awaiting the opening ceremonies. >> while the kickoff to the winter games is tonight competition is under way and team usa dominated on the slopes but failed on the ice. >> janelle wang live at olympic park with more. good morning. >> reporter: good afternoon, laura and scott. it is 5:00 in the afternoon here, opening ceremonies set to begin in just a few hours. you can see the park not very busy but it will get busy soon. the athletes are so excited about opening ceremony. but as for the competition, it got off to a rocky start. did it not go well for team usa in the new figure skating team event. the pairs team struggled. in the men's short program jeremy abbott crashed hard. after last night team usa is in seventh place in this team event. they still have a chance to medal if ashley wagner pulls off a stellar performance on saturday.

but in the other new event that debuted, team usa rocked it. snowboard slopestyle. jamie anderson and karly schorr did so well they can skip the semifinals and go directly in the finals on sunday. for the men, no u.s. rider advanced directly to the finals but tahoe's chas guldemond will compete on saturday. more athletes are arriving in sochi. the half-pipe free skiers arrived in time for the opening ceremony and we caught up with them. their event is new to the winter games, basically what snowboarder shaun white does but on skis. three members are from northern california and those three are stellar on the half-pipe. the entire team took the time to meet with me today one on one. they can't wait to compete in their first olympic games. >> honestly i came in with as few expectations as i could f. you have a ton of expectations you are bound to be disappointed

or put off guard. i'm here to enjoy the experience and it's been pretty amazing so far. >> the opening ceremonies are tonight. i've been waiting for that all mot. i'm really excited. yeah, i think it will be a great way to kick off the games. >> reporter: britta's friend and competitor, mattie powman is here and getting her hair done as we speak. they are also roommates here in sochi. david weis and world champion is the favorite to medal. so a lot going on. they don't practice until next week and their event doesn't start until the 18th but they are here soaking it all in. a lot street begin kicking off with the opening ceremonies tonight. >> it looks like the pictures you're soaking it in as well. >> reporter: yes, i'm kind after fan of theirs. >> great. it's kind of cool to see our

valley floor. i'm talking about san jose. we picked up an inch yesterday. half moon bay over an inch for you and the winner up at guerneville. as we head throughout the next couple days we have heavier rainfall on the way. we're not going to have that long of a drying out period. we're getting light showers throughout. remember, seven-day forecast is there at the bottom of your screen. that can let you know right there, that tells the story. showers at least for the next four days with saturday the heaviest day. that's tomorrow. right now, though, tracking light showers across the bay area. that activity will ramp up throughout day and i want to give you an indication of what's coming. we started this alley over. this is fresh to the bay area. potential for about 1.5 inches of rain in monterey but for us in the san jose area we could accumulate 2, 2 1/2 inches, talking about potential for five inches over north bay over 72

hours so. we're talking about flood danger. i want to bring in bob redell. bob, how are residents there gearing up for this record rainfall? >> i think they are like all of us, happy to see the rain, of course with another soaker on the way it's possible that we could see some ponding. if you live in a low lying area, that has poor drainage, you might want to check with your water you tilt see if they provide sandbags like the santa clara dikt which does this at this location. the district maintains this site year-round. it's hard to tell if this is a normal stash or they boosted the number in anticipation of the storm expected this weekend. yesterday a storm dumped about an inch of rain on the area. the drought the state has been struggling with, was not enough, this weekend's storm, won't be

eenough to get us out of this drought. it could take several series of storms to significant lay improve our water. right now the bay area received about 20% of the normal amount of rainfall for this time of year. after this weekend we could be at 30 percentage, improvement but nowhere near we need to be. even though you see all of this rain and awe get several inches, not even half is going to run off pause that ground is so dry. it sucks it up. it's going to take a out of rain to get ground saturated. >> you know bob, that is such great information. if the you are headed out and about today, count on the rain coming in after lunch time and once it starts it is going to go on and on. we'll keep you updated. mike inouye joins us. the roads haven't had a long

time to dry out. >> no. my concern is the roadways, they cleared most of those. this might soupt like conflicting, all of that rain quickly it has to reduce the water store but coming down quickly we may have a championship for rug sides or rocks. right now we're looking at the east shore freeway which sounds smooth. yesterday late in the morning as the rain eased up we had fog and clouds. now we can make that out. a smooth drive down off the carquinez bridge toward this area for interstate 80. enough of interstate 80 where there is a report around. i saw slowing until about 10 minutes ago. clear for the last 10, that's good out of sirk lease for goks getting off the benicia bridge.

