wo meteorologists tracking the wind and the rain and jeff ranieri is live for us in san francisco but we begin with christina loren who is watching all of it develop. good morning to you. >> good morning, kris. we're in store for some really heavy rainfall for the next 48 hours. i want to bring you up to date with what we've accumulated just over the last 24 hours, over 7 inches of rainfall high atop mt. tam that's where we're getting the heaviest readings up in the higher elevations. but on the valley floor in napa over 5 1/2 inches of rainfall in just the past 24 hours with the potential for an additional 5 to 7 inches up in the north bay as we progress throughout the day today and tomorrow, so your radar tells the story. it's raining all across the board and it has been steadily overnight. i want to show you where the heavy batch is starting to head in. as we head throughout the next 15 to 20 minutes the moderate rainfall from san mateo all the way south to los altos and

redwood city. i'll let you know how much longer we'll be in the thick of it because not all of the bay area is expecting the higher totals and i'll break it down to you. back to you, kris. >> we'll check in with jeff ranieri in san francisco in a bit. the rain is making for dangerous driving around the bay area. in marin county highway 101 was a white knuckle drive as commuters dealt with not only the rain but also with strong winds as well and as always some people were more prepared than others to deal with it. >> it is so rainy. it is so rainy. and it is coming from many different angles. >> almost neurotic about having good windshield wipers and good brakes so -- and i keep the car nice and warm. >> smart lady. the public works department in mill valley is monitoring creek levels this morning as crews cleared debris in creek beds yesterday and to keep things flowing crews will be on call all weekend ready to respond to

any weather-related emergencies. on interstate 80 in placer county, chain controls are in effect and that makes for slow going. of course, there was a potentially explosive situation in concord, though, where fire officials say the driver of this propane truck lost control on the slick roadway, went off the road into a ditch, then smashed into a tree. it took two large cranes to pull the rig out which shut down northbound highway 242 near grant street for some time. fire crews say the good news is that propane tank was empty. >> we feel very fortunate that he was -- had emptied all his propane into different various areas and was coming home with an empty truck, so absolutely. >> the driver of that truck was not injured but a firefighter did suffer a minor injury while responding to the accident. our weather team will be here all weekend long tracking the storms for you and you can also see our live radar on our website nbcbayarea.com.

and the world is watching. it is saturday evening in russia. beautiful look at the olympic flame burning brightly in sochi. it was a nearly flawless opening ceremony last night. ♪ it was an extravaganza, lights and color which opened the sochi olympics. classical dancers and high-tech artistry celebrated russia's past and present. it was a chance for russia to show the world the post-soviet, and there was one misstep. there you go. a little bit of a glitch there. it was a bit glaring although nobody really seemed to mind.

one of the snowflakes failed to transform itself into one of the massive olympic rings. outside of that the ceremony seemed to be trouble free. janelle wang was in the middle of that excitement. we got goosebumps watching from the couch at home. i can't imagine what it was like for you, janelle. >> reporter: it was amazing. it was such a thrill. we could feel the energy and momentum leading up to the opening ceremony and afterwards everyone was so ecstatic, happy to be here. you see the olympic cauldron burning bright and will burn the rest of the games and it's the centerpiece of the cluster and it was lit during opening ceremony and it was a magical moment. you can see and feel the energy. tens of thousands of people from all over the world packed the stadium for the opening ceremony of the 2014 sochi games. >> kazakhstan, whoo! >> reporter: inside usa athletes

posted these photos on social media. corey butner tweeted this picture with a caption enjoying a photo with the people around the place. squaw valley alpine skier julia mancuso instagrahamed this picture and bay area native and gold medalist kristi yamaguchi posted this picture with fellow gold medalist scott hamilton and the moment everyone was waiting for, the lighting of the olympic cauldron and the official start of the winter games. our northern california athletes call it one of the most memorable moments of their lives. >> unbelievable show. i mean, you can tell that the time and effort and everything they put into this was unbelievable. >> reporter: what was the best part? >> every single part was amazing. all the dancers were so good, the ice skaters, everything was so cool, the fireworks. i just wasn't expecting any of that. >> it was awesome. definitely tried to soak it all up, but i don't know if it was even possible. >> reporter: other usa athletes said there were so many

