♪ animal crackers in my soup >> she captured the hearts of generations and beyond. this morning shirley temple black, the little girl who lit up the silver screen and as an adult served her country as an ambassador has died at her bay area home at the age of 85. such a classic. good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. a child star, she became a legend at the age of 3, cultivated a legacy, spanned for decades. shirley temple was born in southern california, but spent her later years here in the bay area in the town of woodside where she passed away overnight. peggy bunker joins us live in woodside. people all over the world mourning the loss of an icon. >> reporter: she really is an icon, no other word for it.

there was no other child actor like her, maybe there never will be again. the era of singing and dancing movies seems like it's over and the fact that shirley temple black was able to master those at 2 1/2, 3 1/2 years old, that's how old she was when she started performing. she left her life behind for a big family life. here she was ♪ on the good ship holly pop >> she was the most popular child movie star of all time. she lifted the country's spirits during the depression. she passed away at 85 monday night. from 1935 to 1938 she was the box office draw all over the u.s. and in britain. of course characterized by those bouncy curls her trademark look. her manners, composure, they exceeded her years even as a young child. shed that social graces of someone much older. she seemed to be able to withstand the pressures of

hollywood. she said it was fun. watch how she handled this high pressure moment when she received a mini oscar. >> thank you very much, mr. cobb. mommy, can i go home now? >> reporter: adorable. mommy, can i go home now. she went on to make more movies in her teen years. they didn't do as well. you see what a beauty she was. it was that little girl that they wanted to see and of course all little girls grow up. she didn't let it bother her. she decided to turn her life from hollywood to homemaking. she became a mother to several children, moved to the bay area. she also was on numerous trips around the world as an ambassador. the family has released a statement this morning talking about their beloved mother. we salute her for a life of remarkable achievements as an actor, as a diplomat but most

importantly as our beloved mother, grabbedmother and great grandmother. she was married for 55 years to the late charles alden black. she is survived by several children. very busy here in woodside. a lot of people coming to the neighborhood to remember shirley temple black. this is a very exclusive area, lots of gated long driveways as is hers. she lived here for so many years and tried to serve the state both in politics and also serve the country as an ambassador. most of us will remember what an incredible contribution she made to our country as a whole, plitic hi and also in the entertainment world. she will be very, very missed. peggy bunker, "today in the bay." >> thank you so much. also point out our producers went to lengths to make it quiet there and that is not our truck. >> we do have video this morning. this is where shirley temple black's star should be on the hollywood walk of fame. it was removed recently because

thick fog out there. >> definitely. one of those mornings you don't want to mess around. you may walk out your door and it's clear, once you hit the highway you run into those thick patches of fog, you lose visibility and it becomes a dangerous situation. so keep that in mind. if you are looking for the seven-day forecast we always have it at the bottom of your screen. i want to focus on this fog. this will be a factor not only for the first part of the day, those low clouds are going to limit your sunshine especially in san francisco. we're not expected to break out of the 50s. look at this, fairfield down to 3/4 mile. half mile visibility. that's it in santa rosa. the the fog is drifting around really in the south bay. we're at two miles in san jose, as i drove up from campbell this morning i can tell you for the most part it was a foggy and dangerous drive. it was really not that many people out on the highway so. wherever you're headed give yourself extra time. you want to dress for the two parts of the day. in the tri-valley we expect to hit the mid-60s. 63 along the peninsula, and 63

degrees in the north bay. so i have been promising you showers, that's in my next report, where and how early our next round of rain moves in. you don't want to be caught off guard. right now, though, let's check your drive and mike, it's looking thick out there. not just the fog, the volume as well. >> yes. thick as far as the volume of traffic. it's tuesday so we see the heaviest commute during the day. next squeak a vacation on monday for we say see more packing it in. this is 101 southbound. the curves at terra linda, the lights are glowing. this view is okay. we have great visibility here. let me show you the maps north of there into santa rosa. out of novato and the orange here as folks know that's our road weather index indicating very low visibility likely for 101 out of santa rosa where kiss tina talked about low visibility down through novato. 37 westbound shows slowing on