accomplice bragged in a rap video hosted to youtube. brassa was shot and killed working the counter of a 7-11. police say jerry a ka kneel and warner travis shot and killed risa and took off with cash. the gold necklace and cigarettes. >> 5:12. police are looking for a man they say forced his way into a home and grabbed a baby. it happened last night at about 8:00. police say a woman and a man with a knife and bandanna pushed their way into the victim's home and demanded money. been the victim said she didn't have any the man picked up the baby and demanded money again. she recognized him as an acquaintance from san jose. the suspect ran out of the house with the victim's cell phone. the baby was not hurt. >> it is 5:12. in a move that could change the

we are just a few hours from the start of the opening ceremony in sochi. that's a live look at fisht stadium this morning. things starting to get crowded down there as spectators actually expected to file into the stadium where the opening ceremony will be held in a few hours for them. ceremony really a highlight for many athletes, so it's unfortunate that four of our local ones won't be there. the sharks play at home tonight against the columbus blue jackets which means they won't make that ceremony. they have work to do at home.

about 150 nhl players in all are headed to sochi playing for their respective countries. the league has chartered direct flights to get all of the players to sochi safely. three charters set to leave newark on sunday. one set to leave atlanta, play starts on wednesday. sharks forward joe pavelski won't just miss the opening ceremony but his own day in his town of plover, wisconsin. he says he still has a lot of family in the area who will be. >> in an unprecedented move facebook decided to give a grieving dad access to his late son's facebook page. john berlin posted a video, a plea to facebook to allow him to create a look back video featuring his 21-year-old son who recently died.

these are the new videos that highlight your history on facebook. facebook normally disables the account of people who died but gave berlin access. as a result of berlin's story facebook is considering changing its policy when it comes to users who died. the san francisco stock dropped 24% thursday, now over $50 a share. investors abandoned the stock after the quarterly report showed the number of new users is slowing much more quickly than expected. and we're keeping an eye out for the january jobs numbers. economists expect about 170,000 jobs added. the numbers come in about 15 minutes. we'll bring them to you when they do. >> right now a look at the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. a little calm before another storm? >> yeah. we're talking about heavy rainfall, scott and laura, that's going to stick with us.

so i'm going to tell you you want to make indoor plans for this weekend. you'll notice on the seven-day forecast we're in the thick of it for four days. here's what we're working with. light showers, mostly moving through the south bay and the east bay. this is it until about 10:00 a.m. and the heavier rainfall starts to push in. we're mostly in the 50s, as we head throughout this afternoon, sticking with the 50s, 56 in san francisco, 57 in the south bay. bring your jacket and umbrella and be ready for what could be a dangerous commute home. you can see the deeper green moving on shore, stop it again by 630 check. some of the heaviest rainfall along the coast line in the north bay and down here in the south bay. we stop that clock again after an inch, maybe two inches of rain in the north bay we're going to get another round of really heavy rainfall,

especially in the north bay. this is where you want to take it easy as we head throughout the next 72 hours. it does not stop. i stopped the clock at 5:00 a.m. we're still getting that heavy rainfall. i got the tell you something. the distance between santa rosa and san francisco, 100 miles f. this swings to the south we could get soaked. right now i believe the heaviest rainfall will be in the north bay. we're going to talk totals and keep you updated on what else is to come after the storm passes, there is more rain in the forecast. so stick with us, i'll have the report coming up next. right now let's say good morning to mike inouye. >> wait there's more. looking here, though, right now. we're happy with the roadways starting to dry out. they are damp still. all around the bay nothing unusual as far as traffic for this friday. we have a little slowing northbound 101.

but we've heard it for week, the san jose fire department not meeting response times for its county contract. our unit found the numbers could be even worse because of a time game. sources inside the department along with thousands of internal e-mails tell the story about san jose's fire response times and reveal a bigger problem about the numbers you've been told. >> i think it's important to be accurate in what we say. >> for six months out of 2012, the department reported the county that it met the 90%. are those numbers going to be lower now? >> looking back at the data i would say that yes, those numbers are going to be lower. >>ant at 11:00 we reveal the fire department's fire chief explains e-mails and what he is doing to feign public trust.