and our storm coverage continues this morning. we are looking live at a picture of san francisco. you can see only half of the transamerica building there in the distance. we can't see the golden gate bridge but jeff ranieri can, our chief meteorologist is on morning duty this morning and joins us live from san francisco. you usually look so dapper in a suit, and now you're soaked. >> reporter: yes. but do you know what, i don't mind. it's the weather, we love it. we haven't had rain in a long time, and i don't know if you can make it out, but the rain is coming down pretty hard at times in sheets here in san francisco. back here behind me we're at the source of where all of this moisture is streaming in at the mouth of the bay at the golden gate bridge and, again, it's tapping into some pacific moisture, some subtropical moisture that will feed throughout the region saturday and sunday and the golden gate bridge will be the definitive

line between where we see some of that heaviest rainfall as we head throughout the next 24 hours. in fact, we will have some flooding concerns with us. let's go ahead and take a look some of the highest concerns will likely be in marin, napa, sonoma, also san francisco county, that's where we'll have to watch the creek, rivers and streams that could rise quickly. also some issues with some mud and debris flow could become a problem as well. if you're doing any traveling across the bay as christina mentioned earlier in the show, roadways are soaked. it is going to be very slick. if you're thinking of heading up to the sierra at all, watch out. winter storm warning in place until this evening. it likely could be extended into sunday. where totals on top of 2 feet we've already had could range another 2 to 3 feet at some of the highest elevations. as you come back out here again live in just a moment, again, the rainfall coming down pretty good in san francisco. totals have ranged 1 to 2 inches. it is unbelievable to think about this wet weather we are

finally getting, kris. one of the driest januarys on record. record-setting heat in january. driest calendar year on record in 2013 and this likely could be some of the wettest stretch of weather since december of 2012, so we'll we've got flooding concerns for us today, i'm kind of enjoying it a little bit out here even though i'm getting all wet. >> it's been so long we had rain, my kid actually asked if they were going to cancel school because of the rain. i assured her no. thanks so much, jeff, we'll check in with you in a little bit. san jose police are looking for an imposter. a man who investigators say pretended to be an officer to pick up a woman who he then sexually assaulted. here's the sketch of the man who flashed a badge and identified himself as a police officer. he forced the woman into his car and drove to a parking lot and then assaulted her. detectives said he drove off in this dodge durango which was

caught on surveillance camera. no arrests despite the frustration of a pleasanton family, david lamont was beaten into a coma outside his own home as he tried to quiet down some teens. police announced they won't make any arrests because they say they had insufficient evidence to bring charges against anyone. the family said they are disappointed but they are focusing on lamont's recovery. no hollywood script for clint eastwood, he saved a man's life. clint eastwood did the heimlich maneuver at a dinner on wednesday night. the 83-year-old acting legend was at -- was volunteering at a dinner at the pebble beach golf tournament when the tournament director started to choke on a piece of cheese. >> no question. there's no question he saved my life. i couldn't breathe. we've got a party tonight for all the players and he will be

janelle wang is there for us. we'll check in with her in just a little bit. you do not have to go to sochi to get into the olympic spirit. in fact, in the south bay people celebrated the start of the winter games in true olympian style. hundreds of people showed up at sharkside in san jose to watch the opening ceremony altogether and they had their own opening ceremony of sorts complete with a parade. they honored past american olympi olympi olympians. koralevya was born in russia and moved to the u.s. when she was 9. >> it brings back so many memories from london. >> there were also quite a few young figure skaters, maybe future olympians. they say they are looking forward to seeing the 15-year-old figure skater polina