the right side. by the time you get to 121 you are moving through the area. a smooth drive across the bridges into the east bay. the east shore freeway shows slowing. we'll give you a look at the toll plaza where the backup is. the metering lights were turned on well before 6:00 b. 4:50. that's early for a tuesday even. the backup moving for the fast track lanes. we'll see how things are shaping up for fremont. a smooth drive as you travel toward the south bay. the fog is drifting around but we have patches. back to you. thank you. let's go back to the winter games and give you a live look at the olympic flame, the torch burning bright down in the olympic plaza in sochi near the black sea coast. most of the focus here in the slope, in the mountains, about 30 miles from the city. >> tonight northern california

julie mancuso getting practice runs in ahead of more rounds of competition. she's making history. you see her smile there. janelle wang live in sochi this morning. you spoke to mancuso earlier. how is she feeling about the next events coming up? still celebrating no doubt. >> reporter: yes, she still is celebrating and ready to go, kind of like a dry run for the next event coming up so it was kind of her to stop and chat with us for a few moments. she is such a decorated skier, she now has four olympic medals including last night's bronze. she won it in the super combined, two runs, downhill and slal slalom. she finished first in the downhill which left her confident but battled through the slalom course. she was happy to medal. >> it feel as little bit surreal. it's exciting. i knew i wanted to come to sochi and get a medal. just being able to go into my

first event and crossing the finish line with two good runs enough to get a bronze, it's an awesome way to start the olympics. >> reporter: the lake tahoe skier has three more events including downhill on wednesday. after posting the top downhill time in the super combined she is the favorite to begin wold. she is one of three usa athletes that have won medals from three different olympics. she joins bonnie blair and apollo anton ono. so a big day of competition, there's two new events debuting today, we're going to show you what those are coming up in about 20 minutes. janelle wang, nbc bay area news. >> pretty great company to be in i'd say. >> thanks, janelle. >> well, you can catch all of the olympic excitement starting at 3:00 here on nbc bay area with men and women's cross country skiing, women's luge and women's slopestyle skiing.

>> a look at today's top stories. many across the country remembering the work of a hollywood icon, shirley temple passed away overnight surrounded by loved ones at her home. she was 85 years old. >> indian athletes can now compete for their country. the committee lefted india's suspension from the game. the country was suspended in 2012 for electing officials accused of corruption to its olympic committee. three indian athletes have been participating in the olympics but they have been doing so as independents. >> and a bay area wine is on the

menu at the white house tonight as president obama hosts the french president francois hollande. will is a blend from family vineyards. >> this morning we're watching out for winter weather on the other side of the country. two weeks after snowstorms brought atlanta to a standstill another round of winter is going to slam the south. last month students remember were trapped at school, thousands of cars abandoned when a few inches crippled the area. georgians are determined to be ready for round two. nearly a third of the state has salt trucks and snow plows prepositioned. the national guard has 1400 four-wheel drive vehicles ready. heavy rain and snow expected today followed by sleet and freezing rain tomorrow. >> today an nbc bay area weather

advisory, fog in the forecast as we give you a live look at downtown san jose. right now most of that fog settling south of highway 92 along the peninsula and in the south bay. >> so we have team coverage for you right now in the foggy drive. mike inouye will have a look at the traffic hot spots, bob redell is out in the fog in san jose. we start with meteorologist christina loren. she joins us in the weather center. >> good morning to you. one of those mornings you don't want to sit around watching "today in the bay" although we love you, you want to get out there as soon as possible because we have really thick fog and it will likely create a slower than normal drive for you this morning. i do want to show you right now we have visibility down to a quarter mile in santa rosa, a half mile in fair field, down to the south bay we have the thickest conditions. a mile and a quarter in san jose. three miles in gilroy, two miles in livermore. that fog is going to stick with us for most of the day. that's going to limit your temperatures in places like san francisco. nonetheless, we're still going to break into the 60s later on