good morning to you from russia, a live look at the olympic plaza, the big story this morning. the opening ceremonies. the nations starting to gather as they prepare to enter the stadium before today's big event some of our athletes took to the slopes to get another feel for the downhill course. this is the defending champ bode miller. he's looking good for a repeat. his first run was the fastest of all of the races in training. >> julia mancuso sent out this picture from the starting line. you remember training on the course was halted as some complained they were getting too much air at the bottom of the hill. workers softened the turn to try to limit some of that danger. >> meanwhile, local snowboarder

chas guldemond is psyched he says for tomorrow's slopestyle. >> they tweeted throughout photo saying me and the boys will make the final tomorrow. stoked to see everyone kill it. >> for some reason sending yogurt to russia is an international incident. they are stirring it up getting the fruit off of the bottom a. shipment of chobani got held up. the u.s. government says it's russia's fault. russia says the u.s. hasn't provided the proper paperwork to get yogurt into the country. this is the official yogurt of the olympics, russia doesn't allow the import of american yogurt because of concerns about with american dairy products. chobani will only ship to americans in the olympic village. so far nothing. >> they need their protein. come on. stray dogs remain a problem in sochi. russian website posted this video of a stray dog barking at

cross country skiers. get off my snow. officials have been working on getting rid of dogs in the city and they euthanized hundreds so far. hundreds have been rescued and moved out of town. officials say many of the dogs are vicious and worry one might bite a zbleext no yogurt, stray dogs. the monthly jobs report just what, two minutes away from being released. best indicator of how our economy is doing. >> and we're still tracking some very heavy rainfall on the way to the bay area. you want to make those indoor plans. we'll tell you how much rain we're expecting where you live coming up. >> plus, bank of america apologizing to a local woman this morning after sending her a derogatory letter. what she is saying. alto this morning. we are all over getting a break between the systems now, but there is potential for flooding in the near future. let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. good morning. >> hey, good morning to you. we saw pretty rapid rise out there when it came to our local creeks and streams yesterday. we're counting on more of the same as we get into this weekend. so if you know you live in one of the flood prone areas you do want to make sure you're ready for this. starting tonight continuing into tomorrow, sunday and monday we're talking about rainfall. so this is what we're expecting. our average rainfall for this time of year in santa rosa is about eight inches. right now because of yesterday we're up to 1.5 inches. by the time we get through the weekend we are talking about really making up that deficit up to five inches of rain by monday of next week. look how close we'll be to average by monday. up to three inches of rain. we still desperately need that

bay area woman received a shocking piece of mail from the company. christie smith is live in menlo park. we all get junk mail but this one had a surprising tone about it. >> reporter: yes. good morning to you. happy friday. this one is kind of a head scratcher. we get that junk mail we look at and toss away. then there is another kind that a woman from san francisco got that made her wonder what in the world did he she do. this is a credit card offer envelope she says the bank of america sent her. it says lisa is, then an offensive middle name, mcintire. she tells the times that her mom saw it first, it was sent to her mom's home and then there was a text from her mom. it went like this. interesting piece of junk mail addressed to you, lisa, she responds what, no kidding.

that's how it's addressed. the offer was tied to her membership in the golden key honor society. they did apologize and they are looking into it. they tweeted back at her too saying we're incredibly sorry this happened and are researching so we can take the appropriate action. later the name was inserted sometime it appears between 2004 and 2008. she has been tweeting quite a bit saying in one of them that she would really like to understand who she made mad during those years that would change her name on an honor society data base. i'm sure this is not the last we're going to hear of this one. reporting live in menlo park, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thanks a lot, christie. >> 5:35. new information on the search for a missing morgan hill teen sierra lamar. authorities searched the bottom of a south bay lake yesterday. we won't reveal the exact name of the laying but divers used

new powerful sonar that lets them better locate a body in murky waters. it was for training they said but sources say indeed divers were looking for evidence. lamar disappeared almost two years ago on the way to school. though authorities have not found her body garcia torres is being held in jail accused of her murder. >> the teacher accused of sending pictures to a teen boy will make his court appearance. police say harland thought he met a 17-year-old boy, sent him inappropriate pictures and planned to meet up with him. but the 17-year-old was really an undercover detective. edelman worked in the school district from 1995 to 2013, most recently at the academy of arts and sciences in diamond heights. >> all san jose state students may have to go through diversity training, one of the possible recommendations of an 18-member

task force. they met last night in response to four students charged with a hate crime accused of bullying a black student for weeks. the group will look what time rules, policies and procedures need to be changed. student who is attended say while they are glad the task force is working to make change, they think san jose state has a long way to go. >> san jose and the bay area's diverse population but i think as far as having knowledge about the different cultures is very different from just having statistics. yes, we're diverse but you know, with our knowledge of the different cultures i think that could be worked on. >> it includes students, faculty and alumni. recommendations are due by the end of april. >> let's get to the woman of the hour, meteorologist christina loren, with quite the forecast. >> yeah. you know, it's one of those rain events we do not usually get over the course of a winter. in the bay area.

