first the forecast. >> good morning. light showers on the radar now, the heavier rain moves in later. we'll time it out for where you live coming up. as you know, we had a lot of wet weather yesterday. let's see how the roads are doing. >> they are drying out. the freeways are damp right now but the off ramps, here is a look at 101 north of 680. it's again damp but not wet. we'll look at the maps. first we'll show you the close-up of the roadway. now the maps where you see the speed sensors. maybe we don't have that. that's okay. we'll head to north fair oaks off 101. the crash was cleared but a car went off into the bushes. they are slick. mine was slippery on the way in. >> a live look at olympic park in sochi where actually it's 4:30 in the afternoon. and that means the highly

anticipated opening ceremony set to get under way in 3 1/2 hours. >> so the olympic athletes, they get the day off to take part in all of this pageantry and the thrill of walking into fisht stadium. >> it's what many dreamed of their entire lives. janelle wang joins us with a sneak peek. good morning. >> reporter: good afternoon, scott and laura. yes, the countdown is on, 3 1/2 hours till the opening ceremony. very exciting here. a lot of things taking place. we learned new details russian pop band tatu will perform and a famous opera singer will thing the olympic anthem. 230 athletes from team usa will be there. it's takes place at fisht stadium which seats 40,000 people. the olympic flame is still moving through sochi at this

hour. today an american held the torch. this is video of her, hockey star from chicago. she won four olympic medals including a gold medal in the games back in 1998 with the women's u.s. hockey team. the olympic flame will soon come here and be used to light up the olympic cauldron in the background. if you remember a couple days ago we heard reports that a russian gymnast was going to light the cauldron. today reports that the russian gymnast is russian president vladamir putin's girlfriend,  that's not confirmed but that is what we're hearing. we'll soon find out in about 3 1/2 hours. back to you. >> you know, that makes sense to me. >> thanks a lot, janelle. we're going to check back in a bit. >> and of course you can watch the opening ceremony right here on nbc bay area, including the lighting of the olympic

cauldron. it starts at 7:30 tonight. >> 4:33, people flying from the u.s. to russia you have to check a bag. the tsa banned all liquids, aerosol, gels and powders in carry on bags to russia, after warnings of a new threat involving terrorist smuggling bomb making materials on planes. officials say there is no specific threat but there have been increased chatter talking about targeting planes. >> many people speculating the new google doodle is an illustration against russia's anti-gay laws. it shows athletes with a rainbow colored backdrop. the company unveiled it last night. other than to say the doodle speaks for itself. coming up in about with 15 minutes we'll go live back to sochi. janelle will have a recap of the events and something you can see, a fall that could cost the u.s. a chance to medal.

>> police are looking for a man who got away after robbing a wells fargo in fremont. look at these pictures. this man in his 20s or 30s handed an employee a note demanding money. the employee complied and the man took off. it happened yesterday afternoon at the wells fargo branch close to city hall. witnesses told police the man is between 5'10" and 6'1" with a thin build. >> the former teacher accused of sending explicit pictures to a boy will make his first appearance in court. police say harland edelman thought he meat 17-year-old boy on social media, sent him inappropriate pictures and planned to meet up with him in a park. the 17-year-old was really an undercover detective. edelman worked at the school district from '95 to 2013, recently at the academy of arts and sciences in diamond heights. >> new details on a woman killed

by hayward police officer on tuesday. officials say she was holding a replica handgun when she was shot. investigators say 62-year-old ariel was upset her son had been arrested by pleasanton police. she called the department and they asked police to check on her. when they did, they say she pulled out what they thought was a real gun and threatened them with it. one of the officers opened fire. following the shooting investigators realized the gun was fake. they also say they found a handwritten note indicating she wanted to end her life. >> we have new information this morning on the search for a morgan hill teen sierra lamar. authorities searched the bottom of a south bay lake yesterday. we're not going to say which lake for the integrity of the search. divers are using powerful sonar that allows them to better locate a body. officials said it was for training but sources say divers were looking for evidence.

lamar disappeared two years ago on the way to school. though authorities have not found her body anton is held in jail accused of her murder. >> san jose state students may have to go through diversity training, one of the possible recommendations of a task force. it met last night in response to four students charged with a hate crime accused of bullying a black student for weeks. the group will look at what rules, policies and procedures need to be changed or new ones created. students who attended say while they are glad the task force is working to make changes, they think san jose state has a way to go. >> san jose and the bay area diverse population but i think as far as having knowledge about the different cultures is very different from just having statistics. yes, we're diverse but you know, with our knowledge about the different cultures i think that could be worked on. >> the task force includes students, faculty and alumni. recommendations are due by the

end of april. 4:37. let's turn to our microclimate forecast. yesterday's heavy rains caused all kinds of problems, ponding and flooding on roadways. but that was just the beginning. we're drying out a little but a stronger storm is quickly moving in. >> let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. coming up in a bit. >> yes. but the san francisco public utilities commission not letting the precious rain water wash away. it's collecting it. the new building has a rain water collection system, drains on the roof send water to a storage tank. >> we catch the rain water from the roof and then we move it down to our 25,000 gallon sis tern and we use it for plantings around the building. >> there are 13 buildings incorporating water collection systems. >> let's get to the forecast now. meteorologist christina loren. am i anxious or what. >> you know what, i am as well. i want to thank you for