today so you want to make sure you grap those shades as there is sunshine on tap. first you got to get through that thick fog and make it to work. i want to take it live to bob redell. he has been out in san jose all morning near 280. any changes throughout? what are you looking at? >> reporter: good morning to you. here at northbound 280 in san jose, you can see the fog has lifted for the most part. that shows you how patchy and inconsistent the fog is throughout the bay area. speeds at the limit here, your brake lights in the northbound direction toward san francisco. if you're at home thinking well, then i've got it easy on my commute, not so fast because we've been through other parts of the bay area where it's been very thick, the fog, with visibility of less than a quarter mile. that's why there is a dense fog advisory in effect through 9:00 this morning. that would cover most of the morning commute. we want to show you a map of

where this advisory is in effect. basically about everywhere in the bay area is gray and under the advisory. as we widen out this map to the state of california you'll notice that the entire san joaquin valley is under the same advisory. so very low visibilities as you make your way through the central valley, down i-5. i can speak from my drive in this morning from livermore. highway 84 to sunol grade, possibility very low. you end up in thick pea soup situations, remember you want to slow down, do not tailgate and do not put your beams on high. you have the white wall flashing back in your eyes. reporting live in san jose, bob redell, christina. >> that is excellent advice, bob. yes, it's just because you see 10 miles or better san francisco to novato doesn't mean you're

not going to encounter patches where you can only see for hundreds of feet. it's not just the usual suspects getting that fog. it's thick down in the south bay where we dropped to a mile and a quarter in san jose. we head throughout day we'll see more clouds, temperature it is like i said are going to end up in the 50s and the 60s. you'll notice on the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen we actually have a warm-up headed our way as high pressure takes control. not for long. there is another storm system lurking in the pacific. i'll talk about that in a second. we'll expect showers by thursday where we're going to see a warm-up and mostly cloudy sky in the san jose area on thursday. so let's get into it. here is that futurecast. looks pretty good. we stop the clock as we head throughout thursday at with 6:00 a.m. showers starting to press in sonoma county. it's not just these showers, the organized showers that we're tracking. we're going to see steady

drizzle as we head throughout thursday morning at 6:00 a.m. then we get a better chance for rain as we head into this weekend. we still need it. i think the entire bay area will get wet at about with 6:00 a.m. on sunday. we'll keep you updated. right now more is mike inouye to update you. >> telling the tale of a lot of problems here, we had dense fog in many patches. here visibility improved. that's why i wanted to show owe area a half mile. as far as the deck and the drivers, that's plenty of visibility. you can see the off ramps. we do have a slower drive here starting to move a little better but let me show you. on the maps this is where the camera is. a crash reported up here, 101 and 880. here that 101 and 880 is affecting the flow of traffic. the bottom of the screen we have

our road weather index reporting dense fog over the mountains for 85, also 87 coming up past capital and we should see a burst. expect a slower drive. on the peninsula we have 280 and 101 around the wood side row area. heading to portola valley. watch around the coast. anything here we know about that. the dumbarton and the san mateo move. a fog advisory as well so keep that in mind. likely for the newark side that should be clear by now. this is not clear west 580 continues to build out of the altamont pass. lower visibility all morning here. definitely an issue. south of pleasanton in to control. and then back out of the fremont side on this south end. we'll look here toward the oakland area.

we'll get you into travel speeds. we have a nice flow of traffic. it is southbound 880 from 238 down to 92. you see the slowing typical. a live look at the northbound side past the coliseum. into downtown a mild slowdown because of the volume starting to build. 580 heading to the bay bridge because of an earlier crash that cleared but left a slow section. we had blashing lights. that's all clear but there is a westbound direction so speeds are coming down out of richmond into berkeley. >> thanks, mike. >> still ahead "today in the bay" traffic crackdown along the against against. >> really you should every day. the western span of the bay bridge officially changes its name today. details about the ceremony to honor its new namesake you see there, willie brown.