i have only seen this happen one time. the totals all of the models are forecasting are much higher so we do have the potential for flooding. the forecast shows you not just rain today, tomorrow we're seeing the heaviest downpours and then through sunday and monday still getting heavy rainfall especially in the north bay. right now is your dry break. even if it's getting the fail it's going to be easier. because we have heavy rain on the way. let's dive into the forecast, time out what we're expecting. you saw the clock for you. tonight at 7:00 p.m., these are fresh starting from scratch. not including yesterday. almost .4 inch at that point expected in santa rosa. that ramps up to three inches at 3:00 p.m. tomorrow. you can see here it's not just the north bay that's going to get hammered. we expect high totals as well. stop the clock as we continue the rain showers into your monday at 2:00 p.m. the potential for about five

inches of new rain in santa rosa. we're going to see high totals in the region. you want to make sure you're ready for really, really wet weather. and i know that they are gearing up which brings in bob redell. this is going to be one of those events that hey, flooding definitely likely. how are people preparing? >> reporter: good morning to you. we know there's the possibility of flooding, ponding more likely. if you live in one of those areas with poor drainage you may want to pick up sandbags. there is a sand bag at this location. this is not to suggest that they put these out here in anticipation of this weekend. it's hard to well whether they did or this is their normal tash. you might want to check with 4 local water location is. the storm dumped about an inch

of rain in the bay area, much needed considering the drought that the state has been struggling with. unfortunately nowhere near enough. we're still at roughly 20% of the normal amount of rainfall with this weekend soaker if we get those several inches. maybe we can see that number jump to 30%. yes, that's an approved but nowhere near where we need to be. when you see this rain coming down saying wow, that's a lot of water. not necessarily the case. that ground is very dry, acts like a sponge. it's got to be more saturated before it starts going to the reservoirs, we see the water levels rice. bob redell. >> we're going to be watching the streams and the creeks as we get into this weekend in the santa cruz mountains. and yeah, it starts up as we

our own janelle wang joins us with a sneak peek. good afternoon to you. >> yes. exactly, scott and laura. the opening ceremony just 2 1/2 hours away. today we're learning new details russian pop band tatu will perform a bit of a surprise since they clearly are pro gay rights and russia is clearly anti-gay. we also learned that a famous russian opera singer will be performing the olympic anthem. 230 athletes from team usa will walk through fisht olympic park. 40,000 people can watch. their families are also in the stands. there will be cool special effects as well as a big fireworks show. for the olympic flame it's moving through sochi today an american held the torch. she won four olympic medals including a gold medal in nagano

with the women's u.s. hockey team. the flame will soon be reaching olympic park and lighting this cauldron and like i said two days ago that we heard reports that a russian gymnast will light it. we hear that is vladamir putin's girlfriend. she did win a gold medal in 2004. we'll have to see what happens. you can see behind me since the last hour, picking up a little bit. people are filing into olympic park. it's going to be exciting night here. >> i can't imagine. it's got to be filled with excitement there. >> right there where janelle is. tremendously exciting. of course you can watch the olympic ceremony here on nbc bay area including the lighting of the olympic cauldron, all of the excitement at 7:30 right here on nbc bay area. >> and tonight nbc bay area will host a watch party in sharks ice at stanley's restaurant on south tenth street.

intersection and investigators say he attacked the officer and ripped his holster off his belt and tried to pull the trigger. he couldn't get the gun out of the holster. good son hit, kicked the officer until backup arrived and another officer tased him and took him into custody. >> lawmakers will outline a proposal to help deal with smart phone thefts in california. many of the officials calling it an epidemic, senator leno and the district attorney will join other local leaders to talk about implementing a bill that would require all smart phones to come with kill switches. the switch could be activated remotely. the hope is the bill will deter thieves. >> steve wozniak made surprising comments about apple. details next.
