♪ on the good ship lollipop >> breaking news, 4d icon shirley temple black has died. good morning. good tuesday morning. it's 4:30. >> you can't help but love that video, a statement from temple's agent says the child star died of natural causes in her home surrounded by loved ones. temple found fame as a child star 18 numerous depression area films. after her acting career temple became active in politics
4:31 am
including an unsuccessful bid as a republican congress and became the u.s. ambassador to czechoslovakia and ghana. >> down to our other top story the weather and nbc bay area weather advisory before you head out the door here's a look at what you may see now fog blanketing much of the bay area on the left, the view looking into san francisco on the right the drive through fremont. >> let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. there's a lot of fog out there. take it easy before you head out the door. is gotting to move out? >> yeah, it will clear up. we're going to have to wait for it. good morning to you laura and scott. good morning to you at home. because your city reports 10 miles of visibility or better does not mean you will not encounter thick pockets of fog on the way to work. my way up from campbell was pretty dangerous. i traveled about 10 miles. you want to give yourself extra time this morning and this fog will get worse before it gets better. i'm going to describe what's
4:32 am
creating that fog coming up in a moment. right now temperatures mostly in the 50, we have a cool day ahead. we're counting on showers for tomorrow. lots to talk bin your full forecast. watch out for the fog. back to you. >> downtown san jose you see the city lights reflecting off of the fog. visibility could be a factor on your drive in to work. >> i stop at almost every green light. bob redell is live with more. how is it out there? >> reporter: well, yeah, we're at 85 south at 82. good morning. not as bad as maybe what christina saw on her way in or what i saw on the way in from livermore where visibility was easily less than a quarter mile but there is this dense fog advisory, just into effect about 45 minutes ago. that includes the peninsula, south bay, at the east bay and the north bay. so basically most of the bay area. and when they issue the dense
4:33 am
fog advisory it's because they are telling us there could be visibilities of less than a quarter mile. clearly here 85, south 82, visibility is probably more like a mile. it's not going to affect the commute through here at least not right now. keep in mind if you have a long commute going through a lot of areas, like i said you could be hitting those, livermore, campbell, where your visibility is going to be less. if you are in those areas where you have pea soup on the roads, remember you don't want to flash your brights to see better because you end up with the white wall staring back at you. if you have fog lights you want to do those or your beams on regular, not on the high because it does become very blinding. again, dense fog advisory issued by the national weather service around 3:50 this morning. they are going to say that's in effect until 9:00 so through the morning commute. right now our morning commute clearly has not started in mountain view. i wonder if traffic mike is seeing in action. >> bob, pretty much as you saw
4:34 am
because of the volume of traffic, bob is right. there is light traffic now but we're looking at the fremont shot. i turn the cameras south. as i drove down this stretch not so long ago not early enough i was a little late and i had to slow further because we had visibility issues. from mission boulevard south on 880 into milpitas out of the fremont area we have dense fog. it was down to a quarter mile. it was clearer there. this here is san jose, 101 as you head south toward 680. even tougher to see the houses on the other side of the freeway. this is palo alto camera. so north of where bob is, now it's deceptive. our camera is atop a high rise hotel across from ikea and it's the low clouds hovering just above the deck making it tough to see these cars but driving on 101 is a little clearer than this might appear.
4:35 am
still you have to lower speeds. you have bright -- the high beams make it tougher to see. we're looking to the north bay where a smooth drive continues for 101. we'll watch as the fog changes your conditions. no big incidents, that's fortunate. >> fog down here in a lot of parts, snow in the sierra and night skiers zipped along five feet of fresh snow last night. some places got more. kirkwood had eight feet of snow. at the 50-50 brewing company in truckee the new snow means business is good. >> i think a lot of people figured out the snow was wet mixed with rain so it was busy but not as crazy busy as it would be this time of year. >> despite several feet of snow at the highest elevations in the past few days, state water officials do not think it will have much impact on the drought. >> our weather steam keeping an

eye on the radar. another round of rain could be coming soon. christina loren will be back with a more in depth look at today's forecast. you can get weather alerts in your neighborhood sent to your inbox. visit our website nbcbayarea.com. >> let's turn to sochi, the olympics and a live look outside this morning. that's the mountain cluster in sochi. this is where several events are happening now. >> many of those are going to air in prime time tonight. right now we're going to give you a peek at some of the results that have already happened. >> if you would rather wait until tonight to find out close your eyes, wait for the music to end. we'll tell you when to come on back. >> safe to come on back.

try not to look surprised or anything. >> right now snowboarder shaun white competing for a shot at olympic history skblxt he is hoping to be the first american man to win the same winter olympic event three times, talking about the half-pipe. many of the riders have concerns about the safety of the course. rider after rider tested that run. there were dozens of fall, only a few tricks. a lot of complaints. many say the rising temperature causing the snow to turn to slush. >> it's not best. i mean, i don't know. i don't want to bag on it but it's disappointing. just the weather and the fact that it's so soft in the middle it's hard to get across it wall to wall. you know, we're dealing with it. >> danny davis who is considered white's biggest competition called the course, quote, garbage. he says it's a shame the quality of the half-pipe doesn't match
4:38 am
the riders. >> this time johnny quinn not alone. his bobsled teammate tweeted these photos of quinn trying to pry open the elevator door. quinn's attempts to free his friend less successful than when he was trapped in a bathroom a few days ago. quinn says he saw just one option when he found himself in this bathroom with no way out. he busted out. >> i hit it even harder and my fist went through the door. when i saw the light of the room come in hey, time to get out of here. >> i opened the door and turned the corner. johnny is there in a towel with a blank stare on his face. >> quinn is not going to compete until next saturday when the four-man bobsled event kicks off. and check this out. this is a picture tweeted by steven langton. the caption, the team men's meeting and the door is locked. where is johnny quinn when you

accumulations. as we head throughout the day today, this is going to stick with us. livermore down to a quarter mile visibility here. we've got really thick fog moving all the way across the south bay this morning. so even though your city like san francisco for example, is reporting 10 miles or better, you are still going to run into thick fog on the way to work. we bring in mike inouye. you know how it looks. >> we took this shot, this is on the traffic as it was flowing westbound 580 right around as thea hara coming in through dublin. we can barely see the lights out of the fog and you can see actually the silhouette of the shopping center there. that's way over there. let me get you the fog map, the orange, the arrow was there where the camera is. it's where the arrow is. and the orange, that's where there is going to be tough visibility. there you go. smoother flow because it was relatively light for the tri-valley even though the bottom of the screen the south
4:41 am
bay doesn't show that orange we did see from our live cameras and driving through the area patches of pretty thick fog through san jose, campbell, milpitas, careful out there as that moves around. there was early morning fog for the dumbarton bridge which is rare in the bay area. probably for the newark side. you can see clearly across, no fog impeding the view of the high rise. watch along the coast and the fog will drift around as it will because it's not anchored. this is on the oakland side. a smooth drive from the bay bridge toll plaza. whoops. then you can't see the clouds above. that's a note about the low clouds around the bay area. back to you. >> thanks much. 4:41. still ahead, prestigious honor for willie brown, not everybody happy about it. >> the teenager accused of building bombs halfway across