mateo with more about this crackdown. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott and laura. i did hear back from san mateo police and they are saying that this program really works, instead of a two-person team they use this allows them to use six or seven teams to focus on trouble spots, problem areas where maybe they have seen drivers running quite a few red lights. that sort of thing. pooling the resources of small police departments all along the peninsula to help out. it's called a san mateo county saturation traffic enforcement program or step. starts with foster city with the police department there helping out this morning in the city looking for violations of speed, running stop lights and stop signs. using your cell phone, seat belt violations. then later on today they are going to focus on the san mateo area this afternoon looking for pedestrian car violations, red light runners and drivers making unsafe turns. certainly good to remember any

time, but today they are out in full force looking for those violations. this is one of two of these enforcement efforts going on this month alone. reporting live in san mateo, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you much. one of the bay area's biggest land marks will get a new name. we're talking about did western span of the bay bridge which will now be named the willie l. brown jr. by bridge. the state legislature voted to rename the bridge after the former mayor and speaker of the house. some say brown was responsible for the delays and the high price tag associated with the construction of the span of the bridge. one critic even filed a lawsuit seeking to block the change. >> a great honor for him. he's got to be excited. talking about a lot this morning, a hollywood icon dies overnight, right here in the bay area. coming up we remember the lasting legacy of shirley temple

for congress in 1967. this morning hollywood stars are reacting to her death on twitter. whoopi goldberg tweeting the good ship lollipop has sailed today with shirley temple aboard. this is a look outside her home. the town that temple black called home in the later years of her life. peggy is in woodside and is going to join us with a live report. >> to the winter games, a look at the olympic flame burning in the olympic plaza in sochi. also a like look at the gateway to the slopes located about 30 miles away from the city. it's up there in the mountains, two new sports will crown their olympic medalists. >> two new events the women's ski jump and men's and women's slopestyle skiing. janelle wang joins us live. history will be made up there on the slopes.

>> reporter: yes, slopestyle is back. we saw the snow boarders and we won two golds, this time skiers and the competition has wrapped up for the women. unfortunately there are no northern california skiers in this competition but look out for devin logan from vermont. maggie had to pull out after fracturing her ankle last friday. also making a debut the ski jump for women. its first appearance for women, 90 years after men's ski jumping appeared. a 17-year-old from japan is the favorite. three americans from park city, utah are also competing in this event. >> i just want more people to see that the women can ski jump and it's one of the oldest sports in the olympics and it's 90 years for women to be here so check us out. i mean, i'm just thrilled to show ski jumping to the world

and that women can do it too. >> reporter: yes, they can. it's going to be fun to watch on prime time. unfortunately our three ladies are not expected to medal. they did not look as strong in the training sessions. we've got one of the most popular events going on, figure skating, the pairs short program begins tonight with marissa ka stelly and simon sha hir ro so a lot going on. we have half-pipe snow board and sean whilt. we'll give you a preview later in the show. janelle wang, nbc bay area news. >> and i know there's a big snowstorm in moscow but it's been fairly warm where you are. that's affected a lot of the snow. >> reporter: yes, it has. unfortunately it wasn't cold enough at the mountain cluster. it was like rain-snow mix. made it pretty slushy and since snowboarders were upsbet that because the half-pipe competition is today and they had to delay it a bit because of that. i'll have more on that and we're going to talk to shaun white and i'll have that for you too.

it's that high pressure that comes in and compresses all of the remnant moisture from the showers that rolled through the bay area. as a result we get reduced visibility. temperature this is morning are in the 40s and 50s. it's chilly. you need your coat most of the day. we're only going to ram up to the upper 50s so what happens is high pressure is building in. it does come in and compresses that moisture as it's trying to evaporate. as a result we've got a lot of moisture especially in the north bay where we picked up over a foot of rainfall and in the south bay over an inch over the past 72 hours. we still have the thick fog so that will be the case today. and likely for tomorrow as well. we don't have enough wind to mix up our atmosphere. futurecast tells the story. 8:30, that's when the fog will start to clear. a partial clearing by late morning, then this afternoon we're looking pretty good, the high clouds will come back for the second half of the day as a

