rockefeller plaza. and good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a thursday morning. i'm savannah guthrie alongside natalie morales, diylan as well. i love that music. >> it's kind of catchy. we've been doing the drum beat for a long time. welcome to the alpine village about 30 miles up in the caucacus mountains. that's not some kind of a movie backdrop. that's the real thing behind us. the mountains along the river, got some nice people milling around here. you mentioned that some of the games have gotten under way. we'll be talking to some of the athletes fresh from their qualifying rounds in just a couple of minutes. and also unfortunately we'll have more on that security alert coming from the u.s. government, ladies. >> well, we look forward to catching up on all of that. the olympics are under way, the figure skating tonight, one of

the favorite events. as you said, that top issue is this terror warning. it's a scary one. >> yes, it really is. i'm joined here by kyra simmons of nbc. he has more on that. >> good morning. we've been watching the slope style all morning. at the same time, there has been a new terror warning, this time relating to airlines. but at the same time after all the concern about sochi, it's now time for the athletes to start worrying about winning. from the mountains to the black sea, the world's winter olympians are getting their skates on. and their skis and snowboards. even now, there are new terror warnings, the u.s. government sent an advisory to airlines, watch out for explosives smuggled on to planes in toothpaste tubes. they say there's no specific threat, they're just being cautious. but it pays not to be careful in

the first event today. slopestyle, shaun white's decision to withdraw was slammed by canadian max parrot, he's scared, he tweeted. he later apologized. jamie anderson is still a team usa gold hopeful and hopes to for a medal in the team figure skating, another olympic sport that debuts later. the moguls are one of the courses getting last-minute modifications but most reports that the conditions are near perfect. terrific. the olympic venues are dotted around the mountain, across the valley. you can see the biathlon course over to the right. the olympic village up here. billie jean king will not be here for the opening ceremony because of her mother's failing health. but american named its flag bearer, the only six-time winter olympian, todd ludwig. tens of thousands of spectators, millions watching around the world.

let the games begin. so the competition has started, matt. in that team figure skating both team usa and russia have a chance of medaling. forget putin versus obama. the real cold war is going to be on the figure skating rink, canada have a chance of a medal, too, by the way. >> second time in three days you've been skiing, kyra. you have to start to work a little bit. >> bob costas as always will host the primetime olympic games. he's in the broadcast center in sochi. the opening ceremony is tomorrow. what's on tap today? >> well, as was just mentioned, some of the early training runs in slopestyle and shaun white having dropped out, because of the jammed wrist. it gives him a better chance to be fully prepared come tuesday when the competition will begin on the half pipe. he's won it twice. he's still a favorite to win it for a third time. this is a very daunting and dangerous course.

a lot of the competitors have said that with regard to the slopestyle course. rather than risk any possibility of injury that would compromise his chances in the stronger event like the half pipe, white has pulled out. alpine skiing as well. even without lindsay vonn, the six medals that the u.s. won in vancouver with the likes bodie miller and julia mancuso and ligety and others is a strong total. it's still a strong team even without lindsey vonn. >> the first time in figure skating we're going to see a team event. break that down for me. you like that concept? >> well, the concept if you think of it and it's a flawed analogy because the decathlon is a single competitor. the decathlon in the single games combines a whole bunch of different events into one for a combined score. here i guess it's a quad-atatlon

of skiing where you take the various displans and put them together for a team score. they'd have a lot of different competitors and the u.s., again, with charlie davis and merrill white, especially would have a good chance there. >> maybe a better comparison to the gymnastics. >> yet again, matt, you are correct and i am incorrect. merrill davis, charlie white. i think that's what i said. >> charlie white, there you go right there. let us talk a moment about opening ceremony. we've had the pleasure of doing that together for the last three or four olympics. i'll put it nicely, you're moving on.the russians have an expression, you're ditching me on that. what's the deal, costas? >> well, i just felt that after apprenticeship of three or four olympics, that you were red. i just felt it was time to pass

now signed a disaster emergency proclamation. nbc's rehema ellis is in maple glenn, north of philly this morning. good morning to you. >> what makes this storm different is what you see behind me. trees down on power lines, at one point nearly a million homes and businesses without power now the race is on to restore the power before the next storm hits this weekend. >> reporter: on windshields. >> oh, my gosh, it's hanging by the wires. >> reporter: and on tree limbs and power lines. too much to bear. >> it's the weight of the ice on the wires, the weight of the ice on the trees. tends to bring those down. >> reporter: fallen branches, poking gaping holes in the power grid. pennsylvania was hardest hit with more than 720,000 customers without power at one point. >> i've been living here about 12, 13 years. never seen this much trees fall in this one block. >> reporter: and then there's the snow. a steady stream of snowplows in

