelle wang is live in russia with the details g. morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, laura and scott. i'm going to talk about the flame first after traveling four months, 40,000 miles the flame has reached sochi. it will be used to late to olympic cauldron friday night t centerpiece of the coast of cluster. today it's moving into the city of sochi, the flame has had the longest journey for an olympics games. it started in moscow and stopped in more than 130 cities and towns across rush yaxt 14,000
5:25 am
torchbearers took part an has been to the north pole t space station and even the deepest lakes. also here, precious medals. the official olympic medals arrived. gold, silver and bronze also 100 made actually by a jewelry company in moscow. the value of the gold medal, about 600 bucks but if it was pure gold, this medal would be worth about $21,000. it is one of the largest gold medals in the history of the games. and there are 98 events so there's a lot of gold to be won. reporting from the sochi games, janelle wang, nbc bay area news. >> those are huge. i guess go big or go home. >> worth every bit of them. now to an exclusive investigative report. allegations of animals left out in extreme heat mishandled even accidently shipped to the wrong country. our unit talked to former pet
5:26 am
handlers who worked in cargo in one of the largest airlines at one of the busiest airports, both wanted their voices and appearance disguised to protect them and their careers. but for years they worked inside this holding facility making sure animals were fed and walked and cleaned. they travel as cargo. they witness what they consider animal cruelty. >> they were sick or conditions inside the crates were really horrible. feces inside. >> a dog that was supposed to go to florida to hong kong. >> how do you send an animal to the wrong country? >> complete carelessness and lack of accountability. >> you'll hear from the federal agency that regulates pet travel. you can watch investigative reporter's full report tonight at 11:00. >> it's 5:26. our top stories coming up including how san jose state university is planning to deal with hate crimes in the future. >> and heavy downpours producing
5:27 am
localized flooding. right now the bull's eye is on the south bay, heavy rain at least for the next hour. travel cautiously. we are tracking this storm system as it develops by the minute. >> we're watching the effects, depositing rain, wet roads around the bay. a lot of spin-outs and
5:28 am
5:29 am
rain now falling heavily all over the bay area. san rafael there's close to an inch of rain. on the san mateo bridge drivers told to watch out for high winds, and in san jose we've had more rain this morning than we had since november. pretty amazing. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. let's get things started with meteorologist christina loren, the woman of the hour. >> my goodness. i am so glad i'm safely at work. maybe that's not the case for you. you want to give yourself ample time especially if you take the little ones to school.
5:30 am
look what is the is on the radar. that subtropical tap coming into san jose. we're getting a little bit of improvement from santa rosa south to marin county, hey, we've got a lot more rain on the way as we head through next few days and the next system again will tap that moisture so the totals will be high. this is right now. as we head throughout day we're going to continue to see showers lighten up. but for the next two to three hours it's going to get worse before it gets better. specifically, along the peninsula and in san jose. i want to take you down and show you what 17 looks like. in addition to the rainfall we're anticipating gusty winds, and we do want to take you out live now, our meteorologist anthony slaughter is live on the summit of 17 and anthony, my goodness, it is coming down hard out there. have you seen people hydropla hydroplaning or losing control because of these high rain rates? >> definitely you can even just a minute ago you probably heard
5:31 am
one of the 18-wheelers honking, flashers on, lots of brake lights from time to time. saying that we were talking about earlier the hydroplaning, the ponding on the roadways really a huge concern because there is so much water coming down so quickly. and that water doesn't have anywhere to go. we're on a summit so the water is traveling downhill. but the shoulder, water traveling there, if you get too close you could hit a puddle. that throws water on other cars. today is about reacting. be ready to react to the worst. really less than perfect conditions out here so you want to prepare yourself mentally before you get on the roadway. just to know that it's going to take more time to get to where you got to go. and with the weekend around the corner we all want to continue to enjoy our lives and get to where we have to go safely. take it easy out there. we'll be here tracking it all
5:32 am