storm system approaches the bay area. i'm going to time that out to your door step. right now it's a traffic tuesday. here is our mike inouye. >> we have weather and traffic compression both. here the fog you're talking about about. the moisture compressing, lower visibility in many temperatures. north of 680, i was able to make out the silhouette and then it disappeared. the map shows you this slow stretch. traffic compressing because of the crash north 101 and 880. look likes things are out of lanes. chp getting husband detail. as you leave the capital expressway off ramp continuing to sjc, the airport, north 87 from capital expressway the similar flow, they go hand in hand. 85 also flows through the orange zone where the map shows you even tougher to see than we saw for the 101 camera. we're looking at more fog around

the bay, a patch on the peninsula, no real slowing because that's pretty light for 101 and 280. look to the east bay t try valley. tough to see through this fast gulf course. 84 similar as you head toward the merge. the orange again for west 580, not quite so dramatic. we'll look at the dublin camera. you see the glowing lights. you see for about a quarter mile, slowing because of that volume. looking at the bay bridge toll plaza. we had metering lights on, about 5:50. the backup has been here. we can make out the east shore freeway. watch the hills through oakland. there is a car fire highway 24 at 580, that's a problem coming into the maze. we'll show you that on the maps. back to you. >> still ahead at 6:37. did rain bring down a roof in the south bay. a few details about the search

determined the warehouse was vacant at the time of collapse. the cause still under investigation. >> a bay area man accused of building bombs in pennsylvania could be let out of jail and back in california in days. he will stand trial for reportedly possessing a weapon of mass destruction. yesterday in court prosecutors showed pictures of bomb making material they found in the former carlmont high school student's pennsylvania apartment. he will remain in custody for at least another day until the judge decides bail amount. but by the end of the week he could be back in the bay area with his parents until that trial begins. >> time 6:41. coming up hollywood icon dies in her bay area home overnight after delighting audiences for decades even after her acting career ended. we'll remember the life and legacy of shirley temple black, just ahead. >> plus, controversy and complaints in sochi. we'll tell you why some olympians say the snowboarding

she often sang about what she would do when she grew up. she became a diplomat, a wonderful representative and also a politician running for the california congressional seat in 1967. take a look at her in her role as a diplomat. >> shrilaka is remembered with love, with affection. i'm thought of as a friend which i am. >> remembered with love and affection and thought of as a friend. her role as ambassador. i think that's how most of the country will think about shirley temple black. and the incredible role she played for our country, she lifted us out of the doldrums when the country needed it and how well she served from here in california in her later years. at 85 she is now gone and i think the entire country will miss her. from woodside, peggy bunker,

yourself. give yourself as much time as possible. we have thick fog reducing visibilities out there. let me show you where the fog is the thickest. basically, everywhere across the bay area you'll encounter these dense patches as you travel around. right now from santa rosa into concord your inland valleys getting hit the hardest with this dense fog. and visibilities are creeping up and dropping back off. so fog does not stay stationary. it actually moves around and we're expecting the whole scenario to get worse as we head through the next hour after which time once that sun comes out it clears the fog from the top down. let's find out how we're doing. bob redell is live this morning. he has been out along 280 all morning long. are you noticing as the sun is starting to make an appearance the visibilities dropping off out there. >> reporter: well, this area here in san jose, good morning christina, northbound 280 at winchester is an example of what you were alluding to where some areas you're seeing the fog lift. and this fog has lifted here.

it's still here but nowhere near as bad as it was about with an hour ago when we were out here. so throughout the bay area you have areas where you have very good visibility, you're going to have areas where you only have a quarter mile visibility. if you are in those areas like i was coming in from livermore, make sure you watch your distance between your car and the car in front of you, and do not use the bright headlights. if you haven't done it before you have the wall of white light shining back at you like a movie screen. makes it difficult to drive. it's not safe so. something to keep in mind. this dense fog advisory has been in effect since just before 4:00 this morning. goes into effect for the national weather service until 9:00 this morning well into the morning commute. we've got this map we put together of the dense fog advisory. just about everywhere in the bay area is shaded in gray and under this advisory. and as the map widens out for the state you notice that the entire san joaquin valley is under the same advisory so, if