all shapes and sizes, hit the pavements from michigan to massachusetts. most other drivers advised to stay off the roads. with good reason. the man in this car was lucky to walk away. >> i tried to stop but nothing you could do. >> reporter: the harsh winter becoming a burden on state and municipal budgets. new york city has spent more than $57 million on snow removal so far this winter. on pace to top last season. still navigating the calf deep puddles has become a sport for new yorkers, though some needed a little help. and mass transit was a mess. with delays causing jam packed subway platforms. in ohio, desperate times. at least one town has run out of salt for the roads. a growing problem for lots of communities big and small. two ships carrying 50,000 tons of salt arrived in wisconsin to help restock.

more than 3,500 crews from as far away as arkansas are joining the local effort. they're making some progress at getting the power on but it's a tough job. savannah? >> what a mess, rehema ellis, thank you so much. natalie is here. you have an alarming report about the u.s. power grid, the safety of it. >> that's right. there are concerns this morning that power plants in the u.s. could be vulnerable to terror attacks. this comes after authorities in california concluded that damage to a substation last april was caused by a sniper. surveillance video shows bullets hitting the equipment in south san jose. in an effort to make transformers overheat and shut down, knocking out the substation. a former executive at pacific gas and electric calls it a potential dress rehearsal for a major terror attack. the fbi is now investigating but it says it does not believe the incident was linked to terrorists. the united nations has published a scathing report on the vatican's handling of sexual abuse within the catholic church.

the u.n. demanded that the vatican immediately remove all clergy known or suspected to be child abusers and turn them over to authorities. the watchdog for children's rights also said the church should hand over its archives on sexual abuse of tens of thousands of children. the texas teen convicted in a fatal drunk driving crash will not get any jail time. ethan couch used affluenza as his defense. a defense expert testified that couch's wealthy parents coddled him into a sense of irresponsibility. wednesday, a judge decided not to send couch to jail but it did order him to rehab facility, paid for by his parents. runs away from the facility or violates any other terms of his probation. well, take a look at this dramatic rescue off the coast of france wednesday night. a ship slammed into a sea wall and it broke in half. the spanish ship suffered engine problems and it began to drift and eventually it slammed into a

sea wall in heavy seas. two helicopters lifted a dozen crew members to safety. no one was injured but they were taken to the hospital to be checked. french shorts say the vessel is leaking fuel. and sadly it's a bitterswe day here at nbc. nearly 22 years after he began his run as "tonight show" host, jaly leno will take his final bw tonight. he took over from johnnie carson in may of 1992 and briefly left the show five years ago. his guest tonight will be billy crystal, jay's first guest in 1992. they come full circumstancele is. "the tonight show" will return from new york on february 17th with new host jimmy fallon. we're excited to see him take over as well. here's an image you won't soon forget. some students at an all-women's college in massachusetts are gathering signatures in an effort to have a controversial piece of art removed from campus. this is called sleepwalker.

some wellsly college students say it's inappropriate, it triggers fears of sexual assault. the statue is part of an art exhibit at the college's museum. the school's president is defending the piece saying it has started an empassioned conversation. you wouldn't want to run into that guy in the middle of the night. certainly understand the concern. >> it looks so real. >> it's so life-like. >> who are we to judge. >> it's creepy. >> my husband's a sleepwalker and it's terrifying. that's in my own house. >> hopefully he doesn't look like that. not in his tighty whities. >> that aren't that tight. >> two storms down, one to go. >> yes, one to go. the third one doesn't look all that bad. just an inch or two, mostly in new england. take a look at the storm, this hit britain and do you see this space, this 30-foot wave creating the spray. this is the new face of weather with these storms battering britain. i think it is unbelievable. the nose, mouth and everything to go along with it 3 britain will get pounded with more bad

weather with violent storms and those rough surf conditions, too. locally we are talking about bitter cold temperatures. we have wind chill warnings and advisories from the dakotas all the way down into ft. worth, texas where temperatures will be extremely cold. we've got this huge dip in the jet stream. this is bringing some relatively colder air, as far south as texas and even into the northeast. although it's been seasonable for this winter, it seems. this cold air is exceptionally cold for parts of even the northwest where seattle feels like 10 degrees this morning. idaho falls, feels like 28 below. 36 below is your feels like temperature in casper, wyoming, moving eastward. minneapolis, the actual air temperature is 9 below right now. at least there's not too much wind. st. louis feels like 10 degrees and it is going to be about 15 to almost 40 degrees below normal in parts of the west and into the rockies. that's a look at the weather across the country. your local forecast is coming up in just 30 seconds.