morning. >> hey, good morning. you know what, thanks for being out there, anthony. you are such a trooper, have to tell you heavier rain headed our way the next 15, 20 minutes. make sure you are prepared. over the course of the weekend we are expecting even more rainfall. so you want to keep in mind this is one of a series of storm systems on the way to the bay area. we should be clearing out as we head through the second half of the day a. break tomorrow, then i'll talk about the next round of rain coming up. right now i'm going to send oat ver to mike inouye. >> traffic and weather go together. this live shot is 101, look at all of the water kicking up. i want to take you to another part of san jose, this is our look here, 280 the off ramp at bird where bob has been doing his report. this is ponding almost laking. they closed the off ramp because of all of this standing water. chp is on scene. the department of transportation has to arrive to clear the drain. again, it's the off ramp of 280
5:33 am
at bird. not the most busy right now in the area but this will get busier and we'll have others throughout. we'll show you where this is. the blue all over this map puddling and ponding likely. i circled the bird off ramp. 87 a usual suspect for flooding through downtown. 17 where anthony is talking about as well as trees down, we're watching for reports but none so far, 237 wet at the top of the screen. likely suspect for flooding. the tri-valley has a slower drive out of the altamont. then slow into the system and we're looking at a slower drive through that portion as well as the green, wet roads. now the east shore, going to wend the east shore freeway shot, a live look out here and you see the maze is busy and we'll watch the transition ramps. also on the peninsula we have our own christie smith. you're out there with some wet roadways on the peninsula. no one is immune from this. >> reporter: good morning to you. you know, the rain has been
5:34 am
falling steadily since we got here before 4:00 this morning. got up at 2:30 and it was raining then. it's not raining as hard now as it was maybe an hour ago but again, it is steady and this is a result around the freeway, the exits here, there's maybe two to three inches at least ankle deep of standing water. what happens is that when the cars take this exit off of highway 92 from the san mateo bridge you can see they are surprised to see all of this standing water and their tires so deep in the water. and of course you were talking about this but it's caused problems throughout on the roadways where it's wet and slick and dangerous. and san francisco overnight at 101 and third, a driver in a convertible porsche 911 lost control, and slammed into a tree. there were minor injuries, the car was totaled, as you know sometimes those can go for $100,000. also overnight in san francisco, at 101 and 80 there was quite a
5:35 am
bit of standing water in the number 2 and 3 lanes so cars had to creep along past that. and crews were out trying to clear those drains and make it easier to get by. the issue that we're seeing is that at this point it's not raining as heavily as it was but it's steady. it hasn't stopped so. you take those freeway exits, when you get to certain levels, but you can see there was quite a bit of standing water here, also that's the exit which is covered with water so again, we're talking about it all morning but you want to be careful as you head out. live near the san mateo bridge, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. we are certainly tracking our storm on the website as well. nbcbayarea.com. click on weather up there. you'll find live radar and up to the date traffic information as well. >> prosecutors expect the man accused of setting more than a dozen fires in san jose to enter a plea today.
5:36 am
investigators say patrick brennan set 13 fires between january 8 and 10 which caused $6 million in damage. they include a five-alarm warehouse fire and six houses with people inside. luckily no one was hurt. brennan was considered a serial arsonist, convicted of setting 16 fires in the foothills back in 1999 and setting debris on fire in the grand canyon in 1995. also in court, the santa clara county correctional officer who was arrested on drug charges, juan k during a search of his home he was arrested for being under the influence of drugs. three other people living at the home were also taken into custody. >> this morning hayward police are looking for a hit-and-run driver who sent a woman to the hospital with serious injuries. police say the driver struck the woman while she was crossing in the crosswalk on hesperian
5:37 am
boulevard around 6:30 last night. the car involved is a black newer model sporty sedan, and they say it may have front end damage. >> a task force will meet at san jose state today to talk about the new policies to prevent hate crimes. it was created after four students were charged with a hate crime accused of bullying a black student for weeks at one point allegedly putting a bike lock around his neck. a report released last week found san jose state staff acted quickly once they learned about those accusations. >> let's check in with meteorologist christina loren this morning. she has got her eyes on the radar. it looks ugly. >> it looks really ugly. we want you to be safe this morning so do give yourself ample time to hit the roads. once you get out there travel cautiously. it has been raining steadily. the heaviest downpours are coming through the south bay so take it easy.