you are headed out to the valley, to sacramento, los angeles, i-5, you could encounter low visibility. watch your speeds out there, that's the best advice. i know the chp would agree. when you're out here if you hit pea soup. bob redell, christina. >> thank you, bob. yeah, i like to call it chowder weather. we lose that visibility like that. as we head throughout day temperatures are going to be comfortable but we're going to deal with this thick fog in san francisco in particular for most of the day. that means you want to bring your coat with you. only climbing to about 58 degrees by 4:00 p.m. elsewhere, we're going to hit the mid-60s. not a bad day. especially in the tri-valley. we needed that rain that came through but typically this is what happens after it rains. high pressure comes in. compresses moisture and as a result we get the really thick fog. it's really thick in the sacramento valley. we call it the tulle fog.

south to bakersfield. south bay is looking good. we're going to see the sunshine first, that's why our temperatures are going to end up in the mid-60s, a nice looking day. plenty of cloudsçó to go around along the peninsula for the first part of the day. that's going to keep your temperature at 62 along the peninsula in san mateo, san francisco only the 50s expected. you'll see mostly cloudy conditions. looking good out in the north bay, yeah, still want to travel cautiously around the north bay with all of that rain accumulati accumulation. over a foot of rain it's not going to be any time soon. over the next three days you want to take it easy with lingering puddles and ponding. throughout the east bay temperatures are going to range from the upper 50s to low 60s. and in the tri-valley, wine country, up to 66 degrees with sunshine breaking through. so that foggy start will make way to a sunny and mild finish. a nice second half of the day. we head through tomorrow the low clouds return and then the high and mid level clouds move in throughout tomorrow afternoon.

on thursday we're tracking some showers, mostly to the mortgage of the golden gate bridge. let me show you what that looks like on your future cast. getting into thursday morning, a little bit of shower activity. moving into sonoma county. we all get a chance for rain as we head into this weekend on sunday at 6:00 a.m. i stop the clock. you can see moisture headed our way. and we need it. we'll take any drop in the bucket we can get. let's check your drive. here is mike inouye. >> we had many drops in the bucket. that's leading to the fog. so in patches around the bay the weather and traffic maps, the orange you see, that's where you'll see dense fog or you won't be able to see because of dense fog i should say. zooming in to an area that doesn't have so much fog. it's low clouds and a car fire. we see the slowing west 24 approaching 580. the details still sketchy. they are taking care of business. as i understand it's here near interchange. now they held up traffic a bit for 24. there was an earlier slowdown

that's providing a break for the maze. a slow drive out of the caldecott tunnel. easier through the maze approaching the berkeley curve where we have the backup. the metering lights were turned on earlier this morning. this is one of the orange sections out of the alta mont pass. still a half mile so okay as far as the drive on the deck level. can't see much past that so use caution. we have a slow drive southbound 680 into sunol where things are slow for 84 and 680 into the area, let me show you our live camera there in the valley. the reason why folks coming down and leaving the area or vice versa down and leaving the area. come through this fog. that's why you have to slow down. right here in the gully you are moving close to the limit or what you expect in the 50 area for the morning commute. south into the south bay you're fine, it's the northbound routes for the commute 101 and 880 a crash took time to clear. that caused the backup to be more severe past the airport. 87 slow because folks move over from 101.

sochi. lots of falls, lots of complaints from boarders during some of the practice. pretty slushy out there. >> reporter: yeah, it is. competition is under way, the sun has set here in sochi. and they are going into their second round right now. conditions not very good after a storm passed over sochi. our organizers had to delay competition a bit waiting for weather conditions to improve. this is file video of the half pim. boarders complain the snow is too soft. shaun white says the center of the half-pipe is bad with bumps and pot holes. he says it's not dangerous, just frustrating. >> it's not the best, i mean, i don't know, i don't want to bag on it but it's very disappointing. just the weather and the fact that it's so soft in the middle. it's hard to get across it wall to wall. but you know, we're dealing with it. >> reporter: white's biggest competition may be lake tahoe's