that is your latest weather. the lights of broadway were dimmed to honor the oscar winner. this as three people arrested in the investigation appeared in a new york city courtroom. let's get the latest from nbc's katy tur. good morning. >> they were indicted late last night as part of the drug bust in connection to philip seymour hoffman's death. one for intent and the other two for possession. all three were sent back to jail for as much as another week. now their lawyers are arguing their being scapegoated for hoffman's death. 3 c3 noche, y ahora esperan que la >> somewhat of a shock situation. >> she's stunned and shocked. >> all three were arrested

tuesday night in the lower manhattan apartment building during a drug raid in connection to philip seymour hoffman's death. they were charged with misdemeanor cocaine possession while vineburg was charged with felony possession of heroin with intent to sell. all three pleated not guilty. police sources say they found nearly 300 envelopes of heroin in three apartments. 250 in vineburg's home alone. the musician's lawyer asked the court not to use his client as a scapegoat for hoffman's death. according to sources, none of the heroin found in the raid had the same stamp or dealer logo as the drugs found in tip lip seymour hoffman's apartment. however, sources close to the investigation tell nbc news that at least one of the phones found had hoffman's phone number. the news comes as broadway dimmed its lights to honor one of its own. later in the evening, hundreds

totals in addition to tracking this potent storm system. you can slice the bay area in half. you see we're starting to let up in the north bay. the heavier moisture is going to continue to stream on shore for the next couple hours. right to futurecast. what we expect the rest of the day. stop it at 8:00 a.m., getting that heavy to moderate rain in the south bay. by 3:00 p.m. we're going to get a break. there is more rain on the way. your seven-day forecast shows you five consecutive days of heavy rainfall in our forecast, you want to make sure you clean out those storm drains where you live. let's look at your drive. it's a rough one so far. >> very rough. the east shore freeway, a lot of traffic through berkeley getting more busy. look at this video we have from our chopper. a big rig caused this problem early this morning. that's still on the center divide. we now have two of your westbound lanes closed. the rest are open and two of the east bound lanes slow as well.

building. i think that's how they pronounce it. i'm not sure. i'm sorry about my accent. the best athletes have gathered here in sochi for the winter games. a lot of attention is being paid to another top athlete. david beckham has decided to exercise his option to start a major league soccer team in miami. i asked him how he thinks the transition will go from the pitch to the owner's box. >> it's something i'm really looking forward to. it's a big challenge. i played in l.a. for six years and i always said that when i came to the u.s., i would always be committed to the mls and growing the sport in this country. this is the first step for that. >> you are now buying the right to stand a brand new mls team. that franchise will be down

there in miami. where will they play? what will you call them? what are the prospects? >> in a couple of years, two to three years we'll hopefully have the stadium built. we're still trying to security the site we want, the land we want. until we do that, i'm working very closely with the mayor and commissioners in miami. once we have the land, once we start the build of the stadium, that's when we'll announce different things like the name and the future of what we want to build here. >> i was reading an article, david, and it said when you decided to go and play for l.a. those years ago, that part of the deal that mls offered you to sweeten the deal was this opportunity to buy in and get a franchise from the league. was that part of the deal? >> it was a very important part of the deal. i wanted to prove my commitment to the league and to the game. everyone knows how passionate i am for the game, i played 22

right now. as that olympic competition is getting underway now in sochi, the u.s. government has issued a new terror warning. officials are urging airports and airlines flying to russia to be on alert for anyone trying to smuggle ingredients for explosives in tubes of toothpaste or cosmetics. they say there is no specific threat and that they are just being cautious. utility crews are working to restore power to more than half a million homes and businesses still without power this morning following wednesday's second winter storm of the week. most of the blackouts are in pennsylvania where freezing rain and falling tree limbs brought down power lines. snow plows are still clearing streets from michigan into massachusetts, and some states are reporting shortages of road salt with another storm now on the way this weekend. three suspects arrested during the philip seymour hoffman death investigation were ordered held without bail after a court appearance on wednesday. a police official says phone records linked hoffman to one of those who was arrested in a

>> i know you've been taking some time to show our own mary carillo around your town of sochi. what are your go-to spots, maria? >> i spent about five, six years of my childhood here. a lot was the city center where i started my tennis career. i took her to the park where i hit my first tennis ball. we went to the seaport, gave her a taste of the cuisine here and went to the circus where i went as a little girl. it's been nice to share that with her. >> you mentioned a park. i was in rivera park and there is a tennis court there and a huge picture of you is there on one of the walls. is that where you got your start? >> that picture wasn't there when i started. but it is where i hit my first ball. there i played leisurely.

