bit. >> all part of the warmest temperatures in history for an event city. let's get to the top story that shirley temple has died in san francisco. as a child, she became one of the most famous beloved stars of all time and later went on to become a u.s. diplomat. ♪ on the good ship lollipop >> reporter: shirtly temple was a mere 6 years old when this became her signature song. shirley was born to perform on april 23rd, 1928 in santa monica, california. dancing almost as soon as she could walk, she made her onscreen debut at 4. >> i cannot go on. i'm so tired of it all. >> reporter: she was in more than 40 films, most before she was a teenager.

and let's go to sam, live in atlanta. i know they're already prepping for this. what have you heard? >> getting ready, al, they're getting ready. 18 states, 50-60 million people involved in what will be winter storm packs in this area. who knew when i came to work for the weather channel i'd be in the middle of almost every winter storm. look at this, i-75, i showed it to you, this city was shut down for about two, 2 1/2 days when it was covered in ice. this is what they're trying to avoid. there you are seeing pictures of trucks and cars everywhere. there is mixture of what they're spreading down on the road surface, rock and salt and sand here and the idea is to give you traction on the road. today is a wet day. tuesday is wet. tuesday night into wednesday morning, these temperatures will drop to freezing right around 2:00 a.m. that means we will get some

snow, we will get some ice, and that's going to last until thursday. just about everybody is already getting ready for it. we have a lot of schools shut down in the atlanta area and around it for tuesday and wednesday. the expectation here, as this storm pulls up into the mid-atlantic and thursday, there will be snow here and there. we will have a lot to talk about not only in atlanta but all the way up the east coast. >> that's right, we will be watching it as it unfoils on the weather channel. we other big story is the weather here. we have current temperatures for you up in the mountains and mountain valley areas. the current weather, they have had descendacent temperatures b for skiing. 39 in the resort base. 41 in the valley. look what happens tomorrow? we will see temperatures warming up. 51 in the valley. the mountains 36, up into the

comply until 2016. congressional republicans criticized the move saying it is an attempt to sidestep the law for political gain. some dramatic video has surfaced showing moments the u.s. took an al qaeda terror suspect into custody. this video is in october as he returned to his family's home in libya. you can see the white van pulling up behind his car. at least three men jump out with guns drawn and another car blocks the suspect's escape. after a brief struggle, he's pulled into the van before he pulls away. al libi is charged with the 1998 bombs in east africa that resulted in more than 200 deaths. a heads-up moment from the world of soccer from an amateur match in italy. after the goal, you can see the player make a beeline for his team's dugout and dodges all the high-fives and hugs from teammates. instead, he goes and slams his head through the plexiglas wall of the dugout. the player got a red card for

race, putting myself in this position after the down hill to be able to ski a solid slalom run was something also questionable for me was really cool. yeah. amazing. the pressure i thrive off the atmosphere and the love for my hometown and my family. it's just been awesome. >> i want to ask you about that slalom. for the first part, this is a two element race. for the down hill, you crushed it, you blew away the competition. then you are facing the slalom, not your event. i read you hadn't even completed a full slalom in practice in a year. what's going through your mind at that point? >> i mean, it was a really tough hill up there. the snow conditions, it was getting warmer and i knew that i just had to make it to the finish and just keep fighting the whole way down. that's basically what was going through my mind. i didn't know that so many skiers skied out but i knew for my run and to cross the finish

line, just to be proud of my race, i needed to finish that run. honestly i didn't think i would be that fast and that's why i was so excited when i crossed the finish line and saw there was a 3 next to my name and meant i was on the olympic podium again which means i get this medal. >> it's all the more wonderful because i know you dedicated this race to your grandfather who passed away a year ago. it sounds like he meant a lot to you in your skiing career. >> yeah. he's been an incredible inspiration for me and been a really big part of my family and one of the reasons why my parents got me so into skiing was because of my grandfather. after i won that first down hill it was just him in my ear saying how proud of me he was that i even finished that first round in first so i knew i had to go out and ski with my heart and do my best for him so thanks, grandpa. >> ah. did you do it, really.

>> yeah. got a training run today and it was pretty good. conditions were really good in spite of being really warm. and now i'm looking forward to getting more and more dialed in over the next couple of days and racing on friday. >> we've heard a lot of your fellow skiers being a bit concerned about the conditions. the fact it's warm and getting warmer. is that something that will be on your mind? >> i can't control the conditions. so it's going to be what it is. i'd rather see harder, icier conditions, which is what our racers like. and right now, it's like that. but if it stays warm, who knows what it's going to be like. >> i heard you actually have some experience in this venue because you've done some training with the russian team. that's got to be an advantage. >> yeah. we trained here for a week after world championships, and i was mostly training, i'm one of the only guys in the world that's

actually seen full length. that gives me a little bit of an advantage, more of the sense i won't have the anxiety of having to run this the first time in the olympics. but it was nice to be able to train here with the russians the last couple of years. >> meantime, you have just been on a tare, your 2012/2013 season is one for the record books. is something like that a confidence boost as you go into the olympics or kind of add to the pressure because you know everybody's looking at you? >> the olympics there's always pressure. there's no really way around that. having the season i had last year and having the season i'm having this year, you know, adds pressure a little bit in a sense. but that's kind of what you want it to be. you want to be having a season where you have the pressure on you. that means you're skiing well and doing the right thing. i'm embracing that and looking forward to the opportunity to put down good races here. >> and speaking of pressure, i have seen these games referred to as the, quote, can't miss