edmunds compete during the ol olympic games. the history of russia is, of course, very rich and the games in sochi are set to highlight that country and its culture, so how do those in the local russian american community feel about sochi hosting the olympics? stephanie truong has that answer from san francisco. >> we're here at the riviera in sochi which as most of you know is the russian equivalent of coney island. >> reporter: a san franciscan playing tour guide. he's hoping the beauty of the town he called home for two years will translate into american appreciation for russia. the beauty. >> you can truly go from the black sea to the mountains in one hour. >> reporter: and its cultural diversity. >> there's at least 20 or 25 different nationalities in a

very small region there. >> reporter: but he and others are hoping the olympic games will settle another kind of score. >> there are some misconceptions about russia. and people -- there's a bit of mistrust. >> reporter: and that's where san francisco's russian center comes in, celebrating its 75th year. the center's focus is to highlight russian history featured at the russian museum next door and preserve the language and culture and -- >> during the cold war when everyone thought, you know, we were communists. now everyone seems to think that russians are all mafias. >> reporter: and added concern is all the negativity that followed russia's law that went into effect last june banning any talk of homosexuality around minors. americans here believe the games will hem turn that tide. >> russians honor athletes.

>> i'm very glad the games were in sochi and i hope they go very well. >> reporter: stephanie truong, nbc bay area news. >> the russian center in san francisco will celebrate its 75th year with its annual festival. and you can continue to watch the winter games right here on nbc bay area. our coverage starts today at 2:30 this afternoon and you can also get the latest updates on nbcbayarea.com. to our weather coverage now and meteorologist christina loren is looking at the weekend forecast and we're all getting soaked although the north bay, i mean, completely soaked. >> almost to the point where you don't want to be out there driving around in these conditions. good morning to you, kris, good morning to you at home. the live pictures tell the story, you can see in the south bay not nearly as wet in the north bay and san francisco. areas to the north of the golden gate bridge are definitely getting hammered.

we'll only climb an additional 3 to 5 degrees throughout the day. on the seven-day forecast we'll see a little bit of a warm-up as we head into next week but this is not the only rain that is in your forecast. i'm going to touch on that at the very end of this broadcast. let's talk about the areas that we're really watching for you as of right now because we do have some flood reports to tell you about. 880 at broadway and oakland, take it easy through there. flooding reported. and 807th street in san francisco and one oone and san clemente in corte madera. the live radar shows a lot more rain on the way and i can't even storm track any of these heavier cells because you can see how heavy it's coming down all across the bay area. but what i can tell you is this big batch of yellow, this heavy to moderate rainfall is on the way to the south bay and we're expecting in half moon bay by 8:02 and in the south bay in the 9:00 to 10:00 hour make sure you are ready for heavy downpours all across the bay area.

steady rainfall and slick conditions out there especially on our local roadways. watch the construction zones very carefully. as that rain continues throughout the day we'll likely get more of those flood reports. we'll be on top of this for you and in addition to the rain coming in we have some wind picking up as well and that's when we could see downed trees because our ground now at this point is very saturated. we get another wave of heavy moisture on sunday and i want to show you futurecast because this tells the story. we stop the clock for you. as of this afternoon right at lunchtime you can see here plenty of heavy to moderate rainfall all across the bay area. that will continue until about 4:00 p.m. and we'll get a little bit of a break only the lighter stuff coming through until tonight at about 11:00 p.m. the heavy rain comes back and as we head through tomorrow and the south bay looks like we're going to get slammed down here mostly between about 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. there is light at the end of the tunnel it won't be raining all next week. we'll get a break monday into tuesday but as we head through the end of the week and get closer to valentine's day next friday, the subtropical moisture

much-needed rain soaking the bay area this morning. looking live at san jose out our window in palo alto, and fremont raindrops on the lens and in dublin, well, you can barely see it. thanks so much for joining us, i'm kris sanchez. we've got live team coverage of the storm this weekend, our team of meteorologists not taking the weekend off in order to keep you updated on how much that rain will impact your weekend. we begin with christina loren and jeff ranieri is in san francisco and we'll check in with him in just a minute. >> good morning, kris. we want to make sure everybody is aware of how much rain is on the way and how much we've already accumulated because we do have flood potential and as we head throughout the next 48 hours that will continue to ramp up. so far these are the biggest numbers we have to report. over 5.5 inches on the valley floor in napa. higher elevations already accumulating over 7.25 inches of rainfall so far and there's a lot more on the way.

