a weather alert across the bay area. heavy rain still coming down in some locations. we have live team coverage. and a new olympic sport proves to be gold fort americans as team usa is dominating the slopestyle course. >> did you feel blindsided by the president? >> brian boitano tells us how his life has changed. thanks for joining us on this rainy sunday night. the storm is not finished. a flash flood watch is in effect for the north bay tonight until 9:00 tonight. >> there was lots of it today.

unusually small rivers and streams are running high. the south bay finally getting a taste of the rain. this is a live look at downtown san jose. >> we have live team coverage. nbc bay area's monty francis is in sonoma county. and we have two meteorologists tracking the storm. jeff ranieri is looking at rainfall totals, but first we want to begin with rob mayeda. >> finally the rain has arrived in the south bay. it took about 36 hours for it to drop out of the north bay. the santa cruz mountains picking up about another inch of rain. you can see the rain still stretching into the north bay. and it's a the north bay counties tonight that will still see the flash flood watch in effect through about 9:00. that means localized flooding is still possible. which is precisely what we saw out in mill valley.

and monty, we had some damage to storefronts in mill valley today. >> reporter: that's right. we're outside of a bar called the 2 a.m. club. this bar along with a taco shop, both flooded. they've put out some sandbags here in case the water starts to rise in the next few hours. now employees spent the day mopping up and disinfecting. the flooding was most severe at the back of the bar where the bathroom drains were taking on water. the flooding was even worse at joe's taco shop where he had about a foot of standing water in his office earlier today. he says a storm drain causes problems every year because it backs up and overflows by taking on water from a nearby tributary of the nearby creek. he's complained for years, but nothing has been done about it. >> it's just a losing battle. after three hours of paying ten

guys to fight water that's coming in faster than can you get rid of it, i've got to send those guys home, losing that money. can't be open for business. >> we've been shut down. we should be up and running. it's lost revenue. >> reporter: now both businesses here have cement or tile floors, so the damage from the water was minimal. the big loss is from lost business because both were forced to close. the taco shop owner told me he's probably lost about $5,000 today, just in lost revenue. both of these businesses hope to open by tomorrow afternoon. but of course that will depend on what happens with the rain and the weather tonight. live in mill valley, monty francis. what a mess. the flooding is caused partly by the staggering amount of rain in the last 40 hours, and in a couple cases coupled with high tides and blocked storm drains. it's a whole lot of water in a short amount of time.

>> the ground is having such a hard time soaking up any more water. of course the flooding pictures we saw. we're going to take you to a ner perspective. focus on the red and orange as many of you now, some of the highest totals coming up in the north bay. another look at how the rain's spread across the rye john. you can see throughout napa, santa rosa, several different zones of totals that range 8 to 10 inches. it is phenomenal. mt. tamalpais, 21 inches. mill valley, over 10 inches. ben lomond over 8 as well. los gatos, just under 5 inches. rob mayeda will have more coming up in a few minutes. but here is the other staggering thing. over two months of rain in just four days.

the february average, 5.35. and the january average combined, we now have 11.3 inches in just four days for napa. this now brings us to 41% of average. so no, we're not at 100% of average, but we have made up for a lot. we're going to have more on the snow pack coming up later and where we think the estimate is of the current snow pack with anywhere from 3 to 5 feet. the north bay and san francisco have gotten hammered by the rain, and now the south bay is finally seeing some of the wet stuff. nbc bay area's kimberly terry live in san jose. >> reporter: we saw it start raining here at about 5:00 here in san jose. you can see the guadalupe creek here. it's barely moving now. the rain has been heavy at times. right now not much of anything. but of course that could change. this is only the second storm the south bay has seen this winter, but the deputy operating officer at the santa clara water

district says there need to be several more big storms to make a marked difference. >> it would take a good, you know, 8 inches of rain, basically, to start seeing any measurable runoff into our local reservoirs. the watersheds are that dry. >> reporter: earlier we in an area that would normally be covered in water. the reservoir is part of the system that normally collects water, but as you can see, mother nature not cooperating. a water use reduction target has been set at 10% and they'll consider additional recommendations at the february 25 meeting. the hope is that there will be many more rainy days just hike this. live in san jose, nbc bay area news. thanks very much. and you can keep up to date on the weather on our website, we also have interactive radars.

determination to really do what i'm capable of. >> reporter: determination did not help american noah hoffman. the cross country skier crashed today and finished 35th. team russia finally got on the podium today striking a bronze in the women's 3,000 meter skate, for their first medal of these games. coming up tonight in prime time, the broadcast of team figure skating competition and men's alpine skiing, featuring american downhill veteran, bodhi miller. then late night you can watch tucker west. the 18 year old slider may already be a winner with the ladies. after his father's appearance on the today show this morning. >> i just want to say to all the young ladies out there, tucker is very single. now he's a little shy. so you have to reach out to him. >> reporter: that's a little

a weather alert faesaffecti the bay area. the rain coming down, rob mayeda coming up in just a few minutes. an officer shot and injured a carjacking suspect. the suspect threatened a resident with a shotgun and demanded his vehicle just about 3:00 in the morning. this is down the street from the san jose country sclub golf course. they found the suspect a few blocks away and stopped him after a short chase. police say he is expected to survive his swrrys. nearly 9 million pounds of beef have been recalled. no reported illnesses have been