sochi showdown between you and bode miller. do you see, is there a healthy rivalry there? and is it motivating? >> bode was one of my heroes growing up. it was fun to be on the ski team my first couple of years on the ski team. and now going back and forth with him. he has me for sure in the speed events and i have him in the second events. and combined is where our two skillsets converge. it's always a fight in between those events. we're always rooting for each other. we're pretty good friends, super competitive in training and doing other sports. but we're always rooting for each other and hoping each other do really well. and so, it's going to be fun here. hopefully we both get some medals. >> well, we'll be rooting for both of you, as well. ted ligety, thanks so much and best of luck. >> thanks. coming up on "trending," nervous? who's nervous? we'll meet the u.s. athlete with the best moves in sochi.

forward, and one side is slightly lower than the other to encourage you to push your foot outward. they tested this skate and found it made their skaters 13% faster. that's a huge advantage. >> that's great. >> and is this technology available for people? >> that is an expensive skate, though, about $700. >> that's a lot of pucks. >> talk to me about the goggles. >> so ted ligety started this brand to address what he thought were vision problems out skiing. so he's done a few things here to make vision more clear. and so you can get a bigger range. he's made the goggles bigger. that's your peripheral. he's addressed what is pressure build-up between the layers of lenses which can create distortion. he's put an air vent in each lens. and of course he's made it so you can pop it out easy so you can have a different tint or color as you need it. >> and those are also available to the average skier? >> yep. you can get those, as well.

>> to start. >> now it's gone gray. >> gets colder for us as the sun starts to go down behind the stadiums. but they're having problems up in the mountains, as well. yeah? >> i'm not sure. i don't know. >> today's -- >> a couple of numbers. >> what's the deal? >> i guess we all have to talk into it. >> the temperature's near 60 degrees again today. >> it has dropped down. however, up in the mountains, it is way too warm so the halfpipe practice was postponed. in fact, a lot of qualifying canceled for today. and they're going to push things back to tonight when now temperatures, sun goes down, temperatures start to drop. but this is going to be a problem going right on into thursday. >> no question about it. shaun white competing today, going for his third gold in the halfpipe. did very well. but he did say earlier in the week, this is a very difficult halfpipe. the conditions are not good. he tried to put a smile on it. but he was not the only one. many of these competitors in the

halfpipe saying this is a really tough course. a little messy. the snow's not what you want it to be. it's more difficult to pull off some of the tricks. >> on the slopestyle, the skiers today, their inaugural event here making that debut here. and there were a couple of falls, as well. one of the canadian skiers had to be taken off the mountain in, you know, was injured a little. >> you don't want to see. yes, it does kind of make it equal for everybody, everybody has problems. but when you have athletes of this caliber getting injured. i think people have to sit up and take notice. >> when you're talking about some of the moves that guys like shaun white are going to do, they need every inch of height they can get. >> the twist or whatever he's doing. >> i had a twist the other day. >> how was that? >> it was tasty. >> oreo? >> yeah, and they put the butterscotch. >> just delightful. hey, good news, the u.s. did earn another medal today. devin logan earning a silver medal in freestyle skiing.

pressure off. the first time i was so overwhelmed and the arena seemed so big and now it seemed a little smaller, been there, done that. i'm able to focus a lot more now and have a lot more fun. it's kind of crazy. i'm having a good time here this time around. >> you're the senior member of the team. so are you giving a lot of advice to the younger up and comers? >> no, i'm just kicking his butt. >> good. >> remind him who's boss, right? >> right. >> emery, i was over there watching the 5,000 meter a couple days ago, when you see it in person, it's amazing how exhausting it looks. talk about the training, getting yourself ready for an event. people don't realize how tough it is. >> yeah. it's pretty crazy. hours over the summer, just 6 hours a day, up to six hours a day. in my basement on my slide board and swimming, all the stuff that goes into it. people don't realize, you know, it's just skating. all you've got to do is get out there and skate.

it's a lot more. all sorts of cross training, and it's really tough. >> you're from illinois. same area as shani davis. what's that like? has he been an inspiration to you? >> yeah. it's always cool to have chicago on the team. but he's definitely been a role model. i'm sure not just to me but to everyone. he's a really nice guy and really -- always giving me compliments and motivating. >> giving you advice? >> at times. >> not too much, though? >> yeah. not too much. he tells me to stay away from the 1,500. >> that's good advice. >> your race is next week, right? >> yes, it's next sunday. >> so what do you do between now -- that's a long time for you to kind of gear up and wait. >> yeah. i know. well, i'm actually attending a couple of events in between times. but i also got to, you know, get over to the rink and keep the training in. just to stay sharp and everything. >> you have a cool back story.

taking a look at taking a look at the headlines, attention among concussion studies among football players. but canadian researchers found the practice of heading the ball can cause repeat concussions or sub concussive head blows, which don't cause symptoms. one study revealed that 62% of varsity soccer players had concussion symptoms during their careers, but only 19% actually realized it. the fda is recalling bags of uncle ben's flavored rice after school kids got sick. uncle ben's infused rice is sold in 5 and 25-pound bags, distributed to schools and other institutions and not to grocery