reminding everybody that is go red for women day. an important day. ladies, let's see that red. and guys we want to see it on you too. right now we have light showers rolling through. the heavier stuff is about six hours away from the north bay and once we get into this big wet pattern we're talking about it lasting all weekend long. so wait till i show you. as we head throughout the morning hours it was wet yesterday, we have more rain later on today. so as we head throughout the next couple hours counting on light showers, then the activity ramps up into this afternoon so. temperatures right now mostly in the 50s, it's going to be a cold day. grab your jacket and umbrella because everywhere we expect the widespread rain showers. today is not the big day. tomorrow will be. then as we head through sunday even more rain on the way to the bay area. you can see the steady stream of moisture coming our way. we're talking about potential for 4 to 7 inches on the valley floor in the north bay. we're going to talk about how

much rain we expect in your city. your seven-day forecast always scrolling at the bottom of your screen. i'm going to show you what's on the way to tahoe. right now let's check your drive. >> we're looking toward 880 t nimitz freeway north of the coliseum. a smooth drive. the off ramps in most of the bay area wet though the roadways are damp as far as the freeway flow goes. a smooth drive, glowing lights, we'll see the speed sensors not presenting a problem northbound. southbound after the coliseum slowing. there is a construction crew that should be cleared shortly. on 580 eastbound away from the bridge, past mcarthur we have a disabled vehicle reported. it's on the shoulder. the traffic flow is still light through the area. here is the tri-valley, a smooth drive westbound through livermore. eastbound up until about two minutes ago see slowing, there was a crew there but they are gone, north of there you see the green and blue.

a very good friday morning to you. a live look outside, you see the bay bridge there in the distance. kind of a cloudy start, all the rain we had in the bay area. getting a break from it this morning, but mor on the way. we're going to check in with christina. 4:44. president obama will sign the farm bill into law today. the bill expands federal crop insurance and ends direct government payments to farmers but the bulk of the bill's $1 trillion price tag is for the food stamp program which helps one in seven americans. the bill is a long time coming. a dispute over the food stamp program held up the legislation for two years. >> happening today lawmakers will outline a proposal to help deal with smart phone thefts in california. many call it an epidemic. senator mark leno and the

district attorney will join leaders to talk about a bill that would require all smart phones to come with kill switches. the switch could be activated remotely and make phones inoperable if stolen. they hope the bill will deter thieves. >> today is the last day google employees can catch a ferry to work for now. two programs to get employees to work by sea expire today. the ferries took employees from san francisco into ala me do to redwood city, then a shuttle into google in mountain view. now google officials have to meet to decide if the ferries should become a permanent system. google has been looking for new ways to get employees who live in san francisco to its campus. unemployment numbers for january will be released in about 45 minutes. many experts speculate a bounce back from december's terrible gain of 74,000 jobs. for the rest of the news, kayla

is live at cnbc headquarters. good morning. >> good morning. futures are higher. invest terse reacting to better than expected data on new filings for unemployment. the big focus today will be the january jobs report. hiring expected to rebound from the december which experts now chalk up to the impact of all of the nasty winter weather. that continued into january but still forecasts call for companies to have added 189,000 jobs and for unemployment to drop to 6.6%. the dow jumping 188, the first time the dow closed up more than 1% this year. again set for higher gas prices. refineries shut down for winter maintenance, and switch over to more expensive summer blends. aaa expects 3.55 and 3.75 a

there is heavy rain on the way as of 11:30 and of course we have an 11:00 a.m. newscast. we'll have a little bit better data as to what's to come so stick with us. as we stop the clock friday at 6:00 p.m. look at. this you make your way home we're talking about heavy downpours, that will continue just about throughout the entire evening commute. then through the overnight hours you can see it keeps coming in. stop that clock at 4:30 a.m. and we're still talking about moderate to heavy rainfall hitting the north bay so. this has the potential to create 4 to 7 inches of rain. as you know, all of that rain so fast could cause flooding. we're going to talk about some of the areas we're watching. but hey, a lot of rain in the bay area means a lot of snow on the way to tahoe. we could measure the snow six feet, maybe seven feet before monday. we're going to keep you updated. it's looking to be very active. back to you. >> thanks so much.

well, from the snow in tahoe to the snow in sochi. thousands of olympians are going to take a short break actually from competition and training today to take part in the opening ceremony. >> as for the start of the games, things did not go so well for the u.s. in the figure skating team event in the men's short program jeremy abbott crashed hard on his opening quadruple jump. >> i'm so proud to be on this team and to be part of this inaugural event and i love every single person on my team. they are like family so i feel torn apart that i let them down. >> team usa is in seventh place right now. will need a strong showing from ashley wagner tomorrow to revive the team's hope for a medal. >> plus slopestyle qualifiers, a great day for northern california. jamie anderson finished second and karly schorr finished

it is 4:53. looking at a live picture of san jose. >> it's friday morning. >> i'm no meteorologist. we've got a good one on staff here but that looks like rain coming in. apparently there is going to be a ton of rain. jay leno said good night last night for the last time as host of "the tonight show." the finale packed full of emotion, surprises and of course good humor. >> a lot of jokes about me over the years. do not worry. i'm not upset. on a totally unrelated note i decided to make you my new ambassador to antarctica. i hope you have a warm coat, funny man. >> in addition, leno was sar anated by billy crystal and kim ckardashia kardashian. >> i'm so glad i got to be a part of it but it really is time

though there is not active rain. we look at the rain. a smooth drive for 101 out november va too into san rafael. some fog on the sensors. the orange is, calistoga, watch that area for fog and mist on the roads. damp roadway, wet roadways in some cases for the connector ramps. here a smooth drive, no problems off of the golden gate field area to the bay bridge where it's a smooth drive. dublin, 580 and here is a good volume of traffic. no slowing out of the altamont pass. a note if you head to the sierra, christina talked about the snow that continues to fall. i got the update. interstate 80 and 50 both have chain requirements so if you head toward the ski you got to get through the snow first. >> over the river and through the woods. >> four minutes to the hour. our coverage from sochi continues.