here's san jose we're at a fresh 1 inch and the same for san francisco. because this does not involve the totals that we accumulated on thursday. as we head throughout the next 48 hours this is what we're anticipating an additional 5 to 7 inches of rainfall up in the north bay. 3 to 5 inches out in the tri-valley, 2 to 3 along the east shore and ear in san jose 1 to 2 inches along the peninsula, we're expecting an additional 2 to 3 inches of rainfall as we head throughout the next 48 hours. and you can see why, the radar lit up like a christmas tree this morning and it's coming in so fast the highways are not equipped to receive this kind of rain rate. i want to take it live to our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri, he's live at crissy field, and, jeff, tell me, how is it out there? you're out there in the thick of it. how are people actually dealing with the wet weather even in san francisco where it typically doesn't come down this hard this fast? >> reporter: we're not seeing too many people out on the roadways this morning. i can tell you from driving through it this morning, there's

so much rain coming down on your car, it's hard to even see what's in front of you even with the wipers on full blast. we're also already starting to see that water pond up. you can probably see in my live shot and also from how wet i am how hard that rain is coming down. also getting winds 15 to 30 miles per hour. back here behind me, of course, the famous golden gate bridge. that is where the main moisture source will be moving through today. that subtropical moisture tap that christina loren has been talking about. it's feeding right into the mouth of the bay and, again, that's going to be the definitive line between some of the heaviest rainfall we think from san francisco right up to the north. that's where we could see an additional 1 to 3 inches throughout the next 36 hours and this is something we have not had seen in quite some time, again. we've got a storm system with the added boost of the subtropical moisture. let's take you to the radar right now. we saw some images earlier but want to take you to what we're seeing and you're going to be able to see there is plenty more moisture coming our way. it's, like, a river of

atmospheric water moving in across the bay and some heavier cells headed right towards us right now. i know that camera doesn't pick it up sometimes but it's coming down good out here at this point. we'll also take you up to the sierra where it is snowing very heavy. treacherous and dangerous conditions on interstate 80 and highway 50. if you're thinking of heading that way get ready for a 6 to 10-hour commute possible with that slow traffic. there is a winter storm warning in effect and also flood concerns no matter where you're going for today. let's go ahead and get a look, though, at the highest threat and that will be marin, napa, sonoma counties also northern san francisco county. that's for creeks, rivers and streams will be rising above where they should be and we'll also have to watch out for mud and debris flows at the coastal mountains. when we come back out here live, this is not feet of water. it's a few inches but it's a good example of how that ground just can't take any more water. we've seen about 3 to 4 inches in the past 36 hours. so at some point the ground,

again, just can't hold that water. and, you know, we've got a building up here, but you think about the coastal mountains in the north bay that's where a lot of the water continues to rush down and that's, again, where we may have some problems as we head throughout the evening and also on sunday with another wave of wet weather coming our way. i said it before but i'll say it again, 2013, the driest calendar year on record. we have drought conditions in place. this likely could be some of the wettest weather since december of 2012. i didn't wear a hat today. i didn't put the hood on because it's been so long since i felt this rain and i wanted all of you at home to see, again, how hard it is raining right out here in san francisco. if you are inside right now, it's a good bet to say there all day long. >> i think that is good advice. thank you very much, jeff and christina. and the rain will make for dangerous driving conditions all weekend long all around the bay area as jeff mentioned. in marin county highway 101 was a white knuckle drive as commuters dealt with not only the rain but strong winds and as always some people were more

it's only 7:30 here, we're good to go, i will stay up all night if you wanted me to. we're at the team figure skating event is continuing tonight. team usa is currently in seventh place after the men's and pair short program on thursday. tonight the ladies skate and ashley wagner must pull off a stellar performance in order for team usa to advance and possibly medal, but even if you don't have tickets, people are still enjoying the park. ♪ >> reporter: people from all over the world showing their patriotism through their music, olympic park filled with tourists. their favorite spot? the olympic rings, nonstop picture taking here. we met a couple of americans who traveled from southern california to attend their first olympics. they even had tickets to last night's opening ceremony. >> it was amazing.