i'm 22 and i have a while until retirement. >> 20% of your gross pay is a good place to start. start by putting that into your workplace plan up to the company's matching contribution to get those free dollars and then put that money into a roth i.r.a. you'll be able to take it out tax free at retirement. >> 20% is a lot if you're struggling to pay rent and that sort of thing. >> it is but you need a goal, certainly to drive for. so you look at that number and think how can i get to that number? start small and try to work your way to that goal. >> jen, what do we have? >> bad boy says at what point do you recommend people getting out of the stock market and get into cash? >> a lot of people have that question. >> with what's happened this year, they're thinking they might want to do that. cnbc did a survey of financial

a child in a letter. they wand to see her picture, talk about her. for that reason and also because my life looked like hers had and that was really for the first time, she was constantly on my mind and was totally relying on all of her old tricks and her all standby lines that were rotating through my head like they do. >> one thing that was so interesting about the book is suddenly through that experience, you saw some of the things that had happened through this new perspective. there was something you write about in the book where you had a shoplifting experience when you were a young teen-ager. >> i think my kids are watching this. >> that was in the book. >> your mom did something pretty remarkable in the moment. >> she did. i got caught shoplifting at sears instead of going to field hockey practice. she she said, i don't think i can

okay. big story here. you know, we had, we were talking about the biggest loser yesterday, rachel fredericksson. incredible transformation. she went from 260 pounds to 105 pounds. i mean, look at her. it's unbelievable. >> yeah, she won the grand prize, $250,000. she was on yesterday and talked about how it's a whole life change for her. it's an opportunity to start over again. but a lot of people -- i mean, that's what caught a lot of people by surprise. and, of course, the weight loss. you saw bob harper and jillian michaels, the looks on their face. they were shocked. >> they couldn't believe it. >> they couldn't believe the amount of weight she lost. they lose that over time. but seven months to lose 155 pounds. a lot of people on the twitter-verse and on social media were commenting that maybe

it went too far. >> got worried about her health. >> and you know what -- >> i heard dr. oz say this, or read it, it's hard. they go home and don't have the support system they had on the ranch or with the trainers. and to keep off that much weight, it's hard. >> i think a lot of people are also concerned. did she go too far and become addicted to perhaps the weight loss part of it? because that happens. you can understand when people lose weight, and it's the issue of if you have control over your life. and you can get addicted to that feel. jillian and bob commented on their facebook page. they released the same statement, we're to the comfortable commenting on her journey because we weren't her trainers and didn't work with her at any point. the trainer did talk, but i think right after the show, and he said basically, he tried not to look at one slice of the journey and come to a broad conclusion.

gary has been my friend for ten years. i don't see him very often because this man is out to literally save the world. just briefly, new book out called "the locust effect," probably the most important book for 2014, if we're ever going to get serious about alleviating poverty worldwide. he works for our state department. he was sent as our representative to rwanda after the horrible genocide to make sense, make some sort of sense out of the horrific genocide that happened there. he came to certain conclusions about that, small, short story, he got out of that business, he left the state department, started something called international justice mission, with one lawyer. it now has over 700 employees and 20 different places around the world. they get 5-year-old little cambodian girls out of brothels. they save african ladies, the land that has been stolen from them when their husband dies of aids. what they have done, which is

about cardiomyopathy. >> lisa and her husband eddie suffered unspeakable loss. first, here's their story. >> as newlyweds, my husband eddie and i were overjoyed when we found out we were expecting our first child. our son brian seemed healthy at first but was harboring a deadly heart disease. pediatric cardiomyopathy is a chronic disease where the heart muscle becomes abnormally enlarged, thickened or stiffened, affecting the heart's ability to pump blood through the body. sadly we lost brian in 1999 to sudden cardiac arrest when he was only 11 months old. in 2000, we were happy to have another child kevin, but learned shortly after birth he also had early onset cardiomyopathy. in our efforts to save him from the same fate as his brother, we met with many brilliant doctors, but soon realized there was

limited information on cardiomyopathy in children. we lost kevin at 9 months as he waited for a heart transplant. after losing two children to this disease, we knew we had to help other families find answers and hope for the future. we established the children's cardiomyopathy foundation in 2002 to address the void in research, education, awareness and advocacy. fortunately, eddie and i were blessed to have more children. we now have four heart healthy children, ranging in ages from 13 to 5 years old. the children's cardiomyopathy foundation is an integral part of our life, with our two oldest now becoming more active with the foundation. i'm proud of them for their efforts in supporting the foundation's mission in honor of their two brothers. >> and lisa and eddie, you are here with your beautiful children, michelle, audrey, lauren and brandon. >> such a gorgeous family, by the way. wow.