5:38 am
you'll notice on seven-day forecast we're talking about four to five consecutive days of rainfall here in the bay area. i'm going to take through saturday because i can tell threw is a subtropical moisture tap involved. we stop the clock from this first round of rain expecting decent totals between 3/4 inch to an inch, here in san jose. then we bring in the next round which starts up tomorrow afternoon continued into saturday. this is mostly going to impact the north bay so we were all going to see significant totals. up in the north bay, close to 4 1/2 inches by swart another round of heavy rain on the way for sunday so. as the days draw on and we continue to get more rainfall, the potential for flooding is heightened. we're all over it. we're staffed up and ready to take on the storms as they come in. you want to make sure you're ready for what could be a rough drive. the man who knows best about that, mike inouye. >> good morning. i know about a tough drive,
5:39 am
upper east shore freeway. at san pablo avenue we have reports of a big rig, jackknifed blocking all lanes. our chopper trying to get throughout as well. we're notifying all folks. we're looking at the peninsula, soupy here as well which is 101 through alto, the peninsula view with the blue, ponding is likely. watch 92. right now a crash clearing from peninsula avenue and another crash, a smoother slower drive across the bridges. especially north 280 at bird the off ramp is closed. slowing for 237 because of flooding and 101 because of the heavier volume of traffic. a quick look at 880 through oakland. you see how wet it is. the water kicking up. >> our coverage of the sochi games continues next.
5:40 am
why organizers had to stop training runs on one of the courses. >> the local athletes starting competition. we're going to take you live to sochi.
5:41 am
5:42 am
welcome back. you're looking at the rosa khutor mountain cluster. home to some of the biggest olympic events including a brand new event snowboard slopestyle. >> first round got under way on the slopes without superstar shaun white. let's go back to janelle wang live in olympic park with a preview of what to expect. good morning. >> good morning. shaun white dropped out of this event at the last minute saying the course was a bit intimidating and he didn't want to risk injury and instead focus on his third straight gold medal in the half-pipe. he was not the front-runner. several california athletes are
5:43 am
the favorites. slopestyle has been popular in extreme support in the x games for a decade now. it's a downhill course with rails and jumps that they perform tricks on. this course proved challenging. several serious crash this is week but the northern california athletes are expected to dominate the sport in competition. including chas g guldemond and we have jamie anderson, the 23-year-old is a 7-time dew tour gold medalist. >> it's definitely a good moment for snowboarding to show it on a global scale. that's exciting. >> reporter: meantime, more controversy with shaun white. while he cited safety concerns a couple rival snowboarders tweeted harsh comments.
5:44 am
a canadian said he withdrew because he's scared and another said quote it's easy to find excuses to pull out of a contest when you think you can't win. so, a lot of smack talking on day one of competition. sure to be exciting. slopestyle will be in prime time making its debut. janelle wang, scott and laura, back to you. >> you can watch some of that slopestyle on line. i was watching it. a norwegian skier who just got knocked out. maybe shaun's got a point. >> a little ways away, finishing touches putting on the women's olympic downhill course. training was halted early this morning after three racers went through the course and complained they were getting too much air on a jump near the finish. one italian skier says she hurt both her knees when she landed. workers are shaving down the jump and runs should resume later. don't want an injury to start

5:46 am
good request six inches. caltrans just pulling up. so you can see chp has it shut down but once they get this unclogged this should be reopened pretty fast. as chp was pointing out to us, what happens you don't have these rains, those drains do get clogged if they don't have anything flowing through them. once he figures out t caltranses driver, where the drain is he will get in there and pop out whatever debris is keeping this clogged. until that happens this is the bird avenue off ramp and northbound 280, this is not a major off ramp so this is not having a tremendous impact especially when you consider it's still early but we would suspect that maybe by 6:00, the next 15 minutes they would have this reopened. speed is at the limit. it's trying to get this water that's settling here. who would have thought after all
5:47 am