good saturday morning to you. i am meteorologist christina loren and we have a lot of wet weather out there this morning. we are going to see this continue for most of the day, so you probably want to stay indoors. the great news is we have the olympics for uf right here on nbc bay area. so, in addition to the heavy rainfall at this point the winds are picking up as well, which means our opportunity for to see trees go down enhances. as we head throughout the next 48 hours. your wind speeds are relatively

strong. they are coming straight out of the south which, again, our prevailing wind direction that we typically see here in the bay area. so, we'll keep on top of that for you, but as you can see there's a lot rain coming in and we've already got areas of flooding we're watching. i-80 at 7th street, 101 at san clemente and also an area where you really want to slow it down and travel cautiously. this is your live radar right now. this is where the heaviest rainfall is coming in. and you'll notice this organizing band of rich moisture right now getting ready to slam the peninsula, that means it's going to get worse as we head throughout the next six hours, really want to make sure you're aware of that. take you into the city of san francisco and all of this is moderate to heavy rainfall coming down throughout all of your districts there and this is 101 through san rafael, very dangerous driving conditions. heavy rainfall and slick roads throughout the day and as we head through the day and this afternoon we'll get another heavy wave of moisture and then as we head throughout tomorrow another one comes in. we're talking about the potential to accumulate an

president. so, the president, the white house calls you and says we want to put you to the delegation. you, then, realize what this delegation is. did you at any point feel blindsided or just betrayed at all by the president? >> you know, at first i sort of scratched my head and then i looked at it as an opportunity because the platform is so huge. it's literally our president sending a message of tolerance and diversity to another country and basically saying we as americans are moving forward and if you don't keep up with us we're going to move forward without you. >> reporter: i've known you pretty well for almost ten years now, you're no pushover. >> no. >> reporter: if you had president obama's cell phone number, how would that conversation go? >> i would actually thank him for having me. i've been toying with the idea i think i want to write him an e-mail and thank him for choosing me for this delegation and giving me the opportunity to spread his word. and to spread his idea.

>> reporter: what's among the first things that come back to your mind when you think about 1988? >> i think probably the very end of the program how i felt at the very end of all my visualizations and manifestations coming to fruition at that moment. there's no better feeling than, like, literally having that moment where you're looking back at what you just did and went -- and saying to yourself i did it, i really did it, and it was the most important night of my life. >> reporter: did you ever think of, i don't want to say down side, but just all the work and the struggle to get to that point. >> i think about that a lot. i think about that a lot. but that's really part of me still now to this day because my work ethic i carry with me to nowadays. there are things from the olympics that are so far in the past like the end of that program that i'll never feel again because it was a once in a lifetime type of thing. but the work ethic and the tools that i learned to prepare myself for that moment are still tools that i use to this day. >> you want to keep doing tv

our storm coverage continues all weekend long and let's check in with christina loren and jeff ranieri one last time. the whole team working this weekend in order to keep you updated on how the rain will impact your weekend. we begin with christina loren. >> good saturday morning to you. want to make the indoor plans at least for the next several hours because look at this moderate batch of rainfall getting ready to slam most of the peninsula and will work its way in as we head throughout the day. i stop the clock and by 7:00 p.m. still getting the heavy downpours and take you into tomorrow morning 8:00 a.m. and heavy rain in the south bay and we'll finally get a break as we wake up and meet back here on monday morning but not before we accumulate potentially upwards of 5, maybe 7 inches more. in the north bay you'll see we won't get as much rain in the south bay because we get the rain shadow effect, 1 to 2 inches a decent total and enough to do flooding. let's take you out live to jeff