with brian boitano whose life has changed since the announcement. >> reporter: how long's it been? 1988? >> who's counting, for god's sake. 26 years. >> reporter: 26 years since striking gold and building the boy taun/brand. skating career which has fueled a tv career. slicing and dicing for the food network and rebuilding his home in italy for hgtv. but it's here at his long time san francisco home where the 50 year old boitano is adjusting to his new life. >> the fact that we've got folks like billie jean king or brian boitano who themselves have been world class athletes that everybody acknowledges for their excellence and character who also happen to be members of the

lgbt. >> reporter: a private life that was made public. did you at any point feel blindsided or betrayed by the president? >> you know, at first, i sort of scratched my head and then i looked at it as an opportunity. because the platform is so huge. it's literally our president sending a message of tolerance and diversity to another country and basically saying we, as americans are moving forward. and if you don't keep up with us, we're going to move forward without you. >> reporter: you're no pushover. >> no. >> reporter: if you had president obama's cell phone number, how would that conversation go? >> i would actually thank him for having me. i've been toying with the idea. i think i want to write him an e-mail and thank him for choosing me in this delegation and giving me the opportunity to spread his word and to spread his idea. >> reporter: what's among the

first things that come back to your mind when you think about 1988? >> i think probably the very end of the program, how i felt at the very end of all my visualizations and manifestations coming to fruition at that moment. there's no better feeling than, like, literally having that moment where you're looking back at what you just did and saying to yourself, i did it. i really did it. and it was the most important night of my life. >> reporter: do you ever think of all the -- i don't want to say down side -- but the work and struggle to get to that point? >> i think about that a lot. but that's really part of me now, to this day. because my work ethic i carry with me nowadays. there are thinks in the olympics that are so far in the past, like the end of the program that i'll never feel again, but the work ethic and the tools that i learned to prepare myself for that moment are still tools that i use to this day. >> reporter: you want to keep

doing tv work? or is there another project you want to take on? you've done the books, you're doing tv, is there something else? >> i've always wanted to and kosh the news on nbc. one business note. boitano says he's been receiving more calls and interest from agents and producers since he's come out about his sexuality. you can also see our high profile interviews. go to nbcbayarea.com/the interview. >> i'm not sure what you just said, but he said he wanted to be a nbc news anchor, which i think was a direct hit at raj and at you as well. let's check in with the weather. >> it's picked up in intensity, especially in the peninsula and the south bay. but as all this moisture streams up, the snow totals are piling up, and as jeff ranieri joins us once again for some of the

totals that no doubt will shock many of you. >> it is phenomenal. we've been combing through all the numbers this afternoon. and it keeps adding up and adding up every single hour as we go through. so let's get a hook at some of those totals. kirkwood, 6.8 feet. now what we have done is taken a look here at the skmoe pack versus the average. you can see how far below the average line we have been in december, january and february. it was just 18% of normal on that check last week. a gift of 3.7 inches of snow water. now as we advance this hour estimate of where we think this snow pack could be this evening if they did a measurement would be somewhere around 40% of normal. we certainly have made some head way, and rob, as we went over this number to wind things up, it looks like it could be some

of the wettest weather since october of 2009. >> almost one fifth to one sixth our total winter snow pack and rainfall coming in for parts of the north bay. the north bay catching a little bit of a break. moderate rain at times up and down the tri valley. a little bit of light rain but heavy rain over highway 17, over the summit and castroville and monterey. for almost two days it was anchored in the north bay. but in the meantime we still have this flash flood watch in effect for north bay counties for some still brief heavy rain at times. now hour by hour we're going to see the rain begin to taper off. heading in to tomorrow morning we're going to see maybe a lingering shower along the hilltops, but after that, the

main event has passed us by. not that much, enough to wet the ground, but nowhere near the several inches of rain we've seen over the last few days. most locations picking up another quarter inch of rain as the last remnants move on through. far north bay on wednesday. then as we head towards next weekend, looks like right around this time we will see a colder system possibly push more rain and sierra snow our way. so we're going to get a nice little break and then perhaps more rain and snow heading towards next weekend. here you go, the temperatures tomorrow, mild outside with gradual clearing. very likely some thick fog in a few spots for tomorrow morning. we should sigh temperatures in the mid-60s by midweek before we watch more rain and snow possibly, coming in for next weekend. back to you. thanks a lot. >> and coming up, an american bobsledder went viral when he posted a photo of a broken

. there is no denying it's a fun activity, but skiing and snowboarding can be dangerous. and when it comes to oversight, the investigative unit found there is little of it. >> you have the trail making policies. >> it was a simple question. do resorts have a safety plan available to the public. last year we were told they establish safety plans to prevent accidents. >> resorts have safety plans which are jgermain. >> if we went we could see that? >> their safety plan? sure. >> and so we asked to see that safety plan at more than a half-dozen resorts in the lake tahoe area.

welcome back to nbc bay area. when the number three stanford team went to play the huskies today, they were riding a 62-game road winning streak against conference opponents. so, of course, a 12-10 washington team wasn't going to snap that streak, right? absolutely wrong. first half, huskies up 3. kelsey plumb, three point range. she has three threes in this game. later she makes the layup.