of this news we're hearing about the drought we would be in a situation like this with five to six inches of standing water. how long you think it will take to get that unclogged? he can't hear me over the roar of the traffic. i don't blame him. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> probably wants to say grab a shovel and come help me. >> that is a -- thank you, bob. that is a thankless job. there is a way to thank those guys, by slowing down. keep those guys safe. >> right they are going to have a busy morning out there. >> yeah, you know, bob pointed out the reason for all of that backup. it was a clogged storm drain. we all have storm drains around our homes and those storm gutters on our house that you want to make sure those are clear. right now not the best time to get out there but i can tell you right now this is not only rain we have headed our way. on the seven-day forecast here at the bottom of your screen we're talking about five
5:48 am
consecutive days of heavy rain. this is no small scenario. we're tapping into that subtropical moisture and right now it's the south bay getting hit. i want to show you what time looks like. heavy rain from san jose into the eastern foothills. throughout the morning hours we'll see the moisture pump into the south bay. this big line of red, this just moved over 101 so we have treacherous conditions from gilroy all the way up to san jose. you really want to travel cautiously. i want to take you even further south. as you know the pebble beach pro am is taking place. i don't think that will be the case. they are getting heavy rain in the monterey area. and this is going to continue for them at least until about 1:00 p.m. south of the bay area. so, as we head throughout the next couple days more rain on the way. i'm going to dive into who could pick up potentially four to five inches of rain between now and
5:49 am
saturday. stick around for that. right now if you got to get out the front door mike is here to help you out. >> this is a huge backup. as you travel west that's your commute direction, a crash, it's not at san pablo avenue, chp arrives there, and look at that. the same area where the puddling and ponding reported tied in with the weather system. the green is generally wet. the blue is where you can likely hydroplane and flooding. it might be affecting the eastbound lanes as a crew arrives. this is a huge issue for the upper east shore freeway. closer to berkeley ond westbound a little more smoothly. but again, slick conditions around the maze, we'll watch for more spin-outs, so be careful coming off the freeway, watch those connectors as well. looking toward the speeds, the east shore we have slower drive
5:50 am
down the freeway because of that crash. down to 36 miles per hour on average. the bulk of the slowing before clear at the rest of the bay. all that's blue coming up the peninsula, flooding reported in many spots. the one bob was telling you about, north 280, watch for crashes around winchester. a couple before and after that. and the slowing because of the volume north 101 and 87. 87 is a usual suspect into downtown. a smoother drive and a slower drive here. one quick shot of san jose. this is the area that's not flooded but a lot of water on the road as well. back to you. >> thank you much. after nearly 22 years hosting the tonight show jay leno will sign off tonight for the final time. >> let's see how you all feel in 30 years. >> hasn't been quite that long. leno was 42 when he took over for johnny carson.

5:55 am
but not getting off to a good start for the jamaican team. >> the team arrived in russia earlier this week, their gear including their shoes and the runners that go on the bottom of the sled not there. the airline lost the luggage. the jamaicans had been hoping to get to the track, get a couple of runs in. so far no luck. they are hoping their luggage arrives today. >> looks like he is on the phone with the airlines. todd lodwick will be leading the athletes of team usa during tomorrow's opening ceremony. the 37-year-old nordic combined skier was chosen by his team members as the flag bearer for the u.s. he calls it one of the greatest honors ever and exciting way to cap off his career. >> let's check in with christina. she has all kinds of colors. >> it's coming in so fast it's getting difficult to track. we're all over it. good morning to you, scott and

5:57 am
talking about this area with the blue that is soupy around the maze and a crash west 80 now reports three of your four lanes blocked so one lane and the shoulder open past san pablo. that's a big slow down. back to you. >> 5:57. back to sochi for a preview of one of the big new events the team figure skating. janelle wang will have a live report. >> live reports outside. look at this live picture. rain continues to come down all over the bay area. this is 28 and bird where the flooding is really apparent. we're having a lot of problems on the roadway. take it easy. heavy rain in the south bay, high wind advisories as well.
